This video was brilliant, I was absolutely on the edge of my seat with excitement. I have a 2023 Range Rover P510e Hybrid you are more than welcome to borrow if you'd like to do the test again in that???
Wonderful - well done. I have Terminal Cancer and what you have done today has fully restored my faith in society. I bought this RR TDIV8 6 weeks ago. I had always wanted one and this is part of my bucket list. So far to date, it has exceeded expectations. (apart from two blown small hoses). So thanks again, great video thank you
This is the first of your videos that I have watched. It is not cheating to draft a HGV. It is frowned upon as it does require a closer following distance. However, the premise of hypermiling requires that you employ advanced driving techniques. Forward planning, bend assessment, using the environment to your advantage. It is arguably the case that someone drafting a HGV is potentially paying more attention to the road, their driving, their position and theirs and others safety. I have no issue with people paying attention whilst driving. As an advanced motorcyclist and driver and not knowing if you are too, you have proved that you have it improved your skill level. And done it in the name of a belting charity. I am sure Robin would be chuffed. Well done.
Amazing video and amazing car! 41mpg out of a near 3 ton beast is astounding. The 4.4 TDV8 is a beauty. I was tempted to sell mine a few months back - so glad I didn’t. Wonderful cars. Nothing else comes close.
960.6 miles/ 42 mpg on a single tank of fuel on a V8 diesel RR - just incredible !!! It was a riveting vid on your journey north . Hopefully you dont have to look out for a safe place to land when you are flying a plane - now that would make great folow up youtube vid 🤣
Just loved your lessons for life at the end of the video - As I said in an earlier posting, I am dying from Terminal caner. I accepted a bike challenge ride from London to Bruges in Belgium. I was told to old and many other things - this is what pushed me on to get their. I was the oldest on the ride but not the last to finish by a long way. We raised money for the same cause. Thanks again for a great video
A fantastic result. It just shows that even with the improvements in battery technology, the electric car range still has a long way to go to beat your diesel. 🙂
Brilliant video Ed. I have retired to the Tramontana mountains of Mallorca - my Range Rover has to do hundreds of short daily journeys every year with 4 dogs, logs and groceries. A long journey would be 10 kilometres (6 miles)with 12-15 stop starts a day using the air suspension 12-30 times a day. I still achieve approximately 50% of your truly amazing consumption. This all tells me that the car is brilliant. Good Luck.
Holy moly! I flipping knew it!! Even if you don’t make the full 1000 in the vid, anywhere even close is a massive win! For my next prediction, this will be your most watched video ever and good luck to you! 👍
Absolutely Awesome, that was BRILLIANT mate. My name's Abdul Hameed from Cape Town South Africa and i just took delivery of my 2023 Range Rover D350 on Friday past, (9 June 2023) and im gonna try a 1 tank challege. I go on a 3 week break from work end of June. Perfectly enough time for me to do just that.
Hi Ed Really Great video and hope you raise the Total that you are aiming for I have put my bit towards this great charity, thanks again for sharing this trip with everyone! xx
Great to see the challenge completed and smashed! At this stage I worked out your views have paid you circa. £1.60 so I’ve happily donated to help the cause. I have a 4.4 L405 and am wondering how that would compare. Best wishes, Matt
Thank you Matt. I had to explain how meagre the revenue actually is. Thank you for understanding and donating directly. If you have the 4.4 TDV8 L405 they’re essentially the same engines with the addition of start stop. They would perform the same. Ed
Great work, enjoyed the watch. I reckon without letting it go cold out would have done 1000 miles, impressive achievement and great patience to drive it so efficiently for so long
Bravo Sir ! I came to this video late. Remember watching you guys buying this car. It just coinside with me buying the same vehicle. Drifted away from the channel (no criticism) so had not realised that Robin had passed away. He looked so chuffed when you found the car. Great tribute video for him They truly are awesome vehicles and I still enjoy mine.
Well done Ed. Gripping video, thoroughly enjoyable. What impressive vehicles these are? I have 2012 4.4TDV8 Westminster, and have just come back from a week in Dunoon. We live in the NW of England so no where near the distance you managed but arrived at Dunoon with less than half a tank used. 236 miles 5 adults plus luggage and not hanging about either. When I filled up to come home the predicted range shot to 562 versus normal range of 440'ish. Donation made to a very worthy cause.
