This hit home for me. I work as a red teamer and my first job was as a result of someone who watched my video and sent me a message and connected me with someone who was hiring. Crazy to think I was making videos for fun and someone offered to help me back! 100% on point, can’t agree more with this post

This video definitely gave me a slap on my face. Usually I´m the lurker, because I feel like I won´t add anything on the discussion or someone could answer that person question better than me as you said on the video.
I will try to put my self out there, Thank you!

Ive had this in my watch-later bin since it came out, I regret not watching this on release day, it actually opened my eyes significantly, especially the part about "theres always someone who wants to be at your level" when im a JR feeling like "man ill never be able to get a decent job in cyber sec" as im a new graduate

    Thanks for this message Heath.
To anyone who sees this, I have been one of those who fell into the wrong community. It is easy to fall victim to some of the elitist communities out there. Trust me, it won't gain you any favor and will only make you feel worse about yourself in the end. Be cautious about any group you find that has to bad mouth others. There is often an ulterior motive whether you are aware or not.
Stay a positive light regardless of the haters!

I needed to hear this!! My social anxiety really keeps me from engaging with others especially if I need help and often I'm just not confident in giving advice especially with how elitist I have seen the community can be sometimes. I'm almost finished with a python course on udemy and I aspire to eventually work my way into cybersecurity. Specifically pentesting/ethical hacking but I have quite a ways to go as I'm still learning Python. Hopefully I can eventually get my foot in the door to the field as a back end engineer but even then it seems like a long road ahead before I can even apply.

Thank you for this video. I definitely got some ideas on how I could improve my portfolio and very maybe actually help someone out by doing it. The concept of helping others out sounds quite familiar. Are you familiar with concepts like the dharma or ikigai? They're both basically recipes on how to live a happy life. From my own research one of the best things one can do to be a happy human is to be of service to others, and well service is basically what you're saying: helping others out and being a good person.
Thank you so much for helping me out ☺️ I look forward to watching some of your other videos!

I also think that those who are in this field know the value of informations in general more than people of any other field of knowledge... Because for whichever team you are working(blue or red), your work is to defend or to gain "information". The more I'm discovering this field the more I'm receiving this "consciussness" about informations... That's why is a great field: everyone knows what is the weight of information and shares it when possible and useful! I'm a beginner that comes from a philosophy background and I'm loving the field for this global consciussness. Thanks for showimg us this importance

Soft skills require far more growth to hone than any certification. You have to be able to empathize with people, to put yourself in their shoes and be kind.
This video is extremely important for those folks who are technically strong but emotionally stunted. Work on being a good person, invest time in understanding other viewpoints, be diverse and inclusive and generous with your time and you'll succeed in all aspects of life.

I can teach you anything technical, I cannot teach you how not to be an asshole. Working in a team is THE most important aspect, if you can’t work with others, I’ll pass on hiring.
This come from experience, I’m a Director managing a 15 person security team, and my turnover rates are REALLY low.
We hired a junior analyst recently simply because he had a good base of IT experience, had a great attitude, showed he was committed to learning and fit well culturally with the team. Met him at a local meet-up while drinking. Note I didn’t ask for a page worth of certs there.

    • @MygenteTV

Lol this sounds like me. I got hired 3 days ago in the same way. Don't take me wrong, they sat me in a room in front of 5 people and asked questions, the next day called me and gave me a VM to see if I would be able to hack it, and 3 days ago they sent me a contract. All this within 4 weeks, I'm starting next Monday.
The reason, I said "hey that's me" is because it was all I had to offer to these people, being passionate, hungry to learn, and have no problem with interacting with others.
I have no certs or anything, just some years of bug bounty. To be honest, I haven't sleep these days. Too worried about the job and wondering if I will be capable of doing this job. But to try and be prepared I had been studying AD like crazy and anything that could be of good use in an infrastructure job like this one.

hey, I'm a bit late to your comment but I just watched this video and started reading through the comments... maybe it's still useful to you :) why don't you get a bit creative with it and instead of describing your journey you do something like this: describe your journey in a slideshow of Screenshots or pictures or you add some stockman drawings and arrows or something ;)
you could still add some writing, just to practice and you'll probably get better with practice - don't let your perceived skills limit you :)
