      @@VonnSaidYes I have the V6 (3.3L, 290hp, AWD). It’s been pretty reliable except for the AC compressor which started failing (quick fix, not very expensive). Over than that it’s been pretty reliable, capable, and livable. Does everything it has to without much fuss and can take quite some abuse.
      Engine, transmission, and drivetrain are all solid even after 8 years in Lebanon’s absolutely horrible roads and drivers. (High rpm Cz of elevation changes, constant shifting Cz of constant acceleration/deceleration, all the roads are as wavy and rough as the ocean in December)

    The Kia also has a locking differential - not sure about the Pathfinder. But that wasn't mentioned and locking the diff. would certainly make it more competitive in the mud and snow.

  • @MonteComeau
    @MonteComeau 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Can I ask why you didn't use the locking rear differential on the KIA? And turning off the traction control that is made for highway driving...You are doing off road tests without using the off road features offered by manufacturer. I own the 2015 Sorento and it makes a huge difference.

    I test drove several SUVs including the Pilot and the High Lander and in the end I bought the Kia Sorento. The Pilot is a little bigger with more cargo space but I don't need it. The High Lander is made to be better off road so the ride is harsher and it is more expensive. I just want to get through the Ohio winters. I'm not mountain climbing. For price, options, comfort and power, the Sorento beats them all. I got the EX AWD V6.

    Sorento for mine. Ground clearance is the deal breaker on your test. I have a 2011 Sorento (diesel version) and it's ability off road is surprising. Traction control off. Diff lock on. A bit more aggressive tyre tread and you have quite a capable SUV. A very nice on-road machine as well

    For this piece, I feel the Sorento is the best. The only way to know for sure though is to get identical tires on both vehicles and standardize the testing by using cones to mark start distance and end distance. Overall (and I'm biased because I own the SXL Sorento), I think the Sorento is better.

    at 14:05 you said "the wheels won't spin" implying that you wanted them to. well if you'd switched off traction control (because at 9:00 you said it was "on") you would've allowed them to spin. having TC on explains why you lose power and momentum because it inhibits the engine as soon as it detects wheel spin which is ok on a level surface not on a steep muddy slope :)

That man can’t drive. My personal driveway is steeper and worse condition than the last hill climbed. I turn traction control off and hit the locker button and mash it to the floor. I would have been air borne at the top of the hill, ha! I’m sure with the right driver the Pathfinder would have done better too.

      Chris Cockerham sorry man, me and the wife just got through test driving several of the kia's along with a few other makes and one pathfinder, Kia has certainly come a long ways over the years. Hence the interest, but fails in comparison to the pathfinder by a large margin, the interior in the Kia is pretty nice, but just isn't at the same level of quality as the Nissan.

    I am in the market for a 2wd sorento, wont be off roading though.
    Mainly for family and friend outings, people hauler and camping. The ride is pretty nice. As for this review, I think that driving the pathfinder through the dirt dug out the hill for the kia, speed also was a factor. I think both levels of performance were about the same though. I havent driven the pathfinder but opt for the sorento because of the styling, features and warranty. While the pathfinder may be more outdoorsy the kia is probably more stylish for city going. Then you come down to Cost.

      Depends on how much extra, if its only 1 to 2 inches you could probably get away with manually adjusting the factory suspension (depending on the suspension), but if you want to raise it a lot more then it can become costly, but always do wheel realignment after adjusting your ride height.

    After owning 2 older versions 1991-2002 of the Pathfinder I would say the the kia performed exactly as expected amd the Pathfinder embarrassed itself. Nissan should have named it the Nissan Roadfinder. What used to be a true SUV is now just a sad sad blend in with the rest crossover.

    Traction control can be your worst enemy off road. Try turning it off next time, both vehicles probably would've performed better. The manual shift mode on the KIA also could've helped keep the engine in the right power band to traverse those grades. Does the KIA have the same Dynamax AWD system as my Sportage? If so it should also have hill descent control and rear diff lockers.

