I'm glad to see an honest person who has run both Sthil and Husky. I know you need more time running the 500i. I'm sure you will enjoy the weight difference. I'm 71 years old. I'm done running real big saws. I still cut my firewood, 20 + ricks a year. I've been buying junk logs to cut up. It is good exercise for me. My favorite Sthil saw was the O44. It's big enough to cut a tree down. My favorite Husky saw was the 372xp. Never cut timber full time. However, I've spent a lot of time in the woods. I'm sure you will give an honest review off the 500i. I'll keep watching your videos. No matter what saw you use. I'm just here to watch an honest guy. Making a living doing what he loves to do. be safe and well. Ben
I can't believe I'm seeing this. But I love the fact you're not obnoxiously brand loyal. Great video and solid feedback. Can't wait to see how this progresses.
I'm 76 and just got done using my 500 i for a couple of hours. Bought it two years ago and wow does it save me time and effort. Best saw I ever saw. haa
See how it holds up. I ran the saw all day yesterday and there were a few things I didn’t like about the bar. I’m not giving up on it yet but we’ll see.
Here in Europe we have thousands of fallers using bog standard 500i's in production felling of softwoods and many hundreds of guys in hardwoods and arb. We had them released a while before they were available in the states and word on the streets is they are reliable. Now we aren't felling 80'' old growth, we fell where the processor can't get too and a 3' tree is a nice tree for us but we are enjoying those saws. I hope you get on with it, as you say they are spendy items especially if you're having a few mods and tweaks. We are paying the equivalent of $1,600 USD for a box fresh saw with a 20/25'' bar and chain. Regards from Scotland.
I’ve had a 500i for around 2 years now and love mine. I don’t cut nearly as much as you do, but I still run the saw 3-4 days a week. I will say if refueling a little more often irritates you it might be an issue. I would be curious to see how the porting affects refueling frequency, you’d think it would make it worse, but I could also see how it could make the saw run more efficiently as well. All in all the throttle response and weight definitely outweighs refueling in my application. It beats the hell out of lugging around a 661 the woods. I think you might just find that you like the light bar a lot. It would be awful hard to beat a 500 with a 25” or 28” light bar. Just my opinion.
I cut all day yesterday with it. Smaller trees mostly and I really liked it. As far as the light bars I’m gonna run em for a bit but I imagine I’ll be going back to tsumaras eventually but who knows. Fueling wasn’t as bad as I expected to be honest, so that’s a good thing. The main thing is it’s so freaking light.
Once ya port, you never go back! We've noticed that once you cut with the ported 500's in big wood for a few hours, they somehow "wake up" even more and seem to cut even better. NE Pa. Hope you enjoy it!
@Good.Fellers I cut firewood most of my life and cut trees for friends and family and recently started porting saws as a hobby but you are on another level with dropping trees. I never seen anyone cut them the way you do. It's a cool technique and looks like you get more from the bottom of the tree.
Hey it's the UP guy here. I have a husky 450 x torque and a Stihl ms 170. I use them to death. The Stihl has a 16 inch bar chain and the husky a 18". The Stihl, is a beast compared to the husky. I've cut 18-20" pines and some maple and birch pretty quick. The husky with the bigger bar and chain takes alittle more time. I think the weight of the saw has something to do with it. Maybe? I could be absolutely wrong to. But I love to watch your videos cuz I learn alot. I'm not a professional by any means. I'm just a truck driver trying to learn all I can. So thanks for your videos man. It's well appreciated 🤟🤟
The only opinion that matters is the individual using the specific pieces of equipment or tool. I'm sure stopping for gas and oil are a pain but unfortunately necessary. Nice to see you put family ahead of work, regardless. I use to wait for my sons HS baseball games to be over before driving for a buying appointment the next day. More than once I slept in my truck that night/early morning. Wasn't going to miss his game or the buying. Hope you got your fair share of the treats 😊
It was a good night. I’m a family man, I work a lot but I’ve been to every sporting event, parent teacher conference and all that B.S.. I take family and business very seriously.
Congratulations on the new saw! Those 309machine 500i really put up good power! 500i is a smaller fuel tank, and Ported ones are thirsty. Curious if you can do a trees per tank comparison? Excited to see the future footage/updates
Yeah, I will do that. My biggest concern was constantly fueling. I cut 20 some trees yesterday and it wasn’t bad. I probly fueled 3 times. They weren’t huge trees but it was probably the same as running a 395. I’ll keep ya posted.
One of the things you might want to check is the stock filter system. The single cloth o ring just isn’t enough to compress the seal. I and other noticed fine getting underneath pretty quickly. Maybe they fixed that. Be curious to see if you have a problem. I changed to max flow foam filter. A bit of a pain in the ass, but noticeably better.
I’ve seen everyone talking about this. I’m not saying it’s not an issue but I’ve never taken a filter off my saws and not saw fine dust in them. I guess I wonder if it matters. I personally would neglect the hell out of a filter I have oil. I’m definitely going to inspect it and add a washer or something if needed.
Ive always owned huskys. Hated stihls. But i bought a 500i. That stihl lightweight bar probably the best on the market imo. They do drink the heck outta gas
Yeah, I like the saw a lot after 1 full day cutting with it. As far as the bars, I’ll let yeah know later. I always considered stihl bars the best of the 2nd class bars, but I never liked light weight bars. My bar of choice has always been tsumara. They last the longest for the money but I’m not talking lightweight bars. So I’m gonna find out if the lightweights are worth the money.
