As an Egyptian, this video made me so so happy!! You guys are unbelevably respectful to our culture and country. Im happy you took your time to get used to it. I admit it sometimes does get really hectic, even if you are born and raised here ahaha. I understand that many westerners arent accoustamed to that, but you guys appreciated it and got to see a whole different side. You are always welcome here!
Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave such a sweet comment. It's quite a bit different, but that's part of its charm. And thank you for the invitation to return. We plan to do visit again for sure! -Judy
@@UncleMMM If you think the original poster should not have thanked us, you may be right. Tourists should be respectful of the places they visit, but they come into a country with all sorts of preconceived ideas and opinions and aren't all respectful. You don't have to look any farther than some of people's comments on this video, unfortunately. So I can understand and appreciate when someone has considerate words for people who aren't trash talking their country. Kindness never hurt anyone, and paying a compliment is a nice thing to do. And we reciprocated. It lifts up everyone and costs nothing. -Judy
I got an evisa and one on arrival and they had the same exact price! Both were very easy to get but if you get an evisa in advance… you don’t lose any time at the airport… around 10-15 minutes…
@@rosariomartinez820 There is only the Egyptian government official website that offers e-visas. Everyone else will uncharge you. But when you're searching for the official website, it specifically says that there are a lot of fake sites and not to use them. At that point, it's difficult to know what's real or false, so spending a few minutes at the airport getting a visa on arrival isn't a bad idea. However, I do have a link in the description for the official e-visa website. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I went to Egypt and had a smashing good time. I can't wait to go back. We traveled from Cairo to Aswan. We got our Visa in the airport for $25 cash, easy peasy. A little bit of advance research and you can find out all the things you need to know. We used Memphis Tours and that was a fantastic experience. Do look where you walk; to avoid an unpleasant fall. The sidewalks, pavements, and tourist sites are very uneven with holes and broken paving slabs. Also lots of stairs. I disagree with eating street food. Do set your own itinerary. Don't waste your time at sites you're not interested in. Your hotel may be able to convert a small amount of dollars into Egyptian pounds, until you can get to an ATM. Some vendors are happy to accept U.S. dollars but it's harder for you to decide if you're overpaying. Better to have a selection of Egyptian pounds. You'll need lots of small denominations for tips.
We are so glad to hear you had a great time. You are right about most things. I don't actually recall many stairs, BUT we did have to go up and down from the curbs, which kept stopping and starting. Not sure if that's what you meant. The key to street food is only eating it when you are getting cooked fresh food. We didn't have any problems with it, thankfully! We have an entire playlist from Egypt if you want to relive your travel experience. I'll link it below. We spent a night in Aswan's Nubian Village, took a Nile River cruise, a hot-air balloon, and spent a month total between Cairo/Giza and Luxor (outside of the cruise). -Judy Egypt series: th-cam.com/play/PLNT98lWfwdF1WcH9GxfK4ngH49MXf5oOv.html
@@FindingGinaMarie we visited some of the Coptic churches in Cairo, which entailed stairs. I guess that stands out in my mind, because my legs were so sore and stiff from camel riding. There's another tip; don't ride a camel unless it's a bucket list item. 😉
You are right about that. And we did also encounter that with the couple of mosques we visited (and the Great Pyramid and walking through the pyramids overall). LOL re riding a camel. Back when we were much younger we visited Chichen Itza, Mexico and rode a camel there. That experience was a one and done for us as well! -Judy

