D'angelo never once lost his soul. He came back even though they tried to make him one thing, and said no, there's a deeper meaning... This prayer I feel it, I know God hears it
I can relate to his troubles u want love but no one gives , man u go to drugs and religion, terrible mistake ....but musically prince was a mentor and ain't no better teacher ...I hear prince all in his music. I love him and wish him well
When I first skimmed through Black Messiah I wasn't sure what to think. But after giving it a full listen through a few minutes ago, I've come to a conclusion: D'Angelo is 3 for 3 with a trio of CLASSICS! And I can already tell that this is going to be one of those very rare albums, like Voodoo, which just becomes better and more appreciated with the passing of time. Love this nigga.
The Voodoo comparison is spot on my G, i too didnt know how to feel about this album until i gave it couple more listens. just like Voodoo it grew on me
This is not a headphone or laptop album, this tune in particular you need to listen to in a car the bass line is ridiculous!!!!!! Love love love this x
Im listening to this through my sony mdr 7506s headphones and this album sounds extremely amazing... Most of the people complaining about not understanding what D says just needs a proper set of headphones and all the complaining would stop. And yes the bass line is super Dope!
"Prayer" LYRICS Soul prayer, soul prayer Hallowed be thy name Kingdom come, will be done, oh yeah I do... the devil on your feet I know that he will, he will try to stop you From seeing your days But you got to pray all the way 'Til you get on I believe that some day we will rise I know that he will try to harm you And if you can I know that you will make it to the promised land But you got to pray, you got pray Oh you got to pray for redemption Lord, keep me away from temptation Deliver us from evil, oh yeah And all this confusion around me Give me peace I believe that love...
Some of the lyrics are missing on purpose I think. According to the live version its actually the Lords' prayer in the beginning.. Our Father witch art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done, oh yea I don't want you To meet the Devil on your way I know that he will He will try to stop you from Seeing your day, yea...
I pulled this CD back out when it made Rolling Stones top 500 list earlier this year and have been playing it nonstop since... the only way I can describe this song is "rich", you can almost taste it... like drinking chocolate. He says he has a companion piece to this album... we'll see if we ever get it!
everyone calls this the weakest track on the album.... i fucking love this one. i havent prayed since i was like 6, but this one touches my soul or something
It brings tears to my eyes that we will aren’t hearing music like this on the radio now. This is soul! D’Angelo is a one of one. From the instruments and vocal notes he hits
The filter used on D voice gives an incredible crispy-industrial texture, then the offtime rhythm of the drunken style drumming that Questlove (suspect him to be involved) THAT Ahmir actually puts on time, Church bell sounds like the song was cut in a confessional booth ! Boy that's art now !
IJ Rogers Wow I really thought it was Questlove playing especially that there are only 2 drummers for the whole record (Questlove and Gadson). Anyone has already the credits and shit?
Oh man Lord of Love. Marvin somewhere smilin sayin, that's my Godson. We need D' because our music is in a state. We need this to be a soundtrack of our times to counter the "other thing". Really appreciate this music brother. Thank you
Very powerful and relevant track, my favorite on the album along with "Betray my Heart" and "Ain't that Easy". Songs you can't & don't want to get out of your head.
one of my fav tracks off the album, we've been missing good music like this for too long. I just got back from protesting for fergunson case and eric garner in NYC and I came home and saw the album came out, and listened to it all. D'angelo blessed us with music at a very special time in our history, god bless him
That high note he hit so smoothly at 1:45 with the offbeat drumming by the GOAT Questlove and then that almost alien soundeffect in the back with that guitar ughhhh D’ Angelo is the GOAT man HANDZ DOWN
I feel like the rhythm of the beat and the music is in sync with me breathing... inhaling, exhaling. And his music makes me feel like he's saying- Go love somebody
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
There's enough room for the BOTH since mainstream music is total bollocks these days. Let there be 100 more "sound a-likes of either one of those gentlemen as it should not be team either or. Its real music and I for one am suffering from serious malnourishment. ....* hands both Atlanta ...and Xavier a cool drink and dances off:)
I have no words for this track right here, my face is scrunched up and I can't stop shaking my head from side to side. Jesus in Heaven. I can't stop playing it.
If "genre was a person". This man is a breathing genre 🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥. I have bumped/ played the album for straight four year. it's always gives me chills and sounds new every time. Thank you D'Angelo , love from 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Never get tired of hearing this song!! this is something I been waiting on for years with this kind of international flavor with that guitar! You can't say Dangelo ain't got an international taste with that soul. He make "The Heart and Soul go hand and Hand".
Hallowed be thy name Kingdom come, will be done, oh yeah I do, the devil on your feet I know that he will, he will try to stop you From seeing your days But you got to pray all the way 'Til you get on I believe that some day we will rise I know that he will try to harm you And if you can I know that you will make it to the promised land But you got to pray, you got pray Oh you got to pray for redemption Lord, keep me away from temptation Deliver us from evil, oh yeah And all this confusion around me Give me peace I believe that love

