Hey guys.. if you take the time to master this video all the other things he teaches will come easier. - It’s hard to get rid of the chicken wing without doing this footwork. - it’s easier to shallow out in the downswing when you do this footwork. - shaft lean at impact becomes way easier when you master the footwork in this video. Thank you again for this powerful video.
I love your videos. It is refreshing to see you acknowledge a weight shift or pressure shift to the right side briefly. It occurs even if we focus on weight forward. I've not seen any other s&t teachers explain that this DOES happen. It is brief and then there is a re-centering right back to lead side. Thank you.
I like how you show what it looks like when you do it wrong. That is very helpful. Bottom line is this drill when down correctly really shows a golfer how the swing is supposed to feel. Not hitting but swing. I have noticed there has been a big shift in teaching the golf swing. 1) Hip rotation and 2) start the downswing before you complete the backswing. Prior their was very little talk of both especially #2. It was really a secret that was never really spoken about. Both truly create the smooth effortless golf swing we are all looking for. Now if they could just putt.....
Hey Jonathan, I watch a lot of golf channels on youtube to try and help my golf game. I started golf 2 seasons ago at a 25 handicap. I ended this season with a handicap of 19. I want to say a lot of the videos you have made have really helped me understand how to swing a golf club. The addition to what someone does wrong in your videos helps a lot to help understand the lesson a lot better. Thank you for making these videos, I use the basis from them a lot out on the course and at the range. Awesome job!
Great explanation of not only proper sequence for weight shift but not opening the chest early in the downswing. This drill will definitely help me! Thank you!
As an S&Ter I try to keep my weight forward even on the backswing. As a senior what I find really helps is a slight pause at the top & then shift. I have a tendency to rush my arms down & early extend, so the pause gives me a better tempo & I'm less prone to early extend.
Looks great. I have this problem. I will try this drill on next practice. No ever mentioned the delay on the shoulder turn till after the left weight shift is complete.
Awesome videos. The way you explain things is exactly the same as my current coach is teaching me but he is only looking to change a couple of things per lesson so i don't have a million swing thoughts. However I have using your videos to supplement the coaching for a more in depth explanation (rotation/release/weight shifting) has improved my golf much faster then i thought it would. 4 lessons in and a lot of the habits i've had for 25 years are being cleaned up. Not only does the swing feel more effortless the dispersion is down, the distance is up and i don't feel super sore after a range session.
Love your videos, Jonathan. You haver a real knack of showing exactly what is happening in all the parts of the swing, both good and bad. And your style, or mannerisms, are very refreshing. There is a certain honesty and naturalness about how you speak and explain everything. Keep up the great work. I will be subscribing.
Thanks Jonathan , OLD guys will find Your step /step drill EXTREMELY helpful , having spent 40 years, intensionally putting a pause in at the top of the swing (as instructed in the 70's and 80's ). I'll give it 12 to 15,000 Reps. before 🤣😂 rejecting it ,out of hand. GOOD STUFF, thanks again.
Great content, Jonathan! I've been struggling with this so much with my wedges for a long time, synching up the weight shift with the start of the downswing, which typically results in my low-point being too far back (chunk!) I'll try to incorporate these ideas into my future range sessions.
That's very well explained, thanks for pointing out the areas of this drill that can go wrong, really helpful. You mentioned that the weight shift starts just before the completion of the back swing. May I ask if it reasonable to pause at the top of the back swing, weight shift then start the downswing, which is what I am currently trying to achieve.
Another great way to achieve this weight shift sequencing is to lift your lead heal in the backswing. Us old guys sort of have to do that to get a good backswing, but it has the added benefit of accentuating this weight shift sequence. Once you incorporate this into your swing, every swing become a weight shift reinforcement drill. You get immediate feedback if you shift your weights at the wrong time. Do it right and all feels in balance and powerful. Use the pressure of your feet (left heel and right ball) on the ground to rotate your hips into a perfect finish. Keeping left heal down throughout the entire swing is one of the most damaging teaching philosophies of our generation. Get some rhythm, lift your heal, and swing like Jack.
This is a nice video but I was also hoping you would cover which part of the feet (middle, heel, etc.) the pressure should be felt as it shifts throughout the swing.
Jonathan, what's your advice to someone who gets too much weight to the lead slide with a lateral slide, but does not generate sufficient rotation on the downswing (I'm open to weight/mass vs pressure distinctions if the problem lies in my misunderstanding)? BTW, welcome back from Singapore!
If you are someone who has too much weight on the lead side then you would need to understand how to turn around your center which will probably FEEL like you have more weight on the trail side than usual. I would recommend watching my reverse pivot video and also "the most crucial movement in the golf swing" these will give you an idea of a centred turn. I also have some good videos about weight movement in the backswing.
