    Gene was spot on with his analysis of DRS, and yet I give it a thumbs up because Martin and Caine are just that good.

      I saw it in theaters as a 12-year old and I agree with the masters here but skew more towards Roger. The first two-thirds of the movie is golden but kind of falls flat the rest of the way. I was 12 and didn't quite see that final twist coming.

    It never ceases to amaze me that no one ever mentions that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is based on another movie (Bedtime Story, starring Marlon Brando and David Niven). The plot and scenes (except the end) are identical.

    • @75aces97
      @75aces97 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember seeing that it was a remake. It was either in a written review by Ebert or possibly Leonard Maltin. For some reason Bedtime Story is in that movies that time forgot category, in that despite having 2 big stars was never in heavy tv rotation.

    • @commanderkeen3787
      @commanderkeen3787 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some critics did accurately note that the film is a *remake* of Bedtime Story (1964). But some critics apparently were not aware, because the original had not been a major hit. The original, however, has better performances than the remake. Brando is a better actor than Steve Martin and plays a sleazy two-bit conman better. David Niven and Michael Caine are both great, but Niven slightly outdoes Caine

    my bitch of a step mom loves Dirty Rotten Scoudrels and we watched it many times. I do like it, Steve Martin as the young arrogant con man vs the experienced veteran classy Michael Caine. The whipping part was probably the best and the ending was a nice twist.

    Ebert was better at critiquing comedies than Siskel. Gene always thought that comedies needed an intricate plot or something of the like. Roger knew comedies were about the laughs.

  • @canuck_gamer3359

    I think Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a good example of when Gene gets it wrong because he's losing sight of the purpose of recommending a film as opposed to not recommending it. Too often Gene is operating under the assumption that if he recommends a film that isn't "great" he's doing the public a disservice and that's just not so. It's hard for me to imagine anyone coming out of that movie thinking it was the greatest comedy they ever saw. But it's also hard to imagine anyone being angry that someone recommended it. There's a big difference between a really enthusiastic endorsement and a "yeah, it's okay." lol. Roger understood that perfectly.

    Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Twins are two of the best comedies from the 1980s. But any film in which Dan Aykroyd was the biggest name was never good.

    • @notsure1277
      @notsure1277 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zxbc1 Well, firstly, whether "Wiseguys" is "art" is highly questionable. Secondly, when "artists" and their economic allies want to sell as much product as possible, they always say the same thing "it is whatever you want it to be". Because if they admitted that the product can be clearly defined, then they would not be able to sell nearly as much product.

      Wiseguys was a bad film. De Palma can't do comedy. He can do action, suspense, thriller. But he can't do comedy. And for some reason he was never good at picking comedy scripts