Hi Ed, Great challenge and for a great cause which i have donated to. Really enjoyed the video, by far the best one tank challenge on youtube. Take Care Adam
Great video, what a legend of a car. I certainly don’t remember mine doing anything like those miles, although I wish I still had it. Video deserves more views.
Excellent m8 what a challenge you done nothing wrong a brainy irish man I have a range rover 3.0 diesel it a non runner just cut out one day never ran again am gutted lying in the lock up keep up the good work
Range Rover L322 , 2004 , td6 , bmw engine . Full tank 680 miles , motorway trough Europe . Unbelievable for myself. On RAC fuel calculator , based on 22mpg , and 1640 miles trip I was if I remember well around 600£ mark . I ve lost it when actually with a tank empty to empty, when reserve yellow lamp comes on , and it proves that actually with 120£ diesel , 82 litres , we ve driven 680 miles . Still can’t believe it . Amazing cars .
Been watching all your l322 videos as I have been thinking off getting one, Been waiting for this video to happen. I thought you would make it but to get to Inverness is impressive. This has made me want a l322 4.4 tdv8 even more now. Keep the videos coming really enjoy watching them.
Fantastic video, I have a 2018 Range Rover Sport but I’ll stick to local trips, my maths teacher told me I’d never come to anything, well I’m into my 20th year as a police officer ! Great video keep up the great work
Well done Ed , I often run my L322 3.6 to abot 1200km on an indicated 3/4 tank and I fill to the top like you did , so , I guess if I had to push it , in South Africa , I could come close , these tdv8s are especially good on feul on the open road , even when you have to floor it past slow coal trucks . Hoofing it is suburban environs it is not so frugal . They are great cars that unfortunatley , the manufacurer ( who go for electronic high tech these days ) orders their electronics from chinese lucky packets . If you can live with the built in dodgy electronics , they are great .
Absolutely well done but cancer research is a big money making scheme. I'm a prostate cancer survivor too. Cancer is curable already but "they" don't want you to know. Well done though, I know you mean well ❤.
Well done Ed , enjoyed the Video and have donated. I have family on Orkney so have done much of that trip a few times from home in Wiltshire , by comparison to yours my trips are easy - fill tank before leaving , eat at Tebay , overnight near Glasgow , top up tank next morning and do the rest of trip up to the ferry, main challenge is to stay within legal speed limit so it must have needed loads of discipline to average around 50mph when the roads were clear....
Congratulations on an excellent video and objective obtained. There are many such videos on TH-cam extolling the virtues and range of the diesel engine RR. What I'd like to see is a long-range trip with a 5-litre petrol-engined supercharged RR.
1. The diesel helps in the high mileage runs. 2. If we have to think so many details i.e., the wind, tire pressure, speed, traffic, weight of the car, etc. it sincerely takes the fun out of driving. Clarkson did 800 miles in a heavy Audi V8 with crazy details. What was the miles per gallon figure. ?? Fantastic SUV.
Well done .... I have done 170 k miles in 2 of these and said 675 miles so nearly 50 % off. I got 49 mpg hypermile without draughting over 20 miles at 50 mph in 8th gear showing on screen just didn't believe it. I always had to fill up weekly after 450 miles but was not completely empty I gusset and topped up about 90 gallons. Screen always said 28 mpg. Always doubted this as seemed to put more gallons in for less miles than screen suggested. I though you wouldn't make it and shows the aero drag at higher speeds but I always felt around town was heaviest consumption on cold engine. Well done and glad you did it and wanted to see video as changed my mind after watching Joel.
This is impressive. However it also proves that driving a long range Model S or 3 Tesla is not a problem. Fully charged you can drive about 500km before you need to recharge. In about 20 to 30 min you can continue driving with about 80% charged. And then you have your next stop in 3 hours.
Good vid. I miss my 2011 l322 tdv8, it was one of my best and reliable cars I’ve owned believe it or not. I also found for a v8 to be one of the most efficient large engines even out preformed the tdv6. Im probably this year getting a 2017 sdv8 l405 and probably going to run that for the long term.