Another way to get this feel naturally is to swing a heavy object, like a kettle bell. Holding it in front of you, swing it left across the front of your body, then swing in right, then left, then right, over and over again. What will happen is that your weight shift will proceed the swing in any direction.
Are we sure this move should be incorporated into swings by high handicap golfers? I know all pros do this move but this seems like a move for pros and not amateurs. I tried this move for months but i’ve had more consistent striking with a slight gather at the top of the swing before i weight shift
The gather is fine. I think you mean a slight pause. But when you start the down swing, start it with the foot work in this video not your shoulders. I know what you mean though, but if you want to get better and unlock more consistency & power you have to start mastering this footwork. It may take a year to get it, but it’s worth it.
@@JayTakeProfits Gotcha, i still initiate the downswing with this move but a couple videos were showing how to start the move prior to the backswing even completing as most pros do. I need the pause
I dont follow a specific program but for a long time now I have worked on different body parts each time I work out. Mostly weights and also before and after stretches. Perhaps if more people really want to see some good exercises I can make a video about it
Actually, weight shifting and pressure shifting are two different things. Weight shift is a body mass movement. Pressure shift is kinetic movement, while a weight shift is a kinesthetic move, which can be seen, kinetic moments cannot be seen homemade measured
Yes, most people use them interchangeably but the fiest time I heard this it helped me a ton...I would hit good shots with what I thought was no weight shift so I spent months trying to get my mass right side.. then I learned about weight vs pressure and realize I was already loading my.right, pushing in with my heel and.gripping the ground, even tho my body mass didn't move much
Why not get rid of the timing of loading on to the lead side? Why not load the front from the start? Honestly this weight transfer stuff hinders most higher handicappers for a Looong time. I played competitive sports at high lever for years and i have never being able to time the weight transfer in golf. Although it should be an instinctive move, it is not for most. I suggest to load the front, rotate back and then push forward in the downswing. Jus make sure the left knee goes in to help with the turn not out.
You explained more of a stack and tilt type concept which can work but it does not produce the same power. It’s been measured that the best ball strikers have a movement of weight through their swing but the struggle that most people have is know WHEN the move weight because it is all correct sequencing. Doing weight shift correctly makes the swing feel much more effortless.
The topic NOT covered is the timing of contact....being in synch with the body turn. That is real mental aiming in action. Sorry....but all aiming is not just done with your feet...or an aiming stick...lol. REAL aiming is done with the mind, if a golfer ever wants to be truly accurate. So hard to find any instructor who actually addresses this point properly. Your mind knows the timing needed to get a shot to a certain place. Without that mental targetting, one is just hitting in a general direction.....and talk about timing has no real relevant context. What we see in these videos....is probably relevant to the driving range...sort of.....but really lacks important context for actually playing on a course, where accuracy is absolutely necessary to achieve better scores. And sorry....but you're not using an aiming stick on the course. Once you line up, you aim with your mind...and the more precise shot is done with precise timing between swing...and body turn....led by your mind's eye, in regard to exactly where you are hitting the ball. How about actually addressing that point??
The aiming stick is used for a visual for the viewers. Yes aiming is done with the mind but everyone always think they are aiming at a target but in reality are extremely off target… the actual method of aiming is what I was going over and how your aim affects your perception of the target which will then affect your ability to swing in a certain way
@@JKMGolf Ya...sometimes I think people just don't get that aiming is an active thing when you're hitting any shot....and just think that it's what you do when you line up your feet. So, they then think that when they line up their feet, they just hit the shot...rather than havng their mind adjust swing path in an active manner....in the timing between impact moment and shoulder/hip swivel. Ya....I get that the initial lineup can be flawed...but it also does not have to be super precise. What has to be super-precise is your mind-targetting, in concert with your swing mechanics. Like in any sport, it's your path of follow-through....that is your aiming path. Is that not correct?
There are a million golf instructors on TH-cam, but none are as gifted at explaining the process better than Jon. Love the channel!!

When you shift into the lead side, should you feel like you’re re-centering? Weight 45/55 or do you go directly from 90/10 til 10/90 in weight shift

You should do a video on course management for beginners
This drill will take you straight to tempo town once you get it locked in. Better contact and sequencing through the ball!

It looks like you land on your lead instep when deflecting/re-centering. Does this sound correct?
So important
great.
Is it a good idea to feel the club floating at the top of the backswing before you transition to the downswing
If by floating you mean relaxed then yes