Ive had mine for 2 years, boiler wood cutter. It wont run with my ported 395 but it has no business doing so. Pretty solid saw, especially stock out of the box. Time will tell.
Even the bone stock 500 is full of power and has that extremely light feel compared to the huskys. I ran one for a couple months and only issue was the bottom end torque. Stoping and starting deep in the kerf for some reason became an issue unlike the 661c. You learn to avoid it. We were running a 32" bar .063
Yeah, I don’t think a stock 500 would do what I want but hell I don’t know. We’re gonna put this one through the ringer though and I have high hopes for it.
I just bought a 592xpg! I looked at the 500i but I have a 572xp, 550xpg mk ii and a T540 mk iii plus a stihl 026 pro so I felt like there wasn't a place for a 500i. Maybe down the road, hell I'm just a weekend warrior anyway not a production faller/logger or arborist just a guy that loves powersaws and hard work. Welder/fabricator all week and trees after. Still really enjoying your channel! I'll be anxious to see how this 500i goes for you in this setting.
I have a ported one and a stock one, they are thirsty Saws, and I've always been a husqvarna brand guy,and still am in some respect but I've ran the old stihl s years ago,and the new 661 and 462 and for the power to weight that 500i has them beat hands down mine has been reliable so far,and I got a bark box on one and an egan straight shot on the other, and upgraded air filtration, but I've been very pleased with mine so far,I hope your saw does well for you
Holy ported Stihl! She seemed to run really good. How did she feel? Watching you spur cutting is always awesome. Right at the fell point that ole oak tried taking her with it. You saved her. Should be really good for awhile. If they ported her good she should hold on for a long time. She is always going to be a thirsty saw tho. Hope your halloween was awesome. Have a great weekend and keep it safe out there.
Nice. Hopefully she runs great for you for a good long time. I got this old 064 with a mod on the muffler(for heat reduction). The 066 or 660 i dont like as much as the 064. Not had much luck with ported saw myself. I've stuck with the stock.
Good lookin saw. 500's are great, i enjoy mine in certain scenerios but at the end of the day you still need mass to move mass, can't really fully change that. Plus i'm stihl a husky guy at heart, can't change that either
@saltymofo5870 Yeah, they recommend Amsoil at 4:1. I run the orange stihl personally. I don’t know if it’s better but a lot of oils I can’t stand the smell. I run a saw a lot of hours a week and I’m gonna enjoy it.
@Good.Fellers I run K2 maxima, one of the best smelling oils out there, Stihl ultra is the worst! I usually mix at 45:1 and then add a splash of whatever I get on the cheap for a little color as there isn't much dye in the K2. The orange stihl is just fine, although the ester based are better than conventional oils and the new synthetics are better yet, I just like the smell and have no problems with the K2... When guys ask me about oils and ratios, I usually tell them that 50:1 is better than 40: none 😂.
I have a bone stock 500i and it is a little thirsty in comparison to the my bone stock 371xp. But it is a faster cutting saw too. I can only imagine how good a ported 500 cuts. The power to weight on the 500 is fantastic.
I'm curious to see what you think of the 500i. A few things I've gotten from others with it have been: Hard on fuel, air filtration is not good, tends to be flimsy and floppy, probably due to the light weight, it's gotta come from some where. One thing has struck me in particular though; the 500i has been out for about 4 or 5 years I think, where are the other injected saws? Not just Stihl but Husky, Echo etc? Is this thing a one off? Take care man
So my saw has the west coast saw available kit so it’s mega rigid which is nice. Other than that it’s rips and I’ve only cut 20 some trees with it. I’ll keep ya informed.
In my experience, it burns more fuel than my 572 (stock). That could get annoying for you cutting all day. But the power to weight ratio is what’s intriguing . It wants to be in the wood, and the way you cut I think you’ll come to like it, but here for it no matter what.
I cut just shy of 30 trees with it yesterday. It was awesome! So far I dig it big time. I’ll know for sure in a month or so but for now 1 day in I’m a fan.
I’m just a firewood guy/landowner, but when I heard they had a fuel injected saw I was intrigued. I live in Western PA, so before the internet I had never seen a full wrap handle or heard of porting, but I gotta say I’ve tried both and like both. I have, however, taken the full wrap off my 572. I’m mostly cutting high stumps. , unless I’m keeping the log for boards. I just cut them where it’s comfortable to stand and then shorten them afterwards, but the full wrap gets in the way a lot of the time, and as you demonstrate back barring is just (if not more) efficient in some cases.
Buddy I’ve always loved my Husqvarnas but after having my 500i for a couple years now it’s the only saw I throw over my shoulder when I’m headed into the timber , power to weight they just can’t be beat, I did however throw on the maxflo air filter ( oiled foam filter) they stop the fines buck better than the stock filters and help with intake volume, when I hear folks talk about how thirsty they are I think to myself they must not carry a 592 around often lol btw a couple vids back we talked about Oregon chain compared to stihl, I nicked some large oak for a hurricane firewood drive, it did infact feel like they didn’t hold a edge as long as the stihl chain, must just be a little softer I guess. Best of luck with the 500. Equal opportunity wood slaying lol 👌
@@Good.Fellersyou don't have to do that just get an extra one of those little foam washers that is underneath the top cover anyways and just add to the one that is already there put a little bit of air filter oil or any kind of oil really just something sticky bar would work underneath the filter on the seal and you will be golden
@@Good.Fellersno it is not worse than others these people blow things out of proportions without that extra foam piece on top you end up with some fines at the top of the filter but not in the filter and without that little smear of barrel around the seal you end up with some fines that come under the seal of the filter but I never had any actually go into the saw
@@Good.Fellers I get that, I upgraded due to my wife not paying attention to my 500 strapped to the four wheeler and she smacked it against the tree and broke my stock cover lmao I keep a couple extra filters cleaned and oiled. After getting used to it I don’t think about it much anymore but it is more of a chore but damn they breath more with them
The 500i is a good saw. The 064 is only saw with a better weight to power ratio. When I saw the thumb nail I thought you had ordered from rip off saw (ripsaw). Glad to ordered from a reputable saw builder.
