The MR2 gets a shiny new turbo

- Marty has been hacking away at this nugget of an MR2 for weeks and you're (still) along for the ride! The stock turbo looks broken, the intake doesn't work, the dump pipe is wrecked, the bolts all seized. The car doesn't run very well but with some mad new aftermarket parts, the MR2 is going to be reborn ready to battle Moog's MOON Buggy!

Moog: rebuilds carbs and new fuel system, done.
Marty: rebuilds entire MR2.
I know, wonder if he is planning on keeping the MR2 sure putting a lot of time and $ into it.
The moog already fully modified.
Marty should keep this car seeing as how much work he has put I to upgrading factory parts. Plus the rarity of the car itself. In just a few short year with the way things Are going in the world. These cars are going to be antiques and not like cars from the 1950s. A whole new generation. Of cars that was forgotten and abused and represented automotive execellece of it's time.
Marty: rebuilds entire MR2 by himself. Moog: needs to ask for help to rebuild carb and new fuel system. Haha, it was a unique vehicle, I'll give him that.

I love how Marty's shed is more professional than the MCM shed
Love that shed. So jealous!
Probably because MCM's shed is actually a warehouse/storage unit while Marty's shed is an actual shed
@@arianwinanto6299 Thanks for clarifying, we all needed that.......
Yea I wonder why they don't just shoot in Marty's shed. Surely having a lift is worth any other issues.

The bit of Marty explaining his way of fueling stuff was actually very good, no idea why it stuck out to me, but it was a nice section of the video. Great work as always lads.

I don't wanna have to pull my engine again. It's only been like 3 months :'(
The irony of him talking about Camry's. The V6 rear, pretty much needs the entire top of the intake off and a dozen parts, I feel you.
I love how in the 80's/90's Japanese car manufacturers just made whatever they thought was cool lol
"Mid engine sports car that looks like a space ship? Sure!"
"4 wheel steering? You bet!"
"Overbuilt, over engineered engines and parts? Ah hell yeah."
"Putting our top of the line engines in Everything we can think of? Wayyy ahead of ya."
And now it's "We pride ourselves on our boring cars".
Even when they come out with engines that have potential, nobody does the R&D to make aftermarket stuff for them anymore, unless it's one of Aasbo's Formula Drift cars xD
Mtndewgang yeah I thought the same when he referenced the engine sharing between the Supra, Soarer, Chaser, Magesta or whatever it was.
You’d think that’d be a cheaper way to go even today, just build 2 or 3 engines that work awesome and have lots of tuning potential, and just give them all different maps from the factory based on which vehicle they’re designated to.
@@roddydykes7053 Well that is what they do now, but with chassis platforms as well as engines. They had so many platforms on the go and it's part of what bankrupted these companies. Now everything is a variant of a shitty crossover SUV hatchback thing because it's cheaper and easier to do that than have 15 cars built off 5 different platforms. It's a shame no one makes anything interesting anymore, but they had to go for boring efficiency to survive.
@@AfferbeckBeats It's funny that you say "to survive", cause companies like Toyota and Honda are bigger now than ever. They make a killing off of these appliances and they know it. If Toyota can make big bucks off of mid engine 4 pots coupes then they'll crank them out like hotcakes, but the people want crossovers and 70mpg and they have money to pay for it so automobile manufacturers will supply the demand as long as there is a market. The sport coupes can only watch with envy from the second hand market. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Goddamnit Toyota make the 4th gen MRs
@@ToreDL87 You are entirely correct and one reason they are proud of the boring cars is 99% the population in the United States they all want either a brand new pick up truck or a brand new S.U.V. that is all they want.

Marty's Matchbox Makeovers crossover? A tale of two Martys?!
Hello from Russia from the Altai territory I have been following the channel since 2012
It just popped in my head watching this latest video just how far you two have come in the last few years. Watching your videos from the beginning, when you two struggled with goofy appearance mods, to seeing you rebuilding engines and even whole cars, has been a great journey. I'm not even a "car guy", yet your videos are very entertaining, carried mostly on your personalities and relationship. Thanks for the fun!
Really enjoying this series on the MR2. One of my favorite cars from the 90s. I also like the super charged version of the first gen car.
My Aw11 was great- nowhere near this hard to work on! Preferred NA coz it had sharper throttle response than SC version.
I heard MK1.5's are great. I wouldn't know anymore because I haven't driven mine in 9 months.
There's something cathartic about watching you guys work on your cars. Just puts me in a better mood.
Damn this MR2 starting to look real serious with that turbo and a modern ECU
I have my Suzuki Kei Van in parts, engine fully rebuilt but no motivation to get it finished, its been like this for 10 years. Engine rebuilt in the last 4 years, just the little nitty gritty things like fuel hoses, vac hoses, etc... needs replacing. Watching these give me back my motivation to complete my Van, I can almost hear my 550cc Turbocharged engine come back to life.
I really can’t see how this can lose to the Moog Buggy.

