I get that people want to do it, but it's often done as part of a descalation/apology when you've done nothing wrong, there isn't a delay because the act is simply someone going about their business (in this situation learner drivers).
That's not a pop at you, it's just we act out this thanking/apology wave etc just simply for being there and doing some as part of our every day lives.

My partner is learning to drive and the poor driving that happens around us is tenfold compared to when I drive my own car. What people don't realise is L-plates don't always mean it's a learner driving, and people don't half get a shock when I pull onto a roundabout quicker than they were expecting (trying to pull out in front of me instead of giving way) or pull away from a junction quicker than them.

It’s a real shame Ashley this is an every day occurrence in a driving school car. Last week I took a lad to be honest had been taught by his Gran and she done a fantastic job. I only gave him a couple of two hour lessons to give him a few pointers and correct any little mistakes he had. The first week he drove like a dream but the second he got his test nerves as he was one week away from his test and I had a new car. We came onto a very busy road and this man may or may not have given some sort of clue that he was letting this lad out of a junction but he gave him absolutely no time before giving him a lot of abuse for not going. Then followed a lady who did exactly the same thing where the traffic was going absolutely nowhere, it was stop start traffic and she wouldn’t stop to give the lad a chance to get out. Lucky for the lad he was of strong character and with a bit of chat from me about how he was getting rid of his nerves before the test on this last Friday morning, he passed. As an instructor we’ve seen it done it and got the T-shirt and to be honest I don’t care when we get a bit of abuse but the students do and it hits them hard sometimes. All these people that are doing this are parents of learners, potential learners and past learners or maybe grandparents of the same. When I have talked to instructors over the years who have given up they always without one single exception say they gave up because of the traffic and the way they are treated.

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Did you mean gave up because of the people operating the machines on the road rather than just the sheer weight/density of traffic?
As a person who now only cycles as my mode of transport, I hear the same thing said regards people who used to cycle to work, now they drive because of the stress/fear of getting smashed into and the aggression from drivers.
The sad thing is I've seen an improvement in a decent % of those in the metal boxes around vulnerable road users, but there is a significant portion that are not just crap and selfish but dangerous AF, and these people are either unwilling to admit their errors and/or they can't see the problem in their actions so they never change, these are the ones that are more likely to be involved in a KSI.
It's just a shit show all round these days for everyone.

Older drivers keep barging in expecting everyone to give them way, when most of the time the obstruction is on their side or there is no where for a person to back up to. Had a very close call a month ago with a taxi driver, our wing mirrors were centimetres away from each other all because he refused to slow down. I dont allow myself to get bullied on the road, but sometimes it’s better to take the high road and let the idiots be. Not long ago a car cut me off, he was at a give way line to leave a car park and i was on the main road (30mph), he proceeded to barge through with no indication whatsoever and when i beeped at him he got out the car and started threatening me. I would remark that despite being correct at 2:43 it would have helped to mitigate the oncoming drivers impatience by directing your pupil to steer the vehicle into to gap on the left between the parked cars. This would have allowed the oncoming vehicle which became stuck adjacent to you to go around and clear the narrowing, even though they should have held back but did not.

It's not just learner drivers who experience this, but it also affects anyone driving a type of car that others automatically think you must be a slow.
After my wife passed her test, we bought an older 1.0 Micra. But she'll always complain about others cutting he up or doing similar actions (despite her actually being a good driver - had no issues allowing her to drive my Mondeo ST).
It was when I started using her car sometimes as a local run-around, I then found the same thing happening to me. Blatantly its the Micra giving out an impression that I'll be slow. Never experienced the same behaviour from others when in my larger/faster car.
Though, like the example of the situation with mini in this vid, I found it always funny when they get out caught out after they realise how quickly off the mark I always was! Same alos when waiting at two lane junctions, where they'd try to overtake on the left.

One thing that changed my view on driving/riding is an accident in which I was involved. I was going straight through a T-junction with car in front of me and one car from oncoming lane waiting to turn left (I'm from Croatia just to not be confused). Car in front of me went through the junction and I was following it when car from oncoming lane suddenly turned left and I had nowhere to go. I wasn't speeding (was doing 40-45km/h in a 50km/h zone) so there wasn't much damage on my car, but still from that moment on I became more observant and more patient. I was of a mindset that "I have the right of way and you have to wait". Now, if someone is waiting to turn or to merge in or to exit their parking space by reversing if there is no one behind (because you never know how patient the one behind is) I tend to slow down or stop if needed to let them do their thing. Also if I'm in a queue that is going slowly I tend to move to the right edge of my lane as much as I can so that bicycles, scooters, mopeds and motorcycles can get past. I won't gain or loose anything so why not make it simpler for them.

