- A condensed re-release of the exceedingly long and slow seven-part series from 2017.
A seven-day trout fishing trip north of Elliot Lake that included Dunlop, Ten Mile, Ezma, Upper Mace, Lower Mace, Pathfinder, and Claim lakes. Upper Mace Lake was the highlight of this trip---a destination that alone was well worth the journey, and one I will definitely revisit.

So good! Upper Mace Lake made the route for me. Such a wonderful lake.
You were killing me in suspense on that first laker lol. That’s a great area, years ago I had access to the winter logging roads through a friend that was logging in Elliot Lake, I used there camps on the weekends when the loggers were gone home and I would snowshoe into never been touched lakes that were sometimes no more that 1/2 mile in diameter and spent weekends catching wall hanger specs. Fun times but we worked hard to get there “just to see”

Enjoyed it again. I missed two opportunities this year to go with my daughter but it was going to rain for the entirety of the two trips. Really hoping to do the same route that you did thanks for sharing about the depth mapping. I've loaded it onto my phone. Anyways enjoy your winter season coming up hopefully get a chance to do some ice fishing

You are right Jon. It is very complex and the variables contributing to mortality are many. My concern is that I bring lake trout out of at least 40 feet depth to surface. I am old school anyways and come from a long family of resource harvesters. We enjoy fresh fish. I only catch enough for a meal same day. The other concern I have is how much pain fish feel. Lots of controversy over that topic. Keep enjoying your fishing trips. My wife bought me a rod holder for my canoe after forty tears fishing without one. Cheers, Ernie.
That's a good policy. I won't fish for species that can't burp out air from their swim bladder any deeper than 30ft, but I always thought lake trout were ok...I've never seen visible barotrauma in a laker and I've caught many in 30-100ft...but now I wonder if not everything can be seen. The info I've read about pain suggests that they experience stress rather than conscious pain (coincidentally, I recorded a video about this topic on this Dunlop Lake trip: "Is fishing inhumane?"). Enjoy the rod holder Ernie---long time coming!

For sure. Fish ON-Line only indicated brookies and splake, and the bathymetry indicated that the lake was max 40ft deep. So I couldn't wrap my head around it in the moment. Never heard of lakers in a lake that shallow, except in the farther north lakes where the summer days don't get too hot. Nature finds a way...
Watch for Sun Dog's. I have been told, that whenever you see Sun Dog's it's an indicator that a cold front is on the way.
Jon - you are a very ethical fisherman. I never release lake trout. Look at Great Lake echo and the study done by Michigan on lake trout mortality on catch and release. They suggest it could be upwards of 40 percent. Food for thought. Different for warm water species. Shimano has done numerous studies in concert with mar and little mortality for bass, walleye and pike.
Wow. Had a look and some of the information is shaking much of what I thought I knew about lake trout C&R. But also creating SO many questions about the methodology.
Even though it seems like it's saying that the biggest factor is surface water temperature, it notes that: "Barotrauma was found in 32 percent of the fish caught for the study in Lake Superior." Considering that lake trouts' guts are connected to their swim bladder, I thought they weren't susceptible to baratrauma as long as they burp to release pressure. But maybe that only helps with their swim bladder and not the rest of their organs...
This I found very interesting:
"In Lake Superior results from tag-return data analysis indicated mortality of angler-released fish averaged 43% when the surface water temperature at release exceeded about 50 degrees Fahrenheit and was 15% when surface water temperatures were below 50 degrees Fahrenheit."
I also wonder about so many other factors like:
-how long did the tagging process take/how much extra time before they were released
-how would barbless hooks and a quick release impact the rates
-what are the rates in the winter for ice fishing
-how does a rubberized net impact mortality vs. having them flop around in a boat or using a fabric net
They mention these factors being considered: barotrauma, surface water temperature the fish is released in, capture depth, hook location, play time, handling time, and fishing method. But I would love to have the data to play with the variables myself...probably not a big enough sample size if you target too many variables.

Curious - how deep were you catching those splake? And how did you get your lure down that deep? I’ve never had success catching trout I the summer. Onto your next video🤗
I think it was 30 or 40 ft deep. I used a three-way swivel a bit, but also just a jig. Having the bathymetry was key...there were only two 40-ft holes on the lake (already shallow for summer trout) and they were stacked there. Thanks for watching Derek!

Hey Jon, great video! I’m looking to buy my first canoe (probably a prospector) for some trips for the summer before I head off for university and was wondering if beach marine is a good manufacturer, I was looking at their website but can’t find where to see the prices and the different builds/modifications and was wondering if you have to call them for that? I also looked at the nova craft prospector 16’ which I would love to get but if the beach marine is cheaper I’d rather get that and then later on in the future get a nova craft canoe, I’m mainly looking to paddle tandem with my brother and sometimes solo aswell, I love long trips (6-10 days) and I think the prospector is a good canoe for those types of trips, what do you think? I’m also 6’4 and around 195lbs so I hope a 16’ canoe should be fine for me. Thanks!
Thanks Pavel! That's awesome and sounds all too familiar. The 15' prospector I bought from beach marine (since sold it because four canoes was too many) was one of the most life-changing purchases I've made. I recall having to get a price over the phone. I went with them because they were about half the price of a comparable name-brand boat. I got it in Expedition Kevlar, single keel, flat bottomed, 36" beam, moderate rocker, a little over 50lbs. Would have preferred no keel for handling, but I'm not sure if they make them without but at least it tracks well. I did tandem and solo in the 15' but 16' is a better choice for a more frequent tandem paddler. Can't go wrong with the P16. Great cargo capacity, not the fastest but stable, maneuverable, and very whitewater capable. So I say absolutely, pull the trigger. If for some reason it doesn't work out I think H2O makes more affordable boats too. Used would be great but the market is so hot these days you might as well buy new unless you happen to find a steal...but they go fast

At 13:55, you mention that trout fishing in the summer without batymetry is a fools errand.. Can you elaborate on this? where do you get these maps?
For sure. Lake trout are primarily (often exclusively) found in deep basins during the summer heat. If you know where these basins are, it can be a huge advantage to fishing for them. Here's a video I made on how to find them in Ontario :)

Hey Paul, I don't know of any online resources where you can get this one, but it's in Kevin Callan's book Ontario's Lost Canoe Routes. Fantastic book with a bunch of incredible routes...only about $20. Worth its weight in gold.

No reservations but you need a parking permit if you leave from the north end at Flack Lake

Lol just my preference. Much more flavour in the meat. White flesh can take a lot of flavours well, but has less on its own.