Thanks for this excellent piece. Cairo is not for the faint of heart. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience, but can be challenging. So many first timers post content based on their experience, but the negative experience or perception they have is based on ignorance or bias. You’ve given good advice, showing respect, positivity, and empathy. Love what you’ve done here; you’ve got a standing Cairo dinner invite from our family 😊
Thank you so much, Amber! We truly loved our time in Egypt and would be happy to reach out the next time we visit! We do feel like Egypt expanded our travel experience in an important way. We are glad that we didn't have to rush in and out and actually had time to live among Egypt's people, hear their stories, and have a rich experience beyond the archeological sites. -Judy
Sorry but its not bias or ignorance to experience harrasments on the streets, men and children who grab your behind, try to touch you all the time, even when you covered yourself totally with head scarf and long skirts. I was shocked how rude and ruthless many of them was. Ofcourse there was nice people, but the rudeness of the majority was overwhelming. And the feeling of always having to be careful and protecting yourself from being scammed. So no thanks, never again
@@j.katyLevin.2684 I'm not sure why you mention bias or ignorance. We certainly never suggested that harassment is okay, condoned it in any way, or tolerate it in any way. What we have said is that we did not experience it in any way. We didn't say it didn't happen (or doesn't happen in every part of the world, because it does), only that we never saw anything even close to the issues you mention. I'm sorry you had issues. By all means, do not return if you didn't have a good or safe experience. However, we think overall it is safe and you are no more likely to get scammed in Egypt than any other touristy place where a small subset of people want to take advantage of vulnerable people. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I have lived, worked and travelled to 25 countries in the world, nothing as dirty and annoying as Cairo. And exuse me, the harrasment can not be compared to any other country i have been too, Egypt is really on a another level. Besides, to understand my answer, you should maybe read the top comment in this thread, it was a reply to where they write thst any negative comment about Egypt is ignorance and bias.
@jasminkatyjohnsonj.2684 The comment referencing ignorance and bias was not at all speaking about sexual harassment, which is why I didn't see a connection. I'm not sure what those 25 countries have been, but every country is unique and although some are similar, part of why we travel is to have different experiences. The traffic was next level, but it was interesting to experience. And spending time in Cairo helps me to understand people who grew up or spend significant time there. If you consider touts to be harassment, I agree it can be annoying, but I never felt unsafe. It was people trying to make money to support their families. They weren't actively trying to work, so I'm not going to be unreasonably upset by it. Sexual harassment is a different thing, but I'm also not going to dismiss an entire country of people because of it. -Judy

In September 2023,I flew to Dubai for an event. But while in Dubai ,I have decided to fly to Alexandria and Cairo. Omg…I was so impressed by the generosity of host family in Alexandria. And of course I visited CAIRO. I was blown away by the beauty of the Pyramid and so impressed by a tourist guide who took my videos and pictures without pay. I tried to tip him but he refused and so I took his number because next visit I will surely contact him. While in Alexandria, I was so in love with the beauty and vibrancy of the city. As if I don’t wanna leave immediately. The Egyptians are very welcoming and friendly. I ate the best foods and omg..I just love their bread. I have never tasted a bread like that. I usually fly to Dubai 2x/ year because of business and I will surely bring some friends in Egypt again. To Alexandria Egypt….I LEFT MY HEART IN ALEXANDRIA ! It’s a city that never sleeps . I love the people ,the foods and everything ‼️❤️ I will be back‼️ I live here in San Francisco and the first time I laid my eyes here in San Francisco,California…I was in love with it’s beauty and moved here since 2008.

Glad you mentioned that there is a lot of construction. Tremendous work is being carried all over Egypt. If you move to the suburbs or the 20 new cities you will see a completely different picture. overall the people are great and the country extremely safe, most of all you will see archeology and museums the likes of which cannot be compared. Where else can you touch and enter the great pyramid!
We think that construction is a hassle but a necessary inconvenience for progress, so we try to be patient. It's great to hear that construction is happening all throughout Egypt. And all the temples and pyramids, etc. all were basically construction, so we definitely can't complain! You are right, and we are grateful to have all this amazing history. This is such a great and helpful video. You guys are so lovely and sweet and are great tourist. What I mean by that is that a lot of tourist often forget that they are in a different country and the rules, language or whatever are different than back home. The tourist needs to adjust and not the other way around. I'm planning to go to Egypt in a couple of months and can't wait. I've seen some more videos on your channel that can prepare me. Thank you !

