- My first upload entirely dedicated to a machine of the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed is about Travis Pastrana's Subaru GL Wagon. This insane car has been built by Hoonigan Motorsport and Subaru Motorsports USA as the new weapon for the next Gymkhana video which will be unveiled later this year.
The car began its life as a 1983 Subaru GL Wagon, now named the “Family Huckster”, but as you can imagine not much of the original car remains. The original body panels have been tossed out in favour of bespoke carbon fibre pieces, while the car’s chassis has been upgraded to a lightweight tubular spaceframe. Under the hood a 4-cylinder boxer engine able to produce 862 hp, coupled to a 6-speed sequential gearbox and all-wheel drive.
Despite the retro look, one of the wagon’s standout features is its active aerodynamics: a big rear aero wing at the back that works alongside the hydraulic aero flaps on the front and rear fenders. On top, a functional carbon-fiber roof rack helps direct air into a NACA duct on the roof that feeds it to the rear-mounted radiator. On the inside, you’ll find and original GL Wagon’s 1983 radio and a 12-inch digital gauge cluster featuring graphics and look straight from a 1980’s sci-fi movie.
It was amazing to see Travis and his GL Wagon in action on Goodwood's hillclimb course as competitors of the official timed shootout. Travis managed to finish in 5th place with a time of 46''21!

it may not do very much in this situation but it can still do something on higher speed runs. Car wasnt specificly made to only race goodwood.

Love that you didn't add music, especially with the close up shots. I found myself immersed within the murmur of the surrounding crowd, almost like like I was there checking out the car. Very well put together video. Plenty of crispy and raw action shots from multiple angles that were no bullshit, gnarly, and down to the point off the bat. You've earned a sub from the US, cheers!

It's the way it moves around on its suspension I think. Modern rally cars are much more planted. This thing just looks like it's clawing for grip with all four tires.

weve loved this guy since he was 14 or 15 yrs old doing stunts on dirt bikes,and we never missed a x games when he was there,the best was when he pulled the double back flip that night was unreal and amazing.GO TRAVIS the most humble nicest guy you could ever meet.great sportsmanship

This is probably one of the coolest active aero cars I have ever seen, probably because you wouldn't expect to see a car like this with active aero. When I saw it first I was shocked to see those fins and flaps coming up, but it just looks so good with it. I would love to see it utilize this while turning as well

This was the star of the show for me. Mcmurty tech might have been quicker, but Pastrana was right on it in the flying brick. What a show.

This reminds me of my 87' Subaru turbo 4wd wagon. It was unmodified but did okay when used as a Jeep. Was happy to go 100+ mph on the highway as well.
my 05 na 2l forester still doing the same :D just pop the ac on put tranny on low and off to the woods. tows a trailer in the highway like nothing.
A little word of advice. A 1987 Pontiac Grand Am may be fun on logging roads but is in no way built to go airborne, not even a little bit.

How is Travis such a beast in everything he does? Such an insane level of skill.
Practice and money
A fair bit of it is natural talent. There's some home video of him on a little 50cc dirtbike at about 4 or 5 years old, just absolutely demolishing the other kids in the race. If I remember right he could ride a motorcycle before he could ride a regular pedal bike. Then add a lifetime of practice, sponsorships, and opportunity.

I saw this lethal machine in person at the 2022 NYC Auto Show Subaru exhibit! It really stood out to me compared to all of the other cars around at the event. Definitely one of my favorites, especially knowing that it’s a wagon with active aero flaps and crazy speed.
I wonder what hoonigan be on making these cars. 😂
What a sick looking beast. A screaming, popping and ripping brick with active aero on top of it. I want this thing in Forza! My favorite thing though is seeing the suspension, when it accelerates you really see the back drop and tge front raise and vice verse when breaking, and while cornering the whole car leans. Glued to the ground yet if you want to it has no problems drifting corners. A real toy, and a blast to drive I bet :D

The McMurphy fan car did a 39:08. A new record for the goodwood climb. Faster than the VW IDR last year. I agree this gets me way more exited also but the fan car was mighty impressive.

So cool, the details are incredible - the gold ano-look underneath all the aero bits, the black die-cut Subaru logo riveted to the wastegate exhaust under the hood, that huge roof tray spoiler, the roof rails, the massive body roll during tire warm-up showing that it could deal with all the crap roads... oh, man - oh, man - oh, man I want one!
That air friction brake is a sick flex 💪 for photos and wild sliding turns !

2:52 i dont understand the spoiler in the back. I mean does it something? Its just a flat piece. Not angle so no air break? Or am i wrong? I dont think this thing is functional at all. But why they do all the work and then install an not functional spoiler air brake? I mean they could give it an angle so it works fine.

if this car was a plane, it would be a P51 Mustang, old and obsolete but damn it is fast
I'd say it's more of an F-4 Phantom II, which simultaneously has the appearance of a flying brick and is unbelievably fast. If I had to go WWII era, I'd say P-47, AKA The Jug.
@@griffinfaulkner3514 P-47 was not so fast and had worst acceleration (with trippy bricky shape of course), it had only 3 main things: turbocharger for high-alt, good weapon-load, good survivability. P-51 is a better example in that case maybe, of course it had awful maneuverability but with a good mobility. But p-51 had nice aerodynamics. So I think in terms of WWII.. if this car was a plane it would be a Curtiss Wright CW-21 in dutch pilot's hands.
But F-4 is a nice example without any doubt
@@sometimesidreamaboutcheese The P-47 was actually startlingly fast for its size, particularly in a dive, with a good roll rate. So long as you kept its speed and energy up, it could boom and zoom with the best of them. Though if you want a plane that's truly physics-defying, you have to look at the P-61A/B Black Widow. At lower speeds, the combination of a massive wing and incredibly powerful engines gave it incredible responsiveness, far beyond what its size would suggest.
@@griffinfaulkner3514 Yes, it had nice diving speed but especially because of powerful engine and big main weakness: extremely large weight. It is just a physics. But because of this weakness it progressively loses energy into climbing and had poor climbing abilities for effective boom-zooming. It was meh-good for escort and ground-attacks. I can not agree that P-47 was best "boom-zoomer" of these planes. (Even FW190 with his radial brick-nose shape had better ability for energy saving.). And P51 had a lot of advantages against Thunderbolt.
Well yes, P61 had good combination of technologies, but if we will talk about two-engines sophisticated layouts then in terms of "parallel examples" for that car .. better example will be an Dornie Do-335.

It’s interesting that they did, considering they went the effort of having custom carbon fibre inner wheel guards.
I was lucky enough to see it in person and the roof rack is actually carbon fibre fin directing air to the radiator that is in the back 😁 I like how they kept it for the looks but at the same time made use of it

This is what we could see back then into Group S series , if FIA and their greedy moneylovers bosses did not banned Group B and it's legacy. We already had active suspension, all-wheel steering, online electronical adjustments and improvements, sophisticated drivetrains, semi-automatic gearboxes, ultimate hi-tech materials, etc etc - back then in late 80's.
But FIA ruined all motorsport future for decades.
P.s. I don't like Goodwood track, to be honest, too boring and too simple, almost any other european hillclimbs have better and more energetic layouts.
