Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: Why So EXPENSIVE??

  • The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is one of the most well-rounded smartphones we've seen this year, managing to provide competitive zoom levels without a unique telescoping lens. But in making a phone with all the bells and whistles, does Xiaomi do enough to justify the asking price?

I see all these people who are so much surprised or even angry at those Xiaomi and OnePlus pricing moves, and who are praising the iPhone SE for its lower price tag.
Let's clear things out, first: I'm not justifying Xiaomi and OnePlus for their price increases, as it's certainly bad for consumers when prices go up, but just accusing those companies like they "betrayed the user" is a clear mistake, and probably comes from not trying to see the full picture.
Let's be honest, there are manu things and variables into play, here, and I don't want to say that my opinion on the matter is an actual truth, but I'm trying to make some assumptions based on objective informations.
First off, let's start from Apple.
Apple has probably been among the first phone makers to heavily increase the prices, if not THE first to do it.
They were able to get away with it because they had the performance and optimization crown for a long time in the smartphone market, they had huge R&D budget, but they also kept their brand perception on high levels, as they became synonym of reliability, quality and design.
Android phone had hard time to compete with Apple on the higher spectrum of the market, especially to the eye of the common not-so-consciuos-buyer consumer.
This is why Apple got away with the price increases: their competition could not put Apple completely in the shade and some consumers, who saw Apple product as status symbols, welcomed the price hikes like an increase of exclusivity of Apple product.
By doing so, though, Apple opened some space underneath the higher end of the smartphone market.
By making iPhones so expensive, Apple allowed Android makers to charge more for their flagships, giving them more resources to put in marketing and R&D: Android makers could now create higher quality products, market them as true iPhone competitors and they increased their prices too.
But Android makers had still a disadvantage when it came to brand impact and loyalty, and that's why they had to take some risks and push on the bleeding edge of R&D.
There's no perfect Android Phone, but on many aspects there were iPhone competitors in the Android space that did something better than Apple.
For example, the first 2 Google Pixels had incredible camera, like the Huawei P30 Pro. Many Android phones had better batteries, better screens, a more modern design. Apple, though, had always a dependable and complete package. And this is even more true with the iPhone XSs.
But nonetheless, products like the Galaxy Note 8, 9 and 10, the Galaxy S10 and S20, the Pixel, all have born. At higher prices, though.
Many companies, especially those one coming from China, saw that shift in the market and put themselves underneath.
That's how the "budget flagship" was born, actually. OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo...
They just offered good packages, with few corners cut here and there to keep an aggressive pricing strategy.
They gained resources, fans and market shares.
Looking for higher margins, they started to push the limits of what people saw as "budget flagships" and increasing prices.
They could do that because the more known flagships were still increasing prices, allowing Xiaomi, OnePlus and other to still offer arguably a better deal while increasing prices with every iteration. But they were also removing those things that justified the lower price.
Looking for higher margins both OnePlus and Xiaomi decided to finally put some effort in the camera department and try to compete at the true high end of the market. They now have both the brand recognition, the fan base and the budget to do it, and there's no actual reason they should not try, from their point of view.
Moreover, at the same time, the actual low end of the market was getting better and better, quite fast actually, and some conscious buyers actually decided not so buy a "budget flagship" and save even more: they still got a good experience, so why not?
This is also one of the reasons why the "budget flagships" were actually pushed higher in price.
Let's talk about this "lower end" of the market.
Redmi phones by Xiaomi got so much affection because of their prices and characteristics, and Xiaomi decided to exploit this "afffection".
Xiaomi and OnePlus want to portray themselves as big players in the flagship market, and they actually somewhat are, but Xiaomi also chose not to leave the more budget market behind and they differentiated their strategy.
While Xiaomi phones got better but also more expensive, they made Redmi an entire standalone lineup.
With Redmi (and Pocophone, let's not forget that) they put themselves back in the "budget flagship" market, with products like the Redmi K20 and now the Redmi K30.
Now Xiaomi is trying to do the budget-friendly player and the high-end-player at the same time, and they could make it work.
OnePlus is trying to do the same thing with this OnePlus 8 release: they finally got to flagship prices and refined their phones accordingly, but they also tried to satisfy the budget buyer with the OnePlus 8.
The problem with OnePlus is that they've been pushing harder than Xiaomi the "we are the best budget choice" button, and got too stuck in the "flagship killer" idea. Moreover it's hard to find the balance in the "budget conscious" segment, now.
The main problem, now, is that you don't need flagship specs anymore to make a good user experience: Snapdragon 765G + UFS 2.1 + 6/8GB LPDDR4X + 1080p 90Hz could do just fine.
    You actually don't need Snapdragon 865 + UFS 3.0 + 12/16GB LPDDR5 + 1440p 120Hz, but those things bring a significant increase in price when included in a phone.
The whole idea of the "budget flagship" is old fashion, now.
As Google Pixel 3A demonstrated, you are better off trying to offer a balanced configuration with a good camera.
To get the "budget flagship" you usually have to sacrifice on screen, build quality and photo quality, but now it makes more sense to throw every spec to the wall (OnePlus 8 Pro, Mi 10 Pro, Galaxy S20, iPhone XS) or dial everything down the right amount, especially processor and other stuff like that.
The problem of the OnePlus 8, I feel, is that it doesn't feel neither "meat or fish": it tries to portray himself as a flagship, but has too many compromises over the true flagships. But they haven't dial down specs enough to let a lower price make sense.
The Pixel 4A might have more fortune.
Please, stop saying that it's disappointing seeing those companies incresing the prices of their flagship, and just judge if they're actually able to offer a sensible option at that price tag.
If you are still interested in the "budget flagship" think, look at Realme and Redmi brands. Otherwise you'd be better off with a more balanced product with a better camera.
iPhone SE looks kinda odd in this market, but actually I believe that Apple is trying to disturb Android phone makers in the mid-range market to prevent them from getting too large market share and push Android makers to reconsider their strategies in the low end.
I don't believe that those phones will change anything in the higher end of the market, though...

