    These tents remind me of my very first tent, especially the triplex. The triplex is a throwback to the classic A frame tent(old is new again). That old relied on a pole in the middle of each doorway to help support the tent. One thing even back then was the dam pole right in the middle of the door. Was always a hassle getting in and out. I'm 6' 3" and getting my long legs out while exiting the tent was always a challenge.
    I do concede that the weight savings are significant even going up against my current tent(Nemo Dagger3).

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great observation! I didn't think of it that way, but that is a perfect comparison. Having huge side doors on the Triplex does help maneuvering compared to the "end" entrance of A frame tents. The pole is still there and every once and a while it will remind me as I'm trying to exit half asleep. Thanks for watching!

    I love my Ultamid 2 with full insert. I took it on my AT hike last year. Although it weighs a bit more and is quite bulky, the space and comfort were well worth it. Every night I spread out all my gear on one side as I slept on the other. This made nighttime and morning organization unbeatable. And the tent is bombproof. No condensation issues. No wind or rain issues.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great tent and I agree with you, the bulk/weight is worth the space it provides. Glad to hear it made it on the AT! I have used this tent all winter in the North East and it has worked well. Bug season is back so I will be carrying the mesh insert again. I am going to add the half insert this season and give that a try. I like messing around with gear and trying new tents but I think I have found something that works for me year round so the other tents are being sold (keeping the Triplex). The Zpacks Plex tents are hard to beat for weight but I still gravitate towards the Ultamid. Thanks for watching!

      Exactly.... i like to organize my gear and cook ( careefully with a windburner on a plate) out of bug range.... in some places eg NZ you can get clouds of sandflys that drive you nuts.
      Full insert also allows stargazing when used alone on nonwet nights. And even having lunch under in places like Tasmania, where you can get 6 large marsh flies dive bombing you in almost all areas in summer....
      Mmm thats a big plus for me. Had trouble staying still in tasmania in summer.
      If one wants to use the trek poles on a side trip dayhike, one can replace them with a stick if there is.one . Thanks to their reinforced apex.
      Fly + full insert + 12 pegs. Is 1281 grams. Still light for 1 person, 600g tents are a bit crampy for myself.
      Also can use fly only in snow, allows alcoves to be dug etc.

      @@ouhike2 I'm thinking of selling my two person tents to get a ultramid 2. Do you think it would comfortable fit two adults plus a dog? I'm 6' tall if that helps.
      I like the idea is having one tent to cover all seasons and adding the insert during rain and bug seasons.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff Ozimek The Ultamid 2 alone has plenty of room for two people plus a dog. Adding the insert reduces some floor space and it may feel a little tight depending on the size of the dog and the amount of gear. This tent does not have a vestibule and most of the gear is tucked in the corners inside the tent taking up some floor space. As long as your dog is a good sleeper, I can see a medium sized dog sleeping between two people at the foot end. Hope this helps?

    This was an excellent review! I just finished a simple backpacking trip in Yosemite NP and I was using my MSR Hubba 1P tent that I purchased way back in 2012. I'm much older now (70) and I've concluded that trying to enter and exit a 36" opening on my hands and knees is no fun and increasingly difficult. Then I spotted the ULTAMID 2 and noticed the pyramid shape with a tall opening, something that I can enter by just stooping a bit. I'm not thrilled with the price and heavier weight, but for the reasons just mentioned I think the roominess and tall entry will greatly improve my enjoyment of backpacking. I also really want DCF material rather than nylon.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I love Yosemite and haven't been there in a long time. The Ultamid is easier to get in and out of especially without an insert. Certain conditions require the insert (bugs, wet etc..) but if you can use it without the insert .... I think you'd be very happy with the livability and function. The single insert does leave one side of the tent open and gives more headroom in that area. If you have any other questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks for Watching!

      @@ouhike2 Terrific, thanks so much. I think I prefer a full insert rather than a single insert, otherwise I'd feel like I was back in my Hubba 1 person tent. Brian, Thanks for the comment. My Ultamid has only been out twice :) but its third trip is next weekend. I am getting the RL pole but their suggestion was the 710 because this will be used all winter long (HMG marketed the Ultamid as 4 season so time will tell). Do you feel the 600 series pole can withstand snow load and 30-40mph winds or would you opt for the 710? I live in Upstate NY and it seems to me from watching your videos, we have similar weather. I agree! The prices are out of control! My Ultamid 2 with both options of double insert and single insert combined with my SW 4400 pack cost more than my first car(that doesn't even sound right). This is quality "Made In USA" gear and I prefer buying from USA manufacturers.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both tents perform perfect for my needs. My two favorite tents of all time and they both function in their own way. If you watch my winter videos, I do not use either insert with my Ultamid. I prefer no insert in the winter and as light as the insert is ... one less thin to carry. When bug season rolls around it becomes a different story. I don't leave home without the insert. Also, upstate NY is wet and muddy. The insert provides a floor and helps protect the gear. If you have specific performance questions, please let me know. For my needs, I can't think of any other tents I need. Thanks for watching!

