The Famous Canadian Portage You Probably Never Heard Of (Gateway to the Arctic / EP 1)

  • Gateway to the Arctic is a 6-part video series documenting the 2022 month-long expedition through Canada’s barren lands. The route is designed to explore the iconic landscapes of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut by attempting to travel over 800 km from the tree line of Great Slave Lake north to the Arctic Ocean.
We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Akaitcho Dene and Inuit peoples whose ancestral lands we traveled through as part of this trip. We recognize that our own understanding and experience is limited, and that Indigenous peoples hold the knowledge and wisdom of their unique relationship with this land.

Four of us (two canoes) paddled the Thelon River from Whitefish Lake to Baker Lake in the 60's. A wild and beautiful trip. Now 90 this year with tons of memories. I envy you guys.

in over 50 years of canoe and kayak trips I've paddled many places. But you guys know how to choose meaningful epic voyages, inject relatable history AND make me feel like I'm along there with you day by day, through bad weather and worse weather. So good! Keep up the good work. Your episodes stand out from the rest.

I found this channel last year when it was linked from another popular Canadian adventure channel. Every time I watch videos on these channels the one thing that brings memories flooding back is the sound of mosquitos buzzing around the microphones....funny in a lot of ways but that one sound gets me almost teary eyed.
This summer will be my 32nd and 33rd trip into the wilderness of western Ontario. These are fishing trips and while we don't canoe when we were younger we portaged 12ft aluminum boats. We now take ourselves down an old logging road and out onto an island for a week. I have seen other humans twice in all these trips. I have shared memories with my spouse, in-laws, nephews, friends and, most importantly, three very special people who made over twenty trips together. Time has reduced our numbers by two but for the past six years the two of us take a trip alone. Why? Because in quiet times we can still hear the four of us laugh, curse, and sometimes even slapping those "dam skeets".
Thanks so very much for bringing back so many memories :-)

As someone who has worked on the East Arm of Great Slave Lake since 2008 I have heard many amazing stories from the Natives in Lutselk'e about Pike's Portage and Artillery Lake - there are some MASSIVE Lake trout in that lake!! Many famous and historical people have traversed that Portage and area - Helge Ingstad wrote an amazing account of his travels all throughout that area and his book "The Land of Feast and Famine" is a GREAT Read!! Love the video you put together!
