Gonna sound weird, but I actually had a little well-up of tears just listening to how excited Gene was about T2, which then made me think back to seeing it the first time and what a truly amazing experience that was. Ah, simpler times (cliche I know, but damned if that’s not how I feel).
Music... TV... and movies... are a part of our personal and collective histories. I haven't cried about T2, but nonetheless, I get what you are saying. Things like that make an impact on us as timestamps in our lives that make us recall (sometimes TOTAL Recall... LOL) all sorts of things, often just the general way things made us feel. What you said isn't weird. Just watching this review gives me the kind of feeling I think you were describing. The nostalgia of Gene and Roger reviewing it isn't unlike the thoughts about the movie itself. Things become a part of you as you live out your life, and movies are commonly part of that.
I remember watching this as a ten year old kid. S&E was a staple in our household. Much like Charlie Rose. Saw T2 three times that summer. My older bros were huge movie buffs so naturally I became one as well. Simpler times.

Same here. I saw the movie on my graduation day from basic training, so I knew nothing about the plot going into the movie. That twist came as a huge surprise.

I’m from the UK and discovering Siskel and Ebert for the first time having grown up with Barry Norman on the BBC. What I love from these guys is that not only do they show their genuine passion for good movie making, their openness to all genres and their appreciation that comes through is really refreshing. In the UK there would be a snooty snobbish review of films like Terminator 2 and Naked Gun and as a consequence we lacked real reviews despite Barry Norman being pretty good. Film is an American art form like Jazz and Rock N Roll and Siskel and Ebert are the best critics of film as they exhibit and understand this inherently.
It's good to see Gene liked a popular movie for a change. I am surprised at how many plot points they give away on the show and I dont remember that many spoilers when I used to watch Siskel and Ebert religiously.
To be frank it's hard to talk about T2 without giving away that Arnold is the good guy. It's revealed in the first shootout. What clips would they show to hide the secret? Arnold is with the boy like 90% of the movie. What would they even talk about if they couldn't talk about Arnold's dynamic with John?
I remembering loving the movie, but T2 always remind me of the arcade machine with the cop and stuff on it. It was one of the few games they had at this little bowling alley that all us delinquent kids would hang out at, because the owner didn't seem to care if we smoked cigarettes and stuff. I really miss those days of just being able to walk somewhere and there was a bunch of friends and acquaintances just hanging out. My house was the hangout house too so basically every day was meeting new people and getting into mischief together. So much different to these days where I'm basically just always alone :/
I love these guy's various shows as much as anything else on TV back then. I tended to go along with Ebert more than Siskel, but I always enjoyed the two of them together. I saw more movies than I can remember based on their recommendations. Really miss them.

The Road Warrior... Evil Dead 2 (arguably)... Dawn of the Dead (arguably)... Bride of Frankenstein, maybe... As good as Aliens is, Alien is still the better movie. Not a lot of examples out there, it’s true! (I love T2, but I’m in the minority that thinks the first movie actually holds up better.)
Can't agree, there are plot holes in T2 and none in the original, plus it drags when they detour to go take care of Dyson and Cyberdyne Systems. The original is perfectly paced and perfectly plotted.
Addams Family Values. The first one is merely watchable, but the sequel, particularly the summer camp scenes, is hilarious. A lot of superhero movies do better with the sequel. X2 and Spider-Man 2 immediately come to mind. Thor: Ragnarok is way ahead of the first two Thor films.

