This series is one of my favorites you've done. Being able to see what plants actually look like in a landscape is very helpful. I hope you go back and do another detailed set of videos like these maybe 2 or 3 years from now to show what the plants look like with a few years of growth on them.
Jim, I totally agree that each garden has a unique personality that reflects the preferences and style of the gardener or garden designer who created it. For me, that's what makes touring other's gardens so fun and interesting. I love seeing the wide diversity of plants that can be grown in different zones. ~Margie
I adore these plant by plant videos. There's always something exciting to see. August in the south is when the toughest of things go nuts & the delicates swoon. Native plants in N. Georgia are showing signs of fall, hummingbirds are busy. Watching the birds & pollinators gives me such joy, I'm glad more folks are enjoying it too. Thanks for being a part of that Jim, those of us without tons of space or resources can still make happy places we're proud of! Edit: my last violas have finally died but the snaps in part shade are still blooming.
Purchased a Florida Sunshine from a local big box store that had them on clearance. They are gorgeous and really do brighten up a shady spot in the garden.
I've learned so much from your videos. As a new home owner I have been overwhelmed. I had alot of overgrown shrubs that I have had removed and now I have a clean slate. I'm in Greenville about an hour east of you in zone 8a and have nothing but wet clay so I've not planted much but left everything in containers until the fall when I can work on amending this soil .
I like the single plant design. I love the variation. I'm not a fan of swaths of the same plant. I think that's boring but that's just me. When you do single plant plantings, there's always a little hidden gem when you look from a different angle. With swaths of the same plant, there's no wondering of what's around the corner. Thank you for the tour!
Thank you so much for the plant education. Have learned a lot just from viewing your channel. The information has been priceless. Thank you again and again. Beautiful garden.
Jim, thanks for the tour! Your confusion about the non-blooming cosmos is fascinating, haha! I had the same experience last year - some cosmos bloomed, and some looked like green giants. I was about to pull them, but was intrigued and left them alone. It turns out that they DO bloom, they just seem to be very late bloomers. All of the green giants turned out to be white blooming cosmos. Hope this helps!
My cosmos, same thing, no blooms. Yanked it out. I really enjoy your videos, being able to see all the varieties of plants you've put in. Knowing this type of gardening can look so lovely, so much enjoyment it gives is really appreciated. Absolutely gorgeous in its form.
Beautiful and Successful gardens! So amazing how much you have done in the amount of time since you began on this property. We MUST get you a gardening assistant to do the many small things you plan for, such as the grapevine, so you can continue putting out these wonderful videos.
Thanks for the detailed tour - it served to remind me to give haircuts to most of my containers. We've not had nearly enough rain this summer, and things are starting to look a little fried. (Central Virginia) Many of your tips have led me to severely prune some shrubs that probably would not have otherwise survived this summer, but are ok now. I can't wait to see that hydrangea panniculata next year!
That fatsia is gorgeous! My favorite of the tour, I think. Why wouldn't plants compete (negatively) when you under plant them (the peony/rudbeckia situation you mentioned)? Is that rudbeckia an annual? Great tour, thanks for doing that, definitely time consuming for you but much appreciated. (Spotted the pups' tennis ball at 4:44! Ha! Love a lived-in garden)
I’m in Marietta and mine is still looking pretty healthy. I was really surprised that it hasn’t crisped up yet. I have a verbena bonariensis that come up right next to it but it didn’t mind the company. The finches like it too.
Hey neighbor! Since you’re so close by, I’m in Dallas-the north end! Everyone’s must be looking good around here. Might be because it hasn’t been as hot a summer as normal. Plus the rainfall has been fairly regular.
Your garden is looking so wonderful! There are so many interesting things to see. I have learned so much watching the new house playlist of videos. I check out your other videos for gardening info when I have a question about a plant, pruning, etc. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Love the Prairie Sun Rudbeckia; thank you for introducing it to me. Also, I think I've figured out who does your filming. It's Bree, no? Reason for guess is you seem to be neighbors, and camera panned to exactly the plant you were describing at one point, which doesn't often happen when nongardeners do the filming.
I love how your garden is developing and the robust health of each specimen. Why did you say that we probably will never be able to buy the Beijing Beaty Mahonia? It’s the most beautiful variety I have ever seen!
I have 2 of those Beijing Beauty Mahonia. Picked them up at Broadwells nursery in Angier last fall. Love them beautiful foliage and flowers in the winter. Great video as always Jim.
