Shoulder Arthroplasty (with osseointegration) | Procedures

  • Shoulder arthroplasty is a surgical procedure used to relieve the pain and loss of joint mobility associated with arthritis. These conditions involve loss of joint cartilage, and wearing of the bone, causing restricted mobility and pain.
The procedure involves exposure of the shoulder joint and removal of the damaged or arthritic parts of the humerus and glenoid cavity. The glenoid cavity is resurfaced with a polyethylene prosthesis. A channel is created in the humerus bone to hold the stem of the metal prosthetic. This stem is impacted onto the humerus bone, anchoring the prosthesis. A metal head is attached to the stem. Contact of this porous metal with the bone stimulates osseointegration, forming a strong, direct bone implant interface, without the need for cement. This operation results in pain relief of the shoulder joint.

I refused it after numerous doctors told me not to do it and everyone I know who had it had more problems afterwards than before!! Happy I listened and just had the arthritis scraped off! I'm not a doctor but one thing I know about such procedures is that no circulatory nerves or muscle are modified during this process. Just think of this procedure like a knee replacement/any major fracture where it's the bone joint that breaks apart but no major damage is applied to the nerves which carry all the motor circulation systems (after all the main purpose of the bones is to provide structure to our body to maintain a posture.)

I had this done, must say pretty painful recovery. I lost some motions of my shoulder. Still not sure if it was worth having this surgery.

This operation rarely increases range of movement. But is likely to improve pain.