I don’t know anything about Ripsaw other than they didn’t have any saws available. I called 309 ordered the saw and it literally showed up the next day. I’ve cut and topped just shy of 30 trees with it and so far it’s awesome.
I won’t increase the size of my bar. I chose a 28” bar because it’s extremely capable of cutting all the trees in the area I work and I know how to sharpen and run a saw. There are a lot of guys on the internet running long bars that wouldn’t work around here. Stihl chain is best on the market hands down.
I’ve gotta say everything I’ve seen from 309 machine their saws are STRONG, I’d love to get my hands on one. And from what I’ve seen they definitely look like they spank a 592 though I will admit like the 500i I have a feeling it might be a while before we see really strong ported 500is commonly
@ I’d say the saws I ran stock for stock, the 592 is a little more powerful but once ported those 500s become angry and run well. I’d definitely love to run a really hot ported 592 and compare to a hot ported 500i
There’s no reason for a hardwood guy to port the 592xp because it’s plenty powerful. It would be a novelty at that point. There is a point in which it has so much torque or power that the chain can’t keep up.
They are great saws ive heard good and bad about them but they are definitely powerhouses and a good bit lighter great video brother run the hell out of that saw
Hey man! I need some advice on saws. I'm currently rebuilding an old ported 372, and have a mark 1 562. I don't need two saws within 10ccs for what I do, so I really want 1 saw. I'm on the east coast so we do a lot of hardwoods. I'm struggling between keeping one of the saws I have, selling both and getting a 572 or 462, or selling both and MAYBE chasing a 500i. Any advice? I haven't ran anything else in the past that compares to these newer saws, mainly 044s and 371s, so I'm out to lunch on which I should take a closer look at. I'd likely throw a muffler on any saw I buy, and probably won't have it ported, if that makes a difference. Cheers!
If I was gonna only have one stock saw it would be the 592xp. I haven’t owned a 500 long enough to comment on it and mines ported. This is assuming you’re cutting big hardwood trees. If your trees are smaller I’d buy a 572. Now ask me in a few months and I might recommend the 500i but I’m not there yet due to lack of experience with the saw.
@@Good.Fellers I'd say I'm closer to a 572 than a 92 for the stuff I'm typically cutting, so I appreciate that thought! I'll check back in a few on the 500i, but I've had many people recommend the 572/92, including guys like you, Richard Flagg, Donny Walker, etc., so I think it's a pretty safe choice all around. Thanks!
I like 309 due to there fast turn around time im still undecided on the saw i need more time on it cuts great but im torn on the torq feel like the other 500s may have had a bit more torq but my new saw may just need more time idk either way they do rip and they are hard on fuel
@@Good.Fellers I was talking to Mitchell as he said the other saws had a bit more torque. I had a 462 that wouldn't recalibrate on its own, once I did the hard reset, it was way faster in the cut. Have a great weekend.
@@Good.Fellers It is a 2cyl weed eater made by Stihl. I bought it when I had a lawn maintenance company. As well as the BR420, Blower, And the HT110 Extended hedge trimmers. The weedeater is only 13 years old, but the other 2 were bought in 2007.
I broke the connecting rod in the blower. that was the only failure. That was likely my fault for a bad mixture. But a $70 rebuild kit and we are back in action lol
I use husky, stihl and echo so im not brand loyal as far as chainsaws go. Im sure that portted 500i is sweet! Just a suggestion, and its probably already been made, I'd port one of those big blocks you have and throw a light bar on that and see what you think.
I would like you to try a stihl 462c. Yes 500i is very thirsty and amazing saw, but im sure you are a professional and you know how to use 500i. After 3 to 4 weeks you will get uset to consumption😉
@benbaker989 Hello Ben Ron here. I am 72yrs and cut my own Firewood also, and love replying to Friends of Goodfellers. I have 2saws both Stihl MS-260PRO 16INCH And a Farm Boss MS-271 20INCH BAR. I cut Log Length Firewood for myself only. Use it for my Woodstove Downstairs. Cut Oak, Maple and Locust. All Splitting done by Hand with a Fiskers Axe. Just thought I would text you to make a New Friend. Thank You stay Safe. Ron
Now my Friend that is Quite a Saw. Amazing Power and very Well Made. I have seen the Regular 500i and didn't know they made a Ported Saw. I use Stihl Myself, MS-260PRO 16INCH and a MS-271 FARM BOSS 20INCH. also the 63gauge RS Chain on Both and also Sharpen it the Way you do, because it Stays Sharper Longer and Less time Sharpening it. Happy Belated Halloween also. Still Recovering only 1week and 5days left to start Cutting again. Just doing alot of Walking getting back fit again. Stay safe out there see you at the next Video, by the Way I like your letter Opener, our Dads were unique in doing things. Ron
Interesting, I’ll let you know. I cut with the 500i yesterday. I cut 25+ trees and its was similar to running a 395 but super light. Way less fatigue hiking it around the woods.
