He's a big synth nerd and wanted to heavily rely on the Yahama FM synthesis from the MD era but according to him, the studio said they wanted an orchestral contemporary movie score instead. Which makes sense, producers often want the "safe" route. That's what he means by "couldn't use the snyth."
The way Junkie XL treats Fury Road and Wonder Woman compared to Sonic and the Godzilla vs Kong films is like night and day. Fuck, at least the Godzilla vs Kong duology had an interesting use of synths which is probably something Adam Wingard wanted since a similar style was used for the Netflix Death Note film. The Sonic films really got nothing that separates their OSTs from every other film score, and it's a shame since the franchise has tons of iconic and catchy tunes just dying to have that cinematic redux.

Brian Tyler composed the Super Mario Bros. Movie by putting all his heart and soul into it. Then you have Junkie XL who composes the Sonic Movies like an android waiting for a paycheck.
Mario’s OST had so much potential, but stayed to close to home to be awesome. Mario as a series has a WIDE array of music and only using the most popular during the most intense scenes. Then, during off time, instead of utilizing the colorful and wonderful melodies of mario, it becomes generic.
I appreciate that you mentioned that Junkie also did the soundtrack for GvK and The New Empire, because I'm a fan of both franchises and I also see a lot of people in the Godzilla fandom complaining about how the soundtracks for those two films are vastly inferior to KOTM soundtrack (with some exceptions) and also how it greatly wastes the opportunity to adapt classic themes for the monsters. Like Mothra. I'm amazed how he managed to have two fandoms against him for the same reason
This explains why I remember the licensed songs, and the original rap and R&B ending songs more than the score itself. While on topic, I think “Speed Demon” would have been a much better choice for the beginning of Sonic 2 than “It’s Tricky”.
Watch the same thing happen with Live and Learn where they bought the motif to use in the trailers and then for the actual movie its more of the same score from the last two movies

Imagine if the themes of Team Sonic, Dr Robotnik and the many other motifs had the same emotional and epic punch present in tracks like Flight, Goodbye My Son, You Die or I Do, A Beautiful Lie/Men Are Still Good, Is She With You, This is My World, The Red Capes Are Coming, Cyborg Becoming/Human All Too Human, Superman Rising Part 1 & 2, At the Speed of Force, and The Crew at Warpower! It's very unfortunate, and we can only hope the next Sonic movie projects improve their soundtracks, whether they bring him back or replace him.

Maybe one day he'll realize that Sonic is special to a lot of people, but I sadly doubt it. Edit: And his Godzilla music is disappointing, too.

My dream composer for Sonic 3 movie is Brian Tyler, he nailed Mario movie music, he did NFS: The Run soundtrack and he does soundtrack for main Fast & Furious films, guy is literally has Sonic energy on its soundtrack, just give him more than just orchestra (like for example usage of Guitar and DRUMS) and he will nail Sonic soundtrack, i bet he would do it as well if he would did soundtrack for Sonic game

It feels like "Epic and Energy" is his second name, recent Fast X soundtrack is a really nice example of that, and now he also proven that he can nail Videogame movie adaptation soundtrack with Mario Tyler still didn't lost a touch

Junkie is such a boring bland composer and gets attached to music of series with BEAUTIFUL and ICONIC themes but makes the most boring, generic and downright disrespectful to the music stuff. He hates motifs sm and it feels in a way disrespectful to the original composers. It would of been sick hearing THE ACTUAL FULL DROWNING THEME but nope hid it for a milisecond. Or Super Sonic music in the Super Sonic scene but nope. There’s alot of vids on YT that prove too how much better and impactful better scoring and using the game music makes scenes better. Now with his stance on Ai and Sonic 3, I PRAY we get another composer and like you said like Knuckles or Transformers One (yeah he was announced at first but got replaced by THE GUY WHO DID THE TRANSFORMERS PRIME MUSIC SRS IM SO EXCITED FOR THAT SCORE). I hope like that tho Jeff and the others get someone like Pat Casey (who he stated he’d love to do Sonic 3) to do the score mix with a great composer like the Mario Movie did. In all fairness, neither does the Sonic cartoons use music from the video games. The intro to AOSTH is the only song that remixes the Sonic 1 title screen with In The Hall of The Mountain King. Very generic cartoon music in the end of the day. In The Hall of The Mountain King must be in the public domain of music as you hear it in other trailers and is why Inspector Gadget 2015 also uses that music instead of reusing the original. Sonic X and in my opinion, at least tries to go for a more cool and epic sounding score that still feels very Sonic-like, but that's just the Japanese version. Yeah, for those who don't know, Sonic X's soundtrack also has the same music issue as Sonic CD where 4kids gave their own soundtrack to the English dub for that show. Not all of the 4kids soundtrack sounds awful but just generic really. The title card theme in Sonic Satam and Knothole's theme is the only theme I can recognize and all the Robotnik themes too. Sonic Prime also sounds cool as they also try to use a very 16 bit video game sounding score similar to the SEGA genesis. Overall, SEGA doesn't own the rights to Sonic music because SEGA usually doesn't make they're own music in house. They're usually hiring outside artists to make music for their games. Other game companies are that way too. I think Doom and some other franchise are the same way. So that's pretty much the main reason why we may never hear accurate music in the movies. We can't argue against the legal copyright system. Nintendo on the other hand does make their own music which is why listening to Mario music in the cartoon shows and movies aren't an issue. They all own the rights. Which is why I still give the Mario movie a pass despite how much celebrity music they still use. The original score in that movie made a better effort. As for Sonic movie 3 or anything else Sonic related, I'm not really expecting the music to sound faithful or accurate after all I just said. SEGA just does things differently. We heard Green Hill Zone in the first Sonic movie traser, Emerald Hill Zone for the second movie teaser, and now we hear Live 'n' Learn in the third movie teaser. I'm not really expecting the third movie to have Sonic music in it, but that's not what I'm entirely looking for. I just want to see a good movie which so far, I have enjoyed the past two Sonic movies. So that's pretty much all for me.

