I love that even a hate video from you doesn't feel bitter at all.
honestly its impressive, love it
It's a love for the art
It's his stories I swear. I feel like I'm there.
That's Johny for ya 😂
Look at the man's youtube's channel name. He ain't a happy console gamer for nothing.
John, your channel has been such a huge part of my life for so many years. Im so glad you're still doing this show. Random comment, I know, but I love these videos.
Same here
Thanks for watching! I do it as I am having so much fun!
@@HappyConsoleGamer same here, I consider you a youtube legend at this point, as all other forms of media and content continue to deteriorate in meaning and honesty.
"Back then we took the sloppy seconds and we loved it. Cause that´s all we had."
I spat my Coffee all over the Place, Johnny! 😄
But yeah, you are absolutely right with it.
I let out a really loud "HA!" when he said that 🤣 🤣
This is one we'll be quoting Johnny on completely out of context.
This is the most uplifting video about hate I have ever seen 😂
Phantasy Star III was one of my favorite RPGs back in the day. First game that I played that had multi-generational characters and branching paths.
At this point, after all these years, watching Johnny's videos became a happy ritual for me.
Thanks for keep doing it brother. Greetings from Greece.
I’ve been subscribed to your channel for like 10 years and never realized you didn’t like Phantasy Star III, I’m genuinely surprised.
You have to be a TH-cam vet to have been able to get “the mailman” as a username 😂
Shook.
@@theodoreasbury1533 i mean 10 years on YT not too too long. My current acct says since 2014 but i still have my older one that’s from 2006 lol. Crazy how long YT been around
@@statesminds holy shit I’m just now realizing ten years ago was still early 2010’s jeez.
@@theodoreasbury1533 This comment had me fucking rolling from laughter! XDDD
I'm part of a team on a pso private server that is reviving the online functionality PSO ep3, we have the game working well and we have a cult following. If you love PSO, you should try ep3. It's great fun, and fun with players. The offline experience unfortunately doesn't give you the full experience.
Love these videos Sunday morning. One of my fav content creators
You are hands down the best most likeable real down to earth youtuber/gamer/retro guy on youtube
The game that comes to mind for me was Bullet Witch, i remember getting it at a flea market cause the cover looked cool and i got home, played it and hated it so much that i went back a few hours later and asked the guy if i could swap it for Skate 3 lol
Something some people may not know, Phantasy star 3 did something really cool with its world map music : Every time you gained a new party member, a music layer would be added. So you would hear the full song only with a full party.
Your Phantasy Star III story has me in stitches more than a few times. Your use of the word "dingy" to describe music was hilarious. What a great story teller.
Johnny is not kidding, the music is bad. I remember playing it at a friend's house on their Genesis. That was a three day weekend we could never get back.
@@kadosho02 phantasy star online 3 for the genesis? what timeline did I woke up in now lol
@@Ayane_ke Phantasy Star 3. Not online. But PSO may expand eventually
I LOVE his lowkey purchase of a caseless, artless copy of Robotec Invasion. It's such a perfectly bitter move, and that game deserves nothing less.
You mean "nothing more".
@@vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898 No. "That game deserves a bitter response, and nothing less will do." Thanks for trying to correct me, though. 🤣
Dude I like that you never have sponsorships or ads, and you don't push people to sub and like too hard.
But he does have mid-roll ads. The last 2 were over 7 minutes of ads!, about a third of the total length of the video
Yeah but…you just skip after 5 seconds?
@@Chris-yc3mm Johnny makes free content with no sponsorships and dares to put 2 skippable ads in the middle of video? How he dares!
funny you'd mention your routine of making some tea and lighting a cigarette before playing a game... I just quit smoking on Friday after 15 years (I'm 35), and I'm feeling this will be the part of it I'll miss the most.
I quit smoking back in March, but i still vape for the routine of it, it's a bad hahabit. But I do miss the routine of beating a boss and celebrating with a ciggy, but it does goe away after a while. Congrats on quitting! Keep it up
I'm sure Johnny doesn't miss it. And you people won't either, sooner or later. Keep at it!
