I bought one when they were that cheap and ran it on a 1984 F150. It was almost as easy to use as an Edelbrock and had a classic "Holley look" to it. It was really easy to tune and ran that tired old 302 way better than the 2bbl Motorcraft I pulled off of it.
They say that the seal on the glass sights are only replaceable by the manufacturer, but when mine went bad I was able to find a 1/16" thick oring from hardware store and it sealed up nicely. mine is a 750 summit and bought the kit to rebuild it and runs perfect.
I was sold on the annular boosters and the Holley 4010 and Summit carbs seem to be the most affordable Holley style carb to have those boosters. I want to run a choke so the ProForm main body is not a choice. The Holley Truck Avengers have annular boosters on the primary side and I was looking to buy one of those, but they are hard to find used for an affordable price. I tried to get a Motorcraft / Holley 4180 to work, but with no success. I have a 351w with an E303 cam, Stealth knock-off intake and GT40 iron heads in my 85 Mustang. It is backed by a t5 and it frequently turns 800 to 1500 rpm around town. Gas mileage is pretty poor with the 1850 Holley 600 vs. I just bought a used 4010 750 double pumper from e-bay I want to try on it. I think the annular boosters will be a great benefit putting around town, but I hear the transfer slot is mostly responsible for fueling in that low rpm. Performance may improve too. I would like to do a back to back compare at the track.
Not to long ago I got a Summit carb for my 68 Plymouth with a 383 and its been the best carb for the money and I went through a Holly and an Edelbrock and the Summit just work so much better.
That carb is a Holley design from the late 80’s early 90’s. It was an ok carb back then. My buddy ran a 750 on his 440 Motor home. It ran good on his. I tried a 650 on my Ramcharger with 360. It didn’t run well at all. Went back to the Thermoquad
Still running mine. Never a problem. Could use .031" discharge nozzles for my application though. Once in a while if you're light on the throttle and goose it a tiny bit it'll have a slight rich bog. I'm running the black pump cam I found that to run the best. But, if you step on it decently hard or really step on it hard no bog at all.
1972FordF150 i have experienced the SAME bog under light cruising conditions with throttle tip in. i run an o2 gauge and its actually lean! goes to 15-16 to 1 afr. ill let you know when i come up with a solution, im working on it!
Mine never seems to do it over 35 MPH. It mostly seems to do it at slower speeds. Nice to know I'm not the only person with the problem, it drove me nuts trying to get rid of it.
I'm running 5 PSI. I won't run anymore lol I already have hard hot restarts most of the time from heat soak. Never really floods over just takes a few seconds to get restarted.
alright i wanted to get back to you on this light throttle bog issue. since im running an afr gauge i can momentarily see the engine go lean and i feel this light acceleration bog. im going to make a video on what i did to get rid of it, so watch for it within the week, but im going to tell you outright. i beleive this is due to too much transfer slot exposure on the primary throttle blades. today i replaced me carbs secondary throttle blade adjustment set screw with one with an allen key head so i could adjust it on the car. i set my primary transfer slots so that what i could see of them was a square. i then adjusted my secondary idle blades for my idle. what a difference. i dont see the numbers jump lean any longer. i do think that the carb needs a smaller squirt. mine goes dead rich if i slam the throttle hard for a milisecond in the beginning. im in pump cam position one on the stock cam. might play around with the holley green or orange pump cam, but it seems the pump shot is much too big. id imagine especially for your larger displacement engine this is the case.
Your conclusions are correct the Summit 600 is an underrated excellent street performance carb. But don't use teflon tape on fuel fittings 3:45 an inverted flair doesn't seal at the threads anyway. This carb has the best design features of both the reliable simple leak proof Ford/Autolite 4100 and easy to tune Holley 4160 3:35 but isn't a copy of either.
Engine Masters just did a shoot out between the Summit, Demon Street Demon, and the Edelbrock AVS. For a baseline they used a $700 Holley on the dyno. The $299 Summit beat all the other cheap carbs and tied the Holley.
Thunderhead289, will this Summit 600 Carb need any changes out of the box (jet sizes/springs) for a 331 Stroker with an XE266HR12 cam, Weiand Street Warrior intake, Blueprint 190cc heads, and a manual granny 4 speed? (Close to dropping engine in my 1980 Bronco) would rather not tear apart carburetor after it’s in the engine bay
