Same here used to always drive r the Renault Laguna blue yellow loved but also smashed a lot of remotes on the ps1 as the courses were ninja hard in the wet
Yeah probably my favourite game ever, something about it felt so realistic when I was a kid. The fact the Renaults always pulled ahead by miles it felt like such an achievement to catch them. And if you were back with the Peugeots you knew you had fucked up😂
She still has curves too though, late 90's had the perfect blend IMO. I drive the road version of this car, she's an old banger now but doesn't look too dated and is still a classic Volvo from before the Chinese took over.
Yeah back when Volvo and Audi made classy and understated elegant cars, now they both make disgusting overdesigned price tag with wheels cars IMO like most of the "premium" brands.
Those where the days, and Volvo spent a fortune by any standards to try and get that engine to it's competitors level, but actually ended up getting ahead of them. The "stock" racing classes can quickly become extremely expensive when they have to work around the rules. Besides BTCC and STCC, they also raced the S40 at Bathurst in Australia 1998 (both whole race and short clips on TH-cam) and Rickard Rydell drove the wheels of it, as usual.
Yep, I remember reading an article in was it in Racecar engineering where they explained how the TWR guys ended up turning a 300£ stock cylinder head into a cylinder head that gave something like 30hp power increase and costing around 15 000£ a piece.
@@dudigi Yes they were not allowed to weld the factory heads, so they cut them apart and used screws to hold the new pieces together. An engineering accomplishment beyond anything remotely sensible, they were spending F1 kind of money by some accounts.
The regulations prohibited changes to the stock valve angles, so the engineers at TWR cleverly angled the whole head 🤣, a genius bit of individual interpretation of the rule book
BTCC was magical during this time. The starting field and the drivers were top class and the stands were full. My friend and I sat at home in Sweden and watched it on TV and cheered on Volvo. Really miss that time.
The S40 Super Touring is one of the most victorious STCC cars in the hands of Cyan Racing with a total of 22 victories during its five years in the Swedish championship. The car weighed in at only 975 kg and had close to 320 hp from its naturally aspirated five-cylinder Volvo engine that was equipped with an X-trac 6-speed sequential gearbox. In 1997 Volvo switch from 850 saloon to new model Volvo S40, at the end of year he (rikard Rydell) was fourth with 1 victory and 5 podium. In 1998, he finally won the BTCC title in a Volvo with 5 victories and 12 podium, beating Anthony Reid at the final meeting. He also won the 1998 Super Touring Bathurst 1000, sharing a Volvo S40 with Jim Richards. In 1999 he was again third behind the two Nissan Primera with 4 victories and 7 podium.
engine variety is something sadly missing from modern motorsport. the only sport that really has it nowadays is endurance racing but back in the 90s variety was everywhere. f1 cars and le mans cars with 8, 10 and 12 cylinders. btcc with 4, 5 and 6 cylinders. i really miss when you could tell what car was coming by the sound before you could see it.
Not only did the cars all sound unique, they also all looked unique. Easily identifiable, recognizable and memorable in every way. Over the last two decades, cars and motorsports have all begun blending into the samey boring looks and sounds. The lack of variety doesn't hold the interest as well.
The Primera GT was my favourite STC. Later on I owned the road going version and loved it. This and the late 80s early 90s Bathurst with the Sierra, Skyline and Holden's are my favourite race series' ever. And group B rally.
Them p11 SR20DE primeras are no joke. I swapped one for my l200 pickup sight unseen. And I was like wtf have I done. Pulled up to meet the fella to do the swap seen it was lowered big exhaust and all that i was like err fml. Deals off. Took it for a little test drive, and instantly fell in love with the primera. That sr20 was silky smooth, and all the extra nismo parts he put on it made it pretty damn rapid. I remember doing a quick 3rd pull against a civic type R and I smashed it. Got it off the clock in 3rd, still had heaps of revs to go, mine reved out to 9,200rpm and the intake sounded wicked as! I regret getting rid of that car. Was the rarer red top version too.
@@timfagan816 All that and they were comfy, too. Loads of space, long gears for the motorway. I had an air filter and a straight through exhaust and 18s. I painted the rocker cover ford imperial blue. Pimpers are rare now. Gave £500 for mine in 2008. Can't find em now and if you do you're looking at up to 5k.
Better than the official transmission! The Goodwood official videos always have microfone problems, sometimes you heard the car leaving the line when the filmed one is finishig. Thank you for sharing

S40 and 850 wagon, badass car
They sure were.
This was, by far, my favourite era of BTCC. Also quite possibly my favourite class of racing, period.
hands down, best era of tin tops.
Almost production cars.. converted into racing cars right?? So awesome!
It certainly brought smiles to my face. They were fast and furious, but at the same time didn't take themselves too seriously.
Возможно он это думает... Но так ли это на самом деле? Кто знает...
That 5 cylinder sound 🤤
Try explaining that to the likes of Sadiq Khan. 😟
Five power!
So difficult to believe that this car is over 20 years old... The super tourers were so far ahead of their time...
They really were so impressive
Remember driving this car in TOCA Touring Car Championship on my PS1 back in the days... what a car, and what a game!
Those old games were awesome imo. Graphics aside. Duke nukem total meltdown ftw!

yup it was my favorite to go car haha
NA race engines makes so beautiful mechanical intake sound. Audi A4 BTCC had that at its best.
Super touring cavalier 👌
I love the headlights and front and back boxy shape of this era of European cars.

5 cylinder, NA and a car which really based on a street legal version - great times these were! Thanks Bozzy for this footage!
Love that Volvo 5 cylinder growl.
USED TO DROOL OVER THIS CSR WHEN I WAS A KID !! LOVED THE SOUND OF 5 CYLINDERS!!!! MORE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD USE THEM !!!!
BTCC's Super Touring years were the best days of BTCC
Touring cars are the best. Makes me fall in love with nearly every car and dream of building a street sleeper
OMG, this car sounds glorious!!!! 5 cylinder 😍
Sure would love to see the Volvo 850 wagon BTCC. That car is iconic!!!!
LOVE that car! An estate has no right to be in a Top Tier Race, but DAMN, I LOVED it!
Same for me. Never seen that before, unfortunately. Hope to record it in the future 🤞🏻

Those were cool days for the BTCC. The V6 Ford Mondeos sounded really cool too
Had a poster of this on my wall when I was younger. Brings back some great memories of late 90s BTCC watching these go over Clay Hill at Oulton Park!
I loved how you got these super clean nice looking cars turned into budget (of some sort) track cars
5 cylinders and gearbox screaming, love it
that fuel injection setup is insane.

Did they keep the power unit from the 850. Didn't think the S40 came in a 5cylinder?
One of the best looking touring cars ever from an era when they were allowed to race properly
Toca touring cars. allways reminds me of the game when i see that car.
