Small kitchens never have enough counter space. Add a butcher block table - a small rolling square table (2'x2'? 30"x30"?) with a drawer and a shelf below. I think it will make work flow much easier.
Something I have to admit. I finally got it. I finally realized who you are as a couple. It’s clear that John is incredibly talented visualizing shapes, textures and colors but watching the two of you work was the first time I saw a modern day artist and his muse interacting. The colors he chooses are the bright colors of Tara. The variety of styles and textures are Tara’s innate personality manifested in how John translate these joyful and hopeful feelings into tangible creations. The end result are the two of you looking at what you created together, Sawyer and Crusoe. Well done. It also reflects the energy you’re reclaiming by banking video clips so you can take time off. One of the thousand doggie rescues was the one where he pulled Crusoe choking and sputtering out of the giant ditch. That rescue only happened in doggie mind. To you he was just playing with the boys in the puddle in that last clip. ❤️
Your little stone house is utterly adorable! So often people think about creating the biggest space their budget will allow, but I think that that thinking is backwards. We need to ask ourselves "How small can we live and still be comfortable?" At the same time your boys are growing, you'll all need more space eventually, so the big house will be a welcome addition when it's done. Then the little stone house can be used for guests, friends, visiting family, whatever. You are an inspiration to everyone who watches (and learns.) Thank you and Bless you all!

When they were small our boys used to sit with my late husband under the car port that had a corrugated tin roof and listen to the rain bouncing off it... there was a mad rush to get into position when we had hail stones. lovely memories ❤

What a wonderful home. You found elegant solutions to all the problems you encountered. The tile countertops are much more sensible than the wood, the under shelf lights are ingenious, maintaining the original wall tiles set the tone for the whole kitchen. Well done Newbys!

I like the term "Maker" because like myself and my husband (whose name you may recall is Jon LOL) we are DIYers but also I am an artist and designer and so we love every aspect of making things from house building and renovating, to furniture making, and decorating. I love all those little things that make this place say "This is John and Tara's." The tiles, the knobs, the eclectic mix of bits and bobs that represent your travels, your experiences, your memories, and provide little pops of JOY everywhere! You have inspired me with those little tiles all over the farm for sure. As an artist and illustrator, I love using various things all over the house - things I have made, things others have made, to create little moments of happiness. You have those in abundance.

Definitely the kitchen - the blue and white tiles are such a feature as is the stone wall. John has added so many beautiful touches everywhere, in such a clever way. The cabinetry is so complementary to the wall tiles yet a strong feature in itself. Love it all!

The counter edge tiles really pull the wall tile together. Well Done. I never realized HOW much lower the kitchen floor is now. The shadows from the hanging hall lamp are a delight (I'm partial having a shadow-casting lamp myself!). The outside robe banister is lovely too. I love color and y'all are a master at mixing it up!
It all looks wonderful and I can only imagine the feeling of being able to breath with the new living space as opposed to the one room living in the old house. I had a tiled kitchen worktop in my finca for 10 years, fabulous! My favourite parts are the little bits that make up your adventures and experiences in life such as the little tiles from Morocco and India and the bird handles. These are the things that hold your deepest memories of journeying far and wide, of experiencing new cultures and meeting people from all over the world, they will give you everlasting joy long after you have got used to the renovation of what is a beautiful family home.
My absolute favorite thing again is the tiles from your travels. It's such a small thing visually yet brings back memories of everywhere you have been❤❤❤. I’ve watched this little stone house built since John started. I loved the entire process and watching a craftsman at work. Tara the way you have encouraged John with such joy and appreciation is truly special. You both, I shouldn’t say you both as the boys were also and obie were a big help with their enthusiasm to help their dad and you in the garden. I love the kitchen and bathroom knowing the amount of work that was put into it. The different tiles placed on the work surface and the walls is very imaginative and really suits. The yellow would have clashed😃. Can’t wait to see the bio pool and looking forward to the big stone house and seeing all the creativity coming out from both of you. Thank you lots😘