I visited Egypt in 2006 and loved the whole experience. Egyptian people were kind, welcoming and gracious. The food was fabulous. The antiquities were spectacular, even more so than I had imagined they could be. What a rich culture and history! I have to support the videographers’ warning against renting a car and attempting to drive around Cairo and Giza. Traffic chaos is too mild a description. I needed only a few minutes of watching the erratic tornado action of Egyptian traffic to confirm that self driving is best left to tourists with a death wish.
We feel the same about everything you are saying. We were so proud of ourselves for walking across some of the very busy highways like the locals were doing, but we knew we were putting our trust in complete strangers not to kill us! But yes, so many fabulous things to love about Egypt! Did you happen to catch the rest of our video series from our month in Egypt? Have you been there more than once? Very enjoyable video. One thing we found in Egypt that we hadn't expected was that the Uber drivers also prefer to be paid with cash - you can select that option in the app. On our first few days there we were wondering why the Uber drivers weren't accepting our trip, then we were told that many of them won't take credit card fares because it takes too long for them to be paid by Uber. Once we switched to the 'pay with cash' option everything was much more seamless. Happy travels!
This is interesting. We didn't see that option when we were there, so we can't really speak to it. We didn't use Uber very often, but when we did, we had no trouble with it. Thanks for watching, and for the tip. What an absolutely gorgeous couple! WAW! Thank you both so much for the advice.I would also add to just go with a tour company/ group and have everything planned by that company. Egypt is absolutely huge and very difficult to manouver., even for Egyptians. Even as an Egyptian, i just book a tour company and focus on relaxing, enjoying and understanding the huge amount of lore behind my country :P
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. As full-time travelers/TH-cam creators, we can't really travel that way, but everyone who took the Nile River cruise we were on did it that way. Egyptian Tours Portal arranged flights from the US to Cairo, transportation from the airport to their hotels, the cruise, and some follow-up activities others' took, such as to the black/white deserts. Such a great video! I was impressed that you noticed the "language of the horns", because this is absolutely real, and it's called that in Arabic. I would, however, note that not every street vendor is completely safe. I spend a lot of time in Egypt, and food poisoning from street food is common. I don't really recommend eating meat from the street, but things like falafal are great.
Thanks so much for watching! And you are right that not every street vendor has safe, hygienic food. It wasn't our intention to convey that at all. But we don't think you need to be afraid of them so long as you take into account some smart food safety tips like eating from vendors that are busy, eating where locals are eating, and hot, fresh food versus food that's been sitting (among other things). I had no idea about the language of the horns being an actual thing, but I can completely believe it! We have a full series from our month in Egypt if you are interested in checking it out. We take a Nile River cruise, a hot air balloon ride, spend time in Luxor, and even spend a night in the Nubian Village in Aswan. -Judy 🎥 Egypt travel series: th-cam.com/play/PLNT98lWfwdF1WcH9GxfK4ngH49MXf5oOv.html

