@Dave Taylor, can the Netgear Nighthawk provide Internet to a smart TV?,..(like for example, can you steam live shows with it the Netgear Nighthawk through your channel apps, while live programming, using the Netgear Nighthawk)
@@AskDaveTaylor ok, thanks...I'm sure allotment would finish out pretty quickly, if I was just using the netgear nighthawk on a smart tv, that requires an internet connection, for any smart tv's ability to live stream, or, stream on demand, whether it be cable channel apps like the ESPN app, CNN app etc. or other smart tv apps for streaming services, like vudu, Netflix, Hulu etc, In which I do plan on using a netgear nighthawk for those purposes on my smart tv......but as you mentioned the bandwidth would be finished up in no time, unless it's proceeded with some type of cautionary awareness.....but If I'm using, the Netgear nighthawk for internet connection on a laptop, tablet, Alexa, ipod, etc. The amount of bandwidth wouldn't run out so fast on those electronic devices.
it's worth noting that this device can be ran with out the battery being installed so if you are in a place were there is mains power you can run it just off that and this will prolong the life of the battery over alll
My question is: I'm in a temporary location for a couple of months. Can this be my "daily-driver" to power my iMac, iPad, and iPhone without losing speed!
Possibly, but that's potentially going to be a lot of bandwidth so it might be pretty expensive over a few months. I'd not expect great Netflix streaming or similar either. Just the reality of this generation of hotspots, I think.
ANYONE know why I'm getting slow speeds?? I have a Nighthawk M1 connected to a Cisco Micro booster and getting 12 down and 4 up? The bars keep fluctuating from 1 to 4! I had AT&T reset the booster and it's been 6 hours. I only have 2 devices connected within 10 feet. Shouldn't need a router for 2 device's? This is my first time setting up and have not purchased yet. I'm in LA a nd a tower is about 1/4 mile away! Simm is AT&T no limit, no throttling, no cap! Battery is slow charging. 5hrs from 25% to 75%.
May 2021 ~ I think about a year ago NetGear unlocked it to work with other carriers, besides ATT. But reading online it seems it’s a hassle to get it working.
How about updating this video. It supports an entire network. I will link the video(s) using it as the access point. Also the 2 rubber feet pull out, it has external antenna jacks, works extremely well will with external antennas. Also seen several posts about the oem power supply will not be able to power it with multiple device's constantly hooked to it. They recommend using a 2.4 amp verses the 1.2 amp supplied. Might want to investigate it. We are planning to buy one in a couple weeks. We plan use netbuddy.co as the service. $60 4GLTE unlimited plan. Thanks for the review!
I pay 29,95 euros a month for 300 mbps 4G+ unlimited plan. Actually my ISP does not even have limited plans available. But I live in Finland, seems your ISPs have some catching up to do. :)
Going to pick this up this week since I just got a great new unlimited plan that includes 10 sim cards! Have you tested this with the external antenna?
If people read the comments, they will find it that he misspoke about the battery terminology. But he keeps being polite and answering the peoples repetitive question that he answered over and over. Some people are just really jerks about it. I just ordered the nighthawk, my plan will be with tmobile. I live near a tower I think. The 4g lte speed I get from my phone is already over 100mbs download and 30 upload. At times is even double those results. But with this device and no throttle involved. I think I will be pleased with the overall product. Can't wait.
Do you mean can you install ExpressVPN *on* the device? No, you can't install user software on the device. If you want to run it on your computer, sure, you can do whatever you want with the network connection.
I have a AT&T bundel at home. Can i use this Nighthawk to replace my wifi modem? Will AT&T let me replace their wired in modem with the Nighthawk? My goal is to be able to take the Nighthawk out as a portable wifi whenever i leave the house for my phone. The only home devices i have connected is a Google home mini, laptop and my TV.
You need to have a sim card in the Nighthawk in order to be able to get wifi. As long as you do that and pay for a plan, you can take this with you where ever you go. I took mine camping last summer
It is advertised as being able to be plugged directly into your home internet as a replacement for home WiFi, while also being able to grab it and take it wherever you go. Should work for what you’re saying because that is literally what it’s made for.
@@highkergaymer8301 . Hi. I just don't want two bills? I want to see if AT&T will let me replace the home (Bundled) modem with the Nighthawk and bill the same?
Does this work with Verizon plans as well? I already have Verizon and don't really wanna switch but this does sound promising as I've been looking for a hotspot device.
Harper Roah it will not sadly since first AT&T will not unlock it so using it at all is helpless even just on lte and even if they did unlock it you would only be able to use lte you wouldn’t be able to use 4g or 3g because Verizon is cdma and AT&T is gsm and those do not work with each other
Would you recommend this for rural folk who need to connect to the internet? Being that they need to connect to a cellular plan, how would one get around data caps and subsequent throttling?
Rural Internet is tough. I've tried these sort of hotspots and they've worked well, but they are dependent on a good cellular signal and if you're going to stream Netflix for some binge watching, you're going to go through a LOT of data. I'd talk to your cellular provider and see what they suggest. Good luck, rural's tough.
Dave Taylor I’ve been streaming off my throttled unlimited att plan just fine, but my hotspot sucks. The nearest dealer says throttling won’t be bad because there are few people in my area. However, my hotspot experience makes me think otherwise. I probably need an booster or something. Definitely, my situation is not unique and it sucks for rural folk
Would I be able to use this to play online on the Xbox and download or update stuff? I have good service where I live there’s a AT&T tower close to my house but I just don’t have WiFi so I use my phone hotspot but it runs out
No bro it will have a strict nat type so if you want to play any multiplayer your screwed even if your pulling 500mbs. No option to port forward or disable the firewall.
@@AskDaveTaylor it’s an app to answer calls for a work from home job. Sometimes I need to take my laptop on the go and just wondering if this would hold up to take calls on from my laptop, something like ms teams chat calls?