The Reflecting Skin looks like a film I need to see. Their description of it sort of reminded me of the extremely weird movie "Parents" with Randy Quaid--another movie about experiencing fear through the eyes of a child.
Good on Gene for talking up Top Secret in the home video segment. Airplane has rightfully gone down in movie history as one of the greatest comedies of all time. It was a game changer. And yet, a case could be made that Top Secret is even better than Airplane. I'm not trying to start an argument here. I'm saying that if you haven't seen Top Secret, stop reading my comment and go watch it right now.
Wow, Ebert was so far off on Europa Europa it's embarrassing. I totally agree with Siskel, it was about the protagonist's conflict of being himself and having to hide his identity in an environment that is so hostile towards his kind. About the unimaginable pressure. And it's about providing insights into the nazi world. Ebert talks condescendingly about the girl who wants to birth little Nazis, but at her age, she's a victim, too-a victim of propaganda and indoctrination. Of course she's an awful character, but you also have to feel bad for her because she's born into this environment. But mainly, and I'm surprised they didn't pick up on that-in fact, Ebert even stupidly asks what the message of the movie is supposed to be-I think one main point of the film is to ridicule the Nazis and expose how phony their ideology really was. It's been years since I've watched the movie, but I remember a scene where they are in school and the teacher talks about how Germans are supposed to be genetically superior and how you could even see that. All that pseudo-science BS, and then he looks at the Jew in hiding, and he says something like: you're a perfect Arian! As a viewer you sigh in relief and chuckle in disbelief of how ridiculous all of this is. The emperor has no clothes. It was an amazing movie, and I think it was good that they cast amateur actors rather than established actors.
This is the first movie I can recall where I am a total 180 from Ebert. I was the same age as the main character, so maybe that's why it had a bigger impact. Ebert didn't catch that it's a coming of age movie with the added stakes of war and genocide, and your Jewish identity will get you killed. So maybe it's better to abandon that. He felt the most like a normal teenager when he was at Hitler youth camp and had friends. Ebert doesn't know what the point of the movie is. Wer ist mein Freund? Mein Feind? That's the point of the story. Who your friends and enemies are are more often a matter of circumstance than anything. And if that is true, then war is pointless. (For the record, sometimes the most important heroes are the ones that "just survived." Often the people who need heroes the most are the one who have been through the most heinous shit in their lives and just need to know it's possible for someone to make it.)
So we’ll said. I remember seeing this on cable late at night a few years after it came out and I was mesmerized. At the time I was dating a woman whose grandparents were Holocaust survivors so it made it more personal for me.
T2 lives on because of its special effects, but it isn't nearly as tense as the first one. The sequel ups the ante with a more unkillable machine, but here they have the help of another Terminator. The first one was an unstoppable force and nobody knew if they could kill it with 20th century technology. The villain of the first movie was Michael Meyers. The villain of the second movie was Non from Superman 2 with Cyborg of the Teen Titans to defend them.
Terminator 2 doesn't just live on because of its legendary special effects. It also lives on because of its story, characters and message. Watch the film again. Terminator 2 is a masterpiece which is superior to the original in EVERY way possible.
There was a trailer made for 2 1/2 where Nielsen was dressed like Arnold saying Hasta La Vista Baby (or at least a TV spot). I remember seeing them both the same day at the theater Think I saw Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey that day too.
Well... He also said at the end that it's the best action movie since Die Hard 2, which means he thinks Die Hard 2 is better. Leave it to Gene to miss sticking the landing.

Gene Siskel tended to be tougher on action movies than Roger Ebert. But he also nailed Robocop, even more so than Roger who also liked it. He saw it for the absolute classic it was, few critics did. He was horribly wrong about Total Recall and Roger was right about how great a movie that was.
Youre 100% right. You would think that these two "movie experts" would not spoil that but I guess not. I meaN they get to go in fresh when watching films but why not their audience? They should've been more careful.

I remember that tidbit being spoiled long before the movie released by the Theatrical trailers. When the movie came out it was obvious that was the idea, but they had already given up the ship by all the hype and promotional material. There was even a story where Cameron was furious that the studio had went behind him and "ruined" his movie ... he got over it.
Compare to many of the modern TH-cam film critics who do bite sized reviews. Siskel & Ebert are pack so much insight into their segments that many (not all) of their digital decedents feel tongue tied in comparison.
What the hell was Ebert expecting from the young actor in the Nazi film? if he displays his shock and horror, he immediately gives away that he is not one of them, and the audience won't buy that he can emote openly and the Nazis won't notice it.
I've never seen 'Operation Secret'. Is it essentially the 'Zero Hour!' (to 'Airplane!') of 'Top Secret', if you catch my slightly convoluted drift? I'd always known it to be a parody of 50's spy films and Elvis flicks, but come to think of it, I can't recall any actual direct parodies of certain scenes from any particular spy/Elvis film (except for the obvious 'Wizard Of Oz' joke toward the end), which is S.O.P. for Zucker/Abrahams movies.