My favorite is the bathroom. A modern & exotic mix, makes the bathroom unique. Next, the kitchen. The way all the appliances are included with this cozy farm kitchen decor makes the kitchen extra special. The living room is third only because it’s an easier room to incorporate. Nonetheless, it’s warm and cozy and comfortable. Last, but not least, is the magical way you transformed the hallway into a tiny library and artist expo. Overall, y’all are super creative and have created a beautiful home for you & the children… well done 👍🏽 😊
I love the smaller window in your living room. Every time you show it, it looks like a new landscape painting, but it is even better, it is your ever changing glimpse of nature through it! (The window at 24:13 in this video)
My favourite part of the house has to be the interactions between yourselves, the boys and those who come to help, especially, Mario, diogo, and the faithful Joao. As far as the building goes, It's so hard to say because wherever I look there is such creativity and artistic input. The kitchen is magnificent with all the tiles- I really like the edging tiles around the counters and sink, the little touches that make the kitchen so special. It's a place I would enjoy cooking in. I especially like the stair area, the wonderful bookcase, the light fixture and window make it very special. The bathroom, a complete work of art, and the extension, a place of family collectiveness. Would be easier to say what didn't I like......can't think of anything except only having one bedroom. However, it isn't a problem for you, and you have made the most of it. John how you can say you are just a DIY person is to understimate yourself. You are an artist in all true senses of the word, and Tara is so gifted, together you are a formidable talent. 🌹
I really love the way that John fit the wood/wine rack between the stone wall and oven. Pretty skilled. I think you need an outdoor shower with hot water for those muddy scuba divers.

I love blue and white together so your kitchen colors are a great pick. I especially like your counter tops and the little hand painted tiles around the edge. The pull out under the oven is a very practical and helpful addition. I like the addition of the mismatched door knobs/pulls and that they are all special to both of you as are the small tiles that are from different trips. The lights under the shelves and the fact that John was able to hide everything but the light is remarkable!! I noticed also that the rose bush is growing outside on the little porch that John installed so it will be so attractive next Spring. I think I could keep going on and on but really like the personal and meaningful touches that you and John have added to your little temporary home. It looks very comfortable, inviting and homey...a perfect place for everyone to enjoy and grow together while your other home is being built. Great work and great results!!

Hi both, I don’t know which part I liked best as I liked it all. But it’s all in your family’s taste which isn’t always everyone’s taste. John has certainly been on a diy first lately but then that’s what families have to do to keep themselves ahead in the game of life we are playing in. I remember the first years in our first home pine cladding the bathroom and the kitchen ceilings then making quarter circle shelving units for beside the doors where there wasn’t the room for a single cupboard so that corner got a shelf unit that I’d built everyone thought we’d bought them. Then I went on to building a complete extension from digging and pouring the foundations to wiring the extension up and plumbing it then also doing the roofing and plastering the full extension not having done any of it beforehand. 😊😊😊
There isn't one spot of your home I don't love but I'm obsessed with your kitchen. Very well done to John's hard and ingenious work and your decorating skills. Coming from a South African Wino, seeing as you only have space for 2 bottles of wine in the kitchen, maybe think of turning your "hole" under the stairs into wine storage when you clean it up. Perfect spot to store your wine. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I came across your podcast a year ago and have SOOO enjoyed every single step on your renovation/home building journey. I've shared the channel with other family members. We live in Vermont USA and you both embody the same 'get er done' attitude of so many Vermonters. As for my favorite part, while there are so many to mention, it is by far, the relationship between the two of you and your boys. Your willingness to share the good, bad, and challenging while not allowing the pitfalls, mistakes, & challenges to erode your support and faith in each other is an example of what emotional maturity looks like in relationships. I'm also amazed at your parenting skills, allowing/inviting those two boys to help and learn how to do things at such early ages. The colors he chooses are the bright colors of Tara. The variety of styles and textures are Tara’s innate personality manifested in how John translate these joyful and hopeful feelings into tangible creations. The end result are the two of you looking at what you created together, Sawyer and Crusoe. Well done. It also reflects the energy you’re reclaiming by banking video clips so you can take time off. One of the thousand doggie rescues was the one where he pulled Crusoe choking and sputtering out of the giant ditch. That rescue only happened in doggie mind. To you he was just playing with the boys in the puddle in that last clip. ❤️
Your little stone house is utterly adorable! So often people think about creating the biggest space their budget will allow, but I think that that thinking is backwards. We need to ask ourselves "How small can we live and still be comfortable?" At the same time your boys are growing, you'll all need more space eventually, so the big house will be a welcome addition when it's done. Then the little stone house can be used for guests, friends, visiting family, whatever. You are an inspiration to everyone who watches (and learns.) Thank you and Bless you all!

I like the term "Maker" because like myself and my husband (whose name you may recall is Jon LOL) we are DIYers but also I am an artist and designer and so we love every aspect of making things from house building and renovating, to furniture making, and decorating. I love all those little things that make this place say "This is John and Tara's." The tiles, the knobs, the eclectic mix of bits and bobs that represent your travels, your experiences, your memories, and provide little pops of JOY everywhere! You have inspired me with those little tiles all over the farm for sure. As an artist and illustrator, I love using various things all over the house - things I have made, things others have made, to create little moments of happiness. You have those in abundance.

The counter edge tiles really pull the wall tile together. Well Done. I never realized HOW much lower the kitchen floor is now. The shadows from the hanging hall lamp are a delight (I'm partial having a shadow-casting lamp myself!). The outside robe banister is lovely too. I love color and y'all are a master at mixing it up!

