  • Episode #224 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
    Hello Friends,
    On this weeks episode I awake under anchor at Kaneohe Bay to the lush smell of the rainforest blowing into the cabin from a light offshore breeze. After a beautiful sunrise and some morning coffee I head over to He'eia Boat Harbor to pick up Kimberly Wood ( linktr.ee/Salt... ) , professional photographer and all around adventurer, to join me for some exploration of Kaneohe Bay.
    Our first stop was to check out the famous Sandbar at Kaneohe. The Sandbar is a large submerged "beach" or sorts that at low king tides is exposed but for most of its life it sits in 2-4 feet of water. It is a popular boating site with the locals and a very unusual experience.
    We went on to explore several of the countless coral reefs that around scattered around the bay and saw a great number of fish, a spotted eagle ray, and sea turtles.
    After dinner we did some night snorkeling and had some fun encounters with a schooling banner fish who kept coming around to check me out.

    Really pleased to see this sailor's face thaw. Smiling with his eyes, too. Laughing & enjoying his life, solo. Even though he did not plan to be alone. It makes for strength. Best Wishes to you, James.

    There are times when a portion of the sandbar is totally exposed (no water, just sand). When this occurs, it's like a football game tailgate out there. The number of sailing vessels, motor boats, water craft of all kinds and people at the sandbar when this happens is a party! BTW, I laughed when you talked about the fish being so skittish. I wonder why? I enjoyed this video. Night diving here is on my list of things I need to experience. Mahalo!

    Thank you for another inspiring video James! I live in the midwest but have been obsessed with sailing ever since getting hooked on Patrick O'Brien years ago, and I've only been in the sea once in St. Croix 2016. I've been working on a novel of my own for the past couple years where sailing is a big component and your videos have helped give context and demonstrative understanding about something that you are knowledgeable and passionate for. I cannot express how valuable your insight and love for the sea has been to me. Keep living this amazing life you've built for yourself and keep on doing what you do. Fair winds.

    The land breeze came in just after nine, softly at first, stealing across the water freighted with the rich fragrance of moist earth and flowers, tinged a bit with the smell of burning wood. And as it increased, the schooner stretched her chain and swung around with her bowsprit fixed on some flickering fires spread wide across the mountains. A halyard tapped, a dog barked, and under it all lay the low, melodious roar of the restless ocean grinding it’s teeth on the shore.

    That reef seemed very absent of fish and general sealife considering how healthy the coral looked. Your comment about the fish being skittish made me think that maybe since it was so accessible that maybe all the people have scared away a fair chunk of the sealife? Or is that not protected in there from fishing?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the reefs inside the bay don’t have as many fish but that might be due to its distance from the open ocean ? The reefs on the westside of the island have more abundant fish maybe because they are in the open ocean, I am no expert so not sure.