This is one thing where I CAN hold myself up as a shining example. (Sorry to blow own trumpet). Maybe it's having been an exclusive cyclist/pedestrian till my mid 30s, and learning to drive relatively late, but even now, learner drivers are one thing I will NOT get upset about. It calms me actually. If i am in a road ragey mood (it happens)... and I see a learner ahead, i keep distance. I want the instructor to be saying 'the guy behind is not pressuring us'... I remember the terror of stalling out at a set of lights and getting beeped at 0.025 seconds later all too clearly.
In no other way am I a good driver, i'm merely average, but on this, i am apparently ahead of the curve. The one bad example I do tend to do is flash lights at learners to say 'no, you first'. One, as you, Ashley are always saying, it's prone to misinterpretation and unnecessary; and two, the instructor is probably telling the student to let ME through (being in a white van lol)

  • @charlotteoleary196

I love being behind a learner driver because I hated my lessons and know how terrified students can be, so I take it slow and hold back. I think it's way better for them to be in front of me than a raging driver, often when they're trying to do a simple manoeuvre and getting it wrong I'm cheering encouragement from my car! I was at a 4 lane roundabout and the learner was in the wrong lane, signalling to go left, which was a bit difficult for me as I wanted to go slow in case they turned, but also knew I had to keep traffic flowing. I had to remind myself they had an instructor who wouldn't let them just pull out in front of me - although I did wonder why they didn't say just keep going ahead now you're in the wrong lane.

I'm afraid I find that a bit snobby. I recently returned my company car, a Ford mondeo titanium estate, in order to benefit from getting the car allowance instead. And as it was at the start of this whole pandemic thing and nobody was driving anywhere it made no sense to buy an expensive car to just sit on the driveway looking pretty whilst depreciating and costing me thousands. So I bought a 1yr old Skoda fabia for £8k to tie me over. It's great. I'd forgotten just how easy and worry free having a small, efficient and manoeuvrable cheap car can be, and with the amount I've been saving over the big company car it'll have paid for itself in 2years.

Before I was allowed out on my own, I had to learn, things can happen really quickly and take time to figure out and decide if / how to continue.
If they’re ahead of me, I’ll leave around a 3 second gap, rather than the 2, just so they don’t feel pressured by me to drive in a way they don’t yet have the skills for.
If they’re stopped at lights, I’ll leave extra room between us, so they don’t feel rushed, making a stall more likely, and I don’t move forwards until they’ve successfully got the vehicle going.

I have some thoughts for this. Mr Neal i do enjoy your videos and i'm new to watching the Channel but just a couple of points.
    1) People treating learner drivers like sub humans. I agree with pretty much most of what you are saying but i have to point out that there are some learner drivers who clearly do not have the required confidence to get out onto the main road. I understand its a learning curve and i can remember i was quite a confident/eager learner driver back in 2001 right after my 17th birthday when i had my lessons (so i may be biased) but clearly some learner drivers need more time on quieter roads/car parks before getting into the main roads. While i don't condone it i do see why some people get frustrated with learners.
    2) BMW drivers have a reputation for being elitists/comments made previously about people who drive cars with big engines. I myself Mr Neal like you drive a BMW, its an M340i with about 370 odd HP but if you where to see me driving on the road you would probably think its wasted on me as i drive like an old person. I dont rev my engine or anything like that and 95% of the time im an old fart behind the wheel unless im on a country road with national speed limit.
    3) Range Rover Drivers. Lets be honest here, most people who drive Range Rovers can't drive. They need a big car for their own protection probably from bullets as a consequence of being in the drug trade most likely. Driven by mainly meat heads or their birds who are usually about 20 years younger than them who can't drive anyway as they cant see through their massive designer sunglasses.
    Keep up the good videos!