I initially felt the same way about Phantasy Star 3 and I think it was because it wasn't what I was expecting and it (initially) did not feel like it was connected to the series or like a real sequel to phantasy star (until you realize something in the plot). I hated it initially , but something kept me going and I came to appreciate it very much indeed. It really did something kind of bold for the time.
Even a Happy Console Gamer video about games Johnny hates is relaxing to me somehow. This channel really is special.
Crash Bandicoot (the original) was so freaking hard that it routinely made 6 year old me rage.
I recently played the PS4 trilogy.
During the later levels it was pure rage-gaming.
If you think that was bad, when I first got that game (or 2 or 3), I didn't even have a memory card, and my dad wouldn't let me get one for a while because he thought it would lead me to getting addicted to video games (never mind that I only had so many games and I'd probably play less since I wouldn't be playing through the same areas over and over again. Then again, my dad was born in '47).
Yoo Johnny jus wanted to say that I’ve been watching you since I was in high school n seeing your passion for video games, anime etc was so infectious that it brought it of me at a tough time in my life. Thank you 🖤
I've actually always liked Phantasy Star 3. It was the first game I played in the series, and I thought the whole multiple generations thing was one of the coolest things I'd seen in a game at the time.
I agree the generation part was interesting
Thank you for always making content when possible over the years. Your wife is a great fit to your personality and I admire it. Been married 3 times so I get the struggles. Proud of you and glad life has its downs for you for sure it has but those amazing goods and greats 👍
My ❤️ is with you man
I hated Secret of Mana for a very VERY long time, i hated the menu, i hated my companions getting stuck and stopping me from proceeding, i hated the fact that i need to wait after every slash of my sword. I gave up at the tiger boss.
Came back to it recently, gave it another shot and i surprisingly enjoyed it A LOT. It's weird to say but i'm a Secret of Mana fan now. Playing through Seiken Densetsu 3 right now and i'm loving it!
Secret of Mana is, surprisingly, the worst of the original Mana games. Weird because Secret of Mana is regarded as a SNES classic and the only one anyone talked about for years. WIth that said, do play Final Fantasy Adventure, the first of Mana series.
@@NukeA6 i did. Great game. Very impressive early GB game.
I'm surprised you mentioned Robotech Battlecry and didn't have it on your "hate it" list due to the infamous "Cat's Eye" mission where you were forced to do an escort mission with a ship gathering data within space debris and you had to fight off swarms of enemies trying to kill it... and they were EFFICIENT in killing your escort.
I remember bringing this up on Kotaku in the comments and one of the game devs actually replied to me apologizing for the absurd difficulty spike on that notorious level.
Yep that mission was the end of that game for me, pity course the game was solid and beautiful to look at.
That’s what great about games back in the day, when you beat it it felt deserved!!! One of my favorite childhood games!
I remember unlocking new mech head pieces or the enemy woman’s OP mech!! The transformation mid battle and shooting was so fun!!!!
My suep brother and I would play the pvp mode for hours and hours, sometimes not even fighting but destroying the environment and watching the tiny little ant people run! Game was ahead of its time for Ps2!!!
I have fond memories of Robotech. Macross was my favorite but I also liked the Invid saga at the end. I played the Battlecry game but didn’t even know they made one for the last series.
I lived in Valdese, NC and Robotech came in the local independent TV station in Hickory. They also had Tranzor Z which was an edit of Maizinger Z.
Very cool video, sir! You are an awesome content creator, even in a video about games you hate there are just such chill vibes. Very nice 😊
I enjoyed the editing and energy in this video. Somehow these bad games can bring out the best in us!
I for one liked Phantasy Star III with its fantastic music, to each his own I guess. The Quadrilogy is on the Sega Ages compilation in English if you change it in the menus with quality of life improvement, it can make playing 3 more bearable.
I really wanted to get into Robotech: Battlecry because I had been a fan of the series and the TTRPG. I got to the fourth mission before giving up and going back to Macross VF-X 2.
Daym I wasn't born yet when Phantasy Star 3 released
Very fancy card trick at 20:32 for someone who supposedly never plays any. Also, hilarious that you got yourself riled up 😂at the end
I loved pso3
I still play it from time to time. there is a working online server to battle online. it's great.
