And Sonic has worked with humans before. One example would be that professor in Sonic Unleashed. Even besides Robotnik, humans have been established in the games since Sonic Jam in 1997. Plus, the classic games took place in deserted environments anyway. It would be like saying humans have no place in Doom.

    • @bigboomer1013
      @bigboomer1013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Dr. Eggman: is literally a human
Adventure 1: has humans but may not be that relevant
Adventure 2: the story has the humans have an important role for shadows back story and the president is a human as well.
Sonic jam cartoons: the cartoons have sonic living among the humans since the 90s.
Sonic X: it's based off the Adventure games, so why not have Sonic befriend a human as he and his friends got transported there?
Unleashed: humans are not the relevant, but it gives us something to relate to our own culture as each continent is based off real places.
Sonic works with humans and since he transported to the human world like Sonic X, it works. I made a comment about how it has always been this way and the responded with how having Sonic and humans be together wasn't the problem. Their real problem is how it's focused on the humans too much. Honestly though, I don't see it. There are less screentime on the humans, but they did do more in the movie like in the wedding and in the end where Maddie and Tom came to save sonic.

The whole “hUmAnS dOn’T bElOnG iN sOnIc” thing has never made sense to me. Like, you do realize that the main villain of the series, who’s in almost every game, is a HUMAN, right? It’d be way weirder if humans never showed up in the series outside of Eggman. And heck, Shadow’s whole story revolves around humans (oh look, it’s because that backstory ties into and expands Eggman’s lineage, how about that), and the Project Shadow storyline is widely considered one of the best in the series. It really ends up feeling like this is a point that only ever gets brought up by diehard classic Sonic fans who unironically repost the “rough transition to 3D” meme whenever a new game comes out. And people wonder why the games have such a hard time pleasing their fanbase…

Honestly as someone who still liked the first movie, I found the sequel highly enjoyable and is probably the most fun I’ve ever had with a videogame movie. It doesn’t take itself remotely seriously and is all the better for it, is super (Sonic) fun and entertaining, is able to add more elements and callbacks to the games, and best out of all, seeing Team Sonic interacting with eachother on the big screen is a true delight. In fact, I’m considering seeing the movie again sometime soon.
What Arlo needs to understand and that his response video doesn’t even fully address is that people didn’t havd an issue with his opinion, but the way he *presented* said opinion. His video was less of a review (despite the title originally just saying “Sonic 2 Review” before being changed to be far more condescending) and more of a messy, unfocused and unscripted rant filled with generalizations and contradictions. And if you’re gonna put out an unpopular opinion on something that’s generally well-received from a massive fanbase, that’s probably the worst way to go about it.
I’m not trying to tell him how to make his content nor condone the hate/harassment he got, but I feel like if he made a clear/concise scripted video like with his previous videos reviewing things, then he would’ve gotten WAY less pushback. Since I saw even plenty of peeps who are a fan of him state that his OG Sonic 2 video wasn’t good. Just as an example, I'm not particularly fond of the way the modern Mario Kart games are designed (I'm planning on starting a video game review series soon), but I'm not going to repeat what Arlo did and instead actually write a script explaining why I feel the way I do while also pointing out the things that I legitimately do like about the series.

one of the criticisms Arlo made that kinda bothers me a little, and he wasn’t the only one to say this, is that the first and second movie should be geared towards fans other than the audience and children who rarely knows who the dude is. sure there can be a movie that can direct to that formula, however many video game movies or movie “adaptions” have failed to do that multiple times, Assassins Creed, World of Warcraft, Uncharted, Tomb Raider (which literally does the same thing as the game itself but instead of playing you’re watching) The Mario Bros., and many others have completely failed on to explaining the simplest things of the video games, Sonic the hedgehog movie 1 actually almost started off with him running away from Dr. Robotnik, already to a quick action scene, buuuuut Sonic gives an actual backstory to who he was, how he came to be and why some of the things happening to him exist, and sure it may not be the type of Sonic we fans know and love but we can get why Paramount did it and how it was better than what most other video game movies do, and look at the sequel now! we finally have some new lore, backstory and half of the movie explained the events before, i’m not saying that a character like Tails needs a Batman story that takes half of the movie, or every little thing that needs to be explained, as MangaKamen said, “pay attention to those minor details.” it’s mostly just common sense

The movie critic Filmento brought up a point is that video game adaptations should not be 1 to 1 with the game that they are based on because what’s the point of seeing that said movie when you can just play the game that it’s based and probably have a better time

@@rico4376 It's why Welcome to Raccoon City failed to please Resident Evil fans. There was a clear love for the source material... but it stuck so hard to telling the basic story of the first two games that it eneded up failing as an adaptation when really just doing the first game would have been fine since that entry's plot is pretty bare that can (and did) go a bunch of different ways creatively speaking. Instead we got a movie where Ada is somehow not involved in the plot of the second entry like she is in Canon, no Barry Burton, and a Jill Valentine who has actually met and interacted with a Leon Kennedy.

