I'm born and raised and still live on kaneohe bay...the sampan channel was dug by the military so the marine ships can make it in...the sand dug out was what kualoa beach park was built on and during the ww2 it was a reef runway ...nice video 🤙
Literally just found your channel about three hours ago. Suffice it to say I have watched three hours worth of your videos :-) very impressive James! We are beginning a similar journey on the East Coast
Thank you so much for sharing. My husband and I will be there in two weeks, to start our retirement adventure. We get to hang in Maui for a month, buy a sailboat ⛵️ Our bro is in Maui on a sailboat waiting for us. Be safe!
Great video! Was fun to watch - I grew up in Kailua and Kaneohe and back in the 1990s (highschool days) my friend and I would spend 99% of our free time exploring around Kailua and Waimanalo bay on our kayaks. My dad worked at Makai pier and we would also often kayak out to Black Rock etc. exploring and would also go out to Coconut island when I was taking a marine biology course at the UH. fun memories. THANKS for sharing
The start of the sampan channel for big boats starts at China men's hat ,your coming in on the main channel its a tricky dance as well as 42 patches of reefs are in this bay.
And people don't give a shit if they pollute this majesitc place we call home... I'm glad im able to see it with my own eye's before everything fades away.
Always a pleasure to visit your travels via video. One of my cousins and her husband bought a catamaran in Panama almost a year ago. They are experienced sailors. I think their plan is to sail forever more. Right now they are in the Bahamas. I totally love what they are doing with their lives. Sail on!!
Hey James-you need to take the red buoys to *starboard* when entering Sampan. As everywhere in IALA B, it’s red-right-returning. You saw those shallow depths only because you were OUTSIDE the channel! You’re lucky. My 7’ draft would have run aground where you passed-but I’ve been in and out of that channel many times with plenty of water under the keel. Stay between the red and green and you’re good.
Yeah that became more clear after I noticed the range finder onshore, either way the mouth of the channel is VERY shallow even in middle of the two channel marks
Just found your channel man. That was wild watching your 32 day journey. Now, here I am, eager to see what you do next. I'm grateful that you've documented your adventure. I'm currently kicking myself to get up and freaking do something. Keep on man.
Howzit James, I cannot think of Kaneohe Bay without a tip of the cap to Joe Starr from the yacht club. Coolest smart guy I ever worked for. Stay safe & Aloha.
Grew up on the bay, the sand bar hasn't changed much in 55 years. Watch that split between KMCAS and the island. You can get a continuous breaking wave that runs from the island to the cliffs, ask me how I know. Great memories, thanks.
I am really enjoying this Hawaiian chapter of your journey. I too sailed from Wilmington to Oahu in the late 80's. I found the islands to be mostly unhospitable to small sailing vessels. Of course, that may have been my lack of experience. Good to see that you seem to be enjoying yourself. Safe travels...
I worked a full time job in LA and slowly refit my boat, I bought the boat for $2400 in 2017. I have no debt and have very minimal living expenses. Nowadays 90% of my income is from TH-cam and I work jobs as needed to re-top up my savings.
@@SailorJames Thank you and sorry for all the questions; will try and limit them to 1 or 2 a video. Never known a sailor that did solo work in the open ocean. Big fan of "All is Lost" with Robert Redford. Now I get a chance to see the REAL deal. I find you very fascinating as a person to say the least.
Binge watching all your videos, great job. I’m spreading the word since the algorithm is a funny beast. Be safe. Dean
The sky at the end is like a Vincent Van Gogh painting - absolutely stunning!

Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I feel the same way picking up a mooring at Catalina. Looking at an island from the water is very different from seeing an isn’t from being on it!
I was like number 420! Kinda made my night it’s been a trippy day. Far out man…….✌🏼
Glad I came across ur page love watching this because I’m not able to do much adventures on a boat. Have severe motion sickness problems.
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I love your channel!

Thanks. You might have mentioned the range associated with the Ala Wai harbor channel.

I'm pretty sure you must listen to the new album from Diamond Head while sailing around Diamond Head. Cheers!

@@SailorJames If you enter at R2 instead of R4, it’s not too shallow.

I started hyperventelating when I saw 4.7 on the depth sounder!!
On the way out I saw 2 ft 😳
@@SailorJames - Oh snap is that under the keel? On the bristol I can't tell if the depth sounder is calibrated for the keel!

Much easier to go to the other end of the bay where channel is deep and marked well. How long you staying in the Bay?
Your tats are very interesting. What is the name of the ship on your back?
He's planning on doing a long video with regard to his tattoos
@@noblsht A marine environment.
Have you ever made a video how you afford to do this? Is it from TH-cam, cause this is a dream of mine to sail the world but wondering how you're able
