    I wonder how many junctions are made hazardous by the presence of advertising signs or other clutter. It's brilliant that this was pointed out in the clip because it's far too common.

    Who doesn’t move over at motorway junctions to allow others to join? I am always looking for vehicles joining the motorway and anticipating moving out.

    • @Asto508
      @Asto508 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      schmoosmith well, it’s funnily considered a “mistake” here in Germany to leave your lane without overtaking someone, even when you anticipate a merging. It’s stupid but there are people who follow every stupid rule just because. Sometimes they are also just lazy assholes.

    • @David-sw2fn
      @David-sw2fn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yep this is just plain old courtesy and helps everyone out 👍. Unfortunately, I’ve had people in the middle lane accelerate like a bat out of hell to close a gap when I’ve indicated right in order to do this. This has forced me to go down to 50 in the left lane to let traffic merge safely. If you’re in the middle lane, do as one of the guys in the clips does and help out.

    • @whl9815
      @whl9815 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Trucks and other heavy cars which are not so agile and accelerate slowly are one thing, because you know you're gonna pass them anyway. But I really don't see a reason why I would move over for a passenger car joining the motorway. And actually it's illegal where I live.
      If you move over and they accelerate to same speed, then you're just driving next to each other and blocking the whole road, and at this point it becomes your responsibility to either accelerate or slow down to move back to the other lane. I've seen many cars who move over when I join the motorway actually never even reach me because I accelerate to target speed rapidly. And then it was just an unnecessary lane change.
      Just drive at a steady speed and keep the distance to the car in front of you and let the merger do job.

    • @whl9815
      @whl9815 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@David-sw2fn The best way to let the traffic merge safely is to drive at a constant speed and keep some distance to the car in front of you. By moving over in front of someone else you're forcing them to slow down. I don't know if moving over is what you're supposed to do in your country, but generally speaking being you shouldn't improvise in traffic, but drive according to rules. Traffic should be predictable, and it isn't if you give up your right of way for being courteus.
      The worst thing is when someone on the motorway starts to slow down to help you merge, while you (as the merger) are trying to adjust your speed to merge behind them. And the biggest mistake you can do when merging is not accelerating in the merging lane. You can fit in a 10m gap if you're driving as fast as the cars on the motorway, but even a 100m gap isn't enough if you drive too slow.

    • @David-sw2fn
      @David-sw2fn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      whl he best thing for mergers is to give them the lane wherever possible. People have widely differing perception and anticipation abilities and it’s not always easy merging. Often several vehicles can be stuck in the acceleration lane behind someone trying to join the motorway at 40mph for example. As you point out, this causes huge problems and a lot of space in that lane will help them to sort it out.
      If I can’t move away from the left lane, I can gently adjust my speed as needed to avoid the mergers. I have a much better perception of the situation than the merger (clearer view, used to the speed already etc). They’re an obvious hazard to me so I want to stay away.
      I would agree that what we don’t want is a sudden change of speed. That’s going to mess up everyone’s plans. In the example above, it was the sudden change in the middle lane vehicle’s speed that caused me problems.

      I used to see the same car reversing onto a national speed limit road day after day on my way to work. A few times they came close to causing an accident. They even had enough room in the lay by in front of their property to turn around but always insisted on backing straight out across the road.

    • @PedroConejo1939
      @PedroConejo1939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Where I used to live, I used to reverse into my driveway but it caused an awful lot of aggro from drivers who didn't think I should stop there. It was a busy road and evidently, driven by a lot of angry people. I would often have to wait an age - stopped where it was disrupting the traffic flow - and very rarely did anyone have the foresight to stop and leave me enough room to back in, out of everyone's way. It didn't stop me doing it but I wouldn't say it was any less dangerous.

    I would argue that it is up to the Vauxhall to determine if it safe, not everyone else.
    Of course, if you can mitigate a situation go for it. But changing lane to assist a merging vehicle, only for that vehicle to pull out into the path of another vehicle...well...that's on the merging car.
    You drive to your observations, not other people's. You can't guarantee that they have seen something you haven't and vice-versa.