Honestly, I just came from his rant jus to be sure I knew what he said before this video addressed any of it, and a lot of what Arlo said came across as him not actually paying attention to the movie or a place of bias. Like, he sounded like he hated the movie because of what he wanted it to be, not because of what it was. Like if someone played The Godfather video game before seeing the movie, than saw the movie and hated it because they were expecting a movie with GTA action or something along those lines. If maybe the same scenario with the Scarface movie and game. I know this is an extreme example because both movies are classics, meanwhile the games are GTA clones for the most part, but I'd still say that the point stands. His rant was almost entirely subjective, he wanted a very particular kind of sonic movie, with no human characters besides Eggman/Robotnik, and hated that our real world was the setting. Which is a fair reason to dislike it , but he presented the idea that Sonic is always worse when given any real world elements, regardless of whether it's in the games or movies. He very much made it seem as though he has no love for anything Sonic post Sega Genesis, with the exception of the games that had little to no basis in our reality, like Sonic Colors, and that's why he hates these movies. Because they incorporate stuff from all over the Sonic mythos, rather than just the parts he likes. I saw someone else call him a Sonic Genwunner, and that description seems very appropriate to me. His whole video gave the impression that he went into this movie and was checked out from the instant it started because he just wanted his favorite parts of his favorite Sonic games adapted, and not the rest of it.

I was honestly having a hard time watching the video, because I really wasn’t into the bad faith shtick. It’s fine for him to rant about things he doesn’t like, but the issue is acting like the things he didn’t like is an overall negative when it’s… kind of just a “him” issue. He literally walked into the movie theater expecting to hate it and then (surprise) hated it. I’m glad he at least corrected it and said it was more of a rant, but in general I’m just too conked out with “negativity for the sake of being negative” nonsense. It’s the main reason I AVOID rants nowadays.

People like Arlo, I feel, are indeed important as someone who can criticize the things that are genuinely flawed to major and minor degrees when no one else seems to either be interested in doing so or perhaps too afraid to do so. That being said, I do think he often gets a little to overzealous with his pessimism which ends up taking away any real criticisms he might have. I obviously don't condone any harassment but I do think he needs to be told when it's taken too far and just unreasonable. I find it even more baffling when he's not much of a fan of something yet still criticizes it as if he is which is exactly what went wrong with his Sonic movie review. The bias is just too strong and feels almost made up at points in order to justify a longer review. I felt somewhat similarly about LS Mark's review though I fully respect his take while with Arlo I'm at a loss on why I should respect his review in particular given how he did it. Sonic 2 wasn't perfect but it's been awhile since I've watched a movie where I truly could feel the fun the people had while making it. It's wacky and adventurous yet never feels like it crosses the line of just awful noise to keep kids occupied like with Illumination movies. As an adult and an old time Sonic fan, the movie was good and fun. There are times where Arlo though, just feels like he's bordering on anti-fun with some of his takes which is really weird because his opinions regarding things Paper Mario or Pokemon usually hit the right marks that feel like they're more than just his bias being the main mouthpiece of his criticism

I haven't watched Arlo's review (because I'm not going to watch a nearly hour long rant about why he didn't enjoy something I did), but, from what I understand, the difference between his and Mark's reviews is that Mark actually took the time to think about the movie. Not trying to insult Arlo or anything, but he uploaded a 50 minute, unscripted rant the day the movie came out, while Mark took the time to write out a script and edit it before he shared his review. And while I think some of Mark's criticisms came from misunderstanding, and that he probably should have taken more time, or perhaps given the movie a rewatch to more thoroughly analyze it, before uploading a review, I don't think that would have changed much, because a few of his criticisms were valid, and others, he admitted, came down to personal opinion. And, at the end of the day, he was part of the target audience and did claim to enjoy the movie despite its flaws. Unlike Arlo who, like you said, claimed to be a part of the target audience even though he wasn't, and reviewed it as if he was.

