let' say I shut of main water to house, set my controller to low setting on water heater, and water heater fails that is all the water leaks. now, is my tank fire hazard? will the controller try to heat the empty tank. what is the consequences of that?

What about gas line? Should gas line going to appliances like oven be turned off ? Or its safe to leave it.

Turning the main water line off will not prevent damage when a pipe or valve breaks unless you drain your pipes prior to leaving for your vacation. As long as you leave water (under pressure) in your pipe, it will leak out and create damage if a breach happens.

When you shut off the main water valve, should the hot water tank valve be shut off too? Does the hot water need to be turned off at breaker? Tnx

you don't need to turn off hot water valve too. You can change your hot water heater to vacation mode but don't need to turn off breaker.

Some of the new water heaters now dont come with vacation mode. I heard it's best to keep as is & just shut off your Main because reducing the heat to the boiler runs risk of it creating bacteria & slush feeding it thru your lines when u finally turn on

@@rubedogg_619 : To be safe, turn off the heat to the water tank and drain your pipes. An empty tank will not produce bacteria. Only warm stagnant water left in the tank may cause bacteria.
