      Except that "cyberpsychosis" is an excuse for this version of America not addressing the combination of physical and mental stress/illnesses that happen. That's what it REALLY is. "cyberpsychosis" is bullshit. What happens is that people snap, because the world around them is insane and grinds them into the dirt, and the things they shove into their body exacerbate their physical and mental stress. They don't "reach a point" where suddenly they're a cyberpsycho, they suffer the sum total of physical and mental stress and damage, and suffer a mental break. THAT'S IT. Maine didn't "become a cyberpsycho," he had a mental break. If this version of America gave a shit about people they would be able to put him into a facility and help him recover. Instead, they don't see the value in that, so they just let him die himself, ignore him, or send MAXTAC to murder him. Like they do with every "cyberpsycho."
      "Cyberpsycho" is an excuse to ignore the multitude of problems caused by this broken society.

      It's not a spoiler because it doesn't really get addressed in the series at all, but there's a theory that the creator of Cyberpunk 2077 pretty much confirmed - "cyberpsychosis" is just an umbrella term/excuse for psychological instability. And the drugs that everyone needs is really just a way of coping with the stress of using cyberware. Some people are psychologically geared towards using it more, some less. There IS a physical aspect sometimes when the stress is too much physically (like the nosebleeds), but there's a reason why MAXTAC is magically able to recruit cyberpsychos that somehow seem to get better - they have the goods to properly cope with quote/unquote "cyberpsychosis."
      In reality, what's happening is that these people are stressing their bodies and minds with cyberware, IN ADDITION TO THE INSANE REALITY OF THEIR WORLD. That last part is the key factor. They don't go crazy because "omg so much cyberware." Why would Maine go crazy from that? He works just fine. Doesn't even have a Sandy. He went crazy because the world got to him and he had a mental break. That's what cyberpsychosis is - the many ways that people "snap." And people can come back from that, but THIS WORLD (in particular this AMERICA) does not see the value in TREATING someone dealing with a mental break, so they just kill them. That's what it is.

      @@RabidDogma treating actual psychos IRL is already hard enough, but psychos with fucking guns built into their body and whatnot is just too dangerous to "help him recover". There is however a storyline in Cyberpunk 2077 where they basically say, don't kill the psycho's we want to help them. But yeah no, imagine a cyberpsycho is just a regular shooting in today's society, only thing is, they are more deadly.

      Yeah I really liked that Mike Pondsmith went out of his way to clarify what used to be a theory. Chroming up itself doesn't make you any more or less likely to go psycho. It's when chroming up is compensating for something that is eating away at you. Kinda like someone could be partying all the time and drink a lot, but they are not actually an alcoholic, but then you have that other person that might only drink once or twice a week but desperately need those drinks to drown out their problems and eventually become alcoholics.
      Hence why so many stories involve warvets going cyberpsycho because obviously, just like in real life, warvets often come back from active service with PTSD and it's far too rare for it to be sufficiently treated. So chrome does to them, what heroin and meth do to some of them in real life.
      Maine was doing okay because he had a team working like a family, until he had to deal with the loss of Gloria and Pilar, more or less "having to take care of/having responsibility for" David (eventhough he acted like that wasn't the case) and getting the feeling thgat Faraday wasn't being honest/was setting them up. All of a sudden every aspect of his life had spun out of control, so he opened his mind to the psychosis for the first time.
      Adam Smasher can not go cyberpsycho because while he is chromed up to a ridiculous degree none of the chroming is compensating for any feeling of powerlessness or another mental problem. He likes killing and the implants are simply a tool that helps him do that, nothing more, nothing less. Among people going "I need to drink a few beers to wash away the images of my dead family members." and "I need a beer to recover from a stressful day." Smasher is literally just the dude going "I drink cause I'm thirsty and I like the taste. Nothing else."
      SPOILERS (for anyone that has not watched past this episode of Edgerunners)
      David on the other hand was stable at first because he was already of a mind to deal with hardships for the sake of making the people that rely on him happy (his moms hopes and what he was going through at that school), giving him the motivation to keep pushing onward when others might already give up. He was also lucky enough to immediately find a new surrogate family after losing his mom, which kept him even more stable. Then you take away Pilar, Dorio and Maine and have Lucy shut herself off because she is busy trying to save his life and he's suddenly left alone with all of his problems and they are bigger than they have ever been before. That's what messed him up, not chroming up more. Kinda sad actually that Becca was the only person aware enough and invested enough to be someone he can talk to, but even if she was awesome for trying a single hyperaggressive badass-gremlin can't really cover all the bases all of these people did, all on her own.

    I think people are missing the underline meaning of what maine means and why he pushed himself to be as chromed out as he is. He was a sports/Athletic junkie. He was told he couldnt push himself even further and get better so he wanted to do what ever he could to push himself there.

      Don't think so. The reality of being an Edgerunner is that the more famous you become, the more enemies you make. So you end up in this bizzare arms race of who can become and stay strong the fastest. Maine was the leader of the group, so he ends up on all the jobs, so he gets targetted and relied upon the most, so he ends up being the most chromed out.