Ok so like. Im so confused on how all this stuff works. I live in a hotel. And the wifi is horrible. All i care about is being able to game online. Is there any way i can just have my own internet. Im having a really hard time finding a non confusing answer
A unit like this would help you out with basic Internet connectivity for email, etc, but it's really not designed for gaming. You'd have two problems; connection speed and the cost of going through so much bandwidth when you're live.
@@AskDaveTaylor i gotcha. Thanks alot I appreciate it. I ordered a WoW internet thing. Hopefully i can hook it up at the hotel with no problems. Yea i live just like Schitts Creek lmao
how do you use this as a media server? I have at&t and the paperwork refers to website that does not work anymore. I can only access the router thru the netgear mobile app
It's probably best to use this as a modem, by patching one of the LAN outputs from this device to the WAN input on a good full featured/media router. It has great radios built in but it's not a high end router at all.
@@jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285 I don't use netbuddy's service but I know the Nighthawk works with them because they sell it. Their service is $60 per month. I use Verizon's prepaid unlimited data in a jetpack. It is $65 per month by itself or $45 per month if you have a phone with them. I also have AT&T unlimited tablet plan for $29.99 per month that also works in this Netgear nighthawk, if you know what you are doing.
@Andrew eastwood Could you explain how I would use the att tablet plan with the nighthawk? I have the at&t tablet plan and wouldn't mind not having to spend extra money.
@@Tomgirl87 If you have the tablet plan and the sim for it, just put it in the netgear nighthawk. You have to change the apn to broadband. To do that you will have to look up the owners manual on the AT&T website. There are details about this on Reddit which is where I learned about it.
Anybody live in a travel trailer and have this thinking bout adding wifi for when my nephew comes over is it good for having google echo Netflix? Smart TV?
The biggest problem with using something like the Netgear for a streaming TV channel or online gaming is that those consume a huge amount of bandwidth and it would end up being a very expensive solution. I'd look for another option for when your nephew is visiting, honestly. Maybe ask some of your neighbors?
Actually online gaming uses very little. Streaming movies, especially 4k is a different story. I use my phone as a hotspot to play Xbox live and only use maybe 100mb after about 2 hrs of online gaming.
I don't mention how much data it has because the plan you buy is seperate from the hardware device, Mark. Check with AT&T to learn about your options...
Ah, probably not, actually. It would really depend on whether you luck out and get a strong, fast signal or not, but streaming (esp Netflix, etc) eats up a HUGE amount of bandwidth so it might well eat up your entire data plan in an evening anyway.
Dave Taylor we use AT&T and have a really good signal but our plan only comes with 15 gig hotspot really wish we could increase that, so if this router doesn’t give us much more than what our phones already provide a hotspot then might not be worth the time... I need an endless hotspot more or less
I am a tech who constantly travels and I cover most of the area you tested lol As I am getting tired of all the hotels seaming to give up on their internet, I was wanting to try something different
4 1/2 minutes in I share a speedtest score. Please watch the entire video if you are going to check out one of my reviews, I put a lot of info into 'em. Thanks!
Just about everyone gets 20-35Mbps no matter where you are. I have been researching these things and in Los Angeles and even Portland OR, that seems to be it. I am not that impressed by the speed, but the device is pretty amazing. For reference, I have the Sierra Wireless WiMax (Sprint's fake 4g) back about 9 years ago and saw these speeds. Meanwhile my S10+ phone sees up to 230Mbps in Portland, and around LA 50-180Mbps.
Yes....you do “have to say this” because not everyone is as versed in how these devices work, which is why we are watching TH-cam videos. Who do you think your audience is? Techno geeks? They don’t need you to give them your opinion about Gear. They are smart enough and proficient enough about what’s out there to draw their own conclusions from what they read on the specs sheet of the device. So, don’t insult your viewers a potential subscribers With condescending comments like, “do I really need to say this?”
5,000 MEGA Amp hour battery. LOL. It's like a nuclear power plant! mah stands for MILLI amp hour. Milli means "1/1000" . Mega means "1 million". You basically stated the power of this battery as a billion times more than it is. You could go 3 million years between battery charging! I calculate I can power my entire house at maximim power 24/7 for over 1,000 years on one charge!

