    This is the best video I've seen on hyperlight. If I would have had this info. sooner I would have bought this instead of zpacks at least on one occasion. I'm sizing up the unbound now, I think its just a zpacks duplex, slightly heavier. I have the duplex so I think I'll try the one you displayed here. the smaller version of the duplex, hopefully lighter. I'm learning, so think you so much for the information. I've made some very expensive mistakes. Your video is so awesome, I can't thank you enough. they really should send you some free stuff because no one has given a better understanding of these products then you from what I've seen. Your review is the best, and I envy your lifestyle. slowly I hope to see more of it myself in my own world. going to Europe would be awesome, I hope to do that someday also. seems like you have some beautiful places to see over there

    @Annie Le Outside thank you so much for this review. We went with the 4. It certainly is huge! We missed an obvious downside and that is lack of vestibule combined with the top of the zipper nearing mid-tent, opening it up during rain or storm just comes straight down in to our down bags. Any tricks to minimize this issue? Otherwise, phenomenal tent. Has withstood super high winds and snowstorms in the Rocky Mountains

    • @annieleoutside6044
      @annieleoutside6044  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Rodney. Well we dont unzip it all the way if its really wet (just crawl in and out) and what we have done about the lack of porch is unclip one corner and fold the inner back which then creates a big porch space. hope that helps!

    • @pascalvee1965
      @pascalvee1965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rodney - For 1 or 2 person, you can sleep at the "back" placing your sleeping gear parallel to the door rather than pointing at it. I went for the UL4 too for that reason, and despite hiking solo most time. For a minor weight penalty (compared to UL2) you gained flexibility - something welcome when you call your tent Home for longer period, when you need to wait for the heat or the storm to pass...

    Great video comparison of the 3 tents ( only interested in the mids though) Was going to get the Ultamid 2 with full insert but now thinking of going for the Ultamid 4 with half insert. weight difference is negligible and not much more in price. I have been using a Go lite Shangri La 5 for many years and like the space. At 6'1" the extra height might be nice.,

    • @annieleoutside6044
      @annieleoutside6044  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 4 is sooo much bigger than the 2. I think i prefer the 2 as its a bit cosier, but the 4 really gives you that extra height.

    We use the Ultimid 4 with the half mesh bathtub insert for cycle touring, All our panniers and gear fit easily in one half. Plus we really like that if the weather is really bad in the morning we can take down the Half without ever leaving the tent. That allows us to gear up out of the weather 😃. I do find it impossible to tighten the Ultimid 4 to the ground using Hyperlites carbon pole, which has been annoying. Do you have problems with the Ultimids not being tight to the ground ?

    • @annieleoutside6044
      @annieleoutside6044  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a great set up! Having so much porch space must be great. We dont actually have a hyperlite pole, we have the ruta locura adjustable which seems a good length at its shortest for getting a snug pitch. with the paddle its harder, ive sometimes dug an indent for it to sit into.

    You said you used the Ultamid 2 in the winter. Did it trap the heat at all ? I am considering using it as a winter tent because it is so lightweight but am concerned that is will be freezing cold in the tent. What was your experience with this tent in cold weather ?

    • @annieleoutside6044
      @annieleoutside6044  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, these are not tents for providing lots of insulation. Saying that, im not sure a more traditional sil nylon double skin provides much either. you can pitch them higher or lower to allow more or less air flow at the bottom. The advantage of such a light shelter is it allows me to carry that extra jacket for warmth.

  • @newlifeeveryday1821
    @newlifeeveryday1821 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said the Ultamid 2 was a great winter tent. What did you mean ? Does it trap heat pretty well ? If so how does that work with the bottom of the tent open ?

    • @annieleoutside6044

      @@newlifeeveryday1821 Id say the tent provides more of a wind shelter than warmth. Not that i think a double skin sil nylon tent provides much warmth either. But as its light i can take that extra jacket or bigger sleeping bag which does keep me warm.. I guess itl be down to personal preferance.

    They are useless for anything but camping in snow, due to the ridiculously visible bright white DCF, they are very heavy for DCF tents, and ludicrously expensive too.
    My Jumper Home Mountain House 1.5p, in real tree camo DCF, can be used anywhere thanks to its stealthy colour scheme, it only weighs 326g, or 448g with a 3m x 1.5m Polycro groundsheet (about half the weight of a HMG DCF tent), and it only cost me £350, with free postage and no customs fees!

    • @annieleoutside6044
      @annieleoutside6044  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean i use them all year round and never have a problem with the light. DCF is an expensive material and has differing grades like other fabric. I costed up the fabric using the same grade as hyperlite and it would have cost me the same in fabric as it would to buy the tent. Each to thier own though and im glad you have a shelter you like.

    • @alfoutdoors9660
      @alfoutdoors9660 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your only using pay to campsites with your tent then fair enough, but I would never pay to stay and I always wild camp for free. But the UK government is currently trying to pass a bill (which will soon be on it's second reading through Parliament) that will make trespassing (and therefore wild camping) in England and Wales a criminal offence, instead of a civil offence as it is now. ...So stealth gear will become absolutely essential...A bright white tent is the complete opposite of stealthy, hence why I only recommend ultralight tents made from low viz camo DCF.

    I don’t understand the hype in this brand, seems like a overpriced $800 piece of tarp. I don’t think this brand will survive in any extreme condition. trekking pole as support is a joke to me. Get a big Agnes, MSR or NEMO that’s more reliable.
