My air beam tent sleeps 8, has a full standing height central area where people can get dressed, as well as two porches where shoes etc can be left. It cost us less than £1K. $300 per night in a good hotel and still have change after a two week break.! Get a shower and breakfast every morning and probably a pool. No campground fees and don't have to think about storing that big box. Don't get me started on Motorhomes!
All looked great until the €4k price tag. At €2.5k it competes with roof tents. €4k is valid, only if you need your roof for other cargo. Great idea, just saying they missed a trick with the pricing. No doubt it will sell, Thule products are superb, and always well made. As a matter of interest, where would you rather be if your car was stolen, asleep on the roof or asleep on the tow hitch?
Others will enter the market with competing and less expensive products. Thule is just a very expensive brand, though I'm stuck buying a Thule ebike rack because they are the only brand that has the features I want and need for our ebikes.
I really like this, it gets you up off the ground . Maybe a little expensive but A trailer with a tent 14k. And if you are in California speed limit is 55 mph with one of those. Not with this though. Prices are crazy 90k for a truck, just plain nuts. 50k and for an RV that’s just built to last two years. This is cheap compared to those options and you don’t have to buy insurance for it.
Great concept but as others have commented 4k is a massive issue. Won't be long before Chinese will have a sub 1k copy on the market i think. Better than a roof tent or for older or disabled people so mass appeal and also strays into teardrop caravan and trailer tents territory. Nice one Thule for the concept but your on anther planet price wise.
What happened to just camping in a tent? The Coleman instant tent is so easy to set up and store and is under $200. Same with all those expensive rooftop tents that tie you to the campsite once setup.
Because my wife is disabled. She has an aversion to things crawling on her, and her arms are amputated short enough that she often cannot brush off bugs and critters that do get on her without assistance. Something like this is as close as I will get to getting her to go camping. To me, at least it is not a hotel room.
I've been to campgrounds that have had gravel spread on the site or that have compacted, hard, and uneven ground from over-use. One time I spent 45 minutes covering the area I wanted to put my tent on with leaves so it would have enough cushion to protect the tent bottom (and yes, I use a ground cloth/tarp) as well as be comfortable. With so many places requiring reservations, you don't know that before reserving.

More comfortable and/or protective than regular ground tents. Same reason as solid wall rv vs tent. If you view it as buying a house not temporary shelter, prices seem cheap.
@hi9580 OK, it has a hard bottom and a frame. Couple pieces of plywood and a set of screw on legs would take care of that. Otherwise, it's another fabric tent. It would not pass in park areas where hard sided equipment is required for bear protection. I doubt this will hold up to UV rays like an RV either. It's a wear item.
The concept is great 👏🏻 but my question to Thule is, how do you get in or out when it’s pouring with rain, without getting the inside wet, as all the doors are unsheltered. The price is somewhat steep for what you get, but being able to unpack/pack it up quickly and carry two kayaks on the roof rack is very appealing 👍🏻
@@MWodenberg indeed, experience has led me to ask the question as I cannot see how you could open any of the doors in heavy rain and not get the inside of the tent wet. They forgot to add something, which most tents have 😉

Is it possible to set it up at a spot that the car cannot reach? It looks like you can detach and roll it to the spot, but then how do you get it on the rack?
When folded up to travel, the sides are open to the elements to get filthy and/or soaked. Set up in wet weather, it offers little escape from rain, and has zero protection at the opening from taking in rain. EUR4,000 will doom it to failure in the market.
Compelling! One major design flaw; an optional (zip in-zip out) vestibule so folks can stand up to change, stow light gear, enclose a portable toilet (not everybody can hold it all night). A vestibule or vestibules would make this much more usable and flexible.
interesting, but I dont think anyone needs a folding "tent bed". You can't go sleep with it in bad or hot weather. It's also a security risk when you're in the parking lot or in bear territory. Plus it's a Thule so you know its gonna cost an arm & a leg
Thank you for the great video. More information than many media outlets have shared. Brilliant solution to roof top tents… after the price comes down a bit.
4 Thousand euros! No way. Good luck though, and I look forward to seeing some companies taking this example and adapting it. The concept has potential but it is only for smooth roads and not camping in rough country areas as it won't be stable enough with just the connection in the middle, going through rough stuff that throws a car around a bit, like getting onto a beach, will produce side to side motion that will twist it off the mount. I would have liked a tent that has an inflatable frame that can plug into a power adapter from a car and auto-inflate or a more innovative aluminium frame that can extend a bit higher.