    5:50 The slip road entrance is used on test routes in Oxford and what you can’t see too well from the camera view is it’s a very sharp 150° corner that leads onto a very short sliproad to join the carriageway. very often if you don’t do what the cammer did you have stop on the slip road which then causes major problems joining as traffic can be doing up to 70mph So well done to the cammer for making everyone’s life easier

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is well made. There are lots of top-end A roads (e.g. the A34, A417/419 etc), which are essentially like motorways, but have sharp curves into the slip lane which can be awkward for anything attempting to merge on, especially when it’s a fairly steep gradient as well. It’s often wise to move over and make it as easy as possible for whatever.

    I like this video. I have been watching quite a number of dash cam videos lately and the main problem with watching so many is it makes you lose faith in people and believe that everyone is an idiot and you can't trust anyone. I'm actually getting a bit jaded from watching too many I think and seeing these careless road users. So it's really nice to get a balanced perspective and see that not everyone is an idiot when they get behind the wheel of their vehicle and there are still some decent people out there. Good job.

      Strangely most crashes are rear end into stationary vehicle. Drivers have to accept blame if you hit a stopped vehicle.
      Slowing and stopping requires consideration for someone who may be too close behind.
      I thought the car that went closer to the ambulance didn't seem to consider what couldn't be visible in front of the car that has stopped.
      Wouldn't you wonder if there was a reason? I missed a scared squirrel at 40 mph the other day. Afterwards I realised the damage it could do to a car. At the time it was just an unpredictable object to avoid. I would be more inclined to slow down faster in future, as long as no one would run in the back of me.

    If horses are so easily spooked why even have them on the road in the first place? They're scared of their own shadow and they're not exactly low emission vehicles if you catch my drift.

    Not sure why you're giving any "credit" to that lorry in clip one (1.29) - imho that is quite a dangerous move.
    I would not be best pleased if while waiting for an opportunity to overtake a cyclist in a narrow lane and when that opportunity arrives - some impatient lorry behind pulls out and cuts me off.

    Consideration around slip roads is always appreciated. There's one near me that's a steep climb around a blind corner with no more than a couple of cars length of slip road at the top. It's impossible to get up to speed and you often have to rely on people moving over.

    When i did my test/instruction in 1968, if i wanted to turn right at a cross road, but a car opposite coming towards me wanted to turn to his right, we met in the middle of the junction and went around each other to continue on our direction of travel, now this does not happen, we do not go around each other, why not?

      @shawnrahoon6789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on the road layout. Junctions are not all the same. If the vehicle opposite you is a high roof it may be better to go around each other. If it's a small junction it may be better it go in front.

    I personally think the way the horse rider and the motorcyclist handled the situation at 3:11 is probably the best way to deal with horse riders because motorbikes are loud even low RPM so even at slow speeds they are very loud so what the best thing to do is for them to both stop as the horse is stationary the riser has more control over their horse , as the horse riders were going single file this allowed the motorbike to give as big as space as possible. Ideally this is the best way to deal with situations like these I personally think that horse riders riding two abreast is dangerous because horses can easily get spooked by engines and this pushes road users to stay back and take dangerous steps to overtake as most horse riders ride on B roads it’s hard to give the maximum clearance so if they did ride single file it is easier to give them maximum clearance necessary to overtake.

      Remember it’s not just the sound; horses have ultra wide viewing angles - as much as 350°, with their eyes on the side of their heads. They are there to detect predators etc from behind, which we can be unless they’re trained, or if they wear ‘blinds’ `(as some do, for towing some drays etc).

    Every single clip in this compilation displays the same thing. A driver (or rider) who thinks about other roads users, instead of just thinking about himself.
    It's as simple as this : some people generally are selfish, and don't give two fucks about anyone else in life, and that includes the time spent behind the wheel of their cars.
    Some people are considerate and think about their actions and how it might affect other people, and do so generally in life, which translates to being good drivers too, thankfully.
    Another great video, and you have a new subscriber.

    Ashley, well done to the main cammer on this clip. That is how I always have driven since passing my test in 1967!! Never had an accident!
    The only thing I do differently is when on dual carriageways and approaching an entry slip road.
    I always hang back if there is a vehicle on the inside lane (especially a lorry) for if a car enters at speed it may well cause the inside vehicle to veer out. If you are alongside it then you can either end up running into the lorry, or having to swing into the barrier.
    I sit back, thus allowing me to see what drivers on the slip road are doing, and this also gives the other driver room to avoid an accident.

