Maria (Julie Andrews) and the children ride throughout Austria singing "Do-Re-Mi."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the most popular movie musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent who regularly misses her morning prayers because she enjoys going to the hills to sing the title song. Deciding that Maria needs to learn something about the real world before she can take her vows, the Mother Superior (Peggy Wood) sends her off to be governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Arriving at the Trapp home, Maria discovers that her new boss is cold and aloof, and his seven children virtual automatons-at least, whenever the Captain is around. Otherwise, the kids are holy terrors, as evidenced by the fact that Maria is the latest in a long line of governesses. But Maria soon ingratiates herself with the children, especially oldest daughter Liesl (Charmian Carr), who is in love with teenaged messenger boy Rolf. As Maria herself begins to fall in love with the Captain, she rushes back to the Abbey so as not to complicate his impending marriage to a glamorous baroness (Eleanor Parker). But the children insist that Maria return, the Baroness steps out of the picture, and Maria and the Captain confirm their love in the song "Something Good." Unhappily, they return home from their honeymoon shortly after the Nazis march into Austria. Already, swastikas have been hung on the Von Trapp ancestral home, and Liesl's boyfriend Rolf has been indoctrinated in the "glories" of the Third Reich. The biggest blow occurs when Von Trapp is called back to active duty in the service of the Fuhrer. The Captain wants nothing to do with Nazism, and he begins making plans to take himself and his family out of Austria.

Yes, for sure! My own mother absolutely loved this film ever since she saw it in theaters at the age of 8 when it was being re-released a few years after its original 1965 premiere. We have the film on DVD and she once told me that before we got the film on DVD, that she must have watched TV airings Sound of Music for around 30 times. :)

When it was first released it was lower quality and most of the time black and white. The movie was remastered later using more modern computers to process the original film used.

if anyone didnt know julie wasnt just hitting a high note, she was going up 3 octaves in one breath, in perfect pitch with her head voice in bravado!!! (correct me if im wrong) shes a god sent angel who has probably the most amazing vocal range to date.
Elizabeth Schmidtberger Absolutely awesome vocal range. Absolutely impossible she was actually singing in that scene.
All the songs were pre-recorded obviously before they went on location. Julie was so good at lip-sync that it looks real time.
Even though its pre-recorded its just, wow... Doing that is damn near impossible. And probably tiring as all hell. Theres only two ppl i can think in modern day time who could possibly do this justice is Lady Gaga, and Amy Lee from Evanescence. I cant think anyone else living who has that strong of voice like Julie

It is not just about a strong voice, it is also about pitch and breath control. Julie had a wonderful natural 'instrument' but she also had years of formal singing tuition with her mentor, a noted concert soprano Lilian Stiles-Allen, who enabled her to make the best use of it. Julie didn't actually think her voice WAS strong enough for opera which inclined her to musical theatre instead.
My grandmother was the choir director in her church for a number of years and a beloved singer in her town. When I was little she gave my 3 younger sisters and myself singing lessons using the music from the sound of music. She made us perform this song for our family and honestly it is one of my favorite memories. We fully intend on performing at her funeral when the time comes. She is 91 and an absolute sweetheart! Love you grandma!

I watched this movie as I was a little boy. Now I am living in Austria for the past decade. I have to say, it's one of the most magical places that I have ever lived in. Every time I go away for a trip I get sad and want to go back. Never thought I would miss such a country where I am not even a citizens of.

I live in Salzburg, where they made the movie. And i grow up in the town where the curch is, where they married in the end of the movie. When you visit salzburg, make the "sound of music tour," it´s worth it. ♥
I've always thought that from 1:28 to the end they were just jumping up and down randomly on those steps, but I have just realised that they are jumping back and forth to the step that corresponds to the note they're singing.
That's why the two boys run ahead of them up the steps, they are singing 'so' on the fifth step while Maria is singing 'do' on the first.
They all get it perfectly except for Louisa. She and Liesl were supposed to jump from 'fa' to 'mi' straight away. Liesl did, Louisa didn't. At 1:36 she realises she's on the wrong step, goes to correct it, then jumps to 'fa', albeit a little late.

Actually, the actress who played Liesl (Charmian Carr) said in an reunited with the cast interview that actually, she was the one who made the mistake, not Louisa (Heather Menzies). Her mistake got Louisa confused cause they were suppose to jump at the same time. Heather didn't know that until the interview and they were laughing so loud. Plus, they both said it was a surprise they used that take, cause they did the scene corectly so many times, yet they still end up using this one. You can find the interview on yt, I think it's from the 90s maybe.

It's so funny to read that, due to licensing/copyright difficulties, The Sound of Music never played on Austrian tv until the late 1980s, so for two decades Austrians had no idea why busloads of Americans were always going through town singing about Edelweiss.

Maria is like the Von Trapp's personal music teacher. From the moment Maria sees that Captain Von Trapp's children never learned any music or songs Maria teaches them how to sing which really brings back Captain Von Trapp's sense of music.

No CG. No stunts. No Hollywood explosions. No technology. Everything is so simple. They’re walking and singing and it’s the most memorable movie ever. Great script. Great music. Something sorely missing from today’s productions filled with vulgar language, bedroom scenes, and loud bangs and CGI just to keep people entertained. In comparison writers don’t write like this anymore.

We went for the sound of music tour in Salzburg a few years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the various locations including the gazebo. In my childhood my father took me to the movie when we lived in Mumbai. This movie has taken a unique place in my mind since. What a great production! All these actors and actresses have left a indelible mark in our minds. May god bless them.

I love The Sound of Music...especially Do Re Mi. Even after watching it a zillion times. And the high note at the end... zowie! Too bad Julie has not been able to sing since that fiasco with the throat surgery.
I hope Liesl (Charmian Carr) is hitting a zillion high notes, like that one, up in heaven.
Today at church, Ellen, my favorite organist/choir director, sang some high notes I didn't know she had the range for. She has a deep speaking voice so I didn't know she was a first soprano.(I had thought she was a second soprano or an alto. I prefer first sopranos, so I was thrilled to hear her sing first soprano.) Bravo Ellen!
Julie Andrews and this movie version of the Von Trapp kids is why I fell in love with Europe as an American kid. I still hope that some of this spirit still exists in real life.

Reminds me of my grandparents, my mom told me this was the very first video they saw in cinemas EVER. Obviously I don't know when exactly they saw this, as it was an English-spoken film and they were in the Netherlands... it kept my mind busy especially when we saw it in elementary school (I believe about age 10) and I was very intrigued by it, and still am. It's such a MASTERPIECE ❤ and remembrances of my amazing grandparents are so very special to me. I never even got to know my grandpa (moms dad) because he passed away from colon cancer 1 yr before I was born 😢😢😢 I wish so hard I could have known him... 💔 especially after the stories mom told me about him. This movie reminds me at least ❤ already lost 2 of my aunts and grandmother too,, from cancer 😢😢 can't ask them about him anymore 😢
