- How people treat Driving School Vehicles is getting worse all the time. This is a form of discrimination and laws need to be made to stop it happening. This time someone purposefully opens the door on his car to stop us reversing into a Bay.

Just being awkward and no need for it. Funny Story, I noticed a learner in my local supermarket carpark doing maneuvers similar to this just after I had parked and actually asked the instructor if I was going to be in the way, This was about 2 months ago. The instructor thanked me and said that no, I would be fine. The pupil also thanked me and it turns out that she works at the same supermarket. I was actually served by her the other day and she actually remembered me and told me (very excitedly) that she had just passed her test :)

Oi steady!!! I owned one of the real Fiat 500cc cars in the car 70's & so many of the ladies loved the car. and I got some of that extra love coming my way. I wasn't complaining & made sure I gave her a nice wash and wax as a thank you. Er the Fiat that is.

The more a car deviates from a standard car, the more fragile the ego then? A huge Dodge Ram is compensating for something and a bloke in a fiat 500 feels the need to be an arsehole because his car isnt very “respectable”

It's illegal to leave a learner inside a car with a running engine at any time they are at the controls. It's also not a good idea for the learner to get out mid lesson to close a door.

I've only recently got my licence and this is a perfect example of how people treat learner and new drivers. It is genuinely disgusting, don't think there's any excuse for people feel the need to try be nasty to people who are trying to learn a key life skill.

At first it wasn't deliberate. He opened his door to throw his nice healthy fast food boxes away, then he saw there was a learner there and decided he was gonna leave his door open. Fine display of humanity there
It looks like the bird on the pole (on your front dash view, after your learner parked) was hoping to witness some car park rage, or a fight. At 6:05ish after they left in the fiat, it looks like the bird decided to relax lol.

This is why there should be mandatory driving tests every 5 years or so. Many of these arrogant tossers wouldn't pass their test if they took it again 5 years later. Put them back in the learner's seat, that'll change attitudes to learners no doubt. I don't understand why people's driving skills aren't inspected. A restaurant isn't inspected for health and safety only once so why are drivers different?

I don't know about this. The learner was parked on the road so long, it didn't seem that he was parking. Then when he did, he could have taken any space, one closer and without risking scraping the car that guy was in. It doesn't seem obvious what the learner is doing at all, unless you are in that seat, or are told that the other guy is a twat in the title of a video before watching. He seems fine when he's told what's happening, so why publicly ridicule him? People are generally nice when you're face to face with them. Unlike TH-cam uploaders and commentors.

I completely agree that people behave aggressively or obstructively towards learner drivers but it's not just learner drivers. Motorcyclists take a lot of rubbish from car drivers and cyclists generally. Combine L plates and motorcycles and its learner motorcyclists who get treated the worst. I acknowledge there are people who ride badly on L plates but it causes the genuine learners to be treated quite badly. Not trying to say L drivers aren't treated badly but there are a lot of smaller groups of road users who are discriminated/affected by other drivers as well.

If I were in your shoes I'd tell my pupil that they are in the drivers seat and the poser over there is not. It does seem like this type of passenger think that if they are good at Xbox driving, they will be good at the real thing. I'd die laughing at seeing that poser go pale while hitting a big puddle on a dark country road and then again when he complains that the steering isn't "realistic".

It's so annoying they make up the stupid rules the dealership wouldn't treat drivers like that such as students can't use reverse cameras or required to look over shoulder. discrimination on disability or special needs . That's a rule in the school. Also they have been declining refunds when I took more than two tests or 5 they weren't admitting it was false accusations they want too much $

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why couldn't the Learner park next to the white car rather than the black Fiat? I mean, there were two open parking spaces, so...eh. I mean, if the passenger wants to be a jerk, oh well, but there was another open spot. Would you really want to be parking next to a jerk like that anyway?
the whole manoeuvre had been set up to turn into that space next to the fiat and the guy didn't start acting like a twat until the kid had already started turning in. to reset would have been such a faff, especially because the driver seems pretty new to reverse bay parking
To be fair there seemed to be plenty of other free spaces. Just so happened that guy wanted to go out. No excuse for him to be like that as he wouldn't if it wasn't a learner I'm sure..