Absolutely amazing video. Very very impressive. It has focused my mind on maybe driving more economically on motorway journeys and not have the AC on sometimes to see what difference that makes. One question; did running at 40 psi impact the (excellent) ride? Roll on the next video! I will donate now
Thanks Andrew. It was a little fore firm than usual, However I won't run them permanently like that as they would wear more in the centre than the edges and reduce their lifespan. Ed
My td6 RR averages 32mpg on a run keeping her at good speed about 55-65mpg, lane 1 cruising. There not bad on fuel really on a run but tdv8 are better, mine normally shows around 580-600 full tank range and if I work out fill to fill the computer is right to within a mile or two. Round town I get about 22mpg in summer and 18-19 in winter.
There is something in the North to South v South to North,i lived in London for years but drove back to Durham regularly and what i noticed was if i went back home i'd still have enough fuel to drive around for a couple of day's. I never got that driving home to London.
@@Back_Road_Hero I don't think that's a reason though and i'll tell you why.. Each time i went north i'd wind the window down at around south yorkshire just to get used to the cold again so realistically that would mean less miles to a gallon.Ten years in London and atleast six trips a year back home in various weather yet still getting near enough the same results. What i will say though is i generally set off late night/early morning to miss the traffic and only used the A1.Only thing i can come up with is fuel type,BP in london, tesco in Durham.
Great video 👍 Amazing mileage for a Range Rover. I bought my first RR 25 years ago and have never driven anything else since, I’m totally hooked. One thing that I keep thinking 🤔 about from your video is did you ever tell your teacher that you had become an airline pilot ? 🤔🤔
You obviously watched to the vey end and I truly thank you for that. I unfortunately never got to tell him. But it’s a good lesson to always strive for your goals irrespective of others. Ed
Drafting behind trucks is not cheating its taking advantage of the situation like flying an airplane with the tail wind behind you gives better range or mpg
Well done Ed I was hopeful of you doing it as my own range rover achieved 41mpg, but just wondering what it would do if you had a premium fuel in it as you said you had filled it ar Tesco's.Lets hope JLR will give you a newer model to try again and sponsor you 😅
Great video. My entry level to the L322, after twelve years of 300TDI Discos, was probably lower than yours, as such I have the 3.6 with the six speed box. Thanks for the advice about knocking the gear lever into sport, in order to hold the higher gear at the lower speed. I am frequently the only occupant and as such have been from time to time frustrated by the gear change, by a relatively gentle incline. I have been immensely impressed by consumption (as indeed I always was by the 300 TDIs), perhaps one day I'll make time to try some sort of brim to brim challenge of my own. Cheers.
Totally brilliant video!!!! Amazing fuel consumption!!!! But unfortunately you are lucky that the Range Rover didn’t break down on the journey!!! ‘Cause I’ve owned a dozen Range Rovers and there readability is rubbish!!! But I’m hooked on the Range Rover drug!!! Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿
Amazing I drive lots in Europe in my trusty 2008 Discovery 3 (205k currently on the clock). I often see lots of cars driving the way you are doing slip streaming, amazing mpg and at 55 it's in theory more relaxed once you get confident with the driving style, will give it a go on my Italian trip this summer. By the way what's the make and model of your car play android device.
Thanks Paul. To be honest I wasn’t going silly with the distance behind as the footage shows but it made a real difference. For CarPlay I imported my own. Still have a couple left. I can customise the start up logo if you wish. Ed www.backroadhero.com/product/reverse-camera-brh2-universal-portable-wireless-carplay-android-auto/
Brilliant video! Can I just say, as a biker, over filling the tank like that makes me whince a bit. As it just comes out of your overflow pipe on the first roundabout you hit and leaves the diesel ‘rainbow’ on the floor, which is lethal for us bikers.
@@Back_Road_Hero Don't blame you! I once hopped straight off a 3-day submarine trip to Scotland straight into a hire car and drove back to Plymouth, and that was bad enough. Doing almost 1000miles solo is another level of madness...
