This is the extended version that I did during my spring 2021 speaking (virtual) tour. From my book "A Paddlers Guide to Ontario's Lost Canoe Routes."

Kudos on keeping these routes current in people's minds.
Thanks very much for this!
One of your best TH-cam vids ever. Very enjoyable. Tons of info. If only they allow me into Ontario this summer!
Went and watched that documentary from the Thunder Bay museum, totally worth the watch!
Glad you found it. It's a great story.
Awesome message here Kevin - I too travelled many of these back in the day and it is so awesome to see the young youtuber crowd travelling these lately.
I also got hooked on Joe Robinet based on your fireside chats. He is so typically Canadian!
Thanks so much Kevin
Fascinating info! We have the book but this was a great reminder to get it out and start dreaming!
Great presentation. I remember that portage in Toronto so funny. Another family that helped open up old canoe routes were the Stoneman’s. They opened up and maintained old routes. They ended up working for the MNR.
My most inspirational books of all time for my canoe trips. Most of my trips are out of this book and now that my little ones are big enough to start portaging we will be returning to these lost routes. Best book ever and so very helpful. Wish you could redo all these routes and update this wonderful book. Best video you have ever done, brings a tear to my eye remembering the wonderful trips I had and look forward to those we haven't done yet. Thanks for this.
Thanks so much!
Well done Kevin. Creating awareness of these great canoe routes and reviving interest in them. I have paddled several of these routes and they never fail to impress.
I really do miss the Junior Rangers and Tier 2 Ranger program, glad to have been in the last MNR group. Would be a great education program if it was still offered for high school kids.
Thank you.
Really enjoyed watching this so much info, thank you Kevin!
Thank you so much for the presentation, Kevin. I really enjoyed watching. I've had the book for a number of years and have read it over a few times but hearing you speak to the routes make it even that much more enjoyable. I can't wait to get out again after the lockdown lifts!
Love this presentation (and the accompanying book!) so much! FYI, re Lac aux Sables access, they logged the area just past Ritchie Falls Resort last year, so the the roads were in decent shape (I made it in a sedan!). Going to knock off a few more from this list this year - I am indebted to your knowledge and enthusiasm, thank you!!!
I found this video after reading about a route in your book, and then searching youtube for more info! You're awesome, keep it up!
So many good ideas! Just absolutely dying to get out there again!
This was awesome, one of my most favorite videos on your channel now! I sure hope this book will get published again. I had to buy the old "no frills" 2002 version from an online used book store in the states, so I'd love to have a nice colour version.
Thanks for this presentation! It looks like this book is out of print now and I can't find it anywhere. York River and Chapleau-Nemegosenda River are officially on my bucket list for this summer!
This is brilliant presentation Kevin, loved it. Great oratory and stunning photos
Thanks!
Great presentation as usual Kevin...I suspect you already know but the Dunlop loop has a launch further up along the south shore due to cottage country propagation. I grew up in that area and never knew about this route although wasn’t very much interested in the outdoors at that time. I have yet to do that loop but if all goes to plan I will be checking it off my list this summer along with hopefully lady Evelyn river and maple mountain loop...cheers and thanks.
Thanks for the update. It's a great route - so is Lady Evelyn.
We do our part maintaining the Tatachipika River portages every June, Timmins 9 fire 10th anniversary 2022
That's awesome. Thanks. That's a great river.
Really good video! Going to have to get your book! So when I retire, I can just paddle each of them.
I've done a few of yours now. 😁
Thank you for this information. I will be purchasing your book and exploring some of these routes, and hopefully this summer and fall, I will now that I'm retired.
Great presentation Kevin. Hoping to get another one of these loops done this year once the restrictions lift. You need to start telling people about the new launch on Dunlop Lake haha, cuts some good paddling time off, especially if you catch a headwind.
Cheers!
Thanks for the info on the new launch for Dunlop.
Did the south river route last year! History of it is very cool but yes very shallow rapids and the biggest log jams we've ever seen.
It was once maintained by an outfitter on Round Lake - I guess they're not using the route anymore.
It was johns videos that introduced me to the infamous Kevin Callen , I've tried to get the book " lost canoe routes " based on his advice ...... 😔 No luck , but I do own some of the others 😃 truely an inspiration! Thank you for sharing the passion ( not only thru your adventure but also the littature )
Thanks.
I have a need!! For more cowbell!
Awesome book and equally amazing presentation. BTW, I still have my signed copy of "Ways of the Wild" from SSFC in '94.
That's one very old book.
I've been thinking I need this book for a while now but it doesn't look like it's in stock at the Amazon link.
I sent a note to the publisher about it - I'm hoping for a re-write soon.
@@TheHappyCamper I'll keep my fingers crossed! In the meantime, are these routes included in your Top 60 Canoe Routes?
@@CanadianSledDog Just a few of them - Chiniquichi, Wabakimi, Bark Lake Loop and Steel River
Been trying to find this book everywhere and nobody has it. Is it out of print?
I have the original book but want to buy the newer edition. Any hints? I have all my maps from the late 1970s of a trip planned from Allanwater Bridge back to Armstrong.
Try Canadian Outdoor Equipment store. They might have some.

Nope...

I found it with Very Canadian. Ordered and waiting for it.
I can't find this book to buy for a reasonable price anywhere
It's out of print and the publisher is not reprinting it. But I got the rights to it and will be doing something soon with it.
Ontario has such an amazing array of choices. It's kind of sad that so much is "lost" while everyone just seems to default to Algonquin. I mean, I get that the vast majority of people are in the Toronto metro area and are close to it and that Algonquin is rather vast, but as an American who, especially right now, has such a struggle to visit anything in Canada and wants so badly to visit places like Wabakimi, Quetico, Opasquia, etc, I'm saddened that Canadians who have it so much easier are not giving those places more attention and are allowing gems--big and small--to be forgotten and "lost."
And your friends complaining about a 5-hour drive to your Dunlop loop... It takes me almost that long just to get from southeast Wisconsin to my "quickie" camping destinations in northern Wisconsin. And my trips to our BWCAW are a 8-10 hour drive. I get the draw and ease of Algonquin--I really really do--but I'm still surprised at how "spoiled" so many are by it that even when the decision to go elsewhere is made that they'd still complain. I'm glad that they had a blast and hopefully learned that a longer trip can be very worthwhile.
