No one online tells you what happens if you shut off water, leave water heater on (whether at a lower temp or not) and then the tank fails when you’re away. Surely this is a bigger risk than shutting the whole thing down

This is exactly the question I have. I did not get a satisfactory answer yet beside shutting off the tank completely.

I will be leaving my northeast home for 6 months this winter. In the past, I have put the heat at 62º, turned off the water at the sinks and toilets and put my Hot Water Heater on vacation mode. I am thinking this year I will turn off the water at the main valve in the house and putting the HWH again at vacation. Does turning off the main hurt the hot water heater at all? Thanks!

Why didn't you answer her question? Instead you gave her more questions. Explain to her why pilot or vacation mode would be best for her.

What about a 2 week vacation with nobody in the house?

Thinking the same for an upcoming vaca. May shut off water and vaca mode, and unplug water softener. Unless gurus suggest otherwise.

Long term house storage........If the air conditioning is not running in a home to pull humidity out of the house mold could develop on and or inside the walls. Mold in a house is the worst thing ever. The water heater should run at 125 F to prevent bacteria in the tank. Security systems should be running in case of theft. Home owners insurance should stay in place also. Auto insurance should stay current in case the cars are still in the garage and stolen or damaged. In the winter if the weather is severely cold let the faucets drip/dribble to prevent water pipe line cracks. One can not just shut down a house for months or years and expect to sell it with the possible damage when leaving it not running basically lived in.