Hey Thunder head. Not sure if you are still around but had a quizzer for ya. I like your car choice. I have a 69 cougar convertible with 351w. Bought a slightly used summit 600. I am having a hell of a time getting it to run right. I can tune it as best I can while warm and it still runs rough/sketchy at idle. Smells caustic exhaust. If I turn it off and fire it up 20min later and it runs even worse. Can't get it idling right. Just wondered if you have bumped into this before with this carb? No apparent vac leak. Choke operating fine. Float level fine. Idle mix adjusted with vacuum. Ever seen internal vac leaks with yours or any other issues that could trigger this? Power valve?(tested it). I can remove it and put on a Holley 570 and it runs fine. I feel very confident it's a carb problem. I am not a mechanic but have installed carbs on this car a 100times. Lol. Thanks, Dave
Hey Dave, I encourage you to join the Thunderhead289 carb and engine tech and tune Facebook page - this is fairly common on small engine bay cars with most all carburetors - usually the more sensitive a carb is, the better it is capable of performing. Basically, under hood heat is getting the best of your situation here - no matter what you do, the heat will cause it to lean out and struggle - believe it or not, running lean puts off a pretty good amount of stank also. I ended up converting my 65 to an electric fuel pump fuel return line set up which completely eliminated my issues entirely.
Thank you for taking the time to make a video, I just ordered a 600cfm vac sec for my c20 w/ 350 sbc. Also ordered a edelbrock eps performer. Been wanting to replace my worn out quadrajet that's really worn and missing peices sadly. Figured I'd do the leaky valve covers and leaking intake manifold while I was at it, it was a spread bore performer from the 70s anyhow. Again, thanks! BTW: anyone know where this carb is built? China? Usa? Just curious
looking at buying one of these summit 600 carbs for my 65 ford truck with a moderate cam and built 302.. also considering a 600 quick fuel slayer or 580 hr series. Any thoughts about the summit carb compared to the quick fuel carbs? Im currently running a 500 edelbrock performer performance .. it runs great.. but lacks a lot to be desired at the top end. or at least it feels that way.
josh johnson well, i love my summit carb. went all the way to virginia 1400 miles, drove it all summer, autocrossed the car, and then drove it back home again. you just cant beat it for the price either. uses holley parts so it is very easy to work on. granted i am a very experienced carb technician. i would go with it, and if you have any tuning questions, feel free to ask away.
I have the 750... It's a neat design but summit support didn't have any information hardly. My carb runs way lean mid throttle. You don't mention that ALL the air bleeds snd ALL the accelerator restrictors are summit proprietary sizing and cost$100... I spent $200 just on tuning parts for mine
I know this is a little late but sounds like you need a lighter power valve. Rule of thumb is take you cruise or idle vacuum number and divide by two. For example, if you pull 16 inches of vacuum install a number 8 power valve and go from there. Part throttle fueling before you tip into the secondaries is what the power valve is for. Hope this helps.
I have a 600 holley on a 5.0/302 efi to carb conversion it is set on 5.5 lbs. I thought between 5 & 6 lbs would be best. I am going to go with the 500 cfm version i think it would be better for the smaller ford V8 Good video thank you!
none of the holley 4010s came with brass floats, all 4010s came with fuel inlet screens, all had annular boosters and there is absolutely no fuel pressure in a float bowl of a natural aspirated engine. yes, these are very good carbs. great little car and great flag on the dashboard!
I got an idle restrictor kit from summit, they are big jets .52 is standard, could you explain what the idle restrictor jets do,and the relationship too the idle screws?
Old old video lol. I wish the carbs were still in the $200 range.

Is this carb still holding up well?
And here I thought my Dad and I were the only oddballs that carried a Crescent Wrench in our pockets.
I wanna put one on my 390FE

It's just a slightly modified Holley 4010 series.
Which is based on the Motorcraft 4100 lol
Which is based on the Autolite 4100.

Did you have any issues with the transmission from primary to secondary. I’m going lean for a second with 72 jets.
What holley model fuel rail fits these carbs. Or will i have to make a custom one to use a fuel gauge.
How much fuel pressure do you run with this carb? I have a holley 600 i run 5 1/2 pounds with electric fuel pump!
Iv had the old summit up to 7 lbs without any issues 👍

how do I richen up the summit 600
How have you determined that you need to richen it

God love him, love that good old flag :)
