I am about to go on vacation for 1 week and my fear of turning off the main water but not my water heater is that my water heater getting burned up since there wont be cold water coming in. Its a gas water heater...is that not a concern?
Doesn’t matter if cold water isn’t coming in because no water will be going out. It will just continue to keep the water in the tank at temperature. A hot water heater doesn’t circulate water unless a hot water valve in the house is open.
Yes, it's annoying they don't answer that.. I was wondering if the water heater is capable of shut off automatically when it sense there's no water in the tank?
The water heater cannot sense a leak and shit itself off. If the water main is off and there was a leak unless all the pipes were drained you would still get some leaking but not to the extent you would with the water on. In March we left for 8 days and had a pipe bust in our slab. Not sure how many days it actually leaked but we had over &60,000 worth of damages. We just completed all the repairs 2weeks ago and today left again for 7 days and we shit the water main off before left.

@@ktt2062 what if there's a big leak in the hot water piping??? is that the reason to shut off the main, is to prevent massive leak just in case.

if I shut off the water heater completely, do I have to re-ignites the pilot? That's a lot of work.
