  • @ale16horizon

    The best thing about this game it that you were able to go out of bounds in every map and it was rather easy to do. And you could then walk for miles and miles

    • @BrokenOpus
      @BrokenOpus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      IDK the game kind of got ruined when I did that first thing in the game just by walking away, ruined the illusion it was a big open level. After finishing the game though it was fun to find secrets.

    • @HenryTownsmyth
      @HenryTownsmyth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BrokenOpus yep. It wasn't open world at all. Couldn't swim, would drown, couldn't scale a 2 foot high obstruction, it would eventually lead back to the only path available. It has whole lot of nothing.

    • @deebonglord3209
      @deebonglord3209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@HenryTownsmyth how or why would you swim in the frozen and irradiated waters of post nuclear russia? All of the maps that allow you to fall into water are frozen to temperate as best. I get what you're saying about wanting freedom but the devs clearly intentionally chose to use the water as an obstacle instead of a playspace, and as a linear story in an open environment the game definitely benefits from its ability to control your movement as it exploits small crossings and boat docks for exciting enemy chokepoints or mutant ambushes.
      And this is less important but.... are you actually upset that your character climbs back onto land instead of letting himself drown hopelessly like a baby in the tub? Drowning seems like kind of a questionable benchmark for you to judge open world games with lmfao.

    • @planescaped
      @planescaped ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@HenryTownsmyth And it is better for it. All these vapid, Ubisoft-esque open world games these days are dull. Give me a crafted linear path with some wriggle room any day.

    The part with the dark ones points to the fact that they were gonna have them show up in Novosibirsk, but didnt have the time, all we got was a quick glimpse of the baby dark one watching us. They did mention in a previous game that they were gonna find a city with little to no humans

    God I LOVE the Metro series of games. Honestly the series has some of the best, if not THE BEST post-apocalyptic atmosphere. It's one of the few games that I reply just to enjoy its setting. The dark tunnels, the eerie sounds, the makeshift settlements, it's all so good.

    I've always been greatly impressed by the first-person animations in _Metro._ They're always super-detailed and realistic compared to what you see in other FPS games, but I'd assumed they were made by working some poor animator to the bone! It seems like they were able to accomplish this by using motion-capture..? Surprising, motion-capture is commonly used in games, but you still don't see first-person animations to the quality of Metro very often.

    • @peoduction6068

      @@peoduction6068 That's just false. Cutscenes for example are most definetly motion captured, that's one of the reasons you see Artyoms full body. It's WAY cheaper and faster to mocap and place the camera on the characters head than to hand animate everything. It's not like motion capture is expensive, technically you could do it with Xbox kinect so why wouldn't 4A use it.

    another good video from snipey. :)
    1:43 im idly curious what would happen if head rendering were turned on for the player -- if we'd see the same face as in the ending, shown at 16:33.
    the way shadows usually work is that before you render the scene normally, you first render the scene "from the light's perspective." if the light can "see" an object, then it should be shining light on that object. if the light can't "see" something, it's because that object is behind another object or behind the light. things that the light can see should also be brighter if they're closer to the light, and darker if they're further away. so, you render an image -- "shadow map" -- which indicates what the light can see.
    then, when rendering the scene for real, we can take any given surface, on any given object, and use math to figure out where (as in what pixel) on the shadow map that surface would be, and how bright its pixel would be on the shadow map if nothing were in front of it. we can compare this to what's actually on the shadow map, and this allows us to know if the pixel at that spot on the shadow map is brighter than this surface would be -- that is, if there's something else in between the current surface and the light: something in front of the current surface from the light's perspective. if so, then that "something" should cast a shadow on the current surface, so we don't light the surface.
    which means that in order for the player's head to cast a shadow on the ground, _there must be a head_ in the scene. there's no major fakery here; there's a 3D model for the head; it's just that the game is choosing to render the head only in the shadow map. only the light can "see" the head, and there is a part of the ground that the light can't "see" because it's behind the player's head. and because we know there actually _is_ a head, it must be true that if someone knows how to tamper with the game in the right way, then the head could be made visible.
    of course, it might be that no one knows how to tamper with it in that way

  • @WafflesASAP

    The fact that in some scenarios your full body is animated and in others you essentially "float" in lieu of normal leg-driven locomotion makes me wonder if - at some point during development - there was ever an intention for the user to be able to see their player model in third-person in some capacity.

    • @WafflesASAP
      @WafflesASAP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shcdemolisher I think the game does just fine being first-person-only, and given the light horror/suspense elements, I think not being able to see your body and the space around you from a third-person perspective heightens the tension a little bit. That said, I just can’t think of any other reason why they’d spend the money and take the time to animate the player model so thoroughly if they knew from the outset of development that we’d never see those animations.

      It's common nowadays to animate first person cutscenes with motiom capture. The cutscenes where you see Artyom's body are mocapped and the camera is placed where his head is. Dying light 1 uses this same technique, the final fight is really detailed even in third person because of that. It's cheaper and faster than hand animating the animations.

    The lights inside the cube might be for activating and deactivating lights. You can turn off lamps and stuff in game for stealth, so its possible those objects don't actually emit light. They might just have a light emitting blank object parented to them that exists in that cube ready to be put in any light emitting object when you get near them, and ready to be sent back if you turn the light on that object off. It's probably better for resources to have a couple lights always on somewhere than to have every light emitting object checking if you're near them so they can be activated.

    My guess for why there is all that stuff out of bounds is because they “clone” all items where they are in gameplay, but everything is loaded a thus calculated once to save resources.

    I'd love to see one of these videos focusing on Terminator: Resistance. Sure it might not be the best game ever made but it has some lovely, intricate environments

    I remember when I first got exodus on my Xbox after it came out and I got to the volga level and I was curious how far you could follow the rail track that you arrived on and I followed the track all the way to this bridge and when I approached it the geiger counter started sky rocketing and I thought for sure it was a kill barrier by the devs to stop you from escaping bounds but to my surprise I just walked straight through it. IDK if the kill barrier wasn't working or if it was even intended as a kill barrier at all but either way I felt like a real hackerman. I walked for a couple of minutes until I found the edge of the world and a bunch of T-posing enemy models. I was amazed at how detailed everything was so far from the intended bounds of the map and in a section that I don't think was even visible from the boundaries.
    After I got bored of staring into the abyss I followed the edge of the map and found that you could walk around amongst all the low LOD trees and foilage and "distant scenery" which after a point dipped into the volga river and yet again to my surprise I could walk straight into the water without dying. Obviously in hindsight the water just has a kill barrier on the shore. I spent another god knows how many minutes exploring under the river until I had scaled the coast and was right up under the rail bridge at the end of the level.
    I wonder if it's still so easy to escape the map. Unfortunately my PC won't run exodus and my xbox is dead so for now I'll never know.

    This sort of Dev room is actually reachable, via a rail cylinder but it takes some practice to get there without falling to your death. This is also the only location where you can get the flamethrower that is only obtainable in the “two colonels” DLC.
