As I am not a seafaring person, it does spark a memory, I think my worst “passage“ was when we were driving back to denver from LA after coming down from SF with Matt Bonal in his car when the transmission went out and we drove the entire distance no higher than 2nd gear in his manual transmission car….. I remember crawling thru Palm Springs and it smelled bad in the car from moldy clothes wet from the ocean. You remember that? It was horrible…. But one of the many great adventures

My worst passage was going just around the corner from Benicia to Sausalito in the San Francisco Bay in our 1981 Catalina 30... it was new to us and our first passage. It was over propped (the good news was that it could push through chop fairly consistently even at low RPMs), the lines were all fairly old, the auto-pilot hadn’t been calibrated forever and couldn’t hold a straight course, and we were motor sailing with double reefed main into 35 knots through San Pablo Bay the majority of the trip. You may count it as good that the tide was with us, but it was also against the wind, which means there was a pretty constant tall chop we were going through, making it a very wet ride on a boat with no dodger. Lol, this was my GF’s first sailing trip. She wanted to sell the boat as soon as we got in, but stuck with it luckily. We refitted that boat to a very wonderful condition, and enjoyed some fantastic experiences on it. We’re getting ready to sell it, and we’ve now got a 43 ft. James i sailed from heliewa to fanning island in the line islands in 1991. On my 30 footer Fanning is a magical paradise. Try to go to palmyra if you can. I missed it and regret it.
I have been thinking about sailing to Palmyra first but it will be downwind of the other islands so not sure I want to beat for days to reach Fanning after that. Looks awesome though

Saw your reply below about Kaneohe, hope you get to the Sandbar-if not done already great place to pull that rudder-anchor backwards to the sand, secure and drop it out. Used to do all my work there-just stand on the sand, the deep drop off is your friend. Great anchorage..That haul from the westside back to the Ala Wai is a haul, I get it. You going to do other islands? Great places to visit, but tough sailing. Let me know if you want some ideas, spent years in a small boat doing island hoping. Good to see a youtuber doing Hawaii, so many don't come there, tough to get too, tough sailing when you get there.

Thanks for another interesting vid James...... BTW....until I heard your explanation, I was wondering why you didn’t sail (tack) to generate the necessary power (to overcome the sea state). Now I wonder why you would risk going out cruising when your rudder remains so vulnerable. The temp fix is perfectly fine for local cruising and probably would have been fine for more abuse but I have enough experience to know there is no reason to test the limits unless necessary and this just being a slow passage and not a dangerous one didn’t warrant testing the limits
Fair enough......I’ve followed your adventures (for a long while) and respect your experience and knowledge. And nobody knows Triteia like you do. Ok, you asked for it .. well, this might not be my worst but it comes to mind: I lit out for Two Harbors from Oceanside. I had no autopilot and a wheel steering system in my Islander 30 at the time. I was even more ignorant about sailing than I am now and wasn’t at all aware of the fact that the transmission of my Volvo MB10 was practically bone dry. I stopped over at Dana Point to catch a couple zzz’s in the western anchorage. It was crowded but I dropped a hook anyways. Woke up bouncing off a big ketch. The captain of it was a salty dog and seemed to take a liking to me and wasn’t too upset. He was railing at some other boat that was close but not hitting him. I pulled up anyways and lit out for two harbors at 3:30 am. Got about halfway and realized I was making like 1/10 th of a knot. My transmission had given up its ghost. This was probably 7:30. I figured I’d wait till the wind picked up about 10 ish and sail in to the island and deal with it all then. And this was the one of 4 days a year that the wind doesn’t blow till the afternoon off the coast there. I bobbed around watching boats head to Catalina for maybe 5 hours. Had a few beers, saw a few sharks…. Eventually the sky cracked in a spot or two. Saw a couple blue streaks. Then a patch here and there of ripples on an otherwise glassy flat ocean. The patches filled in over the course of an hour. My sail flapped and flapped and then filled. I was making one, then two, then three hen four and then five knots. I looked up and I was headed staring back to Oceanside. I figured it was the Ocean Gods taking me home so I held my course. Made it to about 3 miles from Oceanside, then the wind died back down to zip. Called my dad and he came out to tow me in. That was a long day. But like your experience with the overturned dingy, sometimes the ocean throws you a bone !! Peace :)

You should change the title to "dodging giant ships to get to Honolulu" or something similar to promote views. I barely wanted to click based on title, but I know your content is generally good quality, but you need to entice those new viewers.
The funny thing is as I was typing this comment you literally talked about dodging 2 submarines(@9:31) so it's not click baity at all. I really like you as a sailing channel and just want to see good things for you. Your long time fans won't mind and it should yield you some existential growth, which is also good for long time fans as that will net you more income, keeping your sails fuller, longer. Either way, keep up the good content, the first video of yours I watched was your Cali-Hawaii trip. I dream of living in the Caribbean on a sail boat one day, so I envy what you get to do right now. Good luck and fair winds out there.
I’m so tired these days of videos titled based on a 5 second clip that happens half way through. In my opinion, that’s a recipe for viewer disappointment. I like watching this channel because it’s the subject matter I’m looking to see, so getting me excited to (in this case) see a video of dodging navy ships and submarines for a couple min in what is otherwise a long/hard/boring passage is a misrepresentation of what it’s mostly about. Tons of videos try to make the title the hook, and it just leads to disappointment when the video doesn’t live up to the hook.
@@shaneriehl223 but for the vast majority of youtube, and to make the algorithm work, sometimes it just be like that. You still get to watch quality content, it's just a little more appealing to viewers who haven't watched any videos from this content producer.

that thumbnail makes you look a bit like Capt. Barbossa from POTC
If you had a 6hp tilt-up outboard instead of the Yanmar diesel engine I doubt you could complete that passage with 15 knots of wind on the nose and some choppy waves.
Heheheeh diesel is 420🍻🍻🍻🍻
I wonder if while you were in Hawaii you decided to meet your twin Paul from Tokin Daily
😂😂🤣 lots of laughts.
Sept 2021- Getting the bristol back to Shelburne ship yard. 12 miles - 9hrs beating into it. Lost motor - sailed a big tack out, realized I was going to run out of daylight light. Then I realized I was going to run out of wind! Fired the motor half way through made it back over. Since I don't live with a cell phone, I went to the Cumberland farms to call my wife to let her know I was ok. Never again will I beat into it to make a haul out date.
Talk about the Tonga Volcano.
How do you learn something like this? I have the opportunity to buy a 28ft weekender v8. it sleeps 8 shower bathroom all that. But the knowledge you must obtain to do something like this is unheard of. I lost my parents at a young age im 24 now, if i could do something along the lines of what you do in ten years i would be honored. I really look up to people like you
Best to team up with experienced sailers .... Learn to crew on different Sailing boats, find out if you can adjust to seasickness ..also learn from the experienced sailors who have been living aboard for years on U-tube there are a few single handers and couples who have crossed oceans and circumnavigated.
Watch what breaks and what has to be done to stay afloat.. and how to deal with damage control.
Find out about Currents and tides .. navigation and planning for journeys. You also have to deal with a lot of laws and paperwork outside of home territories...but thats travel. 😉⛵ Check out a young Dutch guy called Hubb and his girlfriend and the old Pearson he bought and rebuilt in a South American inland port town.

You should change the title to "dodging giant ships to get to Honolulu" or something similar to promote views. I barely wanted to click based on title, but I know your content is generally good quality, but you need to entice those new viewers.
I don’t do clickbait titles. This video is a passage video that isn’t wildly exciting but shows the real life of a slow passage