Great achievement, congrats on that. Did you stick to 55mph on the motorway just to tailgate the trucks or is that supposed to be the best speed for optimal fuel economy? The video was an eye opener for me. I live in central Germany and take my 4.4 TDV8 to the French Alps twice a year, a route of around 470 miles. By the time I get there I've less than a quarter of a tank left but the fuel warning light is usually not yet on. Admittedly for the first three hours in Germany I'm often doing 100mph and Switzerland and France have 75mph and 80mph limits respectively. I guess it shows what a difference speed makes. I would never have believed that I could potentially eek out so many more miles from this type of car. Maybe I should try sticking to 55mph for the whole journey 😄 Good luck on whatever your next challenge will be.
I didn’t stick to 55mph but chose to stay behind traffic that passed me at 55 when I was driving at 52-53mph. Never above 70, and that was only downhill. This type of driving is exhausting and soooo boring. And remember that I had the tyres pumped up hard. They’re now back to normal. I’d never usually drive so slowly and would rather spend the cash on extra fuel, but it was a good exercise in what is actually possible.
Congrats to you Ed, I throughly enjoyed the video and am absolutely amazed at the outcome. I don't think you cheated with the draughting, it's real world 😊 What a great effort from you and for a good cause, here's to you and Robin 🍻
Ed well done, excellent video. The range of the L322 exceeded my original 900 miles. Keep up the good work. Would you consider trying the video again this time with maybe premium fuel V Power? That would then prove that quality isn't as good?
@@Back_Road_Hero Hi Ed, interesting now. I reckon you could go back to Shell or BP and see if they could prove there fuel as claimed can gain more mpg? Be very interesting
That was a good challenge; however the math calculations are a little off: 105.77 liters is 27.941 gallons; almost 28 gallons compared to your 23 gallon estimate. At that rate the MPG is around 34-36 MPG (@ 961 miles & 28 gallons) still remarkable for a Range Rover.
I have just started watching this video as i am considering buying an L405 4.4d or a Diesel Bentayga. I am also an economical driving enthusiast. I have an ISuzu D-max 1.9d 2018 at the moment, it has 7000 miles on the trip and is showing an average since i bought it of 39.9 mpg. A journey i did yesterday of 100 miles (50 each way) to Nottingham and back home returned 48.0 mpg. The manufacturer claims 33 combined!! The trucks display is quite good too, a recent camping trip of 1000+ miles over 10 days returned 44.2 on the display and 44 at the pump. All i have done is fit tyres with an A fuel rating and removed the engine driven fan! Right i will go and watch the rest of your video.
Most of the HGV drivers seemed to have theirs set (seems reasonable) so I found it was easier to match speed using mine. I’d a long way to go and whilst not radar cruise, it did help take the strain. I was able to adjust in 1 mph increments so it minimised throttle input. That’s was my logic anyway. Ed
Am still watching this, and trying to avoid the comments! How are you able to sleep in the back? When I fold my rear seats forward, there is a rise/ledge between the boot floor and the underneath of the seats...!!
I put some memory foam in the back (it’s still there). In the dip I doubled it up to act like a pillow. It’s surprisingly comfortable. Ed Glad you’re enjoying it. Sorry it’s a bit long. 😂
Suspension felt a little firmer but not much. I’d be more concerned about uneven wear across the tread if I were to run them for longer than the challenge. I’m sure that it helped though. Ed
Both are at sea level. The cairngorms in Scotland are the highest elevation and I wanted to have the car at the lightest there. Also the prevailing winds are from the south west so it would have probably been a headwind doing it that way. Ed
This isn’t helping me to not buy a Range Rover… The only thing now is just the reliability then I’m sold. The challenge reminds me of when I had my 05 E270 and achieved 62mpg from Rugby to Whitehaven
Sorry! 😁 I’d strongly advise holding back a couple of thousand to make repairs. But once they’re sorted then it’s just like any other car. Remember there’s little depreciation any more. Ed
Good video enjoyed it ? When we are young we go to school and we look up to teachers and they have a direct influence on our lives but when we look at teachers they dont have much life experience in general they go to school get the o levels then the a Levels and then collage and then go back to school to teach and we listen to them which I think is a wrong move the person we should listen to is the person who is the airline pilot the person who has achieved what you wanted to achieve A person who says No to you but could never say yes to your plans is not the person whos advice you should take education has its place but life experience and achievement are the role models we should follow hope this makes sence to you I lfet school with no qualifications and i run a large investment business worth millions of pounds that is my yard stick achievement i am dyslexic and i was put down at school so much but it made me stronger to achieve and prove teachers wrong
Perhaps that’s why I feel that I have achieved so much in my life. I set out to prove him wrong, but what I actually discovered was that I had the passion to succeed. I’ve had a wonderful career and life but have put in the effort to achieve it. I suspect you’ve done the same. Regards. Ed

This is impressive. However it also proves that driving a long range Model S or 3 Tesla is not a problem. Fully charged you can drive about 500km before you need to recharge. In about 20 to 30 min you can continue driving with about 80% charged. And then you have your next stop in 3 hours.
