ZPACKS TRIPLEX TENT: PROS & CONS (why you should upgrade)

  • Since we were forced off the Appalachian Trail in March due to COVID-19, we have decided to upgrade a lot of our gear. Our previous tent (Kelty TN2) has been our go-to for the past 4 years when we go camping, but have now realised that it was just too heavy for a thru-hike.
After plenty of research on tents that would be best suited for us on long hikes, we decided on the ZPacks Triplex. In this video we will discuss why we changed tents and what we like and dislike so far about the Ultralight ZPacks tent.
We may also mention what hikes we have planned in the near future too...

We’re Scott & Lauren, a couple from Melbourne in Australia!
Our passion for travelling, backpacking and hiking started back in July of 2017 when we headed off to Europe for a 6-month backpacking trip, which would ultimately change our lives. After returning in January 2018, the "standard" post-travel emotions hit.
We both decided we would knuckle down and try and save as much money as possible before jetting off again to see more of this beautiful world.
First stop... Atlanta in Georgia, USA - Here is where we will be attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike beginning in March 2020!

    Great review!
I have one, a few years old now... I got the slightly heavier fabric just so that it was slighty "tougher", and less see through. My previous tent was 2.7kg so an extra 100 grams or so was nothing, came in at 770g from memory.
I used it on the Hume and Hovell track, it was great and sooo roomy. I did a couple of things different, 1) I put my gear in the 4 corners ( water in one, boots in another, pack etc in last two) it helped keep the floor "straight", I slept in the middle. 2) on the "optional" last 4 guy ropes on the tent roof, I placed stick "risers" (about 14" , 350mm high that the guy ropes went over before going down to the pegs... helps lift the tent roof at the attachment point and gives much more room inside.

Using the double guylines at each end, utilizing a stick to elevate the line before you stake it down gives each end “massive” headroom! (Seemingly vertical wall headroom!) I loved this feature…and love the tent! Sadly, so did a rodent: Which I repaired with 32, 2 sided Tenacious Tape patches! “Bombproof, but not chipmunk proof!!”

Nice review of the Triplex. That is a huge amount of space for the weight! I’ve been really happy with how my Altaplex went on its first trip. Zpacks design and quality for their shelters I think justifies the higher price tag.

Does the $1000 limit on import taxes include shipping or just the official price of the tent? Also are other accessories purchased as separate items with the tent and shipped in the same packaging taxed in the same $1000 limit? Or should they be purchased and shipped separately? 🤔

Lastly, the camouflage, spruce green or burnt orange colours give a lot more privacy as they are not near as transparent and see through as the blue.

    • @Y2J3469

I am very surprised by that as the vast majority of thru hikers and some of the most notable UL TH-camrs that use a Zpacks tent stake out all four (4) corners first just as Zpacks recommends. I have only used the Duplex and Altaplex tents and not the triplex. I can unequivocally state that the best pitch you can possibly get from the duplex is staking out all four (4) corners first. So, it was hard to believe that this would not also be the case for the triplex: See, for example, the following (which is a fine upstanding gentlemen pitching exactly how I pitch the duplex and it is literally a perfect picture pitch:

This is the Follow BigFoot method th-cam.com/video/NTiFRlBjwcY/w-d-xo.html and it is vastly superior to the Zpacks suggested method. I have adapted this method for single pole Zpacks Mid tents th-cam.com/video/uDqw-s-ZiUQ/w-d-xo.html such as the Plexamid and Altaplex models and it works a treat. Blue Boy

The floor area is small for a 3 person tent. You cannot have 2 people + gear inside, there is not enough space for that. This tent has interior dimensions of 152cm x 2.3m. if you take two 64cm wide sleeping pads (like Big Agnes Rapide SL Wide) then you have only 24 cm left in between the pads, not enough for your gear. It is super small for a 3 person tent. Not to mention that there is a significant angle to the sides, which reduces effective floorspace.

    Another awesome video guys.
Loved our Triplex on the AT! It was awesome in huge storms and snow. We went the camo for the darkness, it blocks a lot of light compared to the blue or green. What I didn’t like the fiddly door openings in the middle of the night.

Question for you savvy Aussies: I may be attempting an AT thru hike with my son this year or if not, then maybe 2022 or 23. I am looking at the Zpack Triplex as our tent. They offer a footprint to go under the tent. I see hikers using footprints on other tents. From your experience, do you think a thru hiker would need a footprint to go under the Triplex, or do you think it might hold up without one?

    • @LaurenandScott
      @LaurenandScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We were asking ourselves the same thing when we purchased it. To be honest, we don’t think it’s necessary, just be careful on where you set up and check for pointy sticks etc. Having the footprint will be more protection but it’s also more weight and we think If you’re careful enough, the bottom of the tent is definitely strong enough to handle most surfaces.