My choice is an unpopular opinion... Zelda BOTW. As much as I wanted to like it, I just couldn't get over:
-breakable weapons
-no dungeons
-vast open lifeless world, with lackluster music
Great episode! Keep up the good work.
I bought Phantasy Star 3 at launch, 100 bucks in canada, and loved it. Equal or better than #2, had great time with it, not disappointed. Really nice graphics and good music throughout. God combat.
I remember renting Phantasy Star 3 back in the day and being instantly disappointed in it. I wasn’t a huge fanboy of the series, but I had rented part 2 already and enjoyed the game and graphics. So I thought part 3 would be an improvement but it just felt like a half-baked game.
I loved Phantasy star 3. Never played the previous 2 or 4.
The carnival music is accurate though but I didn't get the same vibe from the menu music.
Really inversed story for me and PS3, it came at just the right time! I agree it's definitely the black sheep of the series but I really enjoy the music and replayability.
Oh man, I loved Phantasy Star 3. I just think of it as a different franchise than the main story. Robotech drove me insane because of it's crazy difficulty, but I still enjoyed it though.
Keep making videos man I've watched you for like 5 years you make great content
You are the happiest console gamer I ever met - and you look like Macauley Culkin 1:55
I thought he kind of looked like a young Layne Stayley in that flashback
I just bought Geneses Climber Mospeada DVD from a used record store. I am enjoying it so far and I am glad I found it since that one is out of print.
Lucky score, Mospeada is great
Anything Shining Force that ive tried PS2 era and beyond. I dont know why they felt the need to overhaul that series and make it something completely different, but it totally ruined it for me. Shining Force 2 was a masterpiece . Sad to see what those new games have become.
Shining force 3 was the last tactical rpg in the series. It was one of those early 3d games, so the graphics were kinda rough by todays standards. It had a pretty good story though.
Omg I feel your pain on the math thing. I could NEVER wrap my head around it. Science English all tue other classes I could understand math.... not a chance!
Great rant! I had to go to summer school too lol. Phantasy Star 3 is a bad game I love. I felt the same way about it back in the day.
Quest 64 would be my pick and I agree 100% about the card thing.
Excited for 2022’s HCG Christmas Special!!!! 🎅🏼🎄
TBH Generations of Doom might be my second favorite Phantasy Star. I was mixed on the graphics but i loved the story, the generation elements, monster designs, and the music. I thought the game being broken into generations also helped with pacing. I never felt like any portion of the story went on for too long.
Very well shot video ur card skit was great thanks for the effort
Tales of Arise ended up being a game I disliked, even though I really wanted to love it since Tales of Berseria is one of my favorite games. The enemies would just annihilate my characters, healing had forced limits which broke combat immersion, and items were way too expensive which made the healing/reviving process and buying new gear complicated to the point of being gamebreaking when going against harder enemies. The bosses were very unfair unless you played on easy since they had massive health bars while your party barely did any damage even with upgraded gear, and they would be destroyed instantly by their damage output unless you dodged perfectly all the time which not all the characters would since you can't control the entire party at once, and you were screwed if you lost your healers. It also got rid of things from Berseria such as being able to customize AI of individual characters to match your playstyle and being able to slot arts on the button of your choosing as you unlocked them to create combo chains, and you had way less slots in Arise than Berseria for some reason. That said, the graphics and music in Arise were very good since it's a PS5 game, and there were unique aspects to the combat I enjoyed such as the fire sword, and the new mobility options such as time-slowed dodges, which Berseria lacked due to you relying on blocking instead, and Arise did have better combo finishers as well.I also felt like the characters were average compared to Berseria's, and the villains/main party were stereotypical, while Berseria's characters were full of depth and felt like something unique. There were aspects of Berseria that remained such as free will being a centre to the story, and I did enjoy the party members enough to get invested in them.
The phantasy star segment was hilarious and had me spitting out my Sunday morning oatmeal 😂☝🏼
Yup, showing that demon wiggling his finger to attack - ahh I cackled!