Great information! We are definitely out of our comfort zone and will be going to Egyp as a family with our 7 and 8 year old sons this year, so we have a little anxiety about it. The good thing that puts us at ease is the kids are enrolled in a school, so all the guides have been vetted by the school, which makes us feel better! 😀
What an incredible experience it will be for your family! Cairo is MUCH more chaotic than Luxor, but after Cairo, nearly anything will feel easy peasy! Will you be staying on the East Bank of the Nile while you're in Luxor? -Judy
@FindingGinaMarie We are actually staying on the West bank! We are going with a group of traveling families and our kids will be attending an alternative type of school together to learn all about Egyptian culture, art and history. The school is located on the West bank so all the families stay close by plus I hear it's the more relaxed side. Egypt is definitely a bit of an intimidating destination, but we are excited to explore it and I'm going to binge watching all your videos on it!
We really loved the West Bank. It is quite real there, but very lovely. The area where we were didn't have a lot of hotels, but our Airbnb was beautiful and spacious and our host's local person was attentive and helpful. We had such a special experience. We felt very safe, if it helps to know. We HIGHLY recommend the guide from our Nile River cruise. I'm including his info below. He was a genuine, passionate guide (Egyptologist), and we absolutely had the best time with him. What does it say about him that we still keep in touch?! -Judy Our guide: Mahmoud Nour +20 102 6979554 (let him know we recommended you-we are not affiliated in any way, but we'd love to have him succeed even more, and I'm sure he'd love to help you with whatever you might need!)
As an Egyptian, thank you for your kind words about Egypt and the Egyptian people You are welcome at any time and anyone who comes to Egypt is welcome I wish for anyone to have a different experience and visit the home of an Egyptian family. Try to get to know an Egyptian person through travel groups and Facebook groups. You will get to know Egyptians easily and you will become friends in the future. All of this does not require you to pay money because the Egyptian people are by nature generous and want to honor the guest, whoever he is. Who is he ❤
Thanks so much for watching and for your suggestion. I think the difficulty with what you're suggesting is that an American (or other foreigner) isn't sure what's expected or how to behave, etc. It's a tricky situation when you are unfamiliar with someone's culture. As a solo in Luxor just after arab spring I was a sitting duck as was so empty! I lost my photos of Cairo but generally had a good time..worst was getting a taxi.. if a man is with you it definitely is better there!❤
Are you saying you had trouble getting a taxi? The part of Luxor we were in did not have many tourists, and I was on my own for my night walks where people would come out of the woodwork to ask if I needed a taxi (or a felucca ride, or a tour, etc.!). I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that hawkers weren't around when you needed one, but I'm sure frustrating if you were trying to get somewhere! They are very eager for tourists now. There's been one thing after another preventing tourists from visiting there. I'm sure it was an unsettling time for you when you went. I wrote about my experience here, but times definitely are different: findingginamarie.com/articles/i-see-you-every-night
Ahhh! Yes, I can only imagine! Hopefully not rip you off, but definitely vying for your business in a way that could easily feel uncomfortable. Everyone wants to be "chosen"! We were fortunate that our Airbnb host had a local Egyptian to help us and also provided taxi service. I think we got a fair deal each time, but we really only needed to get to/from the airport and to the train station.
Thank you for being who you are, respectful and accepting of other cultures ,that is rare among western tourists.you are a really kind and emotionally mature couple ,even the things that bothered you ,you pointed them out in the most respectful and tactful way.love from Egypt .

Why I would NEVER return to Egypt? Filth, sexual assault, dysentery, roaches, mosquitos, flies on everything, unbearable heat, scammers, rude men, money changing is a PAIN! We were very modestly dressed and were still grabbed by men!
I'm sorry that this was your experience. We did not experience any sort of safety issues so we can't weigh in on them. The water isn't safe to drink and you have to be careful with fruit and vegetables that aren't peeled. We also never had trouble with ATMs and getting money. And we encountered flies and mosquitos and heat in the South of France and in Italy. We thought that people were very kind and welcoming and would visit again. But sexual harassment is never okay. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I was BEYOND careful with the food and water. I cannot Rx for myself as it is illegal. When we returned to Mina House , I asked for a MD and thankfully received antibiotics. I was traveling with a licensed tour guide in a group. I was NOT by myself and VERY modestly dressed. The men will grab as you are a foreign woman and are fair game. I did NOT have this issue in beautiful Italy. Traveled to Egypt as I have been studying KMT for approx. fifty years, plus studying their music. Some of the men were very kind. Sadly those were too few.
Before we visited Egypt, we met with a travel doctor who prescribed antibiotics, which we took twice daily for a month, and that seemed to work for us. We also only ate street food when we could see them cooking food fresh. I feel like stomach issues are something you can encounter in many places throughout the world. As far as Italy, I'm specifically referencing mosquitos and flie. Someone in the comments recently suggested an over-the-country medicine you can get for stomach issues. Not all men will grab you. I walked alone every evening in Luxor and had no issues, and men were always respectful. I'm not sure who the tour guide was that you weren't better protected, but I'm very sorry you encountered that. The good thing is that if you did not feel safe, then you don't have to visit again. I think bad things can happen anywhere in the world, not just Egypt, but you don't have to return if you were traumatized. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I went to a travel MD prior to my trip and asked for anti-malarial as well as antibiotics. He did not want to Rx the ABs. I told him they are broad spectrum and we are most likely targeting e Coli. I am a retired doctor. It was the fault of our tour company. We realized this. There were too many issues. You were lucky you were not grabbed in Luxor. Men did pass remarks, seemingly feeling free to do so. Please stay safe on your next trip!
We are so happy to hear that you had a great time! Did you do a Nile River cruise or spend any time in Luxor or Aswan? We are glad you came back safely. I know there's a lot happening near that area right now. -Judy