I’ve been running my 500i against my husq 385 ported I noted a small low end torque deficit on the 500i. I tuned my chain different. Raker sensitivity but seems on par now
I too got that impression. But I wasn’t holding the saw, and that Stihl is quite irritating through the microphone in my opinion. The sound alone could’ve made things seem longer than they were. The lighter weight would justify slower cuts so long your body can bend over well. I’m looking forward to his honest conclusion, as it’s in my interest he likes Sthil. Only because I have the shops/sellers.
Just when I thought I had an idea bout how to cut a tree down and I see this. No face No back cut No holding wood nothing just a bunch of low cuts and it slips off the stump like it can fall anywhere. Im sure there is Logic to this but my mind is lost... I assume it has something to do with keeping as much wood as possible on the trunk so you can use the most of it without loosing some of the wood with a face cut. However You dont need much of a face in the woods just enough to tip it over and wedge it home. A shallow face would work fine..
I'm a Stihl man, just what I grew up with........but did your camera dude smack you or something!?!?!?!? I've heard a lot of good things about the 500I weight being the best! I run a 460 Magnum and it loves fuel but it cuts like a BA, won't trade it for nothing. Hope you have great luck with the 500, stay safe Sir.
@@Good.Fellers I thought you still had someone doing your videos for you, jokingly meaning did they smack you to get you to buy a Stihl. All meant in good fun
I'm a big fan of your channel and always waiting for your next video. I understand the weight being lighter but maybe I missed something. I didn't see you losing any socks over the way that saw ran. It ran good but I dont think it was faster than your 592 saws. But if you like it that's all that matters in the end.
Haven’t watched yet, but this is great. I love to see honest diehard fans tryout the opposition. I’m far from biased myself. In fact I break everything and typically know what’s best for (tool/vehicle)abusers. I run Ford trucks because Toyotas don’t have the performance/capabilities, I ride a Husky supermoto because KTM/Austria makes the best performing bikes(no offense Yamaha and Honda…both reliable with decent performance), and I run a Stihl saw because my dad always did and they’re what’s available around here. I already decided I would buy a Husqvarna saw after the…unbelievable…reliability+performance I’ve gotten from my bike. Being said I’m not very experienced with saws, but my dad knows a bit and from what I’ve seen Stihls last a long time. That doesn’t make them best. Since watching this channel my chains are sharper and I haven’t had to replace a bar. The Japanese is thicker but superior IMO. But my opinion means nothing in a field I know little about. Thanks for being open to the experience and I’m sure you’ll be honest. …can’t wait.
I run a Ford truck because they didn’t take the Bail out in 08. They mortgaged everything and had a little pride. I don’t run a Toyota because I don’t buy foreign products if possible. I’ve had several KTMs over the years. I had 2 and 4 strokes and honestly I love them. As far as saws I thought the 395 was superior to the 660 and the 592 is definitely superior to 661. But there is no competition to the 500 to test out.
395 plenty for a hardwood firewood cutter I ASSume? I respect giving business to American companies with integrity. GM started the bailout, Chrysler hemorrhaged money to be part of it, took our money, and are now European RAM/Fiat/Pg you name it. Personally, I’m just too hard on S and break the competition. I like older Dodges so long I have some U-joints and time on hand.
Awesome saw my friend 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼From the videos looks like the 592 cuts faster, I’m guessing you’ll see a difference on bigger logs ,take another swipe on the rakers n see if she eats , curious to see how it does limbing to… they like to just bounce off the chip , but the weight to power ratio w the 500 n the 400 are 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
If you flip it underneath to where the oil adjuster is you'll notice this little pin take a punch and just lightly tap that in and then you'll get another quarter turn on the oiler and I find that matches a tank of gas. Their little stingy on the bar oil in my opinion.
@@Good.Fellers man that’s it. It just eats. Little air filter tip. Bar oil tip. Then you already have a bark box. I did an Eagan straight shot which did help the saw to be honest. You will absolutely love limbing and topping with that saw. As long as my chain is sharp, I blow that filter out about once every 10 tanks of gas or so. And even at that point usually not any real performance difference that I can tell just doing some maintenance. I seen a vid the other day where they hook that thing up to the computer and it had been used as a mill saw and the thing looked absolutely punished. I don’t remember the exact number of hours and starts that it had, but it was super high-level. The piston and cylinder were completely fine. I was impressed by that just knowing the application of the saw and how many hours and starts that were on the saw. Running the stock air filter.
I own the 462 c and the 572 Husqvarna the Stihl has more power from the higher rpm the husky seems to cut better at lower rpm or less throttle personal opion both run 28 bar Stihl has bark box and skid plate on it besides that both factory. Stihl is life 😂
Im not opposed to sthil i have an ms 461 thats been a good saw, but when you bore into that first tree it honestly didn't look or sound like it does when you bore in with the 592! I refuse to believe that the 592 isn't the stronger saw, especially if it were ported!
The 592 is the stronger saw for sure. But I’m hiking 4-10 miles a day and I’m getting older. When I was 30 weight didn’t matter but 10+ years of cutting, injuries, and hard living and the weight of a saw starts to matter. I’m not selling my 592s I’m just trying something a little different. Time will tell what my actual thoughts are. Right now it’s just something I’m trying.
