Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap ALBUM REVIEW

    Chicago rapper and singer Chance The Rapper comes through with a more ambitious mixtape with Acid Rap, improving upon his production, hooks, and recording quality. A lot of the beats on this project are impressive as hell, but Chance often puts hooks, ad-libs, and instrumentals ahead of the quality and cohesion of his lyrical content. Anyone listening deeper than Chance's over-the-top persona will find there's a little something missing.
    What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

      Well, when Fantano gives a great rating on an album or very much enjoys an artists work, he has a tendency of comparing music of the same genre to that artist's work, especially during that year. It's just something fresh in his mind. It can be annoying, but I see why it happens.

    I kinda agree with some of the stuff you have to say, but when you started talking about the second half of the album,that's where we disagree. Its not fair to give something bad score just because its not revolutionary and changing the game. not every album is going to be "a breath of fresh air"

    • @theneedledrop
      @theneedledrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว +235

      i don't think i disliked the last half of the album because of it's lack of new ideas. i think the LP is somewhat novel throughout. the issue is i DISLIKED a lot of tracks after the halfway point.

    • @i7Cool
      @i7Cool 10 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I personally enjoyed songs after the halfway mark like Smoke Again and Chain Smoker, basically because they're just chill songs to listen to. It doesn't have a meaning its just words and rhymes and I like that. But not everyone can agree on everything, I respect your choice but I would've given it and 8.

    • @PaweLBeatz
      @PaweLBeatz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      theneedledrop Just a question, how come you're so focused whether the song appeals to you or not and not how the overall project impacts the game and how it's going to appeal to certain people or maybe just his fan base. Not every track is there to please you, I don't think that's a fair way to take away point.

    I understand you try to hold your ratings to a high standard, as you review every genre...but there's no way in hell you can give this classic mixtape anything lower than a soft 8. Right next to GKMC and born sinner for rap albums of the year IMO. A complete joke (as the Grammys always have been) that this album wasn't even nominated, yet macklemore wins almost every category for a very subpar album with over the top progressive concepts that anybody who's not an asshole would support.

      Not to gang up on EnlightenedRap, but thank you Wallas. This is pretty much everything I wanted to say and more with a very articulate delivery.
      MC Ride is not an "idiot who looks like the devil yelling on a microphone". He is an MC just like any of the rappers you like and he does not just "rhyme the last word of each line." Just like you have your opinion, in my opinion he is a very intricate and highly intelligent lyricist. Seriously, just read. Maybe you won't enjoy the lyrics but if you looked them over you cannot say they were written by an idiot. They have structure, vocabulary and strong visual elements. In fact I think what he does is almost closer to poetry sometimes.

    Acid Rap is an absolute masterpiece, ever since it first came out, the thing with this mixtape is that you need an ear out for that organic and raw end of music, not about refinement and production, this mixtape is so intimate and it’s like the more you listen to it the more of a relationship or even a friendship you get from it. This album was a huge part of my life in 2013, and I think you have to step away from professionalism for a second in order to really connect with this mixtape , there is no room for formality in acid rap, even the most juvenile verses give you a taste of that endearing ignorance that youth often emits

    Dude you need to do a video explaining your "scale" a little bit more in depth. From your review, it's obvious that you enjoyed the album, but evidently a lot of people feel insulted that you gave the album a 6 because they have some preconceived notion that 6 means "bad", or at least "not good". A little elaboration on what is a "2", a "6", etc., would probably help your audience understand that just because you didn't give an album an 8 doesn't mean you didn't enjoy it, it's just that you didn't LOVE it.

    I disagree on your Smoke Again input. When Chance delivers the line "Lean all on the square, that's a fuckin rhombus" I had to pause the track because I was left speechless with that metaphor. And I personally feel that Ab-Soul's verse fit well with the song, and his "She only got you as a nigga on the side. That's a nigga on the side of a side bitch homie" line was on point. Just my two cents tho

    I feel as though it is bad to judge the album by it's ability to tackle some of the social issues it addresses. For someone who prides himself in looking at the album as a whole, Anthony ignores the fact that chance is painting the picture of someone who is more preoccupied with drugs, relationships, and growing up than researching and presenting well thought-out arguments supporting his opinion on some social issues. Rather, he is sort of going through some messed up realizations and anger about the real world that comes with growing up, and banter in tracks like paranoia is more about delving into these social issues among other things circling in his mind, and not necessarily protesting his developed opinion.