It's really crazy on roundabouts as a learner too, I have had to brake about 5 times while on a roundabout because some drivers approach, see the L plate and don't give way. It's like they just assume every learner is crawling around a roundabout, they don't have the patience to wait an extra 10 seconds and they can move out in any gap. It's the main thing I notice when I am a passenger in a car compared to driving with L plates. It's an added stress because no matter how close I am to them I am always wary of traffic coming from the left when I am on a roundabout.

I had one yesterday. We were turning right from a main road to a minor and there was a car approaching which slowed down and waved us across despite it having priority. My learner is doing really well but is only about 8 hours in so is still taking a couple of seconds to move off. As we started moving, the car opposite must have got bored and started moving again as we didn’t move within 00000.5 of a second and I had to slam on.
If you are being nice enough to let a learner go, at least give them a few more seconds than normal to get going.

I'm currently on my pink badge. I was out with a pupil the other day we came to queue at a set of lights. As we were pulling away my pupil stalled, a bloke in a land rover decided he wanted to get in front and overtook us. Only to end up having stop at the lights.
My pupil said and I quote. "He's a bellend"!

@Amtsf You have been informed wrongly then, anything can be reported i have reported many tailgaters who have gotten points and fines, i have even reported those who drive like donkeys against learner driver cars too and they have also been fined and given warnings, so there is plenty that can be done dont ever think nothing can be done boss

@Amtsf neither but theres been a crackdown on antisocial and reckless driving country wide so send in your clips to the police with reg plate and the location and they will respond. I live in a ok area, but crime is bad here, they still make time for small things like this even if it takes month someone will look at it. I just wish they responded to actual reports as well involving attacks and stuff but they dont.

I'm a Bus Driver and I think that the majority of drivers out there are impatient. I've had some do risky manoeuvres from roundabouts just to 'beat the bus', people pulling out of junctions, not letting me pull out of Bus stops, tailgating is increasingly common - people have just lost the plot when it comes to driving. What a selfish attitude so many drivers have.

Bus & lorry drivers were the only nice drivers on the road when I was learning to drive. I try to be nice to everybody, but buses & HGVs get the VIP treatment :)

People like this are so annoying... Just wait! I failed my driving test the other day on the last turn of getting back into the test centre because the oncoming driver who has given me way decided to pull out in front of me as I was in line with his car, causing me to have to steer to the left to avoid him crashing into me. 0 minors and 1 major overall. Fuming. Regardless thanks for you videos Ashley, certainly has helped me to improve my driving loads!

I've said it before, the box isn't the issue. You were half right though, folk are impatient (to be polite about it).
I drove a Tesla Model X (P100D). I don't know if people were jealous, or trying to test the "auto pilot" but buy did they come out of the woodwork.
I ride a bike in/around Liverpool, and they're always not looking. If anything, it's worse now that people are allowed to travel again. You'd be surprised at the 3min mark on a motorbike - most will just assume you'll move over & continue like you're not there.

The box van in the last clip had to move when he did before the gap between your car and the parked van opposite was becoming too narrow for him to fit through. Even the red car had to negotiate it carefully and that was a lot more narrow than the box van.

I always give learners extra room and time, however, the only thing the frustrates me is some instructors not pushing students to put their foot down on dual carriageways or country roads. It is frankly dangerous for a car to be travelling at 30mph on dual carriageways or country roads as other road users aren't expecting that sort of speed.
But, I see countless instances where other drivers are completely inpatient with learners and frankly it is out of order and dangerous. Patience is a virtue

Daily accidents on the M6 somewhere between junction 5 and 9 ☑
    Impatient MGIF drivers ☑
Yep. We're getting closer to normal now. Shame. As a lorry driver, lockdown was a golden era to be a driver. Clear empty roads, no headache from car drivers with an itchy throttle foot. Ah yes, good times. Now its back to this crap. Is a couple of seconds really that much to ask for?

Delivery driver myself. Late last March to June was spooky quiet in my area on the roads. June/July, people would be blasting through crossroads expecting no-one to be there. August onwards people have forgotten how to drive, still not too busy though. Last few weeks, absolute carnage!

One thing I was shocked about while I was a learner was BMWs.. not for the reason you think. I heard the usual stereotypes of BMWs, but no other drivers helped me more on the road than BMW drivers. Anytime I’d be pulling off a Main Street into a side road they’d always flash to let me go. Every single time.