@Good.Fellers I hate to admit it but you're absolutely right the days of swinging the heaviest saw in the truck around all day and lovein it are behind me too! It's just common sense to make sure you can get through your day as safe and productive as possible!
I’m running the 462 which is enough to leave gas and oil at home for a load, but it’s no beast. I haven’t tried the 500 but…not even a 1/4 way through that tree is sounds like a Husky would be better. Even…if…a Stihl lasts longer, it’s not worth being bent over. And that’s an “if.” Maybe things get better……
@@Good.Fellersmaybe it’s the sound driving me nuts, but I got the sensation it was taking forever. I could be way off. It would be interesting to Timelapse a cut of an equal size/specie tree with the husky.
@fZionists78 Yeah, it’s hard to tell in a video but that saw in the white oak was eating the wood, I would definitely say it smokes a 395 and is close to a 592 with 8 pin sprocket. I 592 with a seven pin actually has to much torque. It over-revs to the point of being ridiculous. So there’s a fine line in what works.
That’s a badass saw dude! Yahteehey from windowrock, if u don’t want it I’ll take it my 290 farm boss can use a big brother hahah be safe out there dude
I'm still running my 290 farm boss as well. It's 20 years old and have had to do zero maintenance. It's built two log houses and has cut several 40-48" white pine trees with a 16 inch bar. Hope the 500i holds up for you!
I have Stihl saws, 044,440 and 660 but I have been thinking about a 500. Watching your videos has made me consider a Husky 592 instead and I’m really undecided now. Honestly that saw didn’t appear to be cutting nearly as well as your 592’s
@@Good.Fellers I understand the weight would make a big difference but I know my 660 is so much better for felling than my 440 but the 440 will do the job, but as the old saying goes,”there’s no REPLACEMENT for DISPLACEMENT!
Me personally think a good ported 500 is awsome in smaller wood but lack a little bit on the stump of a big tree. And them damn bark boxes makes a ton of noise. But in the rite wood they run great the 500 i have ran. On the stump they blow shit up in your face but i dont wear a screen but just me.
Yeah, so far I like the set up. We’ll see down the road what I think. I wear a screen because I hate getting slapped in the face when trudging through the brush. I haven’t had good luck with ported saws in the past but I’m giving this one a chance.
Its light , it drinks gas , cuts like a razor , i,'ve tried hot saws in the woods , do not work for me, but i hope it works for you . And i find it hard to believe , that you came out of the shadows 😅
You know what they say: Cool ain’t cheap. lol Ya it’s a lot of loot but this is what I do for a living so if it holds up it will pay for itself in less fatigue which equals more trees cut per day, week, month. Etc.
Welcome to the dark side. I have three of them now. I like everything about them except the light bar wears too quick. I have a bunch of Tsumura light bars that tend to wear better.
@ you might be right gonna check when I get back home but I take 2.5 lb over ported saw but one thing I love about 500 is best balanced saw in STIHL line up
@@Good.Fellers 19lb fully fueled full wrap wcs 3 points tank guard and foam filter fluids all way to top so do math 1.3l ~2.8 lb full wrap let say as sthil 3/4 ~ .7 lb , wcs tank guard and filter let say .5 lb total around 15lb or less like i mentioned before
So you don't bother with a hinge cut? Is their any reason for that? Not being a "dick" just curious, as I'm new to chainsawing and I've just got a chainsaw.
@@Good.Fellers You're obviously an experienced woodsman. I bought a MS 261c for a load of big trees on our land.... I'm learning. It has been quite scary cutting down the big Willows here, as they all seem to be leaning a lot. I'm in "England'istan" ... I don't like my country anymore. Think I'll stay in the woods.
lol, hey man I get ya. The way it was explained to me I had to try it. In a few months I’ll either give this thing to the old man or buy 2 more. We’ll see how it goes.

Making a living doing what he loves to do. be safe and well. Ben
Yes, I will be honest because I don’t owe the saw company or the porter. So far I like the 500i but it’s only been 2 days and 30 trees.
500I is a great saw! Power to weight ratio is awesome! You will love it! ❤
Hell yeah!
I can't believe I'm seeing this. But I love the fact you're not obnoxiously brand loyal. Great video and solid feedback. Can't wait to see how this progresses.
Ya gotta keep improving the program always. I’m not 100% on this thing yet but I so far I really dig it.
I'm 76 and just got done using my 500 i for a couple of hours. Bought it two years ago and wow does it save me time and effort. Best saw I ever saw. haa
Nice!
I bought mine This past spring....No regrets, kind of funny, first time you showed your face.....nice video.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Loving your content my guy. Happy cutting.
Thanks Bud I’m glad ya like it
I tend to run Husqy but those 500i's are sweet. I also think this Stihl bar will change your mind on using light weight bars...
Same price here, add another grand for porting and upgrades.
I’m cutting 16”-40” hardwoods and it’s doing a damn fine job.
Meant to say that's the price with local taxes (V.A.T) that we can claim 20% back off of if you are a V.A.T registered business.
@longlowdog 😎
I love that saw
Even Stihl will tell you they get better as they are run-in after about ten tanks and the computer learns the fuelling and local atmospherics.
@longlowdog yeah, I believe that plus the rings seat.