20:13 as an Egyptian, I highly advise everyone to visit egypt during Ramadan. Not just for supporting us, but it is that time in egypt where the atmosphere is stunning and the cities are 10x prettier. It’s like the Christmas vibes in western countries but with that oriental touch

I just got back from Cairo - we live there part time in an apartment in new Cairo and my husband is Egyptian. Most of what you say is correct, but I just wanted to point out respectfully that prices have gone haywire in the last year and as I write now in December 2024 taxi prices and everything else are completely different after a couple of financial re adjustments of the Egyptian pound due to economic situations changing. So just be aware these prices are wrong.
This is so helpful for us to hear, @DianeAntoneStudio. I hope the adjustment in prices is beneficial to the average Egyptians living there (and not just helping the rich). We heard sad stories about how infrequently people were able to eat chicken because the price for them had skyrocketed. We've checked prices periodically over this past year and saw the value of the Egyptian pound sinking even more. Are you able to share some prices that our viewers can more likely expect to pay when they visit? Is it stabilized, or do you think there's still more ups and downs that the Egyptian pound will have to undergo? -Judy

We are going next week to Egipt. It has been for a long time in our bucket list. Great tips and advices. Thank you very much for your work! It's never in my travel plans to sleep in Airbnb in neighborhoods like the ones shown but I guess there's a market for everyone...
It was not in our plans, either. We had just started traveling full time shortly before we booked this trip and had no idea about where we had booked. As an Egyptian this video made me so happy! Egypt is a lot more than Cairo, Giza, Luxor and Aswan. You should definitely visit Sharm el Sheikh, Sinai, Dahab, Hurghada, Marsa Matrouh, Gouna, Soma Bay White desert, Black desert because you will definitely experience the diversity in Egypt. NOTE: EFFECTIVE October 1, 2023, Canadian citizens will not be able to obtain a visa online before travelling to Egypt. Canadians will be required to obtain the visa from an Egyptian embassy or consulate. HOWEVER, after December 1, 2024 Canadians will again be able to obtain an electronic visa before traveling or upon arrival in Egypt.
Yes, that's right .. but for Candians only, and the Candian government deserves it! 🙂
Can Canadians get the landing visa as mentioned in video?

-Judy

-Judy

-Judy
As an Egyptian myself, I confirm that this nice couple have given very, very good advice.

Scam levels are different in every country.Thank you for taking time to help us make informed decisions and enjoy Egypt the best❤
You are right @Beedee664. We have found scammers in many countries that we've visited. Their methods may vary, but we know that there will be people everywhere who take an opportunity to take advantage of naive, tentative, uncertain, and careless travelers. We enjoyed our time in Egypt and want to make sure it's clear that our purpose was to let people know what could happen so they could be more savvy travelers and not at all recommending that they avoid Egypt, which actually is a country we really enjoyed! I'm on the reverse Ramadan fast. From sun up to sundown I eat, then fast during the night I intermittently fast.
That sounds like a perfect way to eat, and I'm so happy that works for you. We actually try to do the same. If we have breakfast and an early dinner, we're golden. -Judy
I think Judy missed your joke. She's quite serious. But many of us laughed.
@gregdrivesdriver5104 Maybe it was meant to be funny, but I also think this actually is how many people eat. Claudia mentioned intermittent fasting, which is a real thing, and you may have seen that it's actually how we eat. -Judy