It's so impressive having such an in-depth understanding of how a car works that you can custom make things/fit generic modern parts in order to actually improve the stock car. I watch some other TH-camrs and you just know they are botching and making things worse. You watch MCM and it's the complete opposite. The explaining super complex stuff in an easy to understand way adds authenticity.
It's also made me want to try fix something up... not that I have the skills or knowledge but it just looks so satisfying.
As I am watching this, my ladyfriend is watching nature documentary. One of the monkeys from the documentary sounded 110% like Moog, it is awesome. Like Moog is with me watching this.

One of the things i LOVE about MCM is that they keep it real and simple, they didnt become a car channel that is all about flex, just like other youtubers that used to be fun, but now just want to flex expensive stuff that they can put in their cars.
I was halfway through another video when the notification came up for this episode. I have never said goodbye to anything faster than I said goodbye to that other video.
This is my kind of video. I love the other MCM stuff but watching Marty get stuck in and explaining every step along the way is tremendous.
Thanks for putting this up already guys
It’s saved my day 👍
Stay safe everyone x
Your future self will always appreciate anti seize! Love that you guys do things so properly.
Coming along nicely marty, keep up the good work brother!
thanks mate! trying
Martin, watching you show such care and elegance with autos is truly a treat.
" Its raining thats why theres the sound of rain on the shed" absolutely killed me XD hmm what might cause the sound of rain on a shed?
That removing the trunk lid to work on the engine truck is genius, and slick as hell. Looking forward to seeing this thing skid!
the two best things about Marty's garage is that it has a lift and not haunted
Sitting here in isolation with a bourbon +lemonade watching MCM. Makes the days simply breeze by. Thanks guys.
I really miss the smooth elegant styling of 90's sports cars. I wish that kind of design philosophy would make a return to the mainstream.
Watching you guys over the years, you both have become excellent mechanics with solid skills. Nice work, thanks for bringing us along.
Hey Marty,
Did you let Cheryl soak overnight for fuller penetration?
As a Toyota owner, I am just loving this build. Love how Marty just digs right in and does a proper job of it. MR2's rock.
Extra injector is most likely a "cold start" injector, my old 90s Volvo had one too.
I'm really enjoying this MR2 build. The rusted components and seized bolts just keeps it real.
That can be a problem for "Ron" amazed to hear you use such niche Aussie slang there Marty lol. For those not sure what that means "Saving it for Ron" = Saving it for later on.
Thanks I was wondering who ron was
I'm British and I know people who use the same phrase 🤷♂️
The most amazing and probably difficult part is all the research they have done to make these videos. I wish I was as good!
Hang on a minute, bringing a turbo Toyota to an air cooled Kombi fight?
Isn't that like the scene form Crocodile Dundee?
"That's not a knife"
The music in this episode is somthing else, love it!
Mad props to your videographer for getting buttery smooth shots + keeping the edit super engaging. Good inspo to try when i start my channel. Cheers guys
The fifth injector might be for cold starts, my 89' VW Scirocco 2 has one too
That's it!
Can confirm, early 90's toyota's tend to have them. my 3vz-fe has one. they also have a tendency to get stuck partially on, causing rich running.
Congrats! Were you watching the video where he mentioned that? Because he did mention that.
Same in about 30 years of jaguar and other euros from my experience
Same with my Datsun. I think they called it a cold start valve, which I found amusing.
Really great to see this MR2 basically being fully restored. Both the AW11 and the SW20 are two of the most enjoyable and rewarding cars you could find yourself driving. But I'll never forget the first time I drove an SW20, because I instantly bonded with it, like I'd been driving it for years. Within a few minutes of getting in the car I just understood it, and I had no fears about kicking the clutch and getting the tail out around some tight roads. Even with it's quirks, never has a car felt more "right" to me to drive than an SW20, especially after only a few minutes in drivers seat. I always tell people if they have the chance to own or drive an SW20, you just HAVE to do it.
Good content while I’m quarantine and chilling
You may want to check to make sure the vacuum controlled flappers in the intake are working. Mine where broken in multiple ways. I ended up removing the plated to bypass the whole system. The other thing to consider is the head gasket. I had a ats turbo and turned it up to 15 psi and almost immediately poped a head gasket. I put a steel one in with a new timing belt and it was good to go.
