All done on analog tape too . No one does tha anymore. The main engineer said that D’s song writing process almost always is the result of hours and hours of the band jamming covers mostly. So for this album there are yundreds of hours of analog tape of the band having epic jams. And also all the stems on tape would be incredible to hear. Even the most insignificant passing vocal harmony usually had like 8-16 layers of Ds vocal harmonies. It would be so amazing if some of that stuff could be released, as I’ve really enjoyed listening to stems from Bowie the Beatles or like… queen vocal stEms are a trip. D really does belong up there with the greats, despite only having three albums
Unbelievably good. D'Angelo is a genius, no exaggeration. I thought the heights of Voodoo couldn't be reached, and that's why I avoided this album because in my small, simple mind I didn't want to risk tarnishing the image I had of him putting out flawless masterpieces only, after Voodoo basically redefined the standard that artists could reach. Boy was I wrong, a decade and a half later him and his cronies put out even more genius work. Could listen all day on repeat to his entire discography, would love to experience this energy live.
@@sisimmonds1472 That's great! I live in London but I moved here after he played the Roundhouse, would've been a legendary gig. I can only hope we get one more album out of him at least and he tours so I can see him work his magic on stage.
If you don't have headphones or a great sound system...plz...don't even. You are doing yourself an injustice and will miss the glory. Like the arbitrary bass drop at 0:30. Or the stupid sick percussion syncopation at 2:08. Or Pino just actin a damn fool all over the track. Missed you bruh! #realmusicisback
this is.....something else ! damn...i put my headphones and closed my eyes...let me tell you...he is something from another world ! And when your eyes are closed and he screams, you get goosebumps till the end.... Ow D´angelo thank you for coming back. You are gifted.
The true Guru is back, can't wait to see you perform in South Africa(Motherland), It's a privilege that D is still having the groove, hope the new generation could experience true soul,....Let the music play broda!!! Viva D' Angelo.....
This is SO damn tight! Don't think I've ever heard anything quite like it and I've been digging on music for a LONG time. Favorite cut so far!! Production is incredible on this!
I'm with that sentiment! Prince, is Prince! He paved a funky pathway for cats like "D"...however, Prince could never be this FONKY...his life didn't dictate this type of raw street-FONK! "D" & Bilal are the NEW Prince-Types, you dig!?! This album is FEROCIOUS {~_o}! I'm from Detroit...old-school Prince is still acceptable...but these NEW-CATS...next level!
+Stephen White because people thought he was going to do voodoo part 2 but he's just too talented for that. And preps forget that when voodoo first came out they said the same thing about it compared to brown sugar
I personally wouldn't say I hated it, but I definitely didn't care for it. Wouldn't be until 5 or 6 years later and a *quality headphone* listening session and it's easily one of the best front to back albums I've heard
Still the baddest dude around. Plays every instrument in every one of his recordings. Only uses a band to perform live. Just like the one and only Prince. I can hear Prince's influence in all of his music. No other artists alive can touch this dude.
Some of the artists on the "Black Messiah" album: Isaiah Sharkey, Jesse Johnson, Spanky Alford, Pino Palladino, Questlove, Chris Dave. And don't forget Russell Elevado. "Brown Sugar" was composed, written, arranged, produced and perfomed by D'Angelo. "Voodoo" was recorded in the Electric Lady Studios with great musicians. Pino Palladino told in an interview: "The first time we played together for the Voodoo Sessions, the chemistry was evident immediately. I felt completely at home and I was smiling. And when we went in the control room to listen back to what we've done it sounded even better." Alan Leeds told this: " D'Angelo always surrounded himself whith great musicians. But most importantly he gives them space. I don't think I've ever worked with a frontman artist that's as unselfish musically as D'Angelo is. He's like a jazz guy doing funk."
I can't believe I haven't heard of this guy before. I hope more music becomes like this in the future. I would not mind if other people started ripping him off
Sitting here in a college foyer just jammin. I've only recently got into the jazz/funk style but MAAAN. I've been missing out. Brb got to get my archeologist on and dig all through this shit.

My respects to the engineers who mix and master this album, sound dope as hell
Russell Elevado I believe engineered this project

I'd seriously pay to watch Prince's face while he listens to this album. Sure he'd be proud!
Rest in power to the GOAT Prince. D's cover of "Sometimes it Snows in April" made me cry
I’d pay half to watch with you ! 💜💜💜
Agreed
I think he would be very proud too. It's slammin'. Makes you have to move.

A music journo called this guy "The Jesus of R&B"......Nailed. It.
Welcome back, D'Angelo.
That phase on the horns though. Everything about this is impeccable
I just love when the piano just HITS you with the F# blues at 3.15... it always hits right in the gut! I love it!

Outrageous funk! If y'all could see my neck jamming to this! Thank D'angelo for bringing back the funk!
I meant to say thanks D'angelo for bringing back the funk. Moving my neck so much forgot to complete the correct spelling of the words. Funnnnnnky!
Love this joint. It reminds me of "Chicken Grease" from the "Voodoo" album.

Like the song Hey Ya by Andre 3000, this song is talking about the current state of relationships but it's so funky it goes over the head.