I agree with the Previous Comment by Willi Kampman. I thught Europa, Euopa was a Great Movie. Actually, It reminded me a lot the Novel- The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski. I think Europa, Europa is the best Movie I've seen on the Holocaust. I thought it was better than Schindler's LIst
Also the part where they showed John Connor's foster father's head cut in half by the T1000; as soon as the ominous pan to the right begins, they chop it and move to the next scene. I was so disappointed about that edit especially.
The original idea for the first Terminator was to cast Michael Biehn as the Terminator, since they were supposed to look like normal-sized, non-threatening nobodies, as infiltration units.
Some observations: Roger Ebert really couldn't pronounce "Schwarzenegger." REFLECTING SKIN is basically FRIGHT NIGHT as a period piece meets BLUE VELVET. Gene Siskel's "molested" comment in that review was a truly unfortunate choice of words. Finally, Julia Roberts *did* try to move beyond that formula with MARY REILLY in 1996. Unfortunately, almost no one went to see it.
I miss the old days of Siskel and Ebert. The way they argued with each other and shit. Terminator 2 is a lot better than the original. I got T2 as best Sci Fi film of all time. Blade Runner 2nd best. I'd put Star Wars Ep 4 and 5 at number 3 and 4. Jurassic Park at 5. Picking 6-10 are tight calls. Original Terminator is in that zone. I still haven't figured out where 2001 Space Oddessy fits in the top 10. Maybe 7th? War of the Worlds 1953 is in there for sure.
It's funny how much they disliked Blade Runner when it first came out, and even still gave it a hard time with the Director's Cut later in their re-review, although slightly more nice.
Terminator 2 is I think an interesting study in how a culture changes, how an audience’s attitude toward a celebrity can change that celebrity’s career. Of course Schwarzenegger was known before the first Terminator, but that film which pit him on the map with the general public. And what role did he play in the first film? The villain. Fast forward nearly a decade later and Schwarzenegger has become so popular and played so many heroic roles that by the time Terminator 2 was released American audiences could no longer accept him as a villain. He *had* to play the hero.
I read your response but I don't get it. He played the hero in most of his films, even pre-T2. Conan and Conan the Destroyer, Commando, Twins, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop.... If anything, playing the bad guy in T1 was a rare reprieve.