I can’t help but feel like companies get attached to the name rather than the product. I agree with you all the way. They could hire a fan to compose music for the entire movie, have it cost almost nothing in comparison, and it’ll be remembered and loved because it’s someone who understands the original product.
I didn't knew that Junkie XL made the OST for Godzilla VS Kong, I hope in Sonic 3 he improves since being based of SA2 it doesn't have the restrictions of the first 3 classic games....... at least I hope they use the main theme or else the theater will burn
Why don’t they use Sonic music for inspiration and try to make it different but not too different that it’s not noticeable…? There is literally 33 years of Sonic and Sonic music as well so it’s not hard to find inspiration or at least a starting point for the music. If they want to go for orchestral, there is literally a Symphony dedicated to Sonic music that they can easily use at least one of those songs as a starting point.

The music is the only thing from the Sonic games anyone can comfortably say is good,even by those who don't like Sonic. And yet they always ignore them probably to spite me,it's not like they can't remix Sonic music and have it fit in with the movie well. Sonic Mania Adventures features tons of remixes from the games that fit perfectly with they're respective scenes and the Frontiers prologue has this beautiful orchestral remix of Sky Sanctuary,both cases done by Tee Lopes. I think if the Sonic Movies have to keep Junkie to do the score,then they should have Tee Lopes decide what Sonic song would fit the best for each scene,like how Koji Kondo and Brian Tyler collabed on the Mario Movie's soundtrack.
JunkieXL is the worst imo, and having him over Bear mcrreary for godzilla felt like a punch in the guts. Then he does the sonic series and I lost all hope for the music standing out for this series too.

I am kind of hoping that they will get rid of Junkie at some point I like the synthy sound of his soundtracks but everthing he makes and does is generic.
They're good, but Sonic and Robotnik's themes should be much better considering the many iconic ones they've had in the games and animated shows. Like, if Junkie XL gave us the Flight theme for Superman and Wonder Woman's theme when collaborating with Hans Zimmer, and by himself gave us Flash's At the Speed of Force, Cyborg's Human All Too Human, and the Justice League's Crew At Warpower theme, then him having such lower quality themes for Sonic is a major offense.

@ dude, the MAIN THEME leitmotif is cut out so much from the movie that the first few times I watched it in theaters didn’t even know that that was the movies theme! We lost the DKC reference to “take on me” a bunch of 1-1 theme references to “I need a hero”
@@linktheplayer3 That's what I mean, they cut part of the score, but most of it is still intact, and if you find one in the album that is not in the film, either they cut it or it does not correspond to any scene and you assume that it belonged to a deleted scene or they simply made that piece for the album, and in my case I did recognize the main leitmotif.

Junkie is such a boring bland composer and gets attached to music of series with BEAUTIFUL and ICONIC themes but makes the most boring, generic and downright disrespectful to the music stuff. He hates motifs sm and it feels in a way disrespectful to the original composers. It would of been sick hearing THE ACTUAL FULL DROWNING THEME but nope hid it for a milisecond. Or Super Sonic music in the Super Sonic scene but nope.
There’s alot of vids on YT that prove too how much better and impactful better scoring and using the game music makes scenes better.
Now with his stance on Ai and Sonic 3, I PRAY we get another composer and like you said like Knuckles or Transformers One (yeah he was announced at first but got replaced by THE GUY WHO DID THE TRANSFORMERS PRIME MUSIC SRS IM SO EXCITED FOR THAT SCORE).
I hope like that tho Jeff and the others get someone like Pat Casey (who he stated he’d love to do Sonic 3) to do the score mix with a great composer like the Mario Movie did. We can’t have another SONIC movie with a bad score and a lack of any motif’s/references to the game esp taking from SA2.