Your comments on Phantasy Star III really rang home for me, Johnny. My brother and I rant on the same issues whenever it's brought up. I had to laugh - we always mention how lame a lot of enemy designs and animations are - specifically the giant enemy that attacks by moving his finger, haha! Another one that stands out to me is the goofy pose of the humanoid moose monster.
Some games I really don't like are Resident Evil 6, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 1 and 2 (never was a fan of the law system but loved everything else about them), Alundra 2, Silent Hill games after Team Silent disbanded, Star Fox Zero (the controls aggravated me and it didn't click with me until the last level).
It’s been 4 yrs since you’ve done top 10 favorite all time games, can you do updated list?
I had a bunch of games go the other way. Games I had no hope for but loved.
Been following your show for many years Johnny... love your attitude and feel you're allowed to express when you don't enjoy a game... btw, you'd hate my job because I'm a blackjack dealer in a casino lol... keep up the great work brother!
I always wanted to love Shadow Madness on the ps1. It had multiple discs, was and rpg, and at the time I bought it expecting and epic adventure. I've never made it more than a few hours into it before my disappointment sets in. I need to replay it now and see if when I was younger I gave up too soon.
LOL, Your description of Phantasy Star 3 kind of just just made me want to play it. I need to go play all of those Phantasy Star games finally
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is a game I really hate. In Europe we were at 50hz, Prime 1 is in my top 5 greatest games of all time, I NEEDED that sequel! I had to buy a brand new tv that could handle 60hz to play it, and boy was it a let down. Ammo for guns, no exploration, trapped in small domes for most of the game, unoriginal zero intrigue dark vs light story. I felt ripped off compared to what Prime 1 was and how deep that game went from the immersion to the ost to the mysteries and exploration.
I'm glad Prime 3 picked it up again after the horror that was Prime 2.
PS3 was my introduction into the series and is still my favorite story after all these years 😂
Me too
I'm currently playing through Phantasy Star 3 for the first time. The "Poison" status and "Death" are probably the worse of any game I've played, because the Techniques aren't 100%. So, I'm always carrying Antidote for what is typically a minor status in other games. The music isn't as great as the other two I've played (I still need to play 4. It's next). I like the Generation Mechanic, but the game overall isn't the worse RPG; but it doesn't feel like Phantasy Star.
Btw, Happy Console Gamer, did you at least pre-order the vinyl Soundtracks?
That’s hilarious, when you got the cards out I didn’t know where you were going then bam, love it. Begging for a Halloween special !!!!!! Even just stories of Halloween or scary crap or game discussion about horror games with Rob
The music during the beginning of the Phantasy Star III segment is incredible.
Been here for a few years now from the recommendation of the great bithead1000. He is still my favorite TH-camr but I can say for sure your my favorite Canadian! Love the show keep up the great work:) hope you and your family are well:)
Hi Jonny loving your channel have you ever reviewed rdr2 if so you got the link
8:35 lmao.
Man I was so bummed with Episode 3 card battle too. I gave it a good try and beat it, but it just wasnt what we wanted yeah.
At least the OST was good.
As a Transformers fan, Harmony Gold has held a cast-iron grip on G1 Jetfire because Hasbro licensed the VF1 toy from them... and were basically never able to do anything with it. There's a lot of story there, but that's the gist of it.
The DS SUPER MARIO 3 on 3 BASKETBALL, TALES OF ZESTIRIA, NBA ALL-STAR CHALLENGE, and Dr. CHAOS for the NES. All of these titles kick rocks!
Hey John I love watching your show. I guess I think of you as my “Friend” on TH-cam. One game that I hated on Xbox 360 was Viva Piñata. The game was so dumb and boring. I had more fun hitting the character with shovel, even though that the shovel is taken away after the third time.
What a great video. Your enthusiasm, even for bad games, is awesome! Keep up the good work. As to the games, I have all of them but I can't say I actually finished any of them or played them in decades. I guess I need to re-visit.
Even when you’re talking about games you hate, Johnny, I still enjoy it. Thank you for the warnings, haha, have a great week!