Hey I have the nighthawk m1 but i am here in australia and here they call their network the 4GX its basically faster than 4G but not as fast as the 5G's 10Gbps i am in the middle of no where and i get 200 download and 20 upload the upload isnt that great but the download makes up for it but when you are at a tower that support the full frequencies of the device and there is not many people on that specific tower that must be what is happening right now... And they use different frequencies on the australian model then the US Model. I have a video on the speeds but that is somewhere else in australia because we got this to travel with (my family is traveling australia)
I would ask your local cellular network provider what's going on and what kind of speeds you should expect. Don't know much about Aussie cellular deployment. :-)
There’s a company called “OTR Mobile” selling these with unlimited data plans, and I know several people using it for gaming consoles. I’m looking for a cheaper source for the device
Effectively it is, though. What would be the point of already having a hot Ethernet plug and connecting the Nighthawk rather than using the Nighthawk as your Internet connection?
This Video is miss leading. It is not 5G at all. Its known as LTE advanced or 4GX or 4G+ depending on how it is marketed. It uses the same frequency bands as all other 4G LTE networks unlike 5G, which uses 6GHz Band and 15GHz band (in testing), Also it's a totally new specification. 5000 Mega Amp Hour battery? Face Palm..... You want to power a house with that box? Seriously dude, Get the Facts and Terminology right before you release your video!
Seriously, dude, AT&T calls it a Nighthawk 5G, that's what I'm going to call it too. And as for the battery, well, you're not the first to point out my gaffe. Que sera, sera. Learn to have some tolerance for those of us actually producing content here on TH-cam. Oh, and one final thing. It's "misleading", not "miss leading" :-)
Dave Taylor 5000 milliamp battery, it does support ethernet in/out, and at&t has a 500gb plan for $100 a month. How would you use that up in an hour? Not a bad video otherwise though. And are you the same Dave Taylor who wrote the book creating cool web pages with html?
I get the specs directly from AT&T, so it's possible they have changed things since the unit was sent to me, and data plans are constantly being changed. The plan I had was 5GB. 500GB is way better :-) And yeah, that was me a long, long time ago who wrote Creating Cool Web Pages with HTML.
That's a good idea but there are so many variables affecting the performance of an individual device, including variations in connectivity over time, that I'm not sure how beneficial that would be. Plus it would require me having a half-dozen devices which I didn't have when AT&T loaned me the Nighthawk for review. FYI.