Anthony is obviously a very smart man, but he's a bit too much of a critic, I think at least. Really great production, NaNa, and the second half, I could see being easy to dislike, it's a tough one to listen to all the way through, but when it comes up on shuffle I love every damn song. Chance has the most unique delivery when he raps and his ad lib is part of him its more than just a noise it symbolizes how one tweaks when on acid and things of that nature. chance raps about things that would make people think but not every one can be super intellectual like nana is a point where you can just chill and have fun listening like favorite song but even that one makes you think a little. I think the point I disagree with most here is when you talk about how Chance 'isn't a serious voice' on the social issues he refers to. I think he has a really thought-provoking, insightful view on these social issues (especially violence in songs like Acid Rain and the second half of Pusha Man). Just because he refers to these issues from a personal standpoint and doesn't really talk about them objectively doesn't stop his message from being powerful. If anything, it makes what he says easier to relate to/sympathize with and creates a more emotive response from the listener.

    Flash forward to present day, I have listened to acid rap so many times it's unbelievable. It's engrained into my psyche now. All I'm saying is that people change, and along with that, so does taste in art. How can you give this a 6? It is probably the best mixtape of the year. You say things like he barely scratches the surface and i just cant understand where you are coming from. Chance is one of if the the deepest new MCs. It seems like you are holding his introspective raps to an unreasonable standard and you also pidgin hold him to that style. He is just as good at being deep as he is being funny. You are overlooking a lot of great wordplay "lean on the square, thats a rhombus" It makes me wonder if some is going over your head. Also how did you not even mention good ass intro? Cremate your teammates and freebase the ashes deserves a video just for that line. I'm not sure if I can take your opinion on hip hop seriously unless you revise this review up.

    This Guy is a genius, what he said in the end there about chance being to jittery and dropping acid too much keeps him from dropping verses that really grab your attention and make a point or say something that truly matters, instead he seems to just scratch the surface over and over again. Yet you give A$AP Ferg's annoying struggle fest a 7? Haha I like this channel, but I don't get you sometimes, man.

      He's obviously bias on some choices, everybody is bias even you are for your favorites. He likes ASAP Ferg so he gives him a higher rate.

      Matt Johnson He'd take a dump on 10day lol, I don't think it would fit his taste in music. Plus, the production value is pretty average , so we're looking at a 3/10.

    I personally love the mixtape. sure, it could have been better, but for an up and coming early 20's rapper, it struck me as fantastic. I like the way it has multiple tracks with so many different emotions. It's been on constant rotation on my iPod since I learned about Chance.

    This was a really sweet, sentimental mixtape. It delves into lots did sensitive vulnerable places emotionally when discussing drugs and relationships and it's something of substance this generation can properly dig. This piece is special.

    GKMC though? How is spacey as you said related to GKMC. Acid Rap is totally unique and the closest thing to it is Cadillactica, maybe?

    Personally I would give this album a 9.5 - 10. I've been listening to it since it came out. A majority of this is because the melodies are so mood inspiring. I also think his messages and double entendres are very clever. I'm not sure how you failed to acknowledge chain smoker. It's a very eye opening song about drug use which is exceptionally complemented by the backing music/track. For me, it's one of those songs that sends shivers down your spine.

    I was with you till the end the whole point was to rap how it's like to be on acid hence the name acid rap so the whole jittery part you where just talking about at the end is what he was shooting for this honestly is one of the most complete and well executed mixtape since kush and oj

    i think in terms of originality, this is something people havent heard or thought of before. i think if you included that aspect, it gets at least an 8.

    i agreed with you mostly when this review first came out, but due to the fact I've listened to this whole thing just about once a day since it came out, i think this thing deserves an 8 or 9

    OG Chance fan here - brought here by curiosity after The Big Day review (which I agree is a "Recycle Bin Special" as my cousin puts it)
    I agree with your appreciation of the tracks but disagree with your rating. This has always been a concrete 9 or 10 for me. This mixtape does not age. I heard this at my college concert back in 2014 I think, and Chain Smoker hit me in my soul and rumbled through my bones when performed live. Absolutely unforgettable.
    Don't plan on tripping acid anytime soon, but man does this mixtape put me in another dimension. I'll be listening to this when I'm 90 years old

    Your review was very in depth, and I really agreed with the first half of the video, but I guess my own personal tastes got in the way of agreeing with the last half. Mainly because after listening to Acid Rap way too many times, I've grown to love the last half of the album a /lot/. The first songs gave me a very lasting impression and they have a fuckton of feeling. But the last half of the album has some of the catchiest songs for me! The meaning isn't as deep, it feels to me like more of that persona that Chance walks around with publicly to me, but I dunno. My opinion is leaning towards more what feels right to me, whereas yours is clearly based on actual understanding of music, lol. Great review!