Man you are impressive with your skills dropping trees
Thank you sir
@Good.Fellers I cut firewood most of my life and cut trees for friends and family and recently started porting saws as a hobby but you are on another level with dropping trees. I never seen anyone cut them the way you do. It's a cool technique and looks like you get more from the bottom of the tree.
@matthewknight5641 There’s a lot of serious guys out there that cut like me. There just not on the internet.
Awesome, I’m glad you enjoy the videos. Be safe out there!
How do they compare with the RipSaw 500i?
@taylorc2542 no idea, they didn’t have any forsale when I looked
wow perfect timing for this video as i was just about to send my 500i to them for a port job! thanks man!!
Hell yeah!
Nice . It will be interesting to see how long it will last being ported with stock clutch, bearings etc…
Yeah, it’s hard to say. I hear nothing but good things though.
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing more as always!
Good deal!
I’m so glad you got your hands on one of these. Regardless of your opinion.
Right on!
So far I like it.
GF, don’t forget to drive that roll pin (the one close to the adjustable screw) in until flush so that you will get more oil to the bar/chain.
Yes I will be doing that.
@@Good.Fellers can't wait to see the results. It will be a true comparison. We know how hard you are on saws!
You’ll love the 592!
I’ve got 2 years of timber through my ported 500i. Still running strong! Hope your 500i holds up for ya.
I hope so too!
@ stay safe, I’ve never tried your style of cutting… I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable trying it but it’s neat to watch
@daveyslogging just be safe
I’m glad you enjoy watching
What part of the world do u work?
I have a ported one and a stock one, they are thirsty Saws, and I've always been a husqvarna brand guy,and still am in some respect but I've ran the old stihl s years ago,and the new 661 and 462 and for the power to weight that 500i has them beat hands down mine has been reliable so far,and I got a bark box on one and an egan straight shot on the other, and upgraded air filtration, but I've been very pleased with mine so far,I hope your saw does well for you
Yeah, I expect it will be a regular part of the job now.
Yes sir, she’s cut very well. A lot of power for the weight!
I hear every word my man.
@@willcarr5763 They are getting these saws so light, it makes me wonder about the longevity.
Nice review! Great feller and great family man!
Thanks!
I used to be brand loyal but Stihl have some really good bigger saws. I am really looking forward to the next month and will you but some more.
Yeah, I didn’t like the older stihls
But I really like the 500
Nice honest review. Cannot beat the weight to power. What mix did 309 recommend ?
40:1
@ 👍we run Amsoil at 50/1 with 90 octane non ethanol, but 40/1 is a little safer. Non of our saws are ported, but the WCS bark box definitely helps
@@CatsRcool-b5o Hey man, we can still be friends, as long as your voting for TRUMP we can put aside the minor differences 😎
This will be interesting . . . Anxious to see your video in 30 days. I've been on the fence about the ported 500i
I hope it’s a positive as day 1.
In my experience running those on the line, the chrome WCS side plate tends to pop off where as the stock one doesn’t. Just something to keep in mind
What do you mean “pop off” ?
@@Good.Fellers They just fall off :(
Does the saw have a stock air filter on it. If so you may want to change that.
It does, I’ll be keeping a eye on it
I have a bone stock 500i and it is a little thirsty in comparison to the my bone stock 371xp. But it is a faster cutting saw too. I can only imagine how good a ported 500 cuts. The power to weight on the 500 is fantastic.
Yeah, so far I’m highly impressed!
So, You are a Stihl guy now, huh ? 🤣
Just kidding, off course...Congrats on your purchase, may it last long & well !
Thanx for sharing !
I been a husky man a long time. But this saw is pretty sick.
Nice video Feller. Can’t believe you went to the Dark Side with a Stihl!
It’s a nice unit.
Wow! Finally get to see your face! Was thinking Darth Vader all these times. Cool!!!
Now ya know
I'm curious to see what you think of the 500i.
Why are you so worried about fuel? Is the gas tank small or does porting make it suck it up?
Small tank is what I hear.
I watched your video on the 500i befor I bought mine. I liked your video.
Happy Halloween 🎃 good luck with that stihl, I hope it does good 👍
Hey thank you!
Equal opportunity wood slaying lol 👌
lol, yeah Oregon chain is too soft. I’m concidering the max Flo. I don’t know if I want to deal with the oiling of the filter to be honest.
@@Good.Fellersyou don't have to do that just get an extra one of those little foam washers that is underneath the top cover anyways and just add to the one that is already there put a little bit of air filter oil or any kind of oil really just something sticky bar would work underneath the filter on the seal and you will be golden
Every saw I ever had gets fine saw dust in the carb
Is this one worse than others?
@@Good.Fellersno it is not worse than others these people blow things out of proportions without that extra foam piece on top you end up with some fines at the top of the filter but not in the filter and without that little smear of barrel around the seal you end up with some fines that come under the seal of the filter but I never had any actually go into the saw
@@Good.Fellers I get that, I upgraded due to my wife not paying attention to my 500 strapped to the four wheeler and she smacked it against the tree and broke my stock cover lmao I keep a couple extra filters cleaned and oiled. After getting used to it I don’t think about it much anymore but it is more of a chore but damn they breath more with them
Nice saw there. Stihl makes the best lightweight bars by far
Thanks
The 500i is a good saw. The 064 is only saw with a better weight to power ratio. When I saw the thumb nail I thought you had ordered from rip off saw (ripsaw). Glad to ordered from a reputable saw builder.
