      I also said "Blasphemy!" before he did! I do admit it feels a bit outdated now though. But I'd still place the PlayStation controllers and the Saturn "3D Control Pad" as worse than the Dreamcast controller!

    The weirdest part about the Wii controller is that the D-Pad on that thing was actually really good. That's probably the last time Nintendo had a D-Pad that I actually liked.

    • @JazGalaxy

      I always felt that. I have huge hands so it never worked for me, but I always remember thinking that if I had slender Japanese hands it would probably by extremely solid.
      Meanwhile the Duke controller always felt great to me.

    Joycon controllers kept me from getting the Switch for 3 years. Absolutely amazing gaming console, but the joycons are too small and does not work for me. I use the Pro controller or a 3rd party Joypad instead of the joycons.

    The Dreamcast controller had a sharp D-pad that cut into your thumb, its circular shape caused wrist pain in your hands after playing for hours, the cord dangled from the bottom and got in the way while playing, and the VMUs were silly and poorly implemented in most games. ... But I loved it!

  • @mychemicalrobert

    I often used the original Classic Controller for the Wii, but I loved the Wii Remote for certain games. It worked really well for games where you would use the pointer to aim, like Trauma Center; rail shooters, such as Sin and Punishment and House of the Dead Overkill; and Zack & Wiki.

  • @geoffnaylor3734

    The non diamond button configuration on the GameCube controller is genius. Other parts of it are spotty but it's a shame that didn't become standard. The default diamond configuration isn't ergonomic at all. With the GameCube button arrangement there is a natural slope for your thumb to rest on different button pairs. Also different shapes contribute to the game feel. Attacking with the big A button gives an extra oomph in Smash, Resident Evil 4 or Metroid Prime for example.

    My top 3 worst i've used
    3. Wii classic controller - Good for retro, but bad for modern games on the wii, does the job tho.
    2. PS1 standard controller - Always felt cheap to me, even when it was new, no weight buttons felt weird.
    1. Switch Joycons - Absolute terrible design, feels cheap, super expensive and absolutely prone to failure.

      I guess I must be insane because I actually really like how the joy cons feel, and I like playing games with the two disconnected. I like the freedom that gives my arms to move around and still be able to use every button on the controller. The buttons aren't amazing quality or anything, but I never feel that they're bad enough to hate. I've had the same joycons that came with my Switch and they still work great. Obviously if you're a bigger person, you're not going to like how small they are, but I'm rather small so the controllers feel fine in my hands. I actually kinda like how they fit almost fully in my hand.

    I honestly have no idea what's so wrong with the 3DO controller... It was basically a standard Genesis/Mega Drive pad, just more sturdy with shoulder buttons, a headphone jack (plus volume dial) & a select button.
    Sure, it had the daisy chain link at the top, but the controller itself was just an improved Genesis/Mega Drive pad.

    It's so funny to me because I absolutely loved the Wii U, everyone else seems to hate it. For me it was less about games and all about Miiverse, I made some amazing friends on there and spent hours and hours creating digital artwork on that touch screen. I've had every Nintendo since the NES, but the Wii U was the one I spent the most hours using because I love doing artwork and getting amazing positive feedback on Miiverse was just incredible. I too hated the motion control of the Wii controllers so the Wii U was actually a huge improvement for me.

    • @arturboy777
      @arturboy777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Wii U had a lot of personality and care put to it. 90% of the time Miiverse was nonsensical scribbles by kids, but when I started finding users that would either create good artwork or make good posts and comments about games they were playing that I could follow, I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing how people got clever using it with games that implemented it.
      The virtual console was phenomenal. I could watch Twitch perfectly and ad free on the browser. It was a great console and great experience overall, it just didn't get great support for games.
      I sometimes wondered if some of those great artworks were done regularly with the stylus, with some Wii U art app, or somehow brought in from people's computers.

  • @bananonymouslastname5693
    @bananonymouslastname5693 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree that Nintendo peaked at the SNES controller. I always feel like a small minority in really disliking the Gamecube controller, so it's nice to know I'm not alone in it.
    I don't really mind the Jaguar controller so much. It's pretty responsive, and fits my hands pretty well. The numeric pad buttons are weird, but not a ton of games use them at length, and they're pretty useful in games like Doom for quick weapon select if you have the overlay or memorize the buttons for each. Most games just use the number pad for quick saves or selecting camera angles, really. Not trying to make a case that it's a great controller, but it's not a functional disaster. I'll take it over the 3DO daisy chain debacle for sure.
    I like the Wii U gamepad okay. I enjoyed playing Super Mario 3D World with it, and it's a must for Nintendoland.
    I personally hate the Atari 2600 joysticks. I spent decades fighting with those spongey things, hitting accidental diagonals and wearing blisters imto my palm. When I learned now to wire in my own microswitched arcade sticks and buttons, it completely changed how much I enjoy my 2600. Leaf switches probably would've been more period-accurate, but it's still a breeze playing with a good stick.
    I honestly hate Sony's D-pads from PS1-3. The gap in the center always left callouses on my thumbs. The PS4 contoured in to make it far more comfortable.
    Joycons may be some of my least favorites. Just too small with no viable D-pad.

    • @corey2232
      @corey2232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The GC controller has so much wrong with it, people just like it due to nostalgia & it being ergonomically comfortable.
      The easiest way to determine success for a controller is to see how many of its features were carried over or used again, & Nintendo basically left everything they tried with the GC behind. The jellybean-non-uniform buttons, the one-off/stiff Z-button, the giant analogue triggers that could be pushed inward, the tiny D-pad, the tiny C-stick with no thumb grip... Oh, and the lack of sticks that can be pressed in, something they now do.

    as a former hardcore segakid, i wholeheartedly agree. the dreamcast controller is absolutely the best looking controller of all time (especially with the VMU in it), and i will fight anyone who disagree. but sadly it's just not as great to use.
    having the balls to bash some of the most legendary controllers, exactly because you actually use them. you don't just worship them because they're "retro" or because they have legendary status. you speak from experience. only you can do this, johnny. this is why we love you. never stop being you, man.

