    Every company is different. Keep in mind that you may or may not need a cert for a job. Some companies may ask for experience, a degree, a cert or something else. One key thing that will help you stand out is using the power of LinkedIn and network the hell out of people. Networking plays a big part in getting a job to bypass the ats system.

    Some great tips. I especially like the bit about HomeLabs - they're a great way to take control of your own destiny. Some IT people don't want to touch technology outside of their job and I understand the desire to leave work at work; but it also means their experience is entirely dependent on what their employer chooses to give them. If they are given menial tasks or their employer is the type to keep riding obsolete tech into the ground they end up stuck without marketable skills. A HomeLab doesn’t just give you skills and experience - it demonstrates passion and initiative.

    As an industry pro in IT - I found this helpful on a high level. I am not a "job hopper" - I have long tenures at the companies i have worked at. The hurdle I am encountering now is that all of the positions (in my area of North Texas at least) in my preferred pay scale are contract positions, and most not even contract-to-hire. I need a place to retire from at this point - I remember DOS and dip-switches, that's when I got my A+ lol. The resume info was exactly what I needed to see - I haven't changed my format since the mid-90's (Word was still WordPerfect when I created the original). Seeing what the recruiters and HR are looking for and getting some insight into their headspace hit the nail on the head. Thanks Chuck - rock on sir.

    Honestly, being introverted in a market full of extroverts makes it so much harder because we have our own great story to tell, but aren't always the best at explaining especially in an interview process where you're often put on the spot and expected to perform to the same level as perhaps other extroverted people. I think that's where having a homelab or some quantifiable example that can demonstrate you have the chops to perform given the right environment is really helpful. Or having a couple of good professional references that can vouch for the things you've done.

      You pointed it out right. I can relate to this situation. Extroverts relate very well to people while introverts are very related to tasks.

    Your videos are what I have needed for YEARS! Being a "millennial" who wasnt raised around tech (I was still using a landline rotary phone around 11 to 12 years ago 😅) it has been difficult to try and learn tech all while also taking into account the household I was raised in (my parents didn't graduate h.s. one of which did not go to h.s. at all 😮) but your videos are so detailed yet put so simply to where someone like me who always said "I wish I was smart enough for tech" you are a GODSEND SIR! At first I had no clue about almost all the stuff you talk about in your videos even existed but after stumbling across one of your videos (2 DAYS AGO) after surfing the internet for YEARS, I have been OBSESSED and hooked on watching your videos along with trying some basic stuff out but it's hard to do with an old computer running windows 7 that can't keep an internet connection 😂😅

I implore that you do so because in all of my time jumping from mediocre coding bootcamps, enterprise valued certifications, and learning programs that teach all there is to know about IT, Linux is just so fascinating to delve into, and while Tech Support, System and Network Admin and Cyber Security are all very popular and sought out job positions, I feel like not many going into Unix systems as much as you do. I could spend all my time trying to get into those but Linux is what REALLY sold me into getting into Big Tech.

    One of the tricks I have heard is to open a separate document and type keywords that you want to stand out, type these over and over again and then copy and paste these into the header and the footer of your resume multiple times, but use a white font color and shrink it down to the smallest font size for your word document application. That way the computer reads it but human eyes can't.

    Thank you for proving what I have been telling my wife for months. I had to take a 5 years break from IT and I have been rebuilding my homelab. I told my wife the Dell T330 server, Dell T5810 workstation, pfsense box, cisco and unifi switches were all for building my online portfolio. Also thank you for the resume help, I have 20 years of experience so I have a hard time getting my resume down to a page or two. Like most people in tech I would work at 1 place like IBM for 7 years. Sure I started as a repair tech and left as head engineer, but during that time I technically had like 30 job titles and working for 3 different companies. I wasn't just a engineer, I wrote software, managed 40 people, taught training classes, did technical writing, etc. I also get confused about how to list who I worked for. Like I had a IT job running 2 datacenters for a major drug company, but I worked for a company that worked for HP that did the IT for the company. At the same time company I directly worked for would loan me out to other companies for a migration project or datacenter inventory, etc.

    • @michaelamos75
      @michaelamos75 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, how important are certs? In the last 20 years I have never had do any prove myself to a company. I met so many people at IBM in Memphis that I was always headhunted or my reputation spoke for itself. I moved to the Tampa area and no one knows me and I only ever got my A+ back in the time when the tests were on DOS and Windows 3.1. I was working on my MSCE but work got in the way.
      While I love my current job, my skills are going to waste because the higher ups don't think my skills translate.

    • @Phasma6969
      @Phasma6969 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelamos75 Certs > Experience until you have Experience > Certs, or a mixture. You need them as a form of "screening", because the tests are standardised and refresh, it helps to stay "up to date". Companies care about it.

    Found you from the Certs vid back in the Spring. Since then we have been watching you like crazy Chuck. Co-workers and I are in the perfect spot for this video and I'm freakin stubborn AF when it comes to asking for help. I have been stuck in this simple High School resume that I am surprised it has gotten me this far. Certing up, getting some Azure and/or AWS (want more but work uses Azure) and going for my goal of Security Engineer. Once I'm there who knows where the next foot will go but that is the GOAL right now! Service Desk now Engineer in 5 years?

    You know what I think the best advice is to give people? Carve your own lane and do whatever it takes to get a job. I have researched this topic so many times all throughout the internet and there is so many conflicting reports, and so many different things people have done or tell others not to do. Just do whatever it takes, control your own destiny as cliché that may sound.
    Basically try anything if you can do so, you don't really know what path will lead you to success. There is no right or wrong answer.

    A tip:
    If you are already a programmer / software engineer. You can create a static site (use your preferred front-end technology and compile it to html, css, js) and host it in S3 (or GCP equivalent). It will be much cheaper than hosting a wordpress server, specially if you don't make an update every week.

    • @fumanchu4785