Random Person good tip thank you!
6:30 Marty's O face as things just finally work and everything fits....!!
I have to say, thanks for uploading for us to enjoy and watch in this tough time! So well done, just a pat on the back for what you're doing for us! I wish you guys safe and healthy throughout this time. Keep up with the good content. You have made Australians proud!
It’s been brilliant watching someone else suffer with the mk2 😂 they all seem to have a grouchy personality. Still miss it like crazy though
Love to see Marty's shed! By itself it's a measure of how far you guys have come. Good for you Marty!
9:59 "Welp, I'm never seeing that screw/bit/socket again!" Me every time this happens in the engine bay and I can't find whatever I dropped
Try using ice spray on the clutch pipes and brake bleeding valves. Works superb and better than heat imo.
I used to have a black turbo mr2 just like that. Flipped it into a ditch when I was younger. Lol
Great to see a plug for ATS Racing. Those guys have been doing great stuff for MR2s for years!
I'm enjoying this format, thanks for the content, watching while huffing jdm melon air fresheners 😷
The air swirls out in the opposite direction you gotta look real close or hold it up to a lamp to see tho...
This could be the best music I've heard a non music youtuber use
of course mr2 owners are friendly nobody else talks to em !
Thanks for putting together such awesome videos! You’re making my self-isolation bearable!
When the montage tunes started, my inner child wanted glow sticks and a whistle.
That 5th fuel injector is probably a cold-start injector. That was a popular thing, back when ECMs didn't have enough computing power to handle that.
Edit: oops, he covers that later in the video.
Well this certainly beats looking at corona numbers... Cheers!
MCM should do a Toyota Corona to appease the virus
Well done Marty. Little by little it is happening.
Great tip on removing the boot cover.
Thanks for sharing.
Love the MR2 but can’t wait for the GEMINI!!!
The soundtrack for this build is so freaking good!
Feel Like would of been easier just dropping the engine out the bottom 😂
Good work on this. You have continued to develop your knowledge and ability over the years that I've watched MCM.
I like the parts without music; very zen and peaceful.
Marty really knows how to fill an episode just cram full of content. Excellent episode!!!
9:25 the 5th injector is known as the cold start injector, and is a throwback to the 1st gen 3S-GE engine (gold top). as far as I recall, both 1st and 2nd gen's (1986 - 1993) had this, and the 3rd gen did away with this feature before the 4th gen (BEAMS) came into the picture. that shape MR2 had both the 2nd gen and 3rd gen 3S-G(T)E engines, depending on when it was made. Celicas had 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen 3S engines (imports to the UK and NZ got the 3rd gen), and the ST185 GrpA and ST205 Celica GT-Fours had the 3rd gen turbo variant.
Pretty common on lots of toyota engines of the era, not just the 3S family.
Thanks for continuing to post content guys, it's keeping us entertained and we really do appreciate it.
I love my CT21, ATS killed it with that turbo. Power is insanely linear
So much done in one vid.. awesome work Marty.. becoming a real mechanic after all these years..
At this point looking back, do you wish you would have just dropped the engine?
Fun tip about studs, the stud itself doesn’t have to be tight, it just needs to be threaded all the way in. The clamping force is applied by the threads when the nut is installed.
Hey Marty. Loving the MR2. Just a heads up on the state of that engine. Ive recently pulled one apart that looked like that and all the oil rings wear blocked not allowing proper lube on the cylinder walls and eventually the bearing. I would highly advise, although a bugger, pulling it out just to inspect the rings and the big ends. Ill send you some pics if you want!
Handy tip for refitting rocker cover when the gaskets are in place, because movement of the rocker cover can cause the gaskets to slip out of place. Find two long bolts of the correct thread, cut the heads off, and thread them into 2 holes used by rocker cover studs. Then you have a nice guide to drop the rocker cover on first time without any unwanted movement :)
Mogs good tip
Marty, your absolutely NEED to upgrade the intercooler! The stock intercooler can't handle anything over stock.
100% agreed. A chargecooler is probably the easiest way to go.
Most likely why he ordered a new one and has to figure out how to make it work (as mentioned in the video).
This was a very soothing video for the inner petrol head in me! The way things were cleaned and upgraded and improved and cleaned again....ahhhhhhh my OCD is at peace ... great work video as always!