Lead us not into temptation...this song. I feel like getting down but have to remind myself: "This is the Lord's Prayer!!!" Forgive me! Oooooweee D'Angelo, them slaps is whoa!!
This record is so complex yet the message is so simple and it's also a shame how easy it id to always distinguish this track from the entirety of the album which speaks for itself. It's an anthem that shouldnt have been so necessarily forced or even conjured into the public atmosphere or consumer marketplace. Its also an anthem that only stands the test of time due to the fact that injustice is still the good news of the morning, afternoon, and evening. Primetime television and rhe entire consumer marketplace still feeds off trauma and suffering and every other injustice. You have to pray but you also. We also have to work to make it a reality. The world is great. People are great. Simply asking them to be great again or try their best is not reminding anyone of why they were once capable of greatness. Leaders need to learn how to lead by example. D'Angelo can organize the event and set a beat for the marching band and even be the master of ceremonies if need be. He's a gifted and skilled human being who knows the work that is required to at least strive for greatness if not perfection. D'Angelo is also an artist who got into the business of art and commerce. It's not his job or duty to constantly ask us to get it together or draw a roadmap on how to simply. Just be a decent person. Follow the Golden rule. Look at yourself in the mirror each morning and everyday before you walk out the house and tell yourself that the world can be a great place, maybe even better, but you have to play your part. For example: idk what I'm doing so now I feel bad yelling. Have a blessed day and thanks. Hopefully no one reads this. If you are, thank you. Its great seeing people connect to and with this record. It's such an incredible album so for a record to stand out (with no offense to any of the other tracks) is always worth a moment of appreciation when I dont want to yell and complain about how miseravle and unrealistic my perspective of everyone and everything including life as we know it truly is
Hi. I don't know how old some of you are that are leaving these comment or how musically involved you are. And I know how exciting it is to hear MUSIC being played by MUSICIANS these days, especially these days, but this is nothing new. It has ALLLLL been done before; the chords, the harmonies, the arrangements, the licks, the hits, the package, has ALL been done before. These are Prince arrangements, Prince chords and so on and so. D'Angelo is AMAZING. His first album is PURE genius. But this is taken from Prince's jazz albums, live performances, and essence. Great stuff but this is Prince doing Jazz/Neo-Soul. If any of you have seen Prince live and grooving with his band you know exactly what I mean. I was very interested to hear where D'Angelo was headed only to have a eargasmic deja vu.
you are absolutely correct but right now it is good to be a prisoner of the moment being that the level of music that exists now days does not equate to much, so to hear something of substance once again makes you remember how it use to be but definetly hear prince through out this whole album
Valid. But being a prisoner of the moment is why we are where we are in music now; this moment. We hear something hot and instead of appreciating it and studying it's genius and respecting it's originality,we emulate it over and over again. That's why you can't tell or appreciate one song from another these days. D'Angelo had an opportunity to make a sway and unbalance that trend but instead he reaffirmed it by digging in a box of shiny forgotten toys. I was soooo excited to see He-Man and Skelator on that Geico commercial it brought back incredible memories but I'd look like a damn fool playing with them at my age. Prince wore Jimi Hendrix ruffles and used James Brown licks inspirationally and in homage. D'Angelo was not inspired. To me he borrowed an era some weren't familiar with and packaged it as his own.
naw we are where we are because we've lost our soul, music that resonates usually touches a part of the soul, this stuff now days touches nothing and lets be hones how can a person avoid being inspired by the yester years even an artist such as d'angelo can only get so far away from what has been done as creative as alicia keys is you can still he inspired cetain melodys certain riffs but no matter what her and d'angelo still leaves you with something to appreciate.
drixxxe1 Hi. I don't quite understand your comment. I think I do so I'll take a shot. Once you've reached a zenith such as Prince or Michael or Madonna even, your influence, your inspiration comes full circle back to you. Example Kanye West, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, are all products of the aforementioned mega-stars. How can Prince then be inspired by those whom he has inspired? In other words if "When Doves Cry" is one of Kanyes' favorite songs and he in turns is inspired and writes a track like "Love Lockdown", who inspired who? Or Gotye saying of his hit "Somebody That I Used To Know" was Prince inspired, again who inspired who, regardless of time or relevance. If you hear Prince doing something "non Prince" it is most likely something he already inspired.
Wow. This record is so good. Listening with open-back reference headphones, (the gentleman's headphone choice), and it's as if i'm hearing music for the first time...

