    Pandora was the first mortal woman, breathed into being by Hephaestus, god of fire. The gods gave her gifts of language, craftsmanship and emotion. From Zeus she received two gifts: the trait of curiosity and a heavy box screwed tightly shut -- never to be opened. But what treasure could never be seen by human eyes, and why was it in her care? Iseult Gillespie explores the mystery of Pandora’s box.
    Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by Silvia Prietov.

      The video omitted that Pandora was given a great deal of empathy. When she opened the box, she really felt all of the intensity of the world's shame, horror, anger, hatred, and all other dark and terrible things. She was devastated and only in the darkest hour, came the glimmer of hope. With tears in her eyes, she looked up to see ... Batman!

    I think that the more interesting question is why hope was in the box. Is it truly to ease the horrors she unleased, or is hope just another kind of horror keeping us from taking different actions?

    • @logos1.618
      @logos1.618 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, ελπις (elpis = hope) was in the same class of evils things in the box/jar. The question of why it wasn't released is quite an important one. You second hypothesis about hope being a kind of horror, I agree with. For hope ultimately makes one passive, there is no need to work for 'fire' or 'the arts.' Pandora's Box was a gift, humans are given problems to deal with and learn from, without hope compromising the pursuit of learning and action.

    • @haydenchan7060
      @haydenchan7060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why Elpis is in the box-well, it’s not just to ease the horrors she unleashed. Hope remained in the jar because hope will never abandon humans. We will always have hope even in the darkest times, even when Zeus’ mini horror army is wreaking havoc on the world. That is the true reason why Elpis remained in the box, which is actually a pithos, a jar.

    Pandora's box serves as a reminder of the importance of mindfulness and the need to think things carefully before doing an action. The story highlights the balance between hope and despair in life. On my opinion curiosity can be both a blessing and a potential source of trouble. On the other hand curiosity drives innovation, creativity, and personal growth. Curiosity motivates us to explore, learn, and understand the world around us, however, unchecked curiosity can lead to unexpected consequences and danger, as I've seen in the story of Pandora's box.
    The story suggest extreme consequences on tempering with the unknown, but Pandora's burning curiosity also suggest the duality that lies in the heart of human inquiry…
    The story will always remind us that, although bad things are happening around us, there is still beauty left the world and the only thing that we need is ourselves to help it to find.

    I read somewhere that Pandora's Box wasn't originally a box. It was actually a jar (pithos, in Greek). The object became a box in the story because of the Latin version of the story mistranslated pithos as pyxis (vessel), later became box.

    Some fun facts I've heard about this story:
    -Pandora was a gift from Zeus to Epimethius.
    -The box was a gift to Pandora on her and Epi’s wedding day.
    -Zeus made Pandora as a punishment, giving her the box knowing she would open it. Pandora was created to bring the punishment of mankind (Death, Disease, Greed, Sorrow, etc.) for accepting the gift of fire from Prometheus.
    Pandora opening the box was all a part of Zeus’s plans for revenge on man. Zeus always gets his way and his honor.
    Correction: Zeus didn’t create Pandora he ordered her creation from Hephaestus (the God of Forge), who was also ordered to chain Prometheus.

    in the ORIGINAL MYTH, Hope was supposed to be the greatest ill of all, because it gives humanity the delusion that they can affect change upon the world to lessen suffering, when in reality that ability was supposedly only the purview of the gods. (I.e. it make one think that they can challenge the threads of Fate, and even the gods are rarely successful in that endeavor.)

      I disagree. Like you mentioned, the gods themselves were subject to Fate. Their hope, in spite of their knowledge of this, and of their belief in an afterlife full of suffering, was almost an affirmation of their suffering. They found meaning in it. I'd it's not quite a delusion, but a rejection of a life without meaning due to Fate.

So she opened the box out of her internally given curiosity’s for released these disgraces out into the world. Yeah. And Pandora didn't open the "box" because she was curious. Women were the punishment for Men because they regained fire from Prometeus after Zeus took it away from them. And Pandora was only made to become part the humens (Men) and then unleash Zeus' punishment upon them.

    Gives Pandora the gift of curiosity.

    I remember reading that hope was actually a bad thing, that it gives the suffering the will to endure, just so that they can continue to suffer. Would explain why Zeus had it in the box.

  • @jonasraphael1401
    @jonasraphael1401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +228

    However this is not the full story of Pandora, you’re missing why Pandora was created and why Zevs gave her the box, leaving out the duality of hope as Zevs didn't place it there as a blessing but as hope is what makes life worth living despite all the sorrows in belief of a better time, hence making it the blessing of fortitude and the curse of self-torment

    • @TheCrippledCreeper

      I feel this is one of the most important parts of Pandora's story. The art is good but this retelling is lackluster, missing a lot of the symbolism for the sake of simplicity.

      The Greeks had quite an interesting view on life. Through tragedies, they showed that, despite their status as mere mortals in a world dominated by gods and fate, there was an underlying beauty to their suffering. Tis why I love Greek myths, oh so beautiful!

    It's said that hope is the most horrendous of all evils in the box as all other evils play with the body and the mind but hope deceives the soul and forlongs its suffering . Hope cause humans to hold onto this world and wait eternally for the better times that never come
    Or else I am just a edge lord

    • @ynkrock7
      @ynkrock7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Greeks did not believe in a happy afterlife, quite the opposite. If anything, their hope was rooted in finding beauty and meaning in spite of their suffering. When Odysseus found Achilles in the underworld, all Achilles hoped for was one more day on Earth, even as a poor farmer. He regretted his choice of choosing immortality through his heroics versus living a life full of inherent suffering.

    Great video! However, from all of our orginal Greek sources, it's Pandora's Pithos, a type of Greek jar, not a box. Pandora's Box is a mistranslation. Secondly, this plan was devised by the gods as a way to hurt mankind and blame it on Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother, as another way to further punish Prometheus for gifting fire to mankind, and to punish mankind for receiving it.
    This version of the story could possible exist, but it is very unlikely, and contains many modern additions. The Greek Gods were not viewed as benevolent, but merely reflections of reality. Ted-ed's versions of these myths are not accurate reflections of the greco-roman mythos, but they have animations so thats cool.