nice challenge, great goal ... incredible.41 mpg at avg 55 mph : it looks efficient 😁
Thanks. It was a very long challenge but worth it in the end. Ed
Great video Ed really enjoyed watching this 👊🏻
Thanks. Ed
Great choice. I’ll probably look at the L405 as well when the time comes. For now I’m still enjoying the L322. Ed
Ed
Brilliant Ed. Well done.
Thanks Barry. Ed
That's amazing I wonder what my 3.0 Diesel will get because its pretty shite round town.
Congreatulations Well done !
Thank you. Ed
Fantastic work mate
Thanks Dave. Much appreciated. Ed
Really enjoyed this and the inspirational message keep up the great work
Thanks James. It’s very much appreciated. Ed
There is something in the North to South v South to North,i lived in London for years but drove back to Durham regularly and what i noticed was if i went back home i'd still have enough fuel to drive around for a couple of day's.
I never got that driving home to London.
Maybe the wind perhaps? Ed
Well done totally awesome..
Thank you Gordon. Much appreciated. Ed
Great stuff, might try it west Australia!
Make sure you carry some extra fuel though! 😉👍
Fair play for the fantastic Journey And the amazing video your a great inspiration to a lot of people thank you🎉
Thanks so much. It was real fun as well as being for a good cause. Ed
Well Done.. 💯👍👍👍👍
Thank you. Much appreciated. Ed
Great video most enjoyable.
Thank you for watching. Ed
Just discovered your channel, fantastic video, subbed for more👍
Welcome aboard! Ed
Ed
Very well done sir, good inspiration for others too 👍
Thanks Brian. Ed
Hope so because I want one insted of my d3 tdv6.
Great video Ian. I have a 2010 RR Vogue 5 litre supercharged. I wonder how far I would get in that.
Drafting behind trucks is not cheating its taking advantage of the situation like flying an airplane with the tail wind behind you gives better range or mpg
That’s what I thought as well. I wasn’t that close but I’m sure that it helped even a little. Thanks for watching it. Ed
Fantastic
Im more impressed it never broke down.
It’s well maintained at a good specialist. Ed
Great vid I knew she would do it, great car ❤ (L322)
Thanks Claire. Ed
Well done Ed! Impressive. I had faith in you 😊😅
Thanks Rob. Ed
Well done Ed I was hopeful of you doing it as my own range rover achieved 41mpg, but just wondering what it would do if you had a premium fuel in it as you said you had filled it ar Tesco's.Lets hope JLR will give you a newer model to try again and sponsor you 😅
Thanks Matt. Let’s hope so. Ed
Absolutely brilliant video, great content.
Much appreciated! Ed
I think you have started a new challenge ,960.6 miles on one tank of fuel in an old L322.Can it be beaten .Genius.
I’d like to try it in something more modern. Thanks for watching. Ed
Cheers.
My first L322 was actually a 2004 TD6. Loved it. Ed
Thanks Ian. Ed
What a fantastic adventure.
Fun and completely knackering in the process. A great challenge for a great cause.
Ed

Brilliant video!
Can I just say, as a biker, over filling the tank like that makes me whince a bit. As it just comes out of your overflow pipe on the first roundabout you hit and leaves the diesel ‘rainbow’ on the floor, which is lethal for us bikers.
Strong effort, Ed! Time to tape up the panel gaps and shoot for 1000... 😉
This took me a few days to recover from. The thought of doing it all again… Ed
Is that Luke?
@@Back_Road_Hero Don't blame you! I once hopped straight off a 3-day submarine trip to Scotland straight into a hire car and drove back to Plymouth, and that was bad enough. Doing almost 1000miles solo is another level of madness...