I love Phantasy Star 3 for a number of reasons but I do understand why some people don't like it. The Titan animation. Yeah, it's like a big middle finger, not good enough. Phantasy Star 2 battle animation was exciting, this one isn't. However, I do appreciate the difference in music style even though some of the songs are lame. Others are nice and the progression of the main theme as you go along the generations is a great implementation. Like you said, the dungeon songs are cool and there are other nice ones like the battle end, the victory theme, etc.
What I liked it the most was the somber theme. It's a very dark and depressing game in stark contrast with most of 2's.
I really like the branching storylines. You could go for the longest one or the shortest route. The game delivered in the end for me but I get it why some people don't like it.
I got PS3 in August of 1991 for my birthday. Exactly the same feeling. I played through it hoping that it would get better and it never did.
A game I hated was Wipeout XL. The powerup you wanted was the autopilot so you didn't have to play for a few seconds.
While I do understand why it is considered the black sheep of the series, I actually love Phantasy Star III. Sure, it isn't on the same level of quality as the other original games in the series and I consider those games to be among my favorite games of all time, but I find its flaws to be eccentric in a charming kind of way. It would be interesting if a remake of Phantasy Star III were done in a style to make it closer to Phantasy Star IV in gameplay, I wonder if that might get people to warm up to it.
I'm not that surprised you brought up Phantasy Star III. I still remember that old parody Slime TV did of you being like "Why am I playing Phantasy Star III? This game's terrible." Haha
phantasy star 3 was the first rpg ever i played and i was touched greatly. ost and bgm was the best part of the game. music had stucked in my head for years
For me, the first game that comes to mind that I hate is Super Thunder Blade . One of the first games I got with my Mega Drive for Christmas and I couldn't stand it. It was so damn choppy that I found it too difficult to make any real progress in. Thankfully, I also had SOR1, Golden Axe, Alien Storm, and Revenge of Shinobi to occupy myself with instead.
@@armorvil did you get the Mega Drive bundle that came with Mega Games 2 and 3 as well?
Dude I totally get where you're coming from but as a 5 year old at the time playing on my brother's Genesis, Phantasy Star 3 was one of the first games I ever played (maybe Doom or something before it, but nothing like this), and we had the strategy guide (which is an amazing strategy guide, btw), and that game is really something special.
Xenogears intro laid over you talking about struggling with math was brilliant 😂!
I watch your videos daily and especially when I’m having a bad day or hard time. It helps me feel a little better. Loved this video!
“Things would just show up or they wouldn’t.” Yup 😂 no tracking the package no email alerts you’d just be prayin
I think Xenogears might be my most "hate to hate it because I want to love it" games. I occasionally replay it solely to hear the music in context of the game. I could look past nearly everything, if it wasn't for the time I lost a boss battle on disc 2 that doesn't have a save point immediately after nearly an hour of text before the boss, when another situation does have that accommodation. And then Xenosaga 1, I played it at least 3 times, one flat out failure, one decent run, then a 100% run, but it felt a bit miserable at times, and was one of the many PS2 era JRPGs where they went all in on the graphics, but seemed to eat up all the disc space for gameplay. Then Xenosaga 2 ended up just dragging on so bad in, what I eventually found out, was the last "dungeon." I gave up. Never even opened my copy of Xenosaga 3. And to this day, I've yet to play Xenoblade games expecting similar dissatisfaction.
Any Wild ARMs game after the first. I hated the search system they started in 2. How can I find a single penny in the vast sand sea of a desert, but not the next dungeon without an NPC clue? Wild ARMs 3 changed up the combat in ways I didn't like, and 4 even more so to the point I absolutely despised it. Also, 4 couldn't even get the spelling of the first character's first ability right in the US version.
Other games that could be on the list are Kingdoms of Amalur, as in the demo when it was new, my character put their shield on their stomach when equipped in the tutorial. Then when I got the enhanced version, I found out through experience and reading on line that sneaky backstab rogues were basically useless.