It's time again for a Naked Gun/Police Squad! viewing binge. I've missed it. In fact, I may go full ZAZ. I might even give An American Carol another try.
Everything the zuckers have ever touched has been gold except for the American carol, which was nothing more than right wing, hateful propaganda disguised as humor... it was mean, petty and just plain not funny...
They shouldn't have given away that Arnold is a good guy in the sequel. The movie carefully makes that ambiguous until the big moment when he shoots at the other terminator instead of at John.
@@j.farmer8345 It's not actually clear that the T-1000 kills the cop. You don't see what it does. The cop just grunts and falls down, no blood visible.
@@j.farmer8345 In between clearly running up to the cop and clearly taking the cop's gun, the T-1000 does something OUT OF FRAME. It's carefully blocked and storyboarded out so that you can't see exactly what the T-1000 does or, what (other than being unconscious) has happened to the cop. There's not even any sign the T-1000 is anything other than a human being like Kyle Reese was. Note the T-1000 does NOT now have the cop's face - it retains the face and body it had on arrival, so a viewer could think that it is a human who just took the cop's outfit. Later on, after the "Get down!" scene establishes who is good and who is bad, and that the T-1000 is not a human, THEN the camera explicitly, in frame, shows the T-1000 killing people - you see it impaling John's foster father, the fat guard, etc. I think there's a reason a careful director like Cameron made those choices.
IrishCarney I agree with everything you described, but I see it as more an effort to conceal the physical nature of the T-1000 rather than his antagonist status. The entire scene is much darker and more ominous than the T-800’s introduction, which ended with a semi-comic scene (e.g. sunglasses, George Thorogood on the soundtrack). Having the T-1000 confront a sympathetic character and the T-800 unsympathetic characters further gives it away. Nonetheless, I do agree that the film was edited to make the confrontation in the mall corridor a reveal movement. Earlier the T-800 spots John on his dirt bike, and the POV display says “Target acquired.” My only point is that there are plenty of cues earlier to the reveal that make it pretty unsurprising. When the T-1000 spots John at the mall, he intensely pursues him and shoves his friend out of the way. A little more obscure but one more: the T-1000 uses the police computer to find the home address and then gets a photograph of John from the adoptive parents. They reveal Arnold was already there, and he already knows what John looks like. Admittedly, you could argue that either way. Plot never really explains how the T-800 knows to go to the mall.
Yes, Stan and Dennis Muren deserve so much credit for so many of the efx........but also keep in mind my brother and I had to deal with the incredible difficulty of the transformation of the shattered T-1000 into a re-formed T-1000 again. Stan and Dennis Muren were not involved in those efx,

How you know it's a good movie: it's a violent action film with a plot revolving around a child in danger, and Gene Siskel liked it.
That's right, he was tough on movies that featured a child in danger, he thought that few situations in movies justified that.

Lethal Weapon 2 is a good sequel, too. It's better than the original, in my opinion.

Terminator 2 is a great sequel a lot fun. Naked Gun 2 half also is funny sequel. Fun summer blockbuster 1991.

Good on Gene for talking up Top Secret in the home video segment. Airplane has rightfully gone down in movie history as one of the greatest comedies of all time. It was a game changer. And yet, a case could be made that Top Secret is even better than Airplane. I'm not trying to start an argument here. I'm saying that if you haven't seen Top Secret, stop reading my comment and go watch it right now.

I'm glad to see these two finally appreciate James Cameron. Still, they're a long way from recognizing him as the greatest Hollywood action director.
Wow, Ebert was so far off on Europa Europa it's embarrassing. I totally agree with Siskel, it was about the protagonist's conflict of being himself and having to hide his identity in an environment that is so hostile towards his kind. About the unimaginable pressure. And it's about providing insights into the nazi world. Ebert talks condescendingly about the girl who wants to birth little Nazis, but at her age, she's a victim, too-a victim of propaganda and indoctrination. Of course she's an awful character, but you also have to feel bad for her because she's born into this environment.
But mainly, and I'm surprised they didn't pick up on that-in fact, Ebert even stupidly asks what the message of the movie is supposed to be-I think one main point of the film is to ridicule the Nazis and expose how phony their ideology really was. It's been years since I've watched the movie, but I remember a scene where they are in school and the teacher talks about how Germans are supposed to be genetically superior and how you could even see that. All that pseudo-science BS, and then he looks at the Jew in hiding, and he says something like: you're a perfect Arian! As a viewer you sigh in relief and chuckle in disbelief of how ridiculous all of this is. The emperor has no clothes. It was an amazing movie, and I think it was good that they cast amateur actors rather than established actors.

This is the first movie I can recall where I am a total 180 from Ebert. I was the same age as the main character, so maybe that's why it had a bigger impact. Ebert didn't catch that it's a coming of age movie with the added stakes of war and genocide, and your Jewish identity will get you killed. So maybe it's better to abandon that. He felt the most like a normal teenager when he was at Hitler youth camp and had friends. Ebert doesn't know what the point of the movie is. Wer ist mein Freund? Mein Feind? That's the point of the story. Who your friends and enemies are are more often a matter of circumstance than anything. And if that is true, then war is pointless. (For the record, sometimes the most important heroes are the ones that "just survived." Often the people who need heroes the most are the one who have been through the most heinous shit in their lives and just need to know it's possible for someone to make it.)