    Have you pitched the HMG on rock? Wondering how viable that tent is when dirt isn’t available. I’m concerned that a shelter like that couldn’t be held up entirely by placing rocks on top of stakes to hold them in place.

      @ouhike2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is an expensive tent and I can only imagine what the price ends up being in other countries. For me it does have more pluses than my other tents and I find I’m gravitating to using it most of the time. I probably will be doing another review soon and focus just on this tent. There are a few things I don’t like and may be deal breakers for some (no vestibule when using double insert for example) but nothing that bothers me personally.

    If you were to guess which one of these tents would have the most available air flow in a 90+ degree summer storm? I was looking at both of these tents to replace my current tent when this happens.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a tough one because where I live 90 degrees never happens when its time to set up camp. If we are comparing apples to apples and using the insert on the Ultamid, I would pick the Triplex for a 90 degree rain storm. I feel that having the vestibules, allows the tent to be pitched higher and in turn allowing more air flow through the tent. The fly on the Ultamid cannot be set higher than the bathtub floor or rain will get in for sure. This does keep air from flowing directly through the tent. If the Ultamid is set up without the insert then air flow would not be hampered (this is all personal preference). The doors on the Ultamid cannot be left open even in a light rain or the inside will get wet. I prefer the versatility of the Ultamid but I can see advantages with the Triplex. This is just my opinion and I have only used the Ultamid twice. Please take my info with a grain of salt as I really would like a full year with the Ultamid before I offer many opinions. Hope this helped and thanks for watching.

      To be fair, I have not had the triplex in anything more than a mediocre storm at best. I love the Ultamid for windy wet weather and that is my tent of choice. I love the triplex for summer months when more airflow is needed. That may answer part of your question being it is easier to get a cross breeze through the tent. Exactly what I bought. The Ultamid is the better tent for the extremes. The condensation is less than Zpacks due to the vents in the beak. There is a better constant air flow on the walls. Also the duplex/triplex cannot be fully closed, as the doors have no full zipper. If you go mountains or coast lines, extreme weather, the Ultamid is the better protective structure. I still think I may buy the single person inner for the Ultamid later on as well....another option others don't have. I wish HMG would not have ditched the top vent closures.....

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree and the Ultamid is quickly becoming my tent of choice. I think I will buy the single insert also, a slight weight savings and just another option. This tents versatility is GREAT! I can see where the lack of vent closures may be an issue but I have found (MSR Hubba Hubba) tents without any top venting in cool/cold weather makes for more wet. At least they left the vents there.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Nigul 6’5” might be pushing it but I would go with the triplex for sure because even with two people you can sleep at a slight angle which gives tall people a little extra room. You would not win that much in length with Ultamid?

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Nigul No, I feel the Ultamid 2 w/insert would not fit 6’5” comfortably. You would be touching the bug netting on the insert. Primarily because of the pole in the center which requires sleeping fairly straight. Without the insert it would be no problem as there is more room. Also, I feel the room in the triplex is more comfortable for two with gear. There has to be some reviews of taller people who own zpacks tents? I don’t want to steer you wrong as these are very expensive purchases.

  • @BacktotheOutdoors
    @BacktotheOutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m also 5’11 but use a 78” quilt in the winter. Your feet looked close to the mesh on the HMG. Any issues so far with a wet foot box?

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only use the mesh insert in warmer weather when bugs are an issue. My sleeping bag does come in contact with the mesh insert but does not collect moisture from the main tent. The distance between the insert and the tent is enough to prevent any contact (as long as I'm centered and not sliding in either direction). Condensation only builds on the main tent body and in winter it usually turns into a thin layer of frost that is easily brushed off before packing the tent. Warm muggy summer nights the doors are left open and I pitched the tent higher to encourage as much air flow as possible. Hope this answered your question ... Thanks for watching!

      @@ouhike2 - thanks. I've been looking at both these tents for a while. We are currently using the Copper Spur HV UL3 - weighing in at 70 ounces with the ground sheet. After adding stakes to the weight of the HMG, the Ultamid would save us about 25 ounces, which is significant, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend $1,140 for 25 ounces. The triplex seems to make more sense from a weight savings and cost perspective, but lacks the versatility and other features you mentioned...I guess this is why we are still carrying the Big Agnes.

    • @ouhike2
      @ouhike2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BacktotheOutdoors Gear is so subjective and its easy to get sucked in to saving weight when its not the most practical avenue to take. I have never used a Copper Spur HV UL3 and cannot comment but the reviews are amazing and speak volumes. I like Dyneema gear! Not only does it save weight its the advantages for what I use it for that shines. The Triplex does make more sense for weight savings and I will continue to use it for warm weather and when big storms are not in the forecast. I lean on the HMG because, like you said, its versatility is what sets it apart. This tent works year round and with the option of single or double insert ... no insert for winter ... For me, this tent works and I don't know if I would spend $1,140 to save 25oz unless I was doing long trails ... I like comfort and don't mind carrying a little extra if it works.