I was kinda already put off his videos for awhile now, as he seems overly negative lately, and pretty much just as the same hot takes as most other "everything sux" reviewers online. (It's like everyone wants to be the AVGN, not realizing he was a parody, and not a legit reviewer.)
Like in his "Nintendo characters that should be retired" video he said the Koopalings and Andross (Starfox) should go away forever, despite the fact those characters were retired for literally decades, with fans actually missing them, and only came back recently. Neither character/s are as overplayed as he said, (the Koopalings seem regulated mostly to the NewSMB series, while Andross was replaced by other lamer villains for years) so he has some odd takes on things.

The other humans would be mostly superfluous (Even as a strawman id say just to say the movie “Is not perfect it has flaws……” so if anyone complained about them, the lovers of the movie wouldn’t care)
The main draw was gonna be Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman doing stuff
The plot would be simple because Sonic and co are all being invested in very easily thanks to the legacies
And the action would be intense because there’s not that much to worry about reality wise besides what’s happening right now in the moments

The movie wasn’t perfect, but I still had fun watching it with friends. A lot of Arlo’s criticisms made no sense to me, and still confuse me. Should he have gotten as much shit for it as he did? No. But should he have made a more concise and structured video instead of a long, sloppy rant? Yes. I know he said that he wanted to put out his genuine raw feelings after seeing it out there, and that’s his right, but he also should have expected it to be a poorer video than usual, and been ready for the criticism that followed. A lot of what I saw was valid and just pointing out inconsistencies and the like. And the ones that were more hateful should automatically be ignored cause they aren’t trying to help anyways.

I'm fine for Humans to exist in Sonic media, but they should not overshadow Sonic & Friends. Besides Robotnik. He's crucial to be involved in the plot.
I think the reason alot of Sonic fans dislike Human characters in Sonic Media...Stems from Sonic X. Chris Thorndyke (and to a lesser extent his family) dominated that show and Sonic & Friends felt like secondary characters in their own show. Even Sonic got his role downplayed to being the Deus Ex Machine hero who shows up when Chris (and Sonic's friends, who spend more time with Chris than Sonic) need to be saved. For most of the show, you're not following Sonic, you're following Chris.
Then you have those other Live-Action movies which have the title character buddy up with a Human/s, and often feel overshadowed or like they are fighting for focus with the human characters. The Smurfs, Garfield, Tom & Jerry, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Detective Pikachu, and worst of all, the Micheal Bay Transformers movies.
Sonic The Hedgehog did it alright, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 did it alot better.

    Thanks for the video!
I'm old (40s), and I played Sonic (1, 2, and others) and to be completely honest never really liked the games, I was always more of an FPS guy. But I liked the character. Watched some of the cartoons and thought there was potential. Then came the first movie, which was way better than I expected, I really liked Sonic. Then, I loved the second movie even more. After thinking about it, I think what clinched it for me was the people that interact with Sonic, specifically Tom and Maddie. In most movies where there are fantasy characters interacting in the real world, most if not all adults are just stereotypical distrustful morons, and plenty of times it is the children that first befriends this fantasy characters. Not this time; fist we have Tom, which is full of doubts at the start, but eventually gets to know and befriends a lonely Sonic that craves to communicate, and by the end there's a very much earned friendship between Tom and Sonic that immediately expands to his very smart, loving, and amazing wife Maddie. The end of the first movie with the three of them on Sonic's new room was the real climax. Sonic has a real family and the Wachowski's now have a son they never expected to need or love so much. On the second movie, that love expands to the point where there is growing pains, but at the same time, there are lessons learned by Sonic and his character arc is even more resonant. The addition of Tails and Knuckles help in Sonic’s development of course, and they are amazing characters I can’t wait to see grow and develop, but there’s also growth with Tom and Maddie becoming more mature parental figures, without degrading into stupid, grotesque or lame preaching adults. They love Sonic more than ever, they trust him, too but also worry about him being lonely, knowing they can’t be with him always; but at the same time, they also proved that they will never abandon him, even if that means dying with or for him.
That's when I realized: It’s the human connection that made me like the movies and Sonic so much. This is what they Sonic movies have nailed better than any other similar movies before it. Yes, the wedding scene could’ve been better edited but was still good and helped emphasize that Sonic trusts Tom and Maddie with his life. For me, the ending on the battle were they all hug is the emotional high point, perhaps only second to when Sonic calls Tom, dad. I believe the connection of Sonic with Tom and Maddie is the center and heart is the Sonic movies. Maybe this doesn't work for everyone, nor for people that knew Sonic from the games, but in the movies, the trio are now essential. If they take care, develop, and mature this relationship in the sequels, Sonic’s future as an extremely successful franchise will be all but guaranteed.