Sorry but I'm with Ebert on this one, the main character was unconvincing to me, they could have got a better actor.
So we’ll said. I remember seeing this on cable late at night a few years after it came out and I was mesmerized. At the time I was dating a woman whose grandparents were Holocaust survivors so it made it more personal for me.
Pity Furlong’s career tanked after American History X. The guy was a hell of an actor.

Mr. Chopsticks yeah, I thought it was a weird comparison, especially how I always thought he was supposed to be a sort of yuppie type
T2 lives on because of its special effects, but it isn't nearly as tense as the first one. The sequel ups the ante with a more unkillable machine, but here they have the help of another Terminator. The first one was an unstoppable force and nobody knew if they could kill it with 20th century technology. The villain of the first movie was Michael Meyers. The villain of the second movie was Non from Superman 2 with Cyborg of the Teen Titans to defend them.
Terminator 2 doesn't just live on because of its legendary special effects. It also lives on because of its story, characters and message. Watch the film again. Terminator 2 is a masterpiece which is superior to the original in EVERY way possible.
Naked Gun 2 and Terminator 2 in the same weekend? Man they had it good.

Didn't remember the 2. Naked Gun came out same year as the 2. Terminator.
There was a trailer made for 2 1/2 where Nielsen was dressed like Arnold saying Hasta La Vista Baby (or at least a TV spot). I remember seeing them both the same day at the theater Think I saw Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey that day too.

Gene Siskel tended to be tougher on action movies than Roger Ebert. But he also nailed Robocop, even more so than Roger who also liked it. He saw it for the absolute classic it was, few critics did. He was horribly wrong about Total Recall and Roger was right about how great a movie that was.
Major spoilers here. If you hadn't seen the movie, Arnold was not revealed as a "good Terminator" until the release of the movie.
Youre 100% right. You would think that these two "movie experts" would not spoil that but I guess not. I meaN they get to go in fresh when watching films but why not their audience? They should've been more careful.

I remember that tidbit being spoiled long before the movie released by the Theatrical trailers.
When the movie came out it was obvious that was the idea, but they had already given up the ship by all the hype and promotional material. There was even a story where Cameron was furious that the studio had went behind him and "ruined" his movie ... he got over it.
Compare to many of the modern TH-cam film critics who do bite sized reviews. Siskel & Ebert are pack so much insight into their segments that many (not all) of their digital decedents feel tongue tied in comparison.
A sequel better than the original? T2. I think T2 might be the best action movie ever made.
What the hell was Ebert expecting from the young actor in the Nazi film? if he displays his shock and horror, he immediately gives away that he is not one of them, and the audience won't buy that he can emote openly and the Nazis won't notice it.

Top Secret was a spoof on a Cornell Wilde movie called Operation Secret.
I've never seen 'Operation Secret'. Is it essentially the 'Zero Hour!' (to 'Airplane!') of 'Top Secret', if you catch my slightly convoluted drift? I'd always known it to be a parody of 50's spy films and Elvis flicks, but come to think of it, I can't recall any actual direct parodies of certain scenes from any particular spy/Elvis film (except for the obvious 'Wizard Of Oz' joke toward the end), which is S.O.P. for Zucker/Abrahams movies.

@3:17 regular tv stations edited out the sound of the guy smacking into the wall.
And some cut out the scene when he pushes the woman down.
Also the part where they showed John Connor's foster father's head cut in half by the T1000; as soon as the ominous pan to the right begins, they chop it and move to the next scene. I was so disappointed about that edit especially.
They break the plots down to their common denominations....smile

The original idea for the first Terminator was to cast Michael Biehn as the Terminator, since they were supposed to look like normal-sized, non-threatening nobodies, as infiltration units.