After that, just about any FPS I can be bothered to feel enjoyment, even if I can beat them, as I'm terrible at them. And any game with forced parry mechanics is automatically hated since I have zero hope of ever beating it.
the cards going everywhere gave me a good laugh lol
PSIII is the Phantasy Star game I had growing up. I actually really liked the music in the game. The opening theme was epic imo. Plus I really like the dynamic battle themes that changed depending whether you were winning or losing. PSIV is still the best though imo. I don't think that's really a hot take.
I agree with you on the card type games. They aren't my cup of tea either!
Lol, your reaction to Phantasy Star ONLINE III: C.A.R.D. Revolution was the exact same as mine. I will never remember going to EBGames (I think it was EB at the time) and grabbing it off the shelf, then looking at it and reading the back... and then going home very sad without a game.
Johnny I've heard you mention you like to drink tea a few times. I would love to know what type of tea you drink. I like to add a little honey to my tea. I love drinking tea while gaming, reading or while having a quiet moment. Would love to see a video of some of your best tea drinking moments!
Great episode... I love the nostalgia of games you hated back in the day. All valid candidates.
I love hearing about your love for the phantasy star series. It's fair to hate on one of the games that's genuinely bad. Also I'm a fan of robotech like you and I'm so sorry that this game was so terrible. Love your videos and your channel you're one cool guy. :)
PSIII deserves more recognition for what it was and what it tried to do with the story.
If there is any fault, it’s that it may have been too different from the others.
One game I couldn’t understand to save my life was Legacy of the Wizard on the NES.
Ahw, man. I love PSO Episode III. I even replayed it earlier this year haha. Really incredible soundtrack (best PSO music, imo), love the story, neat spin on the PSO systems.
But I understand why people don't like it, it's a very different experience.
I really want Sega to port Ep3 one day.
Also really loved it, it was a well designed game, used to spend ages just playing the jukebox in the lobbies but… it wasn’t really what we wanted at the time. I remember playing it far longer than any of my friends, who just went back to 1&2.
Card games just never resonated with me for some reason (not even the mini games in RPGs like The Witcher or Trails of Cold Steel).
PSO Episode 3 threw me off entirely with the card system. I couldn’t get into it for a million dollars.
@@Aries73 It was more of a tactics game with cards used as your actions
DQ 7 for me. The Dragon Quest games as a whole are phenomenal but 7 just felt like a chore to play. All of the mini stories felt like a waste of time because there was no real build up or payoff to them, it was just getting the tablet to unlock the next mini story. And because that was the structure the game ended up being 2-3 times longer than it should have been.
Great video, loved when you flicked the cards everywhere 😂
Phantasy Star 3 was the first one I played so I have a weird love for it
Yeah it was the first JRPG I ever beat and only the 2nd I ever played after Dragon Warrior 1. I loved the aspect of the romance/marriage/generation system at the time. I doubt the game holds up very well though, not like PS4.
10:36 "after this--ADVERTISEMENT" XD
I pretty much hate all fps games, good 3ps ruined it for me, but on rare occasions, it's laziness, they can make the veiw point switchable.
i remember really disliking assassin's creed 3 when it came out. there were 3 main issues for me. i was never able to adapt to the new combat mechanic, which meant i had to rely on bullets. doing the main quest never got you any money, so i ran out of bullets when it got difficult. and the rooftop guards were more common and more aggressive than before, so my favourite mechanic from previous games was punished. they expanded the parkour mechanic to the trees which was amazing, but i wanted to run on the roofs.
i didn't finish the game, and i haven't played the rest of the series because of that. i have to go back some day.
Not kidding about waiting for games in the 90s to come in. I had to order PC games usually cause of the lack of selection in my home town in the early 90s and you basically mail a check off and wait...and wait...and wait...until one day a UPS truck drives up and the game you forgot you bought shows up
"Opening was kind of like a funeral" What, in PS Generations of Doom? No way.
I wanted to love Fire Emblem Shadows of Valentia so badly. I thought it would become one of my favorite FE games. I thought the concept of them remaking the second one on the Famicom was such a cool idea, and it was done very well. But I just couldn't get past how grindy it felt and the dungeon exploration. I don't necessarily mind those types of RPGs but not in Fire Emblem.