I’m in Huntersville, outside of Charlotte. I have to cut my Peonies back in October. I’ve never had them dye back on their own. I’ve read that you can cut back in September, but I can’t seem to get to them that quick & I love their foliage. I’m looking forward to seeing your garden in Winter, please do a tour!
My cosmos are doing the same thing! Zone 6b and purchased a 6 pack (maybe 4 pack). One is blooming white flowers, one has had one maroon flower and the other two, no flowers!!! Very strange!!!
I just noticed I have some torenia popping up right next to my supertunias. Every year i find some somewhere in my garden, always a surprise where they’ll show up. I may move them as they’ll get gobbled up by the supertunia.
Beautiful tour as always. Yes every garden is unique which makes them so interesting. I have the same burgandy colored cosmos( cant remember the name its burpee seed) some stalks flowered and others didnt. I'm glad it's not just me. First year growing cosmos.
Some of my Cosmos did the same thing this year. Both Apricot Lemonade and Xsenia varieties - some blooming and others just growing with no buds. It's so weird. I think I'm going to go back to good old Sensation Mix, lol.
I too had that happen with my Cosmos. I bought a Seashell variety, and I’d say 1/2 did went the no flowering. Also…they were purple on the package…but pink, fuchsia and white.
Great work, Jim! Thanks for the update on the tree formed hydrangea. I am one following that as I am trying to do the same in my yard. I have just two branches at the top and I wondered why I wasn’t getting any new branching - I didn’t cut mine back! I assume I don’t want to encourage new growth this late. Should I wait until spring to start a more intentional pruning program?
Your garden looks gorgeous right now 🤩. I had the Stellar Ruby magnolia in zone 9 for 18 months... could not get it to grow in spite of lots of care. Couldn't take the heat, so I wouldn't plant this farther south than zone 8.
@@queen_sophie7515 first time growing them so no idea lol. I did FINALLY get some blooms on it this week but the thing looks like a small christmas tree it got so big!
Jim pls I need your help. I bought a golden fall redbud this March after watching your video. Why is the leaves wilting ? It is a weeping redbud like the one you have but there are branching coming from the base of the trunk and the foliage on those are large and healthy. The foliage on the weeping branches are so tiny and now wilting. Pls do you know what is going on?
I Have some 8ft tall cosmos not blooming this year either, but the odd thing is I collected the seed from my cosmos last year that just bloomed their heads off. So I'm just like Huh? The weather being cooler and wet is my only guess, cause last year was very hot and dry. Nevertheless they have been chopped down to like 18in hoping maybe they bloom
Love your tours! Speaking of peonies...I got a fairly large plant on clearance from Lowe’s. I had planned on planting it when it got a little cooler (8a Texas), would you recommend chopping it down when it’s planted later in fall or go ahead and plant now?
The Golden Falls Redbud 🤩. Can simeone tell me... Would it survive in a container over the winter in SW Pennsylvania (zone 6)? Whats the WORST that can happen if planted in a full sun (I dont have any areas with shade)? Is it a favorite of deer? THANKS A BUNCH!😃💛
Maybe by the end of the year when theres not much to talk about, I'd love to know how much it all cost. Including the labour to which u did urself but other homeowners would typically hire out. I'd be interested in how much it is, compared to how much landscaper companies charge. I think it would inspire people to get out in the yard and just get "the job" done. --it's not common to have a industry expert document their yard transformation from literal scratch. So it would be lovely to see the numbers from this unique documentation! Thank you for the consideration!
My new diamond spire gardenia which was planted back in spring started getting yellow leaves and it has migrated from the bottom to nearly the top of the plant. Flowered once and it stopped. Its the middle of summer and I could not figure out if its because of overwatering or underwatering (getting water every morning)? It gets sun from about 10-3pm. House facing east west. Should I be concerned 😟? I don't think it has anything to do with fertilizer as I have only done it about once a month. Help! Also how do you propogate this type of gardenia with multiple clumps of dense leaves? Its totally different than normal gardenia where you can trim the cutting down to only a few leaves on top.
Did not see the blue star creeper you were planning to plant around some of your rock pathways. Hopefully you decided not to plant it! It’s horribly invasive! Speaking from experience unfortunately!
Golden falls redbud. Looks too much like kudzu. Recently bought a 4 acre property in North Georgia with kudzu I'm fighting to kill. This just looks too much like a kudzu plant that has overtaken a native plant. No thanks!

I have enjoyed everyone of these tours, and they prove you don't need a large estate to create a special space, I have yet to find white salvia.
It's too cold and nasty outside. Watching videos I've missed! Always informative.