I don’t know anything about Ripsaw other than they didn’t have any saws available. I called 309 ordered the saw and it literally showed up the next day. I’ve cut and topped just shy of 30 trees with it and so far it’s awesome.
What’s wrong with Rip saw then?
I never said anything about Ripsaw, other than they didn’t have any saws for sale.
@@Good.Fellers no I wasn’t saying that I was asking the gentleman that said rip saw where a rip off what his issue was
I see, sorry I get so many comments it’s hard to keep up.
Ps. Lol I also would like to know what's the best chains to use for either saw. And can you increase the size of your bar?
I won’t increase the size of my bar. I chose a 28” bar because it’s extremely capable of cutting all the trees in the area I work and I know how to sharpen and run a saw. There are a lot of guys on the internet running long bars that wouldn’t work around here. Stihl chain is best on the market hands down.
@Good.Fellers ok thanks 👍
No prob.
592s aren’t a slouch but the 500 is awesome to run. It’s is incredibly lighter. Power is similar to 592 or a bit more in my opinion.
@ I’d say the saws I ran stock for stock, the 592 is a little more powerful but once ported those 500s become angry and run well. I’d definitely love to run a really hot ported 592 and compare to a hot ported 500i
I personally think porting 592 is wasteful unless you’re running a 36”+ bar. It’s overrevs with 28” on a 7 pin sprocket already.
@ that’s a fair point
There’s no reason for a hardwood guy to port the 592xp because it’s plenty powerful. It would be a novelty at that point. There is a point in which it has so much torque or power that the chain can’t keep up.
Ported 500i is badass. They are guzzlers, but well worth every drop of gas!
Yes sir
The 592 and 395 gonna be collecting dust now!! 500i gonna be screaming thru the hollers cutting thru that eastern hardwood timber like butter.
Maybe the future.
They are great saws ive heard good and bad about them but they are definitely powerhouses and a good bit lighter great video brother run the hell out of that saw
Well know everything there is to know about em in 6 months. Lol
@Good.Fellers hell yeah I know you'll put it to the test brother lol
Thanks!
@nervfps definitely a great saw
I like 309 due to there fast turn around time im still undecided on the saw i need more time on it cuts great but im torn on the torq feel like the other 500s may have had a bit more torq but my new saw may just need more time idk either way they do rip and they are hard on fuel
Have you ran the other 500s?
@ ive had one done ripsaw and one by aaron lynch and ran those for about a year ive had the 309 a few weeks
@@MitchellsBackyardLogging did you do the reset/recalibration on the tune?
Know I started it, let it idle about a min then went to work. It’s ran fine and seems to have plenty of power.
@@Good.Fellers I was talking to Mitchell as he said the other saws had a bit more torque. I had a 462 that wouldn't recalibrate on its own, once I did the hard reset, it was way faster in the cut.
Have a great weekend.
Who ported your Sthil?
309 machine
I just rebuilt my FS70R it is 13 years old and still fires up on the first or second pull.
Don’t know what that is
@@Good.Fellers It is a 2cyl weed eater made by Stihl.
@gopherchucksgamingnstuff2263 cool
Are you guys based out of Allegan?
Nope
I use husky, stihl and echo so im not brand loyal as far as chainsaws go.
Im sure that portted 500i is sweet! Just a suggestion, and its probably already been made, I'd port one of those big blocks you have and throw a light bar on that and see what you think.
They have enough power
If ya port em they just over rev
@@Good.Fellers I suppose that's true. With a 28" bar I run an 8 tooth sprocket and keep the rakers down a bit to keep try and keep it off the limiter.
Me too. You can port the 395s but the 592s come that way from the factory.

Hey man this is just my opinion but I think your Huskies cut a lot faster and a lot better
Raker sensitivity but seems on par now
@@timbertuggy2398I agree with your statement. Raker sensitive.

@TheWildWestMill lol

Awesome saw my friend 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼From the videos looks like the 592 cuts faster, I’m guessing you’ll see a difference on bigger logs ,take another swipe on the rakers n see if she eats , curious to see how it does limbing to… they like to just bounce off the chip , but the weight to power ratio w the 500 n the 400 are 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Yeah it seams to have decent throttle control. It’s eats the wood my man.
If you flip it underneath to where the oil adjuster is you'll notice this little pin take a punch and just lightly tap that in and then you'll get another quarter turn on the oiler and I find that matches a tank of gas. Their little stingy on the bar oil in my opinion.
Hey, thank you I’ll do that today. Anything else you know to do please let me know.
Stihl is life 😂
Love it
Im not opposed to sthil i have an ms 461 thats been a good saw, but when you bore into that first tree it honestly didn't look or sound like it does when you bore in with the 592!
@mattlynch2823 Yes, I’m always looking for ways to reduce fatigue. It’s one of my biggest concerns in the woods.
@Good.Fellers especially where it's dam near impossible to find good help right now and your stuck doing everything yourself!
Yes. That’s a fact.
What's cost of the ported 500i?
Mine with the upgrades was 2600 and some change with shipping.
Could of got a rip saw cheaper wow
@@anthonyland400cyou mean ripoff saw??
Ripsaw 200 more and 11 month wait
I might be retired by then plus the 12 percent interest I charge on my money so that’s another 240
@QuercusAlba01 I wouldn't buy one either was just saying I pay 300 for my port jobs from a close friend and I love my ported saws no problems
I wasn't expecting a face reveal in todays video haha, I've only ever ran stihls we use 461's and 660's
Right on, hope you enjoyed it.