Man. This Junkie person is like the Ed Goldfarb of the Sonic franchise. ( context : Goldfarb is the composer for the western version of the Pokemon anime, because they couldn't be bothered paying to license the original ost. it's widely agreed his music and directing fucking sucks )

Tyler's already doing Mario, so he's a bit of a predictable choice.
Others I also think would work are Steve Jablonsky, Michael Wandmacher, Heitor Pereira and Daniel Pemberton.
In all fairness, neither does the Sonic cartoons use music from the video games. The intro to AOSTH is the only song that remixes the Sonic 1 title screen with In The Hall of The Mountain King. Very generic cartoon music in the end of the day. In The Hall of The Mountain King must be in the public domain of music as you hear it in other trailers and is why Inspector Gadget 2015 also uses that music instead of reusing the original.
Sonic X and in my opinion, at least tries to go for a more cool and epic sounding score that still feels very Sonic-like, but that's just the Japanese version. Yeah, for those who don't know, Sonic X's soundtrack also has the same music issue as Sonic CD where 4kids gave their own soundtrack to the English dub for that show. Not all of the 4kids soundtrack sounds awful but just generic really. The title card theme in Sonic Satam and Knothole's theme is the only theme I can recognize and all the Robotnik themes too.
Sonic Prime also sounds cool as they also try to use a very 16 bit video game sounding score similar to the SEGA genesis.
Overall, SEGA doesn't own the rights to Sonic music because SEGA usually doesn't make they're own music in house. They're usually hiring outside artists to make music for their games. Other game companies are that way too. I think Doom and some other franchise are the same way. So that's pretty much the main reason why we may never hear accurate music in the movies. We can't argue against the legal copyright system.
Nintendo on the other hand does make their own music which is why listening to Mario music in the cartoon shows and movies aren't an issue. They all own the rights. Which is why I still give the Mario movie a pass despite how much celebrity music they still use. The original score in that movie made a better effort.
As for Sonic movie 3 or anything else Sonic related, I'm not really expecting the music to sound faithful or accurate after all I just said. SEGA just does things differently. We heard Green Hill Zone in the first Sonic movie traser, Emerald Hill Zone for the second movie teaser, and now we hear Live 'n' Learn in the third movie teaser.
I'm not really expecting the third movie to have Sonic music in it, but that's not what I'm entirely looking for. I just want to see a good movie which so far, I have enjoyed the past two Sonic movies. So that's pretty much all for me.
Bro, to all the people in the comments (I haven’t finished the video yet, so it might or might not to the creator too) just because that movies don’t have song or sound references, doesn’t mean that the songs are bad. I’m disappointed that there aren’t any references either, but I’m not gonna say the ost is bad because of it. I really like “speed me up” and the sonic 2 theme was good too (forgot the name)
The songs you are referring to are music made for the film, not the score.

So.... why are we ( by we I mean SEGA ) still working with this guy ? Like. I already knew the movie OSTs were not up to the standard of the Sonic franchise, but I didn't know that the composer stood this firm in his stance. It's widely agreed that these OSTs just aren't good enough, so why have we not changed composers yet ?
There's nothing to lose by hiring someone else, is there ? The original themes and motifs composed aren't anything, you don't need to bother paying royalties to use them in the 3rd movie, just get rid of them. Get a composer who understands the appeal of Sonic music and the nuances of theatrical sound to direct the music.

I can’t help but feel like companies get attached to the name rather than the product. I agree with you all the way. They could hire a fan to compose music for the entire movie, have it cost almost nothing in comparison, and it’ll be remembered and loved because it’s someone who understands the original product.

Why don’t they use Sonic music for inspiration and try to make it different but not too different that it’s not noticeable…? There is literally 33 years of Sonic and Sonic music as well so it’s not hard to find inspiration or at least a starting point for the music. If they want to go for orchestral, there is literally a Symphony dedicated to Sonic music that they can easily use at least one of those songs as a starting point.
literally been my thought while i was watching the first movie in the theater, like S06 ost is very orchestrated but it's also incredibly memorable, its just painful lol. I don't even want references i just want plain cool and memorable music, i dont feel like its absurd to ask for interesting music in your big budget hollywood movie

And yet they always ignore them probably to spite me,it's not like they can't remix Sonic music and have it fit in with the movie well.
Sonic Mania Adventures features tons of remixes from the games that fit perfectly with they're respective scenes and the Frontiers prologue has this beautiful orchestral remix of Sky Sanctuary,both cases done by Tee Lopes.
I think if the Sonic Movies have to keep Junkie to do the score,then they should have Tee Lopes decide what Sonic song would fit the best for each scene,like how Koji Kondo and Brian Tyler collabed on the Mario Movie's soundtrack.

They're good, but Sonic and Robotnik's themes should be much better considering the many iconic ones they've had in the games and animated shows.
Like, if Junkie XL gave us the Flight theme for Superman and Wonder Woman's theme when collaborating with Hans Zimmer, and by himself gave us Flash's At the Speed of Force, Cyborg's Human All Too Human, and the Justice League's Crew At Warpower theme, then him having such lower quality themes for Sonic is a major offense.
For the record, I don't think it would've been a problem for you to say the shabbat dinner scene had instrumentation that's associated with Jewish tradition lol. It was for shabbat after all!

@ dude, the MAIN THEME leitmotif is cut out so much from the movie that the first few times I watched it in theaters didn’t even know that that was the movies theme!

The point is that some of the movies greatest tracks like driving me bananas world 1-1, press start, and bonus level were cut, and they were really great tracks that makes the scenes so much better than licensed music that the scenes clearly weren’t made for