Great idea but seems way to expensive and not sure how long it would survive driving along corrugate dirt roads in Australia. Would like to see a few reviews first before robbing a bank so i was able to buy one. But one huge advantage Being behind the SUV it wouldn't impact fuel economy at all compared to a rooftop tent
This is a game changer… Thule has actually come up with something even stupider than a roof tent that somehow represents even worse value for money. Can’t wait for the bonnet tent…
For all you old people complaining in the comments about how people have gotten lazy by not using regular tents, vehicle tents are much more convenient for going on road trips as you don't have to worry about finding a field, forest or camping site to pitch and not to mention you have all that extra space for storage by having your vehicle. So thats an incredibly naive thing to say 😂

As a camper, I would hardly call that a tent. A covered camp bed maybe. If it's a tent, it is the equivalent of a fifty dollar, 2 person, pup tent. I suspect this one cost more than $50 bucks.

A tent for good weather! When it rains and the tent is wet, I pack many litres of water with it.
The inventor has apparently never been on the road with the tent for a long time.
Did he say 4,000 euros? Does that include the car?
Great idea but seems way to expensive and not sure how long it would survive driving along corrugate dirt roads in Australia. Would like to see a few reviews first before robbing a bank so i was able to buy one. But one huge advantage Being behind the SUV it wouldn't impact fuel economy at all compared to a rooftop tent
🤩👍German engineering at it's best yet once again.
Is this available in Canada
Where will the ebike go?
where can I order this , I would buy it for my travel ~
Seems more like an interesting engineering exercise than a viable camping option.
Is it anchored? What happens to it in strong winfd
the joy of camping has been diluted by all this unnecessary overpriced goods.
Where can I buy one ?
Damn, perfect for a night over on a snowboard trip!
What happen when you have to fold the rent under raining day
what about its hydraulic head?
do you supply in India ? How much cost in retail & in Bulk ?
This is a game changer… Thule has actually come up with something even stupider than a roof tent that somehow represents even worse value for money. Can’t wait for the bonnet tent…
i wonder what it would be like putting it away wet.otherwise it looks innovative and thule do some quality items
This concept should be explored with tail gates on pickup trucks. 🔥
All that weight is attached by a single mount onto a ball? Asking for trouble.
Could you imagine someone driving off with you in the tent? 😅
after you set it up it disconnects from the car.
Roof top tent for your hitch
great idea... love the concept...when is it available in the UK? which cars does it fit on? 👍🏾 it's mega pricy though!😓
Thule is noted for quality with extreme prices.
You can buy a 10x14 wall tent with a stove and two cots for $2200.
And what about un leveled ground?
Looks like each leg has an adjustment dial. Probably helps extend or retract legs to adapt to uneven terrain
Although a bit pricey I think its great..very smart and convenient way for a quick camp trip. Well done.
you've found a price?
@@josephpiccioni7963 4000 Euro. Swag is a lot cheaper.
$4K euros on launch. @@josephpiccioni7963
Vorteile gegenüber Dachzelt:
1. Man kann es auf dem Campingplatz stehen lasse (mit Diebstahlsicherung!), und das Auto nutzen
2. Man muss das schwere Dachzelt aufs Autodach wuchten
3. Man braucht keine Leiter mehr und kann auch nicht von der Leiter fallen
Nachteil:
Warum nicht gleich ein billigeres ganz normales Zelt (mit Feldbetten) für oben genannte Vorteile?
As a camper, I would hardly call that a tent. A covered camp bed maybe. If it's a tent, it is the equivalent of a fifty dollar, 2 person, pup tent. I suspect this one cost more than $50 bucks.
As long as you have a perfectly flat parking area it might be adequate. Trouble I'd, perfectly flat parking spaces are hard to find.
What a great product rep. At a trade show, people looking on in interest and he says i don't have time to show you how the legs fit in the closed position. what a joke.
Sad, many new cars allows only 50kg hitch weight - especially electric cars in Germany 😢
I know the bars look silver, but at that cost it ought to be real.
Não mostra a desmontagem da base da cama😢
Does anyone know if the Four legs are adjustable for uneven ground 🤔
Yes, the legs will be adjustable
@sm7tcd Thank you for this 👍
I have watched several videos featuring this product. I have looked at a number of Thule camping products. I generally like what Thule does with racks and mounts. I think they bought another company as a first step into tents. I guess they did not retain the best engineers or designers from that company. This and their other products range from just plain dumb ideas to good idea executed poorly. I live in North America so maybe we have different camping problems to solve but I just don’t get it.
Over engineered for sleeping on a tent with legs.
Not engineered- just overpriced
It's a really impressive piece from an engineering perspective