I will just say that xiaomi made a stupid move. Just with pricing policy.. last year the MI 9 started at 500€ ... now they are asking for xiaomi mi 10 ..1000€. And lets look at Oneplus: Oneplus 7 pro started last year at 860€ and now for oneplus 8 pro they want 1000€ .. It seems to be a reasonable price in comparison to previous years.. not like xiaomi they literally doubled their price and that is insane .. At least in my opinion. You can not compare Xiaomi and Oneplus pricing .. Xiaomi is just Insane .. if they realease a 1000€ smartphone in 2022 .. than it would be better.

The thing is that the new snap SOC is soo expensive that manufacturer have to increase the overall price for the 5G. I think that qualcomm goes in the wrong direction : I'd rather have a good smartphone with great LTE capabilities for less than 1k than a smartphone that has to cut corners somewhere to be able to reach that 1k price point. It's the same with OnePlus 8 pro that had no other choice to accept the fact that Qualcomm has quasi-monopole over the whole market of high-end flagship chips. The only company that does it right is samsung with their exynos soc. Granted they are not as good as the qualcomm ones but if they're much cheaper than the flagship soc from qualcomm and about the "same" features... I understand why google went that way and made agreements with Samsung

I remember in 2016 my flgship Xiaomi Mi 5 only cost around RM1500(350usd).They said their smartphone is cheap bcoz they got some revenue by displaying ads on their own official Mi Apps like Music Player, File Manager, etc but now 2020 look at that price damn lol. At least they should remove the ads on their apps...

I'm using the #oneplus7t , which unfortunately misses HIDE NAV BAR FUNCTION whereas the Pro model has it, I could really clean up my home screen with that, and gain screen real estate in many situations, I wish they would activate it!

Every Xiaomi has an App Drawer. It's just not enabled by default. Go to "Settings" - Tap "Home Screen" - Tap "With App Drawer". That's it.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Well there is an app drawer or at least in the Poco f1 which also runs miui 11....
    And the price is about €770 8gb/256gb... and €807 12gb/ 256 gb
As well Xiaomi phones fall fast in price too!
as well the camera blows the oneplus 8 pro out the water if you check techzg video of the comparision!

You forgot to mention a few things -
    1. Dual symmetrical speakers (front and bottom), you didnt touch base on that
    2. The phone is upscaling 6k video to 8k, it's not native 8k
    3. Pixel binned to 27 mp and NOT 25mp
A bit of work before the video review could have helped :)

Still don't understand why people cry for the app drawer. It's just a dump site for apps that gets very messy very quickly. Just organise your home screens. Never needed it in iOS and never needed it when switched to MiUI. Waiting for my Mi 10 Pro to arrive.

Companies like Xiaomi and One plus, got ahead because they provided good products at a reasonable price, becoming a good alternative to Samsung and Apple. But if there's barely any difference in price, why should someone chose them over Samsung or Apple?

Anyone else face the same problem with Xiaomi 9t Pro? 🙁
My Xiaomi 9T Pro has problem with uploading video in Instagram as only the first clip is successful, the rest goes error. I read in Mi community, there are some people who face the same problem and posted there, but the company doesn't reply. I contacted Xiaomi thru their official Facebook page, but still haven't replied me.
Therefore, to those who is considering to buy the latest Xiaomi should make sure there is no the same problem. I feel so disappointed cuz I use IG a lot but can't upload video 😔

I can buy this phone here in Canada for $720 CDN. The Oneplus 8 Pro I would go for costs $1549 CDN. Different specs I know, but with how I use a phone I wouldn’t notice a difference. So Xiaomi’s price still looks pretty good to me.
And I love this camera setup - it’s perfect for the pics I routinely take with a phone.
EDIT: My bad - I was thinking of the Mi NOTE 10 Pro. Xiaomi has got to come up with more distinctive names for their devices (and stop taking marketing lessons from Intel and Nvidia). In Canada the Mi 10 Pro can be had for under $1400 CDN, so it may still be a better option than the Oneplus 8 Pro. But for $720 CDN I would probably still go for the Mi Note 10 Pro instead.

      Mark
I goofed - I was thinking of the Mi NOTE 10 Pro, which could be bought for $720 CDN from pdaplaza.ca
The two phones are very similar design wise (including their names!) but they do have different specs. The Mi 10 Pro can be had for under $1400 CDN (same site), which may still make it a better buy than the Oneplus 8 Pro depending on what you are after. But for $720 I would still go for the Mi Note 10 Pro for my personal needs.
You can compare the two side by side at gsmarena.com to get a better feel for the two devices.