As an Egyptian, I thank you for being so understanding of the local culture, economic conditions, and habits.
Even though I live abroad, Egypt is still my favourite destination, and not only for it is my homeland, but also for its diversity and warm feelings...
Egyptians are very "open" to other cultures as well...
Another additional piece of advice:
To Egypt, try not to wear "revealing" clothes. It is not an appealing look in Egypt...
Thanks for watching. I wore long pants and long sleeves the entire time we were there in mid February/mid March.
I love the people ,the foods and everything ‼️❤️ I will be back‼️
I live here in San Francisco and the first time I laid my eyes here in San Francisco,California…I was in love with it’s beauty and moved here since 2008.
We are so happy that you had such a wonderful time in Egypt. We missed out on Alexandria, and it's one of our big regrets. You are right about the delicious bread in Egypt! We are glad you could also experience Cairo. We have it on our wish list to visit Egypt again and we definitely will include Alexandria on that list. What do you think of Dubai? People have been encouraging us to visit, but we worry about it being a rich city catering to the wealthy versus someplace with authentic, local people. Are we missing something?
You might also enjoy the rest of our series from Egypt, which I will link below. -Judy

-Judy

I wish for anyone to have a different experience and visit the home of an Egyptian family.
@@FindingGinaMarie no they were everywhere trying to rip me off lol as so few tourists it was an experience!
Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words. We loved our time in Egypt, but we did not know what to expect before we arrived. It was a bit of a culture shock, but once we spent a little time there, we came to love it. We hope our videos will help people to know what to expect so that their early days wont' be an adjustment. I guess we shouldn't have gone on that first carpet tour. We now have ten!
I love this! Some of them are truly intricate works of art. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour, and it was tempting to not buy a few souvenirs for family, but it would have been cost prohibitive to mail them. We took a few pictures and have our memories of it. But so special to walk across your memories every day! -Judy
This was a very sweet, thoughtful and practice review. Very nice :)
Thank you so much for watching. We loved our time in Egypt. It took a little bit for us to be comfortable, but once we got acclimated and accepted that things were different, it was a brand new game. We spent a month in Egypt, and we have several videos you might also enjoy from there. -Judy

20:13 as an Egyptian, I highly advise everyone to visit egypt during Ramadan. Not just for supporting us, but it is that time in egypt where the atmosphere is stunning and the cities are 10x prettier. It’s like the Christmas vibes in western countries but with that oriental touch
We've been told to visit during Ramadan, if for no other reason that people still need to work and they can't do that if tourists avoid that time of year. What happens that creates a special atmosphere? Also, you might enjoy the rest of our videos from Egypt, so I'll link them below. -Judy

-Judy

We have many awesome places you have to visit next time
You're welcome any time
Thank you again ❤
We had a lovely time in Egypt, and although we have cautions, there is so much we enjoyed. We want people to know what to expect, but hopefully how much fun we had also comes through. You might want to watch our other videos from our month there. -Judy

I came to Hurghada about a year ago. Can confirm all the points! Very safe, very polite and relaxed people and you should definitely try local food. Sometimes it is hot and spicy, but if it is too much for you, there is a lot of something different
We've heard lovely things about Hurghada, and it's on our list of cities to visit when we return. Thanks for sharing your experiences! You might also want to watch our full series from our month in Egypt, which I've linked below. -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie Great thanks for your lovely reply, Judy! Sure will check this video of yours and many more! Have a wonderful day!
Thank you so much! We hope you enjoy them! -Judy
You guys are introducing a decent respectful, helpful and fun content 👏
Thank you so much for watching. We weren't prepared for Cairo before we arrived, and we don't want anyone else to make the same mistake. Once we got acclimated, it was an experience and we loved our month in Egypt. You can catch our other videos from our month there at this link below. We took a Nile River cruise, took some independent archeological tours in Luxor, visited the Nubian Village, had several tours in Cairo, and even took a hot air balloon ride! -Judy