    4:42 It is interesting that the decision to stop really cost the cammer no time because he would have had to wait at the lights anyway.
    With regard to the penultimate clip, the car in lane one (in front of the cammer) had its lights on so I do not think that there was any causal link between the cammer's action and the fault of the emerging driver.
    With regard to reversing into or out of a drive. If you reverse out, you are further away from the road as you reverse out, and need to swivel your head far more to change your view from one side to the other - you cannot just glance from side to side. In addition, assuming the traffic approaching will generally be on your side of your car (assuming you car is right hand drive and you are somewhere that has a "drive on the left" convention) - so it that, too, will make it far easier to see.
    The other advantage of reversing out is that if something in the road you are trying to get into does hit your car it will be your engine in the firing line rather than your children (or your fuel tank!).

    Crikey. Back in my country of origin, I've done illegal road racing and I've done legal road racing. I've taken rally driving and drifting courses, I've driven on race tracks, rally stages and public roads for 14 years and, at least, 200.000 miles, I've attained national level racing licenses and driven organ/blood transport for local hospitals.
    I'm an absolute maniac of a petrolhead and all I've got to say is: when driving on public roads, Jon is driving skills goals.
    ALWAYS respect the fact that your car is a weapon if misused. At 30mph, a modern 1500kg hatchback has 15x the kinetic energy of a bullet from a high-powered rifle.
    ALWAYS respect the fact that all other road users out there are humans too (well some are horses, cats, dogs etc. but you get it).

    I’m all for considerate driving... with plenty of thank you’s to those that deserve it. But! Horse riders are a real bunch of stupid c##ts. Riding a horse on a fast busy road is just moronic and selfish. Yes I’m fully aware that it’s legal to ride horses on a road.. but it’s also legal to stick your head in a wasps nest. Use a a bit common sense when choosing what legal things you do. The clip @3:00 is the definition of stupidity with a complete lack of common sense. I was on a national speed limited road (60mph) not too many weeks ago... it’s a perfect road, smooth tarmac, lovely sweeping corners with the occasional sharper corner here and there but not crazy sharp.... we all know these roads. Whilst going around one of these sharper corners at a perfectly plausible speed... suddenly 2 horse riders riding next to each other quickly appear in front of me, with oncoming traffic also being an issue. Having to anchor up is a fucking understatement! Now I’m sure I’ll get a bunch of people saying you should have been going slower.. or always except the unexpected. Please understand the stupidity of the riders before trying to blame a car driver for driving perfectly normally on a ROAD. I’ve been driving this road for 11 years now sometimes multiple trips up and down the road in a day... and I’ve never encountered anything like this or on other such roads in fact. After the anchoring up had been done and the horses regained a calm state I passed the thick as pig shit riders and continued on down the road. I them proceeded to stop In a sensible pull in place and waited for said horse riders to have a little chat about the whole situation. I said whilst quite enraged still due to the fucking stupidity of some people.. what in the ever loving fuck are you doing riding two a breast on a corner whilst on a fast busy stretch of road? One response I got was it’s a public road and I’m allowed to ride on it. The other response was you shouldn’t of been going so fast. ( for the stretch of road in question.. it was not fast not even close to fast). Now there was a lot I could of said to defend myself but with 2 responses that fuck witted I chose to just say... best of luck with meeting a fully loaded artic on those bents next time... because he won’t be able to stop and will teach you a lesson about not riding a horse is such a stupid location. Please don’t reproduce have a nice day.
    I hate that we the drivers are always the point of blame with situations like these! It’s always us that get told to expect the unexpected. I say what about the riders etc.. surely doesn’t this same saying apply to what they choose to do. If I’ve got to expect that there is a pathetic horse rider around every damn corner and slow down to a crawl... surely they should be thought to think, what happens if there might be an unexpected unfamiliar to the area road user that doesn’t know that moronic horse riders enjoy dicing with death on the corner, therefore I should consider staying off of this road.

    5.03, it' might be ok at times letting people take the piss by not conforming to merging politeness, but if good natured drivers keep letting piss takers get away with it the piss takers will never learn anything and will just keep doing it.
    It's a bit like letting somebody push in front of you in a shopping queue, how many times do you let it go before you say something, while they keep thinking your politeness is weakness.
    You need a few more skip lorries on the road, I have found they seem to get the message across pretty quick to the non conforming mergers.