Why didn't you just reverse into the bay but one? You can see at 0:39 that Fiat 500's window is open, so there are people in there. I know from personal experience that in a car park and people are reversing next to me, I'm watching them to make sure they don't hit me.
Why not reverse next to the Fiesta where you know nobody is in the vehicle, saving all this trouble.

Some people would just do that on purpose regardless of the car. You cannot attribute that solely to being a school vehicle. Improper use of the horn? I would have just used any one of the other available spaces and accepted that some people are utter morons.

Bet he'd do that to an ambulance too. if the paramedics have their uniform on then they're on call and have to be ready at a moments notice. Until then they can go to get their lunch ect from the shops or the hospital (if they didn't bring their own of course).
Someone did the exact same thing to me when I had a p plate. I thought I'd do a reverse bay park. At first I thought nothing of it and just wait for the women. But then she kept looking and standing in the space I was trying to reverse into. Some people are so weird and childish.
To be fair, women cannot arrive in a space and just get out. Even before mobile phones, they'd spend a good 5 minutes going through their handbags. If you are in a supermarket car park and you see a woman return to her car, just move on. She'll be phoning somebody about nothing. Finally, and this is a true mystery, if you give a lift to a 6 foot , 20 stone pal, he jumps in and the car doesn't move. A 12 stone woman climbs aboard and the whole fu***ng car sinks on its springs !
I think this shows how unkind people can be to others for no reason. Plain selfish. Thankfully there are a lot of normal kind people too to balance it out. This guy was being deliberately awkward and probably acts like that all the time? Child like.

He opened his door exactly at the point where you had clearly started to turn in and then he started doing this act of suddenly having to clean out his car and even dropping rubbish on the way to the bin in front of the car. Definitely done on purpose. I remember when I was learning, we were once asked not to do a reverse park around someone's car; he said this was not a driving school and was overall very snobby about it.
I want to say I'm quite shocked by this clip. Unfortunately this is just the state of our roads these days. All common courtesy and basic manners have disappeared and been replaced by passive aggressive, childish behaviour. You handled it well though.

If he'd been teaching someone to park he would stamp his feet and call you inconsiderate (and probably threaten to drop you because he's not in liveried vehicle) but it's OK for him to inconvenience others..... just like Jess Philips and similar politicians.

I retired from driving tuition 8 years ago . various reasons , but this kind of thing was one of them . I once had a guy threaten to call the police because I was parallel parking around his car . I said carry on . he just grumbled and walked back in his house . people forget that everyone has to learn .

Your car is a BMW and that could have factored into it as well? I read an article of a guy who had been driving VW's for 20 years, and then as soon as he switched to BMW, he got LOADS more abuse from other drivers.
@Redblade I disagree with that statement. I often compare BMW's and Audi's to Volkswagen. They're all solidly built examples of German engineering, but the former two seem to target the kind of people who like sporty and fancy cars, which isn't really for me, that's why I like Volkswagen and own one.
Plus I like to avoid as much aggro as possible, and that includes abuse from other drivers who have it in their head that all BMW and Audi drivers are twats.
Funny you say that. I drive an Astra however spent 4 days in an E-Class hire car. I found very quickly hardly anybody thanked me(for example giving way at a parked car), nobody let me out of junctions. I really noticed a difference in other drivers and as much as I loved the Merc, I don't think I'd want to own one for this reason.
I genuinely find myself that people who drive aggressively and don't indicate are those in cheap crossovers, the worst for me is the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and the Nissan Qashqai, I'm sure they never indicate but people aren't bothered because they're not BMWs.

This guy was the passenger. If you had slowly continued backwards and pushed his door beyond its normal position twisting the door post I do not think the driver would have been happy with his mate. A simple claim and you say I thought he shut it and could cite Brake and Pedal Cycle regulations. Alternatively a less aggressive move, you could reverse back stop inches short of the door so he cannot close it or reverse and get out of the parking bay. Then the pupil walks off to find a toilet and you say he's taken the key but will be back in a bit.
I love the second option most. Fight passive aggressive with passive aggressive.