HE JUST COMES OUTTA NOWHERE AND GIVES YOU DOPE SHIT
When I first skimmed through Black Messiah I wasn't sure what to think. But after giving it a full listen through a few minutes ago, I've come to a conclusion: D'Angelo is 3 for 3 with a trio of CLASSICS!
And I can already tell that this is going to be one of those very rare albums, like Voodoo, which just becomes better and more appreciated with the passing of time.
Love this nigga.
For real!!!!!!💯
This album and To Pimp a Butterfly I will forever cherish.
aaaaaaaaaaaaamen
The Voodoo comparison is spot on my G, i too didnt know how to feel about this album until i gave it couple more listens. just like Voodoo it grew on me
You saw into the future my guy
This song feels like going to church with granny on Sunday mornings. Healed.
But suffering from a massive hangover.
Tyrone W. James not if you stay home on a Saturday night, sip tea n lisn to D'Angelo

ITS A VIRGINIA THING YOU WOULDNT UNDERSTAND UNLESS YOU FROM VIRGINIA ESPECIALLY IF YOU GREW UP ON THE JAMES RIVER BUT I FEEL YOU BRO
@@melvinstephens3443 I'm not from Virginia, not even from the US, not even Christian, and it brings me to tears
Really really smart move. They just don't see it yet🐻
so glad we still got this man after losing Prince. This gives me a Prince type of vibe. I can't stop playing it lately.
Kelle Carry amen to that
Kelle Carry they were friends who respected each others work.
That's a great thought. :)
Kellie can we say reincarnation of Prince....
I don't get the Prince vibe but I have listened to this about 1865 times ijs
We got MonoNeon now on a different funky vibe too. He was one of the last musicians to work with Prince
This is not a headphone or laptop album, this tune in particular you need to listen to in a car the bass line is ridiculous!!!!!! Love love love this x
YES INDEED
If you got nice headphones, this is definitely a headphone album.
Moses well if you wanna limit yourself...
Im listening to this through my sony mdr 7506s headphones and this album sounds extremely amazing... Most of the people complaining about not understanding what D says just needs a proper set of headphones and all the complaining would stop. And yes the bass line is super Dope!
Does Pino Palladino play on this track? Its Superb!
"Prayer" LYRICS
Soul prayer, soul prayer
Hallowed be thy name
Kingdom come, will be done, oh yeah
I do... the devil on your feet
I know that he will, he will try to stop you
From seeing your days
But you got to pray all the way
'Til you get on
I believe that some day we will rise
I know that he will try to harm you
And if you can
I know that you will make it to the promised land
But you got to pray, you got pray
Oh you got to pray for redemption
Lord, keep me away from temptation
Deliver us from evil, oh yeah
And all this confusion around me
Give me peace
I believe that love...
Some of the lyrics are missing on purpose I think. According to the live version its actually the Lords' prayer in the beginning..
Our Father witch art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done, oh yea
I don't want you
To meet the Devil on your way
I know that he will
He will try to stop you from
Seeing your day, yea...
You forgot the whole first verse going off of what the internet says the words are... the song starts off with Our Father who art in Heaven
That Church bell. Those claps..💜✨💜😒🎼🎼🎼🎼 2019
I pulled this CD back out when it made Rolling Stones top 500 list earlier this year and have been playing it nonstop since... the only way I can describe this song is "rich", you can almost taste it... like drinking chocolate. He says he has a companion piece to this album... we'll see if we ever get it!
💯🙌🏽💓
thats really it tho......it makes it for me....u must be a producer?
One of the greatest on the album. One of the greatest D'Angelo tracks of all time period, if ya ask me.
Quest calls this "extra drunk drumming that he learned from Dilla's drum programming" this album is beyond amazing!!! D'Angelo tho. Wow!
Chris Dave is playing the drums on this particular track....but this is def that drunk drumming. I love the groove of this song
Ok thanks X. I stand corrected. Its not Quest but Chris Dave but its still great drumming tho.
Yes Chris is to be praised..he's slipped right in...comfortably aswell! Are u goin to any of his shows?
moehammondmedia LOL
He is the Messiah of Neo Soul!
Yes let start this
Yes he is! ^^
everyone calls this the weakest track on the album.... i fucking love this one. i havent prayed since i was like 6, but this one touches my soul or something

WHO says that?? This is pure incredible.
People with insecure souls? They might need our loving prayers (who doesn't)

IJ Rogers Wow I really thought it was Questlove playing especially that there are only 2 drummers for the whole record (Questlove and Gadson). Anyone has already the credits and shit?
Yes!! I know John Blackwell drummed on the record as well but didn't make the album.