    • @Mr.ThomasP
      @Mr.ThomasP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes but these two things car+tires are not separable and the capabilities of the car depends from the tires so you can not test the car and his full range of capability not even compare to other cars and then give a objective opinion ( its like you will have a super fast computer i7 pentium and for HDD you have a 5400rpm not a SSD and then you will tell the computer and the i7 is sloooow and not capable - you know what i mean ?) and that does not mean that you are doing tires (or hdd) testing....you had to compare the tires on the cars to do tires testing not the two cars on a shit tires.

      Even with better tires you would get much the same result. These cars are all based on FWD platforms. They have some sort of output shaft to the rear, but to keep these overgrown family sedans from oversteering, the rear wheels only get a bit of torque. If the hill is too steep, too much weight is on the rear tires with not enough torque to push the car forward. The front tires just get light and will spin even with more aggressive tread.

    • @jorgereyes7198
      @jorgereyes7198 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      davetek490 I disagree. Yes most AWD vehicles perform just the way you explain, however the new pf has a locking diff and distributes power equally to all four. As the owner of both AWD and 4WD it's a big difference

    • @davetek490
      @davetek490 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jorge Reyes That's a center locking diff right? If front and rear are open, the min you can expect is one front wheel spinning and one rear wheel spinning. Again one rear wheel may not be able to to climb the hill. But a locking center is better than most awd for keeping momentum.

  • @tinker1148
    @tinker1148 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave, if you would disable the traction control on every vehicle you test here (to keep it fair) you wouldn't lose engine power (and thus momentum) when going up those hills.

    Honestly I don’t think you need a Honda pilot I think you need a knowledgeable driver with a little more experience. He makes two attempts at the hilltop and acknowledges both times he just didn’t get enough speed. I also noticed he was not turning the steering wheel left and right climbing the hill to grab fresh traction which would have helped considering these are not off-road tires by any measure. I’m certain If both vehicles were equipped with more aggressive tires they both would’ve been fine climbing those hills.

    Both vehicles NEED to have the SAME off road tires to be really fair. In this video, both SUV's couldn't make it on one hill, but the Sorento looks a lot better in my opinion. Go Kia!

    not sure how "fair" it is to give one vehicle 3 chances and it still doesn't make it up. And then he conveniently takes himself "out of the competition" and let's us decide who won. Ummm...clearly it wasn't the Kia bud

    • @jaa4742
      @jaa4742 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Subaru's are horrible now. Don't buy. My 2014 Forester engine burns oil, gaskets leaking and Subaru won't fix even with warranty. Their class action lawsuit for the same problem allows an engine to burn a quart of oil every 1200 miles and that's considered normal. A svc manager admitted as of the 2014 and later, they're not built to last anymore due to pressure of making them more fuel efficient. He says to buy a Subaru for safety, but not for reliability. Yes, it will make it up the hill, but be prepared to only keep it a couple of years.

    First the 2015 can tow 5,000lb in theory, well at least in Europe they can with the same transmission and differential, must be a marketing thing in North America, The reason I say that is the 2016 Sorento is rated now at 5,000lb with exactly the same transmission and engine from the 2015. Funny how that works. Second, the KIA is a way more refined CUV than the path finder, engine, transmission, ride quality and 4 wheel drive from a mechanical point of view. I say KIA is the clear winner if you remove the driver inconsistencies. :-)

    I love you video for the cars and I would like you to make another video with good off road tires. Nissan has a better capability off road and in all terrain (Swamp, dessert, Savanna, red mud, snow, rock, rain forest region) Nissan had prove the best.The UNHCR uses the Nissan an Toyota for all outreach in Africa, South America and Asia. I drive the Pathfinder 2014 to work in Kelowna from Prince George and I know how good the car is in this winter. Four wheel drive with good traction to the slippery road.