@@Back_Road_Hero It is indeed!
@@LukeRainbird Hi mate. Hope you’re all well? You all still doing thunders this season?
Should have gone the other way, all down hill from Scotland 😂
@@Back_Road_HeroI love driving my 4.2 supercharged at 57mph. But only get 23mpg 😂
Can't wait to see this! 😁😁
I never expected it to be this good! Ed
Congrats to you Ed, I throughly enjoyed the video and am absolutely amazed at the outcome. I don't think you cheated with the draughting, it's real world 😊 What a great effort from you and for a good cause, here's to you and Robin 🍻
Lands End is actually most western part of UK. Lizard point is the most southerly point in UK
Point taken.
Ardnamurchan Point is further west than Lands End.
Ed well done, excellent video. The range of the L322 exceeded my original 900 miles. Keep up the good work.
Would you consider trying the video again this time with maybe premium fuel V Power? That would then prove that quality isn't as good?
Hi Chris. Only if they paid for it. My enquiries were ignored but that isn’t unusual. I couldn’t justify the extra cost. Ed
Are you in the USA perhaps? UK imperial gallons are different to US gallons. Ed
US gallons are 3.9 liters whereas UK gallons are 4.5 litres.
Glad you’re enjoying it. I sure had fun albeit an exhausting adventure. Ed
7p's Ed :D Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents Pi55 Poor Performance :)
I’m always a little short! 😂😂😂 Ed 🛩️
@@Back_Road_Hero Only 39.5 miles short in this case tho right ?? :D
Impressing.
Brilliant, great vid Ed. Quick q - did you use cruise control much or at all - In a few speedo shots the cruise set speed is shown?
Most of the HGV drivers seemed to have theirs set (seems reasonable) so I found it was easier to match speed using mine. I’d a long way to go and whilst not radar cruise, it did help take the strain. I was able to adjust in 1 mph increments so it minimised throttle input. That’s was my logic anyway. Ed
Outstanding result. But the dual mass clutch doesn't like that.
I’d like to know why please? Ed
Properly enjoyed thus , c'mon land rover jaguar lend ED a new range Rover pretty please.
Glad you enjoyed this. I’ll wait until the views hit 25k and then send them an email. 😁👍 Ed
Look very dated now the l322 loved mind but love my l405 Worlds apart
Impressive. Was this on a standard size fuel tank?
Yes. Standard car all round. Still had my winter tyres on as well!
Ed
Glad you’re enjoying it. Sorry it’s a bit long. 😂
What PSI were your tyres?
And I assume you had suspension in lowest setting?
Good video mate.
Running normal height. Only access, normal and high on the L322. Tyres were at 40psi if I remember correctly. The max listed on the side. Thanks. Ed
Brilliant video, do that in a electric car 😂😂
L322 best Range Rover ever made.
Thanks Jim. Ed
What a motor to do the challenge in I’m so lucky to have one also . How did the tyres perform with the higher pressure?
Suspension felt a little firmer but not much. I’d be more concerned about uneven wear across the tread if I were to run them for longer than the challenge. I’m sure that it helped though. Ed
Try Audi A6 C5 Allroad 2.5 TD. Challenge
Do you have one you could lend me? 👍
I have one in storage needing work.
With all the details you mentioned, you never say how many litres your tank takes!!
I did. 105litres
@@Back_Road_HeroSorry I must have missed it. Same as mine but I only get 488 miles on a full tank. Mind you, it's the M62 engine!
Where abouts are you based in the UK normally?
Oxfordshire. Ed
Why didn’t you start in john ogroats ,isn’t it down hill
Both are at sea level. The cairngorms in Scotland are the highest elevation and I wanted to have the car at the lightest there. Also the prevailing winds are from the south west so it would have probably been a headwind doing it that way. Ed
Wow sounds impossible. What was your average speed?
I averaged somewhere in 53-57mph. It was the longest 25 hours of my life! Ed
How many actual hours of driving to do the distance?
I was actually driving for about 19 hours. Ed
This isn’t helping me to not buy a Range Rover…
The only thing now is just the reliability then I’m sold.
Regards. Ed