      @tcrpgfan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll add to that with something I've said elsewhere. The reasons why people responded well to the Sonic movies are twofold: The first is that most other kids franchise adaptations make earth a place the heroes visit on their big screen outing. NOT SONIC. It's made very clear that for all intents and purposes very early on that Earth. Is. HIS. HOME. Not a place he visits. HIS HOME. That immediately gives Sonic a much better reason to protect earth than he's the hero and that's what he does. The second reason is that this is the first time in the franchise where Sonic actually having a family is the biggest focus. You could make the argument in the games that he has a family made up of friends, but the movies don't hide it: the Wachowski's are his family. And Maddie even lampshades it in the second movie with 'Let's go get our kid.' That's not to say Sonic doesn't have family in other media, he very much does, but they weren't given much of a focus outside of the backstory for why his homeworld went to shit whereas Tom and Maddie get a lot of focus and are probably among the best developed human characters you see in these types of movies. Also: I LOVE that Tom and Maddie are a team that actually COMMUNICATE with each other. Especially since that would be a very healthy thing to show someone like Sonic (And by extension, the kids in the audience) what a health relationship looks like.

I only had one nagging complaint for the Sonic 2 movie, but I’ll place it below a spoiler line just in case.
    ------
How the movie handled the past accounts of the Owls vs the Echidnas was inconsistent. They battled each other until both sides were wiped out, seeming to see each other as a threat over the possession of the Master Emerald. But at the end of the movie, Tails says something akin to “two great tribes worked together to defend the universe from this power getting in the wrong hands.” Which like … no, that’s not what you’ve been saying this entire movie. Where did that shift in perception come from? Sonic empathizing with Knuckles about losing everything has nothing to do with whether the Owls and Echidnas were enemies or companions.
It feels like this might have been a longer script and key moments that connect these opposing perceptions was cut. Or maybe the script was different originally but not all details were smoothed out in revisions. Either way, that inconsistency is still eating my brain after seeing the movie yesterday. Though, to be clear, I still had a blast with this film. When I saw the trailer revealing that Knuckles would be in the film, voiced by Idris Elba no less, I knew I was in for some fun. And I wasn’t disappointed!

I personally did really like the film. I'm not gonna hold it on a pedestal as the "greatest video game film of all time" since it only really has 2 competitors (one of which being the previous movie) but it was overall a great time. I really liked the characters, the interactions the action. The only real flaws are the comedy being very hit or miss and the B plot dragging a bit too hard for me. Other than that though, I am a very pleased Sonic fan and can't wait for movie 3.

I’m in the minority here- but the worst part of the movie by far for me was the soundtrack. Moreso- the lack of one.
Sonic games always have his knack of having really catchy tunes, yet the tracks picked out for the movie imply a more serious tone. Which is okay- but just wish this movie had a little more campiness to it

I do think that while the first movie wasn't as interesting in terms of plot, said simplicity let it be a bit more effective in writing. Nothing felt rushed there.
Sonic 2 doesn't have that same conciseness, but hot chilli dogs I don't care.
Sonic and Tails were a fun and adorable duo, Knuckles was both intimidating and amusing, Jim Car- I mean, Eggman was as kooky as ever.
That ending fight had me grinning like Joker. Even more with the mid-credits scene.

I think you should take some time to watch his second on the subject about the subject. It is a lot shorter than his initial review and he addresses on how he went about his review. He also addressees his own though process on how he went about it and while he still stands by his video, he does reflect on a number of aspects from his own thoughts to the backlash he received and if he could have gone about it differently. I think there are some things you might agree on when he comes to his own self reflections.
I say this because I feel like a number of people are looking at this on the outside looking in and just seeing a guy talk a lot of shit and just leaving at that. To be clear, I don't agree with how he went about his review either. Nobody is above criticisms and I truly believe that. While I think your criticisms were fair, I do think that certain aspects of your video rubbed me the wrong way when it comes to Arlo himself. It kinda felt like you were just so eager to dunk on him like a lot of the other nasty reviewers you've covered in the past. Not accusing you of it, but that I perceived it that way. That could be just me and I can only speak for myself.

