    Beretta is a world class company. They have been making guns for centuries. They didn't make the Minx as a toy. It was made as a self defense gun. Like the 22 short or not.

    Looking at FBI stats collected from home defence encounters. All calibres drove off the attackers roughly equally. Which isn't surprising, those that are primed to run will run as soon as they hear the bang. Those that are gonna fight will fight regardless. BUT one surprising stat was fatality rates. .22 has the highest fatality rate out of all the calibres listed. Now it's just pure stats without any explanation behind them. Personally I suspect it's down to mindset. If a person has a .22 and they know it. Then they are far more inclined to go HAM to make up for the perceived weakness of the calibre with volume of fire.
    On a side .22 fared worst for incapacitation compared to other calibres. It's kind off "all or nothing".

    I am extremely surprised with the penetration. Back in the early 70s I was shot with a 22 short from about 15 feet. It hit my ribs and deflected upward and lodged against my collar bone. Removing it took about a 3/4-inch incision and a pair of tweezers. The entire path of the bullet was only about 8 or 9 inches. Not a lethal shot by any means, but still not something I would want to do again.

    Inadequate but still potentially fatal.Robert Kennedy was killed by a .22 Short.Plus I read of a recent case of someone killed by a .177 air rifle which often have similar velocity to .22 Short but less energy due to the lack of weight of the hollow airgun pellets.

  • @frankbrowning328
    @frankbrowning328 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The 22 Short load has such a tiny amount of fast burning powder that it still produces fairly high velocity out of a short barrel. It penetrates nearly as deep as some 22LR loads. Yes, it's potentially lethal But I personally do not recommend it as the wounding power of an unexpanded 22 cal bullet is not very good and no one can predict if it will tumble.

    I have tested all manner of small calibers on small game. The one I was actually the most impressed by was the 6mm Flobert CB and BB rounds made by Dynamit Nobel.
    The BB cap especially. One of those left 2 entrance and 2 exit holes from opposing directions. ? The only way I can figure that happened is that the ball passed through the squirrel, bounced off the tree and passed through the squirrel again from the other direction. The velocity is close to 800 fps from my marlin model 10's 16.5 inch barrel and I am not sure how. ( Had to shorten Marlins barrel about 30 years ago due to bulge). These two rounds are what I would use exclusively for back yard squirrels if they were available and affordable. There is a 4mm Flobert that I would love to get my hands on with a short single shot rifle to try as well. These Small case rounds like the .22short and the Flobert are not to be underestimated. Remember, the model 1 S&W in .22short was designed for self defense, not as a Parlor gun.the .22short was designed to shoot MEN.

    Even a cci cb short at a distance of roughly 15 yards fired out of a ruger single six with a 4 5/8 in barrel will go through 2 pigeons and a steel barn roof. .. occasionally. And when it doesn't penetrate, it still dents it with authority. This surprised me enough to think it couldn't possibly happen again but I had to patch several holes that day. I learned to respect those little rounds. Also to only take shots that line up with wooden posts. I certainly wouldn't want to be shot with one.

    The penetration surprised me. I'm trying to recall if Paul Harrell ever tested the .22 short in the meat target. I've seen them tested on 12oz cans of soda (extremely scientific 😅), they had some snap.

    Interesting test. I've shot.22 Short from a Ruger LCR but, not any testing, just paper target. Seems to be very accurate at 25 feet ( CCI/ 29gr.) . Although with your test in Gel Block, it seems that it definitely doesn't deform the bullet, but say if it does hit or used in self defense, i would say it probably would deform if it hits bone, arteries, etc. As for a self defense bullet, that would be dangerous anyway. Just the sound or being hit by it wouldn't feel comfortable. And then, higher velocity. 22 ammunition is in my opinion, a better option for carry rounds.

    Thank you. It performed much better than I expected. I was under the impression 22s wasn’t going to penetrate heavy clothes. Very interesting, especially because the shorter barrel wasn’t much different than the 6” barrel. I wonder if the revolver losses energy at the break point? I would like to see where the threshold for each 22 size round and barrel. Where is the optimal barrel length where the powder is spent at the perfect time vs wasted in muzzle flash or burned up too soon before it exits the barrel? The Naa Mini revolver is what I’m thinking. Like is the 22s version actually using all the potential energy from the short round? Or how long is the perfect barrel for it vs the 22lr or the 22 magnum?

    That CCI round nose probably the ideal ammo choice opposed to the slightly lighter, slightly faster hollow point ammo (and I can find this ammo at a decent price!)...penetration the only game in town out of the Beretta, and the other valid good point is the extremely light recoil allows rapid following shots...the Minx might not shine in a Hollywood style gunfight, but emptying the magazine in the face of a bad guy might be enough to save the day...we carry it's cousin, the .25acp Jetfire, and that is our thinking...a small, lightweight gun on us beats the .45 left at the house...so the .22 short, while a little less capable, could fit the bill in a pinch...

    Nice video. I did find this on the internet, so you know it must be true, yea right. The 22 caliber kills more people than any other type of gun. My wife supervisor was murdered by his wife with a .22. The Police Report described his body as being perforated. The man murdered was a large athletic male, working for a government agency. My wife has a .22 for protection, I have a 9mm. Enjoy, stay safe & check your six.

    One thing I've learned is that you never want to use .22lt hollow points in a rifle for self defense (assuming you have to use a .22 in self defense at all). A hollow point out of a handgun won't expand, so it will penetrate just as well as a round nose bullet... but when you shoot a hollow point .22lr from a rifle, they usually do expand and that seriously decreases the bullets ability to penetrate... and with .22lr, all you have is penetration and placement. Nothing else really matters. I've seen people to tests with .22lr rifles and hp bullets and only got like an average of 6" of penetration. In some cases they only penetrated about 4". A small .22 short (Like a Beretta .950) will save your life in 99.9% of all situations you could ever find yourself in... so if it's what you have, carry it with confidence. You don't need a large, high capacity firearm for self defense. Yeah, they may be better and they may help you in the 0.1% of rare situations that you'll likely never find yourself in... but they're not an absolute necessity for the vast majority of people in the vast majority of situations. If you have the ability to carry something larger, more powerful and with higher capacity though, I hope you do. You, the people you care about and/or other innocent people around you may rely it one day. I think small guns like this are for when you can't carry something larger or more powerful. In today's world though, we have .32ACP and .380ACP guns that are nearly identical in size... and 9mm that are only a little larger. (Even a .22lr and/or a .25acp, like the Beretta 21a for example is twice as powerful as the .22short and/or .22 long. Also, surprisingly, the .22 short is actually slightly more powerful than the .22 long.)

    During my career I was called to the hospital morgue for a young, healthy guy found dead in his front yard. Xray revealed a .22 short lodged in his heart. The round entered his armpit & stopped in the heart. Investigation revealed he’d gotten into an argument w/a neighbor and the guy shot him. There was almost no blood and the entry point was concealed by underarm hair.

    Shocking results? Really? It simply illustrates that as much energy is lost at the cylinder gap of the revolver as is lost from a short barrel blow back action pistol... and that the bolt action rifle is the most efficient and usually accurate configuration for sending lead down range... so when .177 pellet rifles and BB guns are capable of killing humans, I don't see any logic in doubting the capabilities of the .222 short cartridge.... They're a great little round for sure.

      The highest velocity I've ever seen listed on a box of shorts showed 1105 fps...that is just a slim fraction above the cci target short at 1080 fps, which would be my 1st choice out of a short barrel...not a lot of variety in short ammo, as rounds get too small to doctor much...