  • @jessragan6714
    @jessragan6714 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm with you on most of these choices, and kudos for having the courage to pick controllers for popular systems. I liked the Dreamcast, sure, but the first party controller is chock full of weird flaws (poor D-pad, not enough buttons for fighters, a cord that hangs downward, a window for that pointless VMU, etc.) and the third party controllers only got worse from there.
    I'm old enough to remember when game controllers were almost universally bad. Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Atari 5200... bleech. They're stiff and/or unresponsive and/or have keypads that required easily lost overlays and complicated the experience.

    I think we can all agree the original Wii controls were terrible with the nunchuck but what I loved about that controller is that it would play audio into the controller from the particular game itself sometimes as a way to give you queues or feedback. Once the Wii Motion Plus attachment came in and the individual combo controllers I liked it. I also do agree that the Wii U controller was not fun when I first bought the system like..I immediately bought a Wii U Pro Controller lol. The one I'm surprised you didn't list is the US/Canada Sega Saturn Controller...that thing was horrible and would hurt my thumbs. I didn't find out until years later that the Japanese controller and later editions of it was modeled after the Sega Genesis 6-Button controller but includes L & R which is more comfortable and accurate.

    The ascii controller actually has a spiritual successor on Switch... kinda.
    Some Chinese company made a wireless joycon grip with a keyboart, which is actually really cool, because they made it tiny.

    The weird thing about the NES-MAX is the black ring around the thumb disc is the digital input. So if you center the red disc, the distance between the disc and the black ring is zero input.🤦‍♂️🤣

    I liked the Gamecube gamepad but could never remember the button placement, had difficulty getting muscle memory down on that one. Completely agree about the Dreamcast pad, and yes 1000% the N64 pad is garbage, Nostalgia is a bitch. Anyone new coming to the N64 will agree the gamepad is terrible

      Yet nostalgia still keeps the wireless switch version of that dang controller selling for over 300 bucks on the scalper market. I honestly wanted one until I dug out my N64 to do a compare/contrast to the game performance on switch, and then I was like.. "..... freaking nostalgia is trying to wreck my wallet again. Thanks for the reminder to not play that game, OGN64~"

      I always thought the exact same thing. I loved the way it felt in my hands, liked the d pad and analog stick...could never remember where buttons are placed. DC pad would be better if the edges were a little softer...like Saturn 3D pad.

    It's funny, I actually enjoy the Wiimote and the Wii U gamepad, though I can understand why someone might find them rather clunky sometimes. (I like them in gameplay, but when going through screens to start a game, the Wiimote IS annoying, yes.) I'd probably put the N64 as my top worst because, as some have already said, it feels kinda cheap, the joystick wears out quickly, and is hard to quite figure out how to grip it.

    My 100% WORST controller was buying The NES Max in 1988, it was small, not very responsive, BUT I liked the turbo buttons. Other than the 'Turbo'. I bought it on a vacation and spent weeks dreaming of how this controller would operate, but in the end: a SAD disappointment. Wish I'd have saved and bought a NES Advantage! I liked the 3D0 controller, mainly because of the headphone jack, but the 2-player interface did, indeed, suck. My ALL-TIME WORST CONTROLLER (besides The NES Max) IS the first generation of Sega Saturn controllers, just felt "cheap" to me. Great video Johnny!

    Anyone remember the NeGcon controller for PS1? it was like a standard controller, but it rotated in the middle so you could twist it analog style. One side forward, other side back. Wip3out XL advertised it as the ultimate way to play the game and I always wanted one because I LOVED that game so so much. The controller was supposedly geared specifically for driving games as you could have the control of a gamepad with the precision of a steering wheel, but I never got to experience one in and actual game. I found one like, 10 years later in a bargain bin at GameStop and almost bought it until I picked it up and felt how... loosey goosey? .. it was. like.. Maybe it was broken, but there was no tactile feedback for when you had the controller centered, so I could just imagine starting a race and immediately drifting off to one side, or same thing with a straightaway.

    What I like about modern Nintendo controllers is that they’re not afraid to be experimental like with the wii/switch, but they always offer a more standard Xbox- derivative alternative so you’re not forced to use it.

    The controllers for the Sega Master System, which is my favorite console of all time. The d-pad & buttons on the standard controller were way too mushy & unresponsive, drove me nuts. I bought the joystiq controller to try an alternative but it was so awkward to hold, not to mention they made it left-handed. Thank goodness you can use the Sega Genesis controller for some of the games, but unfortunately that didn't function for a lot of SMS games.

    I hate the switch joy-cons! Besides the drift, the small buttons, the joy-cons themselves are tiny! I have to use my nail to press the + and - buttons all the time. I just use the switch pro controller and I’m good.

    The N64 controller, hands down. The problem for me is the existence of the C-buttons. What it meant was that we had buttons that also duplicated as camera controls, and thus there is no other controller in existence that can substitute for it. To this day, it's always awkward to play N64 games on any other platform.

      The n64 controller always worked great for n64 games though.
      Everything I think how terrible it was for any 3rd party game, I remember how perfect it was for star Fox, Mario 64, pilotwings and golden eye.

    I LOVE the Duke. It's still the only wired controller I use for XBOX games. I HATE the Type-S controller.
    The recessed ⚫ and ⚪ button were awful, and I HATE having the BACK and START button outside of the face of the controller. It's ALWAYS a chore to find them.