309 machine??? Interesting! I live in the 309 I'm going to have to look these guys up
Heys a great dude.
@@Good.Fellers welp You just sold a 261 for em my man
Right on
Finally 👍👏🇺🇸
Yes sir!
Good to hear from you it’s been a long time.
@ I’m always watching, liking, listening and learning. Wishing you continued success 👍👏🇺🇸
Thanks Bud!
I’m not sure what you mean in this comment.
Right on Dude!
I'm still running my 290 farm boss as well. It's 20 years old and have had to do zero maintenance. It's built two log houses and has cut several 40-48" white pine trees with a 16 inch bar. Hope the 500i holds up for you!
@@Adventures-with-Phil me too!
I have Stihl saws, 044,440 and 660 but I have been thinking about a 500. Watching your videos has made me consider a Husky 592 instead and I’m really undecided now. Honestly that saw didn’t appear to be cutting nearly as well as your 592’s
It cuts well, hard to show in that video I was in a hurry. I show more in the future. 592 is awesome but I wanted something lighter.
@@Good.Fellers I understand the weight would make a big difference but I know my 660 is so much better for felling than my 440 but the 440 will do the job, but as the old saying goes,”there’s no REPLACEMENT for DISPLACEMENT!
@ I reckon I agree but with that said my 3120 sits because it’s heavy and to much power.
Ima say it again, id be surprised if u find u dont like stihls lightweight bar!! They have the rigidity over all the others
Right on
Me personally think a good ported 500 is awsome in smaller wood but lack a little bit on the stump of a big tree.
@@Good.Fellers Hell yes. Keep making that dollar. Hope all goes good.
@ me too!
Never seen a tree fell like that, to get the most feet out of the boards?
Watch my channel, you’ll see a lot of it
Interesting.
👍
Its light , it drinks gas , cuts like a razor , i,'ve tried hot saws in the woods , do not work for me, but i hope it works for you . And i find it hard to believe , that you came out of the shadows 😅
lol, figured it was time
Not much can touch the 592, let alone knock the socks off of it lol
👍
Finally a face reveal haha!! 🤣
Ya like that, lol.
He's shown lots of faces, in trees lol.
Not a husky but still a nice rig
Thank you!
I will wait the couple of months until you give a used more review before purchasing. But oof, that price is stout!
You know what they say: Cool ain’t cheap. lol
Ya it’s a lot of loot but this is what I do for a living so if it holds up it will pay for itself in less fatigue which equals more trees cut per day, week, month. Etc.
Welcome to the dark side. I have three of them now. I like everything about them except the light bar wears too quick. I have a bunch of Tsumura light bars that tend to wear better.
Yeah, I’m sure I’ll switch back to tsumaras but the 500 is awesome
Uh oh, hes going to the darkside! Even a stock 500 eats. Cant imagine how much a ported one rips.
So far I like it.
@@Good.Fellers for sure! It looks mean.
Welcome to the dark side 😎
Stihl pro saws, durable in any element
Thank you!
i run husqvarna but my 14 yr old son runs stihl id be lying if i say i don't pick his saw up and rip it i secretly like it lol
Lol
Boy those walnut trees must of brought a hell of a price if your spending all this money of
Stihl products! lol JK Its a sweet fucking saw!
Yeah I’ve cut about 30 trees with it so far. It’s surprisingly powerful.
592 is only 0.6 lb heavier
It’s 2.4lbs by manufacture specks lighter
@ you might be right gonna check when I get back home but I take 2.5 lb over ported saw but one thing I love about 500 is best balanced saw in STIHL line up
@jeepxj4bt right on
@@Good.Fellers 19lb fully fueled full wrap wcs 3 points tank guard and foam filter fluids all way to top so do math 1.3l ~2.8 lb full wrap let say as sthil 3/4 ~ .7 lb , wcs tank guard and filter let say .5 lb total around 15lb or less like i mentioned before
Walkerized !
No sir
Say I use a stihl 361 chainsaw, He is very strong
Nice
So you don't bother with a hinge cut? Is their any reason for that? Not being a "dick" just curious, as I'm new to chainsawing and I've just got a chainsaw.
I cut a lot of different ways
I do whatever I can to prevent loss of profits
@@Good.Fellers You're obviously an experienced woodsman. I bought a MS 261c for a load of big trees on our land.... I'm learning. It has been quite scary cutting down the big Willows here, as they all seem to be leaning a lot. I'm in "England'istan" ... I don't like my country anymore. Think I'll stay in the woods.
@ReggieChump I try to stay in the woods most days it’s safer than town.
Yesss, come to the dark side 😂
Lol
Stihl???Unsubscribing..😂😂I wouldn’t mind trying it out
lol, hey man I get ya. The way it was explained to me I had to try it. In a few months I’ll either give this thing to the old man or buy 2 more. We’ll see how it goes.
It does sound good..We all have our preferences..my big thing with stihl is I felt like I would pull on it forever to get started..
@@Good.Fellers It being Saturday after a week of cutting some tough terrain I was sold on it being light..be safe man keeep videos coming
@caseyc4516 I wasn’t a 066 660 fan but this saws a little different.
I see you're not wearing a mask, and trying a Stihl.
Crazy times
I had the idea you didn't want your identity to be exactly known??? Stihl and Husqvarna are both good machines. I own one of each.