    To explain the ice bath... when netrunners deep dive their body function like an overclocked pc, if they don't have anything to control their body temperature they literally FRY.
    There are fancy chairs that come with all the equipment and whatnot to do that, but most of the great netrunners of the world came from the streets where access to those chairs doesn't come easy, so they improvise... so, the ice bath.
    And one more tidbit about Maine... the shotgun he is using in this episode is a smartgun that has a function that the bullets track their targets, but for it to function the user needs a secondary implant that connects the user to the gun system so that the user field of vision works as a detection system, but clearly, Maine isn't using the smart targeting which means that he is so overloaded with cyberware that he didn't have space for the targeting system. This serves as a subtle world-building detail for those that know.

    This episode is possibly my favorite, even though it's super depressing. The portrayal of what cyberpsychosis does to someone from both the inside and outside perspective is crazy, and how certain events can both push and pull the victim in both directions of sane and psycho. It's also the episode where... **spoilers ahead, don't show more if you haven't seen the show fully yet**
    Imo, we see David reach the peak of sanity limits, right before he starts his downward spiral into cyberpsychosis. We see the first glimpse of him starting to snap in the previous episode, where he *thinks* he sees the dead Jimmy Kurosaki look at him and smile. I think the prolonged sandevistan use and watching both Dorio and Maine getting torn apart by that explosion in slow motion is the beginning of what makes him snap

    I cried like a baby when Maine died. These guys get no peace. They're forced to live this life and it's a death sentence.
    But the writing is so clean and compelling. This is my favorite anime of '22 so far.

    Just for clarification for everyone cyberpsychosis common causes are either mental health problems like stress on the brain depression or schizophrenia or it can be due to drug abuse there it could also be do thanks to addiction to getting upgraded in Maine's case even though he also falls in the mental health case and those who know what happens at the end of the show that is completely Mental Health then Hardware

    • @Zikk0_o
      @Zikk0_o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it's the hardware that pushes the person's mental state through the wringer. If you take away the concept of pain from a person, it's only logical that they would start to develop unhealthy habits or have trouble distinguishing reality. Every bit of chrome added to a person chips away at their humanity until they finally break.

    • @kingkb54
      @kingkb54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zikk0_o I mean that is true and not true under the idea for example if you play the game you also know Max Tech every member is considered to be a cyber psycho cuz they love fighting and then there's other people that are highly chromed out that can take it but there are clear reasonings for it within the lore usually it's because they either have human relationships they have an idea of self in the case of Adam Smasher or they're they're in touch with their mental stability or in the rare case that where David Falls is that they're purely special even though I would say David does benefit from the human connection because of the crew

    • @Zikk0_o
      @Zikk0_o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kingkb54 There's layers to it of course. Max Tech are given a degree of training and therapy that most citizens can't afford. Smasher is full cyberpsycho, but he's unique in that he was already a high-functioning psychopath before the implants.

    • @kingkb54
      @kingkb54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zikk0_o The Addams Smasher thing you have wrong he's just a cyborg not psycho because for example in his own origin story it shows that his behavior has not changed at all before he got the cyberware the cyberware did not change him he was always a messed up person

    • @Zikk0_o
      @Zikk0_o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kingkb54 Yes he didn't change mentally, but he's still classified as a cyberpsycho because he meets the criteria for one. He has zero empathy and various other tendencies that a cyberpsycho would develop. He's mostly a cyberpsycho because he discarded his flesh completely when Arasaka saved him. He's only like 1-5% human when you see him. Again he's high-functioning.

    Maine was shown naturally as a marathon runner build great for distance runs but by the time we see him he’s huge like a body builder not great for long distance runs so it’s was like he couldn’t run anymore basically the end of the line for him due to the amount of cyberware, amazing symbolism

  • @rustykoper8264
    @rustykoper8264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For reference
    Сyberpsychosis - primarily a game limitation in a board game to keep players from becoming too powerful And according to lore, this is a mental disorder provoked by modifications, characterized primarily by a loss of empathy for other people and obsessions Everything else is individual, not all cyberpsycho immediately arrange a random massacre, although most show aggression
    The deep dive port connects directly to the visual cortex, which allows the netrunner to visualize the network as a reality, which helps to interact with it better, while through a normal connection, the netrunner simply sees the network interface, windows, lines of code, etc.
    And one more thing, since eye implants (or lenses) and a personal port on the neck are basic implants that most city dwellers have (like smartphones and bank cards we have in reality, you can not use them in principle, but you will be limited in simple things accessible to most) eyes also serve as an indication of some actions for others
    Yellow color - a person is talking on the phone
    Blue - the transfer of money or other information (or view information)
    Red - sending scripts, most often malicious or completely lethal
    The situation with red is more like a game convention, since what's the point of warning everyone that you will hack them But we have what we have

  • @prinzezzqtpi5437
    @prinzezzqtpi5437 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cyberpsychosis is like what happened to Doc Ock from the Spider-Man 2 film. His hardware's advanced programming overtakes his human mind, encouraging him to act in increasingly violent ways using the mechanical arms. It's like the machine desires to be used. Medication helps supress the effects along with a strong willpower and a deep well of empathy. Essentially: The more "human" you are, the more chrome you can tolerate.

Maine was basically his father figure and the fact that David's biological father isn't in the picture its not hard to see why he latched onto Maine as hard as he did. You can say he's stupid but he was obviously going through denial about Maine's condition.