Roger Ebert really couldn't pronounce "Schwarzenegger."
REFLECTING SKIN is basically FRIGHT NIGHT as a period piece meets BLUE VELVET.
Gene Siskel's "molested" comment in that review was a truly unfortunate choice of words.
Finally, Julia Roberts *did* try to move beyond that formula with MARY REILLY in 1996. Unfortunately, almost no one went to see it.

I miss the old days of Siskel and Ebert. The way they argued with each other and shit. Terminator 2 is a lot better than the original. I got T2 as best Sci Fi film of all time. Blade Runner 2nd best. I'd put Star Wars Ep 4 and 5 at number 3 and 4. Jurassic Park at 5. Picking 6-10 are tight calls. Original Terminator is in that zone. I still haven't figured out where 2001 Space Oddessy fits in the top 10. Maybe 7th? War of the Worlds 1953 is in there for sure.

It's funny how much they disliked Blade Runner when it first came out, and even still gave it a hard time with the Director's Cut later in their re-review, although slightly more nice.
Terminator 2 is I think an interesting study in how a culture changes, how an audience’s attitude toward a celebrity can change that celebrity’s career. Of course Schwarzenegger was known before the first Terminator, but that film which pit him on the map with the general public. And what role did he play in the first film? The villain.
Fast forward nearly a decade later and Schwarzenegger has become so popular and played so many heroic roles that by the time Terminator 2 was released American audiences could no longer accept him as a villain. He *had* to play the hero.
I read your response but I don't get it. He played the hero in most of his films, even pre-T2. Conan and Conan the Destroyer, Commando, Twins, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop.... If anything, playing the bad guy in T1 was a rare reprieve.
I like that gene didn't care much for the first one bit kept an open mind.

They shouldn't have given away that Arnold is a good guy in the sequel. The movie carefully makes that ambiguous until the big moment when he shoots at the other terminator instead of at John.
Disagree it’s that ambiguous. In their initial encounters the T-800 hurts but doesn’t kill a biker gang, and the T-1000 kills a cop.
@@j.farmer8345 It's not actually clear that the T-1000 kills the cop. You don't see what it does. The cop just grunts and falls down, no blood visible.

@@j.farmer8345 In between clearly running up to the cop and clearly taking the cop's gun, the T-1000 does something OUT OF FRAME. It's carefully blocked and storyboarded out so that you can't see exactly what the T-1000 does or, what (other than being unconscious) has happened to the cop. There's not even any sign the T-1000 is anything other than a human being like Kyle Reese was. Note the T-1000 does NOT now have the cop's face - it retains the face and body it had on arrival, so a viewer could think that it is a human who just took the cop's outfit. Later on, after the "Get down!" scene establishes who is good and who is bad, and that the T-1000 is not a human, THEN the camera explicitly, in frame, shows the T-1000 killing people - you see it impaling John's foster father, the fat guard, etc. I think there's a reason a careful director like Cameron made those choices.
IrishCarney I agree with everything you described, but I see it as more an effort to conceal the physical nature of the T-1000 rather than his antagonist status. The entire scene is much darker and more ominous than the T-800’s introduction, which ended with a semi-comic scene (e.g. sunglasses, George Thorogood on the soundtrack). Having the T-1000 confront a sympathetic character and the T-800 unsympathetic characters further gives it away.
Nonetheless, I do agree that the film was edited to make the confrontation in the mall corridor a reveal movement. Earlier the T-800 spots John on his dirt bike, and the POV display says “Target acquired.” My only point is that there are plenty of cues earlier to the reveal that make it pretty unsurprising. When the T-1000 spots John at the mall, he intensely pursues him and shoves his friend out of the way. A little more obscure but one more: the T-1000 uses the police computer to find the home address and then gets a photograph of John from the adoptive parents. They reveal Arnold was already there, and he already knows what John looks like. Admittedly, you could argue that either way. Plot never really explains how the T-800 knows to go to the mall.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day is one of the greatest movies of all time, I don't care what anyone says!
