- One thing we loved about our trip to Santa Pod Raceway was the variety cars that were fast that looked like they shouldn't be. Like this old Volkswagen Bus, van, truck, or whatever you want to call it - we're still undecided. It has a billet, air-cooled, 3.0L rear mounted engine, it's shaped like a brick, and manages to crack 8 second passes in the quarter mile. Who wouldn't love that?

i never thought a vw kombi/ute with a vw boxer 4 cylinder would ever run 8s. Even with its bigass drag wheels, parachute, turbo etc, I'm still gonna call this a sleeper. Props to the owner. Cool dude with a super cool vehicle

My neighbor has one of these "trucks" all original but he won't sell it. I can't blame him cause neither would I.
I had several bugs when I was younger, being 61 now i recently purchased a 63 ragtop and another 68.
They're both Baja which isn't my favorite but I'm having fun with them.

Been going for a very long time the constant improvement to Santa Pod keeps me coming back as for the the racing from Pro Mod to Top Fuel it will put a whole new meaning to real performance
This dude was so humble my heart fell when the transmission or whatever went hope that he gets back out there racing
We will be back don't worry, it's a complicated fix, so might not be for another year though.

Fun fact a vw bus is more aerodynamic than a vw bug. It’s proper name would be a VW “transporter” from what I know. Here in NorCal we had Bugorama at Sac race way which is now closing down. All VW drags all day. Dad is a vw nerd have been around them my whole life. Such a rad drag single cab. Super rare rig
My favourite dull fact, a Baywindow VW is more aerodynamic than a Lamborghini countach.

thats almost as cool as the coolest transporter ever!!! that is saying alot because the RUF T2 vw bus is the coolest ever. this is actually tied now that i think about it. its a high honor in my book Bruce Canepa has a t1 with a full AWD 993 turbo driveline. can you tell im a porsche guy. vw 21 window with a rag top and chrome fuchs is all me. if i had this awesome thing id be in jail in an hour. extremely cool since i do love the truck style vanogan. aces build!! cheers

A bit of irony, I live in Omaha ... but I raced at Santa Pod in the 80s. My all time favorite track and I miss it VERY much !!!
I sorta want to know more about the 14 sec beetle and what’s been done to it! It’s easy to dismiss it as slow but go drive a stock one for comparison!
It's Jack's first car, he is 17 I think. He built it with his brother. Rubber Duck Racing is him
You don't really need any wild tuning to get a Beetle into the 14's, My current Beetle's run a 15.0@89mph (143kph) and its still a 1300cc. My old daily driver Beetle was 2007cc with twin 45 Carbs, mild headwork and mild cam (so around 150bhp), close ratio 3rd and 4th gear and it ran 13.7@99mph (160kph) and that was on stock 165/70 tyres. Tuned Beetles pull quick E.T's, but they just lack top end trap speed due to poor drag coefficency and 'relatively' low power compared to modern cars
VW Bus with a billet 4-cylinder 3L boxer on methanol. With big slicks, full tube chassis, parachute and a wheelie bar. Now that is something you really don't see every day! 😎🤟

Sucks the Air cooled VW racing scene in the US isn't what it used to be. I remember Bandimeres Bug In used to bring VWs from all over the US. Past few years not so much.
The recent Texas V The World event looked great and I believe they are doing more, you should check them out 👍

You should check out the big block in a VW bus that 1320 talked to when it showed up at a track a few years ago. Old man built it in 6 weeks or something. A daily driver and has a one to one or a two to one direct drive rear end set up. It’s a unique street machine.
This is not, and never was a bus
Its a pickup and has immense potential as a sleeper
One of the easiest vehicles to mid engine, resulting in a vehicle that actually handles better than original with a small block of any description
Lots of space and easy access for service and tuning
These have been around for at least 30yrs in South Africa and South America
400hp and some decent brakes makes for a great cruiser/sleeper
The looks on modern sports car drivers faces when you pass them on the highway at 120+ is too funny

Why? It's perfectly safe and the chassis and cage has been built with 170-180mph possibilities. Robinson Race Cars in the UK are some of the best chassis builders in the world.
Gotta love an old V-dub bus where your legs are part of the front end crumple zone.

Never been on a Dyno so can't be sure on the BHP, going on similar set ups, and what boost we run I would guess at about 700 🤷🏻♂️

im loving the classic VW appreciation recently! i have my beetle at 100hp at this point on a college budget and i want to get an 1/8 pr 1/4 mile time on it soon. i know it will be slow but man after driving it stock all through highschool and then doubling the hp, it feels like a rocket ship, the rear squats and everything haha! im gonna rip on this engine until i blow it then get a 1915 hopefully and really start making respectable power. this stock engine is begging for mercy