D'angelo blessed us with music at a very special time in our history, god bless him
Let's all say a prayer shall we? Let's thank Christ that fabulous music will always be made by leaders like D'Angelo

Creativity is back! Thanks to the Black Messiah!
We need some!
That high note he hit so smoothly at 1:45 with the offbeat drumming by the GOAT Questlove and then that almost alien soundeffect in the back with that guitar ughhhh D’ Angelo is the GOAT man HANDZ DOWN
I don't really pray but this song brings me back to those roots for a while
I feel like the rhythm of the beat and the music is in sync with me breathing... inhaling, exhaling. And his music makes me feel like he's saying- Go love somebody
Love yourself first
I know huh, Axion? I love it. :)
I lOve it too. It's unique music . I like all the voices
right
That guitar solo in the end! 🥶
D'Angelo new album saved my life!
I'm in love again. D'angelo is just too gifted. I hope to hear and see more albums come out. I've missed this soulful sound😃.
black messiah, the ancestors and those born after are truly blessed with this exquisite, voluptuous body of love! BOOM-SHAKA!!!
"But you gotta pray all the way 'til you get on.." ❤ YES & even then, you gotta stay prayed up. Sang that D'angelo 🔥🙌
This album could not come at a better time.
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen.

Soundtrack to the movement.
Sounds like something my dude Bilal would do back when Neo Soul took over. Great track BTW!
Bilal is a D wanna be. Don't compare them.
There's enough room for the BOTH since mainstream music is total bollocks these days. Let there be 100 more "sound a-likes of either one of those gentlemen as it should not be team either or. Xavier Leeds Your welcome!
Zannnnah I like both of them. I wasn't tripping in the first place lol
I have no words for this track right here, my face is scrunched up and I can't stop shaking my head from side to side. Jesus in Heaven.
I can't stop playing it.
Good to see people showing this album love. I got tired of seeing people whine on FB posts about how they wanted the "old" D'angelo sound.
Who needs old D'Angelo when you've got this, artists transform be it for the good or bad, D'Angelo for the good
The best soul truly has no tempo
My favorite song so far off the album so far along with betray my heart
Definitely one of my favorites.. The whole album is a breath of fresh air considering all the mind numbing music of today
dear god....thank you.
Happy one year #BlackMessiah anniversary
Dont never forget the Questlove genius poured onto this and all other Soulquarian related artists and musicians 🏆
Woah, He still has it. Soulful!!!
I'm a staunch atheist and this moves me
A born again D'Angelo fan. I never bopped my head to the Our Father prayer before. ❤ Amen 🙏
The vocals are so meandering and brilliant.
D would fit in great with the Gospel group The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
If "genre was a person". This man is a breathing genre 🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥. I have bumped/ played the album for straight four year. it's always gives me chills and sounds new every time. Thank you D'Angelo , love from 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Yeah you right same here it's a Virginia thing you wouldn't understand unless u from there 🤔 #Jamesriverniggaz
I heard this and I was like.... this is too fcking smooth to be a prayer..
I fucking love the off beat drunken drum style on this track!! Whoa Quest....
Chris Dave is playing on this track. Check his twitter
It's that triplet pattern he throws in there...that part alone makes the song for me.
It's so amazing that this is acutally played live... I'm barely able to program shuffle beats like this :p
Yezzir
Exactly! It took me like 3 days to properly playing it verbatim on the set.
We have a classic album on our hands..a term used far too freely..
Love how he let the beat ride at the end
"I believe that love..."
lovin this wholeheartedly...the Most High...One and none other...
This song is beautiful. The type of shit i expect from a messiah.
So funky. Gotz this on replay. So simple but I can't stop nodding my head to it. Bravo - well done D'Angelo!
Chris Dave is just a beast. He plays so much with so little, grooves like no one else, but can play complex jazz too-with Robert Glasper,
Never get tired of hearing this song!! this is something I been waiting on for years with this kind of international flavor with that guitar! You can't say Dangelo ain't got an international taste with that soul. He make "The Heart and Soul go hand and Hand".
Just a great musician. Also one of the beat producers of music ever low key.
Ring that bell
My favourite song for 2014 ......period!!
Hallowed be thy name
Kingdom come, will be done, oh yeah
I do, the devil on your feet
I know that he will, he will try to stop you
From seeing your days
But you got to pray all the way
'Til you get on
I believe that some day we will rise
I know that he will try to harm you
And if you can
I know that you will make it to the promised land
But you got to pray, you got pray
Oh you got to pray for redemption
Lord, keep me away from temptation
Deliver us from evil, oh yeah
And all this confusion around me
Give me peace
I believe that love
he's simply blacktastic!!!!
DOPE,NO DOUBT,THIS MAN IS BACK.
love the church bell.
One of my favorites from Black Messiah. This is a gospel song really. I don't know if I am hearing this correctly but I can hear church bell type of sound in the background. 0:35 0:47 1:00 ..

Sorry for my english (i'm italian), but who's innovating now? Prince hasn't been himself inspired by others artists? C'mon...
drixxxe1 Hi.
Amen
This is probably my favorite track the whole album is amazing tbh
FIRE!!!!!
Prince got Chaka Khan pregnant and they had a son-Michael D'Angelo Archer
