@@gavvy057 omg, yes. Years ago i spent 2 nights at a resort in Thailand, and never knew they were there until the last day. 2 under the bed and 1 behind the mirror. They were very quiet.
The bloopers 😂 I would've had the same reaction! Also I love your enclosure and willingness to work with her! Most people give them small bare setups and give up on them so soon after getting their "mean" impulse pet. It's nice to see a tokay getting proper appreciation :)
Omg I feel like I would NEVER get used to that bark!! It's so startling! I'd like to think someday I could own a Tokay, but I'm also a big baby when it comes to being startled, so maybe not LOL. I'll just watch your videos and admire from afar! Your progress with Dahlia is so inspiring, though!!
Snowy Whister where would you get one? I found one today and I really don’t think we have wild tokay geckos here where I live so I’m like where did you come from? I loves him but I’m not ready for one so I’m about to give him to a reptile rescue. but I kind would be interested in the future.
I got my tokay as ayearling (maybe slightly less), and she was one of the sweetest geckos in the cage. She did not bite the man who took her out. I have gotten nipped at a couple times since then, and yes, it’s quite startling, I don’t think it’s possible for me to not flinch, but I love her and wouldn’t trade her for any other reptile or amphibian. I hold her maybe 3 or 4 times a week and that has calmed her down so much that she’s similar to a tame leopard gecko. She doesn’t run away when I try to pick her up, and when she gets annoyed she just jumps onto something, or maybe crawls to a darker area. I feel bad assist feeding her mealworms (she eats crickets and doesn’t think of mealworms as food but I’d like to switch over to a mealworm AND cricket diet), she always barks a little bit when I do it because obviously she’s confused, but other than that she’s a quiet, tame little lady!
Love the gecko and the enclosure. It’s great when you see a tokay in such a big terrarium! I’d only upgrade the setup to a bio active one, but I’m biased because I love the look of natural setups. Good luck handling that tokay.
I think I work the show you are talking about with the guy that has the tokay. Its massive and a complete sweetheart. He also told me it took about 7 or 8 years.
Wonderful video! I was so pleased by this. Keeping tokays myself I found your information spot on. You have taken the time to work with your animal. You have learned to read the animals body language. Most importantly you have shared that information. Thank you so much! And a huge thanks for supporting C.B.!!
Great video! I'm pretty much where you are with your Tokay gecko. My tokay will tolerate very little handling. So far this is the only reptile i've ever had that would not "tame down" / tolerate being handled. As soon as I have all the nooks & cranes secured my reptile room i'm going to try a new tactic. I'm going to close the doors in the reptile room and open the enclosure. Take the gecko out of its enclosure. Put it down somewhere in the reptile room, and let it do whatever it wants until it wants to show itself back into its enclosure. Repeat this more than a few times. That way MAYBE it will become more comfortable around me, and in time i will slowly try to interact with it. haha!! Well see how this will actually go haha!! Either way it should be fun. :)
I think that you're great! So brave too. Some animals are not for the feint of heart. I also welcome that, maybe it's in someone who likes a challenge. I've had rescue birds that would bite my hands/face and I'd go back for more. Embrace the fact that you're a rare type and approach animals with the personality type of "Do your worst!". Good for you! I have the most tame potato type crested gecko. I gently permeated some of my warm breath under him to warm him one evening and he freaked. Totally unnatural for his extremely laid back personality, and he was really unsure. Eventually I desensitized him to the feeling eventually (six months) he didn't respond at all. Success! I realize were talking about an exceptionally tame crested gecko with a hang up and a Tokay. As far as I've seen you've made a lot of progress with her since you've "taken her in". Pushing boundaries is all part of taming with any species. It's all about trying again another day and desensitization, working very slowly. I see that you acknowledge that too. Great job and keep up the amazing work!
I have a male and female Tokay and I just used my hands for the most part. They kept biting me for a week and then realized I didn’t care. If you show fear they see that and feel like biting will empower them. As of today I just take them out and the Female barks but doesn’t bite. The Male is pretty cool and doesn’t bark ever 😎

And he also told me to set the heat lamp on top of the wire mesh of the enclosure. I did that and I smell something funny. Not sure if the ceramic has to burn off or what.