So here is what you do, and you better be ready to commit. You call them, and tell them open your NAT to open, and as soon as they start the run around you hit them with this. Ok, well then cancel my service and close my account on all my devices and I will just go over to VERISON because they know what NAT type is. BAM fixed in 10 minutes.
@@arctxbushman lol that's great but knowing my luck they'll be like ok consider it canceled.

No only password protected.
I hope to use this in lieu of my satellite internet modem in a rural area, any thoughts?
Me too. Terrible options here in West Virginia with satellite and DSL only.
what does the dial bar opposite of the battery bar represent?
Not sure what you're talking about, Brian. Perhaps a visual indicator of how much of you data quota you have remaining?
@Dave Taylor, can the Netgear Nighthawk provide Internet to a smart TV?,..(like for example, can you steam live shows with it the Netgear Nighthawk through your channel apps, while live programming, using the Netgear Nighthawk)
Theoretically but that'd sure eat up a LOT of bandwidth. I would proceed with caution or you might go through a 50Gb allotment in a few hours.
Yes, but if you're going to always have it plugged in, why worry about battery life in the first place? :-)

@@Geo_Knows_Things "know the diff?"
@@AskDaveTaylor Agreed on the expense.
Will it work with other networks (Verizon)?
Doubt it, but check with Verizon to be sure: They might have their own version of this device from Netgear.
May 2021 ~ I think about a year ago NetGear unlocked it to work with other carriers, besides ATT.
But reading online it seems it’s a hassle to get it working.
Saw another video where you can purchase a monthly $20 unlimited/no unthrottled SIM-card! Anyone know if this offer is still available in 2020?
Look on eBay
How about updating this video. It supports an entire network. I will link the video(s) using it as the access point.
Also the 2 rubber feet pull out, it has external antenna jacks, works extremely well will with external antennas.
Also seen several posts about the oem power supply will not be able to power it with multiple device's constantly hooked to it. They recommend using a 2.4 amp verses the 1.2 amp supplied. Might want to investigate it.
We are planning to buy one in a couple weeks. We plan use netbuddy.co as the service. $60 4GLTE unlimited plan.
Thanks for the review!
How has that gone for you? I'm setting my parents up with it soon.
What type of external antennas will fit?
I pay 29,95 euros a month for 300 mbps 4G+ unlimited plan. Actually my ISP does not even have limited plans available. But I live in Finland, seems your ISPs have some catching up to do. :)
Agreed
do you think this will give faster connection on xbox than 1mb wifi?
I don't know what you mean by 1Mb Wi-Fi. Is that your download speed?
No cause it’s a strict nat type only

No it will have a strict nat type and no way to change it because it’s using cellular data
@Ben Lewis there are several on there for that price. What ebayer seller did you use?
@Ben Lewis I did see that last name. I think I will go to Best Buy and get the jetpack. I will know for sure it is good.
I am going to see if Best Buy has one of the Nighthawks for AT&T.
Would I be able to use this to play online on the Xbox and download or update stuff? I have good service where I live there’s a AT&T tower close to my house but I just don’t have WiFi so I use my phone hotspot but it runs out
Theoretically yes, but those are going to use a huge amount of bandwidth so it's going to prove a very expensive use case.
No bro it will have a strict nat type so if you want to play any multiplayer your screwed even if your pulling 500mbs. No option to port forward or disable the firewall.

You'll have to check with Netgear for specific bands, protocols and frequencies supported.

I imagine you can try it, but 1. It's going to eat up your bandwidth alarmingly fast, and 2. The throughput might be insufficient for good gameplay.
I got mine a couple weeks ago. Found it today on my table broken!
Price? Will it work in middle of nowhere?
$200. You can get it a Best buy or from AT&T. You have to be able to get a cell signal from AT&T to use it.
On YT, go to 'Big Family Homestead'. They do an in depth evaluation of their usage in the middle of WI. They have virtually no cell coverage at their place. But, check them out...let them tell you...you'll be amazed!
It can achieve 4g+ Signal?
Yes.

It works by creating a cellular hotspot and then letting multiple devices share that connection. Your home Internet is not part of the equation.

Dave Taylor ,
Thanks! We live in a rural area with no internet besides our phones... so this would be an option for streaming etc?
Thanks!
