I really enjoy seeing the bees nestling in and sleeping on the flowers. I never realized that they did that until this year.

We finally got some much needed rain here in N. Calif. but...it's taken a toll on my flowers most are laying down from the weight. But my spirits are up after 1 inch of rain overnight. So needed here.

You have a nice Fall garden going there. I’ve been making an effort to have Fall bloomers too. I have a regular Pineapple Sage. I plant one every Spring. Didn’t find a golden one this past Spring though. I also bought African Blue Basil this year based on how it does for you. Not easy to find it. At any rate, you’re not kidding about the pollinators constantly being on it. Loved it! Hopefully I can find it again next Spring!

Wow! Your yard looks abundant and amazing! I still have a lot of my summer flowers in. I have cuphea that is 3 feet tall and the bees and butterflies love it! The hummingbirds are doing battle over the cuphea. As long as the pollinators are still on the plants, I’m just leaving them in place. I have loved the videos with the plant pros.

Things are not much different in central Indiana Zone 5. The temperature reached 90 two weeks ago, and I still have dahlias, salvias, lantana, coleus, gomphrena, etc. continuing to bloom. Historically our first frost is 10/15, but nothing close to freezing is predicted for the next ten days.

I have a couple of different lantana here in central Ga in Zone 8B and they are still full of flowers and butterflies on Oct. 23. I find new "babies" all over the yard and love them. I don't have the usual amount of birds this year, mostly cardinals. Where have the birds gone?

I am sure you are careful but a few years ago I bought 3 butterfly bushes that were covered with bees and butterflies until I noticed a lot of bees were sleeping on the flowers and the butterflies disappeared. Eventually I found them dead on the ground & it turned out only one plant had a neonicotinoid tag on it so I looked it up - to my horror I was inadvertently killing the pollinators! I dug them up and had to dispose of the soil also and luckily I got my money back and since then I only buy plants and trees from companies that don't use neonics.

It's funny, but I have a native callicarpa in the backyard next to a stream and pond with loads of bird activity all year and they never eat the berries in fall. I wonder if some varities are tastier to the birds than others? Your white variety is lovely, Jim!

I cut mine all the way down last year and they came back to be about 6-7 ft but they come from new shoots. Is there a way to prune so that they don’t have such a large base after several winters of pruning? Or should it be pruned at all?

    • @kaylac3367

We have several moles in our front yard. From what I've read, they don't even like each other. We have tried all the products you can put down in the tunnel as bait to kill them (doesn't work). The best we have found to work is traps. Mash the tunnels down and set the trap on one of the tunnels. You should be able to tell the active tunnels because they reappear. We've killed 5 so far this summer. In the meantime you need to apply either liquid form or granular to kill their food source going forward. Hope that helps.
