I recently had an audition for my school's symphonic band and one of my main difficulties was keeping my hands and wrists light and free. This video was very helpful and I believe it will improve my playing!
I have listened to probably 25 videos on TH-cam for flute instruction and yours is by far the best! Thank you so much for all of your tips. You really are gifted in teaching!
This video helped me so much! I've been playing for about two years with my band and I wasn't very happy with my tone but I'm satisfied with it now! Thank youuuuuuuu
I was wearing headphones and I had my volume all the way up at the beginning. Oops lol. You are great at playing the flute. I found one of your videos and fell in love with your playing. Keep up the good work
Great tips, Jolene- thank you! By the way, your playing is a model of efficiency, keeping your fingers very close to the keys. Also, I noticed that you play with an offset embouchure, and your tone is beautiful, full, and rich. Some people contend that you have to play with the embouchure centered on the tone hole, but you and Jean-Pierre Rampal are clear examples that offset embouchure works great. Cutting the airstream accurately on the far wall of the tone hole is the important thing- not where the aperture in your lips is..
This is awesome. You don't just talk, you show with examples. Brilliant. With the C to D exercise, I find there are some other awkward two note combinations to move from. I wonder if this is dealt with anywhere.
That's a great question, I like to take note of any awkward finger-interchanges in my scales and pause to work them out as I discover them! There are some exercises out there designed to work on these awkward finger exchanges - I believe Trevor Wye's technique practice book has a section called "Machiavellian" exercises that are made up of awkward notes!
So great. I love hearing you play even if it's just scales and exercises. Your tone is beautiful and your technique is wonderful. Could you maybe do a lesson about how to end notes? There's lots of videos out on TH-cam about how to tongue but not much about how to release notes. I either end up chopping them off or I have this wave of air. And neither one is right. Thank you Heidi in Atlanta
Such a helpful video! I came across your channel looking for some flute improvement tips. You have so many great tips and an amazing tone. Thank you for sharing!
Very helpful video. Thank you. My fingers are short & slight bent pinky right hand & struggle with reaching key for low C without slipping off other right hand keys. Do you have suggestions to play more easily the measure in Rhapsody in Blue where you have to play high E F#E then G#AG#F#F (I struggle with playing the later phrase quickly). Score by Ferde Geode. On first page section 6. The fingering is hard to deal with quickly. Tried Thumbport but it slips off frequently.
E-flat can be especially airy or closed-sounding sometimes, but it sounds like there may be a leak, or, if you have open-holed keys without plugs, the fingers may not be fully covering the keys, which can result in a weird air sound!
I have a problem. I always feel like practicing at the worst times. Like in the middle of the night of when we have guests over. I have that soooooo much:(((( I still practice in the day, but I wish I could practice any and all the time
Star Boots how were you taught originally? When I have this issue I go back to the original “puh” sound (that I was taught) while directing my air in the correct direction. Singing into the flute may also help with this
same, my teacher told me to put my index finger about 5 inches away from my face and to blow air and direct it all to my fingertip. this will help when playing to focus all your air in one place so you get a more solid sound.
Joe Magnets everyone has a “sweet spot” in their mouth shape, since all mouths are different, it basically the spot in which you’re most comfortable in and also should be the one in which you can play better
I'm brand new at this! I wish I had started long ago! 😅 you sound Fantastic!

Great video Jolene. I love hearing the different ways that people practice technical exercises.
Thank you, Claire!! :)
I am sooooo impressed with your playing. Good suggestions for practice, thanks.
Thanks, I'm having a concert next week. It was helpful for my practice.

You begin this video with a wonderful set of arpeggios. At 3:14 in the video you mention the composer. I couldn't make it out. What is it?
Nice video. What brand of flute are you playing?
what was the exercise she was playing right at the beginning of the video and where can I find it?
Thank you
Beautiful!!! I'm a singer and just Got a flute, how can I make a vibrato on a flute like I do with my voice

Hi Jolene, I have the difficulty to memorise exercises and pieces. Any ideas on this topic?
Great video Jolene, many useful tips, thanks a lot for the quality of your vids!
When you think you play good and then hear the intro.
In your intro, the last note that you played had specific tone to it, almost like a vibrato. How do you produce that sound when you play?
Hi! Check out my vibrato video for a more in-depth explanation of vibrato/sound, that will explain a bit better than I can put into words here!
6:55
If you can play it slowly. . .
you can play it quickly
LING LING 40 HOURS
What is the thing you put on between flute headjoint and body?
Seya Lee, it’s called lefreque!

my birthday!!!!
What model flute? Thanx in advance
for some reason it’s very hard to get a good e flat or f tone when I hold it, it just comes out as wind while my other notes seem to be fine
E-flat can be especially airy or closed-sounding sometimes, but it sounds like there may be a leak, or, if you have open-holed keys without plugs, the fingers may not be fully covering the keys, which can result in a weird air sound!
OH WOW!!! New Idol FOUND
il y a bien longtemps que je n'ai pas entendu un si joli son de flûte.
I have a problem. I always feel like practicing at the worst times. Like in the middle of the night of when we have guests over. I have that soooooo much:(((( I still practice in the day, but I wish I could practice any and all the time

I'd like you to comment on why you play on the left side of your mouth?
Joe Magnets everyone has a “sweet spot” in their mouth shape, since all mouths are different, it basically the spot in which you’re most comfortable in and also should be the one in which you can play better
I double on flute from saxophone I think I will quit the flute now because I will never be this good .