These are the things that hold your deepest memories of journeying far and wide, of experiencing new cultures and meeting people from all over the world, they will give you everlasting joy long after you have got used to the renovation of what is a beautiful family home.

I’ve watched this little stone house built since John started. I loved the entire process and watching a craftsman at work. Tara the way you have encouraged John with such joy and appreciation is truly special. You both, I shouldn’t say you both as the boys were also and obie were a big help with their enthusiasm to help their dad and you in the garden. I love the kitchen and bathroom knowing the amount of work that was put into it. The different tiles placed on the work surface and the walls is very imaginative and really suits. Next, the kitchen. The way all the appliances are included with this cozy farm kitchen decor makes the kitchen extra special.
The living room is third only because it’s an easier room to incorporate. Nonetheless, it’s warm and cozy and comfortable.
Last, but not least, is the magical way you transformed the hallway into a tiny library and artist expo.

My favourite part of the house has to be the interactions between yourselves, the boys and those who come to help, especially, Mario, diogo, and the faithful Joao. As far as the building goes, It's so hard to say because wherever I look there is such creativity and artistic input. The kitchen is magnificent with all the tiles- I really like the edging tiles around the counters and sink, the little touches that make the kitchen so special. It's a place I would enjoy cooking in. I especially like the stair area, the wonderful bookcase, the light fixture and window make it very special. The bathroom, a complete work of art, and the extension, a place of family collectiveness. Would be easier to say what didn't I like......can't think of anything except only having one bedroom. However, it isn't a problem for you, and you have made the most of it. John how you can say you are just a DIY person is to understimate yourself. You are an artist in all true senses of the word, and Tara is so gifted, together you are a formidable talent. 🌹

I love everything, but the sitting room and the outdoor space for good weather and morning coffee and afternoon wine are special.
I love blue and white together so your kitchen colors are a great pick. I especially like your counter tops and the little hand painted tiles around the edge. The pull out under the oven is a very practical and helpful addition. I like the addition of the mismatched door knobs/pulls and that they are all special to both of you as are the small tiles that are from different trips. The lights under the shelves and the fact that John was able to hide everything but the light is remarkable!! I noticed also that the rose bush is growing outside on the little porch that John installed so it will be so attractive next Spring. I think I could keep going on and on but really like the personal and meaningful touches that you and John have added to your little temporary home. It looks very comfortable, inviting and homey...a perfect place for everyone to enjoy and grow together while your other home is being built. Great work and great results!!

Hi both, I don’t know which part I liked best as I liked it all. But it’s all in your family’s taste which isn’t always everyone’s taste. John has certainly been on a diy first lately but then that’s what families have to do to keep themselves ahead in the game of life we are playing in. I remember the first years in our first home pine cladding the bathroom and the kitchen ceilings then making quarter circle shelving units for beside the doors where there wasn’t the room for a single cupboard so that corner got a shelf unit that I’d built everyone thought we’d bought them. Then I went on to building a complete extension from digging and pouring the foundations to wiring the extension up and plumbing it then also doing the roofing and plastering the full extension not having done any of it beforehand. 😊😊😊

There isn't one spot of your home I don't love but I'm obsessed with your kitchen. Very well done to John's hard and ingenious work and your decorating skills. Coming from a South African Wino, seeing as you only have space for 2 bottles of wine in the kitchen, maybe think of turning your "hole" under the stairs into wine storage when you clean it up. Perfect spot to store your wine. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You two are genius together! John's amazing carpentry skills and Tara's amazing decorating skills. I love the details, everywhere you turn there is something interesting and unique. I was in awe of the whole house tour and couldn't wait to see the next room. So, so, so beautiful! Also, you didn't just build a square structure, you put in so many interesting features like the wine rack and those little bags that hold your vegetables etc....If this is any indication of what your big house will be like well I can't wait to see this!
Not sure what my favorite part of the house I like most but the boys crawling in the water puddle at the end is the icing on top of the cake.
I came across your podcast a year ago and have SOOO enjoyed every single step on your renovation/home building journey. I've shared the channel with other family members. We live in Vermont USA and you both embody the same 'get er done' attitude of so many Vermonters. As for my favorite part, while there are so many to mention, it is by far, the relationship between the two of you and your boys. Your willingness to share the good, bad, and challenging while not allowing the pitfalls, mistakes, & challenges to erode your support and faith in each other is an example of what emotional maturity looks like in relationships. I'm also amazed at your parenting skills, allowing/inviting those two boys to help and learn how to do things at such early ages. Thank you.....I look forward to watching the construction of your final home.

What a beautiful tiny house. I love your eclectic style. My fave part is the stairs space… I’d toss down a throw rug and a big comfy cushion on the stairs and snuggle up to read a book from the shelf. ❤