Ok I’m not gonna defend your pupil for swearing but honestly, I’d be annoyed too if someone was deliberately disrupting a manoeuvre I was doing.
Ashley, I agree with the lad in the previous comment you are always moaning. I am an instructor the same as you and you have probably guessed from my comments in previous emails. I’m always moaning too day in day out as you get people beeping the horn for no reason cut you up on roundabouts and I could go on. I always say to the pupils, all these people doing this are parents of someone who is learning, have learnt or going to learn to drive. They would hate it if someone done it to their own precious children. About three years ago we were doing something similar to what you were doing in a quiet unused area of a carpark and a man in a big jag drove in and block three bays behind us. He got out and had a go at me and said we should be in the car park we should be out on the open road out of the way of everybody. Needless to say I was very polite and informed him that the test had parking in it today. I asked him if he wanted an inexperienced drivers coming in to a carpark not having a clue what to do and crashing into his jag. After we calmed down he informed me that he was an ex instructor from the army. Needless to say he went off into the shop and left his car parked across the mouth of three car park spaces. I have been an instructor of a 38 years and I cannot wait to retire. It’s a love hate job, I love teaching people to drive but I hate being out on the road with all the other ignorant people that use it.Over all those years driving instructors that have given up when asked have said ‘ I cannot stand the bloody traffic any more’.

It's the L plates, I have to have them on my bike and constantly come across dickheads who drive up my arse or overtake me close to a give way or traffic light. Once my front wheel ended up touching this dickheads back bumper after he overtook me and slammed on the breaks for the red light. It was a straight road so he could see the light was red before overtaking me.
He then got out of his car swearing and shouting and wanting insurance details, there was no actual damage to his car, not even a scratch so I took out my large bike chain and asked him if he wanted me to leave my details on his front window or his side windows. He declined and drove off at speed.
That's so totally hilarious about asking him if he wants your details on his front or side windows! That was pure gold and gave me a well needed chuckle. Sorry you had to deal with such brainless driving and glad to hear you are ok. Now where would you like me to leave my details? :)

I don't treat learners any differently to any other driver, except maybe to give them the benefit of the doubt if they're a little over-cautious. I know I was when I first started. (Long time ago, now!)

To be fair one of my pet peeves of car parks is people parking next to me when there's loads of other spaces, mainly because it always ends up being idiots with huge SUVs parking 2 inches away from my car and putting dings in the doors.

What an absolute pleb totally didn’t need to leave the door open.
I would like to think he was just ignorant, or that he is not very bright, rather than a vindictive-not-very-bright-human purposefully making it hard for a learner. Although, I have had tons of people be genuinely horrible to me during my lessons, as well as people thinking they’re being helpful - for example, a guy in a red car on a mini-roundabout, that I was supposed to give way to, wouldn’t go and kept flashing his lights, but a bus was waiting for me to go so I flapped and stalled it, then narrowly missed red waiting car. I can’t steer well at all yet, this was my 6th lesson. He thought he was being helpful but in fact made it so much harder for me, and gave me heartburn. So I prefer to think everyone is just ignorant rather than guilty, but let’s face it, a lot of people are guilty. He was 100% being awkward he dropepd the cup on purpose and then spent several fake attempts trying to pick it up in the hope you would reverse and go elsewhere.
I have no doubt that he knew you were reversing in to that parking space, & was being deliberately awkward.
I hate to say it but when I watch your videos I can see the difference in the people in general. I’m sure there are lots of nice people in Merseyside but there are an above average amount of horrible people and it shows in all of these videos.
I've lived here all my life and overall, people are friendly but you get a lot of piss takers like this and nosy people too!
Yes the Fiat passenger was a being a pillock but as it was obvious he was going to block your entry into the bay next to him it would have been better to instruct your pupil to actually realign the car and park.in the bay next to the it instead. Afterwards move to another part of the car park and find another parked vehicle where you could do nearside reverse to adjacent vehicle.
Such a big man in a fiat 500, bless him. That said, there's an empty bay with no door open next to the one you attempted, just drive forward and re-position for that bay..it's really not hard.