@@Mangakamen So assuming you watched the second video, you don't agree with his reflection that he made some mistakes about how went about his video?
Secondly, It was just my own observations that I felt. Nothing about my opinion is delved in fact, as what can be joking around to you might be fair, to someone else can be taken as a slight. I am not accusing you of being malicious or anything and I am not trying to say that. I am only saying that it made me feel off. It was only my interpretation of the video's jokes. I get how you can see it that way, and while personally I didn't view it with that way, it isn't like his video changed my mind on his take. Even his first video on sonic 1 was a pretty hot take, so I am not going to act like his video on sonic 2 was surprising.
I think it is the way I try to explain my points that invites misinterpretations. That has nothing to do with this, I am just putting that out there. If it sounds like I am putting words into your mouth, I'm not trying to. My point was that it came out to me that you were dunking on him a bit hard and that was only how I saw it, not how you actually did so. Inferring from your words, they were just friendly enough jokes. That wasn't to say that you weren't. Your criticisms are valid. I only wish to express how I saw it.

I defend the bar scene in the film as well. Mainly because it was kind of a major bro moment for Sonic and Tails, how Sonic tries to boost up his confidence and builds up the friendship between the two. It is a bit predictable and cliché that they would use Uptown Funk of all songs, when, like many fans complain about with both movies, they could’ve just used any other Sonic track from the previous games, but it was still a fun moment nonetheless.
It also helps with Tails’ character, since he was inspired by Sonic to join him on his adventure, and Sonic helps make him braver by the end of the film when the two of them, along with Knuckles, team up to stop Robotnik.

  • @youngbounty1394
    @youngbounty1394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree. Many people that critique this movie often point out nitpicks that don’t make or destroy the movie. It’s like you can’t make a good movie without someone being all, “beh it doesn’t make sense to me because dancing, they’re going to really strange place, and it’s just this character doing this and that, and I didn’t like it.” The wedding plot was hardly ever talked about until the third act and it became the best part of the film by the third act. Sonic doing a dance-off instead of getting the map does not make it a flaw when it works and the dancing worked, it was a lot of fun and it was funny. What I care about is story and characters. It was a great story that worked with memorable characters, whose relationships made sense. Hell, I like how it treated itself like a video game, because this literally is a video game movie. I say if you want to make a video game movie, actually make it feel like you’re watching a video game being played on the big screen.
Personally, I had fun watching it and I don’t even play Sonic.

All I can say is, as long as you enjoyed yourself in throughout the movie, most of the time; then I'd think it's a good movie. Sometimes, I do find myself trying to put logic into movies, that really isn't a need for(thank you Cinema Sins...), and that ends up making me think the movie is poorly done. Honestly, sometimes you just have to turn off your brain and just enjoy a movie, it wasn't perfect, I didn't care for the B plot, or the dance battle, I feel they could've done something different, but that's just me.
I also do agree with Arlo on the inconsistency of the Sonic's powers/speed. Like, at the first confrontation with Eggman/Knuckles, just a few minutes ago we watch Sonic clean the entire house within seconds, so why is Sonic riding in the police car with Tails, when he could easily just get out, and taking Tails with him, outrun Knuckles? Why couldn't Sonic take the map from the people in the cabin, when we know he could get it in a blink of an eye? (I know you mentioned they needed a place to stay that's warm and to stay in for the night, but why not just use one of the Rings to portal out of that situation, after they get the map, and come back another time, or something? I don't know.) And he does it again, for dodging the barrage of lasers and missiles from the robots in their next confrontation. So, when we get to the part where Eggman is about to steal the Master Emerald...and stops to monologue, Sonic could've EASILY taken it, or pushed Eggman away from it(we could argue that Sonic was tired from his fight with Knuckles, but still, he didn't look THAT tired to just do a quick run only a couple meters away). It's just, seeing it happen on and off, just really ate at me throughout the movie, because it was relevant for the low stakes moments, but never for the high stakes.
I know, I know, movie gotta movie, and if things worked out logically, movie would be over in only about 30 minutes; right? It's just stuff like that will always bother me, when you KNOW what the character is capable of, especially with the stakes as high as they were. Just my thoughts on it all though, I did enjoy the movie, for the most part, and would recommend it to fans of the games, but still some flaws, and minor nitpicks that bugged me. I'm sad they couldn't give us an remixed version of Death Egg Robot theme too; missed opportunity. Either way, I'll still see the third movie as well, and see if we'll get an introduction to Rogue as well(I mean, we got to have her, she's essential to the original plot, as well as GUN).