    At 7.40 plus we are in a car on a dual carriageway and there is a 50 mph limit and as we know drivers usually drive on or close to any limit so I presume that both drivers, his car and the car in front are doing about that 50 mph. limit. However if we look closely at the road surface it seems to be wet, there are some puddles lining the gutter that would indicate that previously it had been raining. So under those circumstances what would the following on or safe stopping distance be on a dry road at 50 mph. The H.C. recommends it to be 175 ft in the dry but to double that on a wet road to 350f. That said, what distance is the driver giving to that car in front, only some 90 ft at the most. I know that he is considered to be a safe drive but in this case he should not have been that close to the car in front.

    Interesting the pulling up on the right is now part of the UK test. Pulling up on the right on a two way road is illegal in Australia. Parking against the flow of traffic is also illegal. I had to learn that pretty quickly when I moved here 10 years ago from the UK.

    I also agree with what you mentioned previously about parking on the right side of the road instead of the left. When it's time to pull out again it is a nightmare, your view is poor and in some cases you are poking out slowly hoping and praying that nobody oncoming bumps into your car! Made this mistake when visiting an uncle some years ago. I'd rather take a longer route or turn into a side road then come back and then park on the right side of the road. Less stress all round.

    That car pulling out of the service station reminds me of something that happened to me recently going up to Suffolk. I believe when you are on a slip road going onto a motorway you are supposed to get your speed up. Is it the same exiting a service station slip road to join a motorway, because the slip roads are so short. I was coming to the end of the slip road and there was a lot of traffic. luckily a car signalled and went to the middle lane but it was tight. or on short slip roads from service stations to the motorway do you just wait for a break in the traffic then just go for it?

    About stopping for an oncoming cyclist whilst we as drivers have now to bend over backwards to keep them safe whilst overtaking and with the giving of a yard and a half or same in metres. On the other hand just how many cyclists return that safety message when they are cycling relatively fast whilst passing either parked cars or moving ones in the same direction. They give nothing at all. Good safe world isn't it.

    Some years back I was driving down a country road and in front of me was a horse. Wasn't quite sure how to approach the situation but i got a quick lesson on what not to do as a range rover came roaring the other way. Horse reared and the ride somehow managed to keep her steed under control. I took the lesson, slowed right down, pulled as far to the side as I could and crept passed when she completely in control of the horse and back under way.
    Glad the prick in the range rover got it wrong first so I didn't have to.

    At 8.50 apparently the driver of the car approaching is asking whether he contributed to a potential collision as the other car drove out of the petrol station. I would say that if he had put his indicator on to indicate to others that he was pulling out and into the outside lane then its possible that he may have contributed to that other car pulling out of the station.
    I say this because if he did indicate and at that point at 8.50 the driver of the car exiting from the petrol station and looking to his right would have seen a car approaching, that would have been the car in front but they could possibly also have only seen indicators flashing from the video car and which was now actually partly hidden behind but it may have appeared to be the same car one and flashing to move over to allow him to exit safely. Look at it at that time and presume that you are the driver of that car exiting the station and presume that the indicators were on. then its possible.
    If instead of tailgating, of being only some 90 to 100 ft behind the car in front then [ the road speed limit now being 60 mph ] if he had been about 350ft behind it then this would not have happened at all. The driver exiting the petrol station would have clearly seen a red car approaching at speed with no indicators on and he would have slowed to afford him precedence. before actually pulling out.

    The clip with the motorcyclist and the horses places the motorcycle rider in a dangerous situation, the sun is in his eyes and that of other drivers. I ride a motorcycle and there's no way I would have come to a complete halt like that, asking for a following vehicle to tail end you with the compromised forward visibility. He had lots of time to overtake without coming to a halt, safely and at a low speed.

    Excellent content..... this must rate in the Top 3 (at worst) of the best I've seen in one upload. Absolutely right for you to make a point of crediting Jon C; in particular the petrol station clip where he questioned himself.
    You mentioned in a recent email that 5% of the road users create 95% of the problems - probably not far from the truth. The level of road use here puts the cammers in the top 5% that help solve or reduce the risk 95% of the time, or thereabouts.
    Much can and should be learned in todays content. Top marks there!!

    I thought that reversing out into a main road was either not advisable, or illegal. To have twelve feet of an estate car backing into a main road, before the driver can see if the road is clear, cannot be a good idea. I have always backed in!! 🤔
